VegOilGuy

Vacuum casting machines are expensive. But can you make one? YES… here’s a easy, simple construction, low cost vacuum arrangement to assist with you lost wax or lost PLA casting. Many of the parts you may already have lying around and the rest are cheap as chips. Building a vacuum system has literally saved me thousands and just as importantly it’s dramatically improved the quality of my metal castings… beautiful, clear and precise details matching exactly the original wax pattern, with no pockets, no porosity and no sand. This really is a cheap and simple solution to better lost wax casting!

DIY 3D Printed Dremel CNC
Nikus

When I got my first 3D printer I was extremely happy with all the new possibilities to create things but after some time I noticed the limitations of 3D printing. Plastic is easy to melt, sometimes it's not mechanically resistant enough and most importantly sometimes doesn't look good. Don't take me wrong here, I love 3D printing and I like plastic (except plastic waste) but there are things that look, work or feel way better when made out of nonplastic material. Imagine all your furniture made out of plastic. Sometimes I prefer wood, when I need strength, metal (mostly aluminum) is a way to go. That's where CNC milling machines are used. Usually, the cost of such machine is really high, most of the hobbyist, small makers can't afford such expensive equipment. That's why the idea of building my own CNC machine sparked in my head.

How to Make a Picoballoon
Jakub_Nagy

What is a picoballoon and why would I want to build it?! I hear you ask. Let me explain. You all probably know what a HAB (High Altitude Balloon) is. It's a bunch of weird electronics stuff connected to a balloon. There are soooo many tutorials regarding HABs here on Instructables.
BUT, and that's a very big BUT what they don't tell you most times in the tutorial is the cost of the filling gas. Now, you can build a decent HAB tracker under 50€, but if it weighs 200g (which is a pretty optimistic guess with the batteries, cameras, etc.) the helium to fill the balloon can cost you 200€ or more, which is just too much for many makers like me.
So, as you can guess, picoballoons solve this problem by just not being bulky and heavy. Picoballoon is just a word for a light HAB. Light, what do I mean by light? In general, picoballoons are lighter than 20g. Now, just imagine that a processor, transmitter, a PCB, GPS, antennas, a solar panel and also a battery with a mass same as a disposable coffee cup or a spoon. Isn't that just insane?

Makerbot acelerada?

MakerBot says its new print process reduces times and costs by around 30 percent

Brian Heater
MakerBot’s MinFill arrived quietly last night as a firmware upgrade for existing customers, and the company is already calling it a “big benchmark in speed and widespread adoption of 3D printing.” Many are understandably a bit cautious around such grandiose proclamations from players in this space, particularly when it comes to something as unabashedly unsexy as infill — the support structures inside a model that keep it from collapsing.
At a bare minimum, however, the newly released MinFill setting boasts some potentially impressive numbers. The technology, designed in-house for the company’s Print software, runs an algorithm that determines the minimal amount of material required to create sufficient infill for a model, saving on material and print costs — both major sticking points in the technology’s adoption.
“You can imagine as you print a complex shape, you get a lot of interesting internal geometries that support the shape in the right places,” the company’s VP of Engineering Dave Veisz tells TechCrunch. “The net effect is that it’s going to reduce the amount of filament used and reduce the print time. So, you’re printing less to get your finished product.”
The time and cost savings varies, naturally, from project to project, owing much to different sizes and shapes of objects, but Veisz says the savings to both average out around 30 percent, effectively cutting the amount of material required to print an object by nearly one-third. Really geometrically complex objects, on the other hand, can have savings of upwards of 80 to 90 percent.

Mechanical Xylophoneneilmendoz
This Instructable will actually show you how to make a mechanical glockenspiel as the keys are metal rather than wood (xylophone is a far better word though featuring very underused letter X). This instrument was a part of The Rock Band, composed of instruments that make music with rocks by throwing them through the air, slapping them and making them vibrate. The project was created at Autodesk's awesome Pier 9 digital fabrication workshop as part of their artist in residence program.
The rock parts of this instrument are the small pebbles that are launched at the keys. However, any small hard object would probably work. The aluminium keys were fabricated using a water jet cutter. If that tool is not available to you, then wooden keys could be used instead provided that the rest of the design is updated to accommodate their design. The xylophone will be controlled by MIDI so it is possible to control it to using most common music composition software, e.g. Logic, Cubase or Ableton.

The Easiest Arduino High Altitude Balloon Data Logger

Spaceshark
High Altitude balloons are effective tools in conducting experiments and measuring data in the stratosphere. A successful launch can cost less than $200 and give insight and video of how our planet functions.
For hundreds of years, humans believed the Earth to be flat. High altitude weather balloons prove the Earth is in fact round. The idea of high altitude balloons or HABs is to mount a payload on a giant helium balloon. The balloons are then released, flying to heights of 100,000 feet. Once at these altitudes, the balloon pops and uses a parachute to float back to the ground often many miles from where it was first launched. HABs are great vehicles to get footage from the stratosphere, conduct science experiments, and collect data from high elevations.

3D Printer Buyers Guide

Alastair Jennings
Frustrated with Fused Filament Fabrication? Read our 3D printing troubleshooting guide to the most common 3D printing problems and their solutions.
It’s amazing what your 3D printer can produce. But we’ve all had those infuriating moments when, despite everything, a seemingly simple model just refuses to print successfully.
You’ve checked the model, seen countless others make it without issue, but try as you might it just won’t print. What is it that keeps going wrong?
Here at ALL3DP, we’ve had our fair share of print failures. But the upside to those failures is that we’ve become finely tuned to recognizing and solving many common 3D printing problems.

The Rabbit Mill Desktop CNC
SourceRabbit
Sourcerabbit is the brand name we created back in 2012, when Nikos decided that building someone else's dream fell short of his ambitions. Our dream is to establish a high tech CNC lab, that will manufacture awesome products. This will become a reality if we meet our goal. We would love nothing more than to be able to hire a full time Product Designer who can enrich our "Things we make can make a Life" Designs library.
Our passion for CNC machines and the need to create a fun and engaging work environment quickly united us to get to this first milestone: Indiegogo pre sales.
We both come from families who value building and restoring things, rather than buying new ones. Grandpa Siatras, a master craftsman, is the mentor of our Engineering skills, and built single handed the lab we work in.
The main reason we are here is to validate our work. We have created an affordable and easy to use machine, but only you can make it meaningful.
As we are looking to expand, ordering parts at scale will help us keep the price levels we want.
A successful campaign will give us the energy to continue our R&D, which includes the HTML5 application www.cncwebtools.com and our latest hardware blueprints.

Giant Inflatable Robot

Otherlab has been doing a lot of inflatable fabrication lately, and we thought it was about time to write an Instructable about it.  What better subject to inflatable-ize than the Instructables robot itself?  Here's the high level view of the fabrication process.

Lightweight,low-cost inflatable robotic arm

Otherlab’s “pneubotics”program has produced the world’s first inflatable, robotic arm. We’re refining fabrication techniques and design, but this prototype demonstrates the potential strength and dexterity of this low-cost, safe robotics technology.

Spot Welder from a microwave oven transformer and water tank

I have seen a few projects which use an old microwave oven transformer re-wound with a low voltage secondary to make a hobby spot welder, and I decided to have a go at making one. I ended up designing my own using copper sheet to make the secondary, following an unsatisfactory experience attempting to use wire I made from about 100 strands of stripped down CAT5 cable, which at nearly 6mm diameter wasn't thick enough and melted its insulation, causing the winding to short circuit.

Ahhhhh!

Dual Fuel Metal Melting Furnace

I got such a great response from the Easy Dual Fuel Furnace Burner that it only made sense to follow it up with the rest of the furnace.

This furnace will be able to handle melting aluminum and bronze with no trouble. In theory it should be able to melt iron too but that's probably pushing it.

I've been using my furnace for a couple years now and it has worked out quite well. My design is based on information I picked up from the backyard metalcasting forum. It's a great resource and community. There are a bunch of furnace builds there exploring a variety of ideas. I recommend checking it out. I'd also read this comprehensive guide for a general overview of metal casting and furnace design.

Um novo Material da Sculpteo:

New material on sculpteo.com : White detail resine

Sculpteo is proud to announce the immediate availability of a new material for 3D printing in high definition : white detail resine.

Creations are printed by using Objet technology. It works by jetting photopolymer materials in ultra-thin layers, layer by layer, until the model is completed. In the final stage, each photopolymer layer is immediately solidified by UV light.

The printing resolution is 28 microns. The object is rigid, opaque, with a smooth surfacing, high detailed. It’s very close to standard plastic.

Colbert in space
Now that MakerBot has a space program, homemade bots in the stratosphere can’t be so far off.
This got me thinking about credit card sized stateliness, personal GPS triangulator balloons, and the future of private space travel. If Colbert can do it, we can do it.

The folks over at Makerbot, after their recent successes with remixing heads, decided to print their very own Stephen Colbert and send him aloft on a weather balloon. The mighty patriot reached a height of over 65,000 ft before condescending to return to us mere mortals below.

Uma Estação Espacial de encher?

The key to Bigelow’s space station designs is inflatable habitats, which allow structures to be tightly packed for launching and then fill up in space. Two full-size mockups sit on the warehouse floor at the company’s Las Vegas factory. At left is the smaller Sundancer habitat, with room for three occupants. At right is the larger BA330 habitat for six people. (BA stands for Bigelow Aerospace; the 330 refers to the interior size – 330 cubic meters, or 11,700 cubic feet.)

With the world’s largest inflatable craft being launched inside the Garret Coliseum in Alabama, US, the giant blimps will take to the skies yet again. Christened as Bullet 580, the pioneering aircraft measures 235ft long, 65ft in diameter and is capable to lift 2,000lbs up to 20,000ft in the air. Developed by E-Green Technologies, the aircraft will run on algae fuel, can be remote controlled and flew with the crew as well. Lift to this £5.5million craft is provided by a system of seven bags filled with helium, while the inner hull is full of ambient air. The airship carries the payloads inside the outer envelope of the balloon which is made from a type of Kevlar and is only one sixteenth of an inch thick but 10 times stronger than steel. With its top speed at 80mph, the airship can take off and land vertically. Also, the giant blimp has a magnificent capacity to hover over an area for a week at a time – something neither airplanes nor satellites can manage. The vehicle can effectively be used for the sightseeing and reconnaissance.
