 Guide to Professional 3D Printers
There are over 100 industry-grade 3D printer models currently on the market. These printers are large, commercial 3D printing machines intended for professional use. At Sculpteo we exclusively uses professional 3D printers.
We’ve put together a guide to these industrial 3D printers based on a selection of printers from each manufacturer that best represents the range of options out there — from price to materials to build size.
We hope this guide will help you determine the best 3D printer for your business needs. And don’t forget, you don’t have to buy your own printer to have access to professional quality 3D printing. Sculpteo offers an online 3D printing service using a variety of the printers listed in this guide.
Note on pricing: Because commercial 3D printers are sold through third-party, licensed resellers, there is not a standard retail price for each printer. Prices are only available via a quote from one of these resellers. We have recorded the pricing below based either on a quote from a reseller that asked to stay anonymous or from another online source (with a link).
The guide is organized by printer technology. For details explaining each process, check out The Different Technologies Behind 3D Printing.

Space: The Final (Maker) Frontier

Andrew Back

A look at three relatively low cost routes to getting your electronics project into space.
There was a time — not that very long ago — when if you wanted to get a functional piece of electronics into space it took an obscene amount of money and a few hundred tonnes of volatile rocket fuel. Suffice to say that, unless you were part of a national space programme, a global telecoms company or an evil supervillain, you were probably out of luck.
Thanks to ever smaller and lower cost technologies, coupled with a burning desire to get in on the action and a healthy dose of inventiveness, this is all changing — and at a somewhat rapid pace. This post takes a look at just a few of the options available for getting your project into space.

Spraying natural fibers to build cotton-candy surfaces

Zoe Romano

During Fab10- Fab Festival in Barcelona I met Jin Shihui who introduced me to CandyProject, a research project exploring the process of spraying natural fiber to create a non-woven textile that can be used to produce anything from building components to ornamental artifacts.
By means of air pressure we separate the fibers from a roving allowing them to self-organize and reassemble due to the surface tension caused by a fine mist of adhesive. This creates a controlled fibrous aggregation producing an emergent morphospace encompassing the initial substructure.
The robot Jin is holding in her hands in the picture above uses air pressure to separate fibers into individual strands. While the fibers are still separated they are embedded with an adhesive spray and all parameters are controlled within the robot  with an Arduino Uno:

Uma Máquina de corte Laser CNC... Open Source!

Superb Open Source CNC Laser Cutter

The Open Source movement sets another fine example with this superb 2-axis laser cutting/engraving station.  This is version 2.0 which has a more compact size measuring 12” x 20” x 4”. The DIY laser cutter/engraver has a manual vertical axis but you can opt-in for a digitally controlled one.

CERN recreating the world's first website

David Szondy

To old fogeys like me, it seems like only yesterday that the coolest way to go online was to dial up the AP wire service bulletin board on a 300-baud modem, but it was actually two decades ago that the web as we know it burst onto our world. On Tuesday, it was 20 years ago that the World Wide Web went public, when CERN made the technology behind it available on a royalty-free basis. To mark the occasion, the organization announced that it is recreating the world's very first website for posterity.

It wasn't much to look at – just text and hyperlinks – and the subject was the World Wide Web itself, so it wasn't exactly like finding a treasure trove of LOLcats or a Kirk vs Picard flame war, but the first website did mark a significant jump forward. Flash animation, Java plugins, apps, streaming video and even images and audio were still in the future, but that first site turned the internet from the domain of computer scientists and hobbyists into the information super system that modern society now depends upon.

Hack N Mod não só nos mostra as maravilhas de hoje, como as maravilhas mais engenhosas do Passado;

Incredible Transforming Desk from the 1700′s

This incredible transforming desk literally has hidden passages inside its hidden passages.  At first glance, it looks like a beautiful, ornate piece of furniture.  But in reality, many of its shiny brass embellishments are actually buttons which open secret drawers.  Keep in mind all of this is achieved mechanically – No electronics were used.

But wait, there’s more!  The crafsmanship doesn’t stop with just one desk.  Here’s yet another piece from the same artist:

E querem fazer algo de divertido e didáctico com os fabulosos Ímanes de Neodímio?
A K & J Magnetics ensina-vos a fazerem este invulgar Motor Mendocino, que funciona a Energia Solar:

Pseudo-Levitation

In this first of a two-part series, follow along as K&J Magnetics builds a Mendocino Motor using neodymium magnets.

What is a Mendocino Motor?

The Mendocino Motor is a magnetically levitated, solar powered electric motor.  It was first made by inventor Larry Spring of Mendocino, California, for which it is named.
The motor consists of a spinning shaft that is held up by repelling magnets, stabilized by resting a point against a wall.  It is powered by solar panels mounted on the spinning shaft, which generate currents through coils of insulated wire.

What is it for?  Why build it?

First, let’s acknowledge that this motor isn’t very powerful.  It isn’t useful for getting much work done.  You’re not going to power a car with it.
It is a fun science project and a cool conversation piece.  We like it because it is a great demonstration of the principles involved in most electric motors.  If you can understand how this one works, you’re on your way to understanding all sorts of electric motors.  Mendocino motors are usually constructed from simple, easily understood, readily available materials.

Uma CANETA!

Isto é divertidíssimo, e Didáctico:

Giant Clicker Pen!

We built this enormous retractable pen as part of our Kinematics class at BYU.

The goal was to build a mechanism big enough to teach and be handled by fourth-graders.

HIGH POWER WIFI ANTENNA, Free Internet, Highly Portable, 16dB Gain, Almost a Dish!!

Uploaded by on Mar 15, 2010
This thing is the closest you can get to having a massive parabolic dish without having a massive parabolic dish.

Here is the detailed construction of a 16dB gain QUAD BIQUAD antenna. This is sort of a rare breed, something you don't see too often, but it's killer. It's a bit more difficult to make than a standard one-element biquad, but it's worth it. This thing is almost as directional as my 18" parabolic dish. Remember...the power (your signal) doubles every 3dB...this one's nearly 16dB ; )

With this I can get Linksys, Netgear, or D-link Access Points from over 2 MILES away.

ReaDIYmate: Internet-connected toys made from paper

By Simon Crisp

Remember paper? It's that thin thing you used to scribble your shopping list on before everything was stored in zeros and ones. Well, it looks like paper is making a comeback … and thanks to the rise of the Internet of Things, it's now Wi-Fi enabled. ReaDIYmate is a recent Kickstarter-funded project, which enables users to create paper-based internet companions that respond to things happening in their digital life.

Solar plane takes pioneering step of flying into the night
by Peter Capella Peter Capella – Wed Jul 7, 4:57 pm ET

PAYERNE, Switzerland (AFP) – An experimental solar-powered aircraft took the pioneering step Wednesday of flying into the night, pressing on with an historic round-the-clock flight fuelled only by the sun's energy.

"For us all, the adventure starts," said Solar Impulse chief Bertrand Piccard as the team's mission control announced at sunset that they had decided to keep pilot Andre Borschberg flying in the darkness.

Sudden, strong winds at dusk disrupted the team's planning by pushing the plane to speeds up to 140 kilometres per hour (80 mph), eating into its time in the sun, he said at Payerne airbase in western Switzerland.

But, "The rest of the parameters are good," he said. "Which means that the team mission (control) can take the decision to go through the night."

The winds sped Borschberg towards the Alps and into potential turbulence, wiping out about an hour of extra sun-bathing to charge the plane's batteries at high altitude.

A Step Closer to Perfect 3-D Data Storage
Using new classes of engineered fluorescent proteins, scientists get closer to storing data at unprecedented densities.
By Christopher Mims

In the introduction to a paper in press in the Journal of Biotechnology, Virgile Adam of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, along with a long list of collaborators from other institutions, describe the ultimate in holographic (three-dimensional) data storage: a chemically pure crystal composed solely of proteins that can be read and reversibly switched between at least two different states using nothing but light.

Embedded within the proper array of lasers (it would take at least two), such a crystal would represent something approaching the theoretical limit of data density in a storage medium: each bit would be represented by a single molecule.

With their latest work, Adam et al. take us a step closer to this dream, at least in the laboratory. Not only did they manage to encode and read data on chemically pure crystals of mutant descendants of fluorescent proteins originally derived from corals, but they also demonstrated that at least one of these proteins, known as IrisFP, actually has the ability to store data in four different states, versus the two different states (on and off) encoded by a traditional bit. In other words, this protein could store data in base 4 instead of base 2.

In order to understand what's going on here, it helps to understand the substrate on which these researchers propose to store data: in a traditional optical disc like a DVD or CD, bits are stored as microscopic, physical pits or bumps, each representing either a 0 or a 1.

Uma cabeça duma estátua gigantesca, do Faraó Amenhotep III, descoberta recentemente:

CAIRO – Archaeologists have unearthed a massive red granite head of one of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs who ruled nearly 3,400 years ago, the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities announced Sunday.

The head of Amenhotep III, which alone is about the height of a person, was dug out of the ruins of the pharaoh’s mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor.

The leader of the expedition that discovered the head described it as the best preserved sculpture of Amenhotep III’s face found to date.
