Turning Waste Heat Into Power

UA physicists have discovered a new way of harvesting waste heat and turning it into electrical power. Taking advantage of quantum effects, the technology holds great promise for making cars, power plants, factories and solar panels more efficient.

What do a car engine, a power plant, a factory and a solar panel have in common? They all generate heat – a lot of which is wasted.
University of Arizona physicists have discovered a new way of harvesting waste heat and turning it into electrical power.

Titanium foams replace injured bones

Flexible yet rigid like a human bone, and immediately capable of bearing loads: A new kind of implant, made of titanium foam, resembles the inside of a bone in terms of its structural configuration. Not only does this make it less stiff than conventional massive implants. It also promotes ingrowth into surrounding bones.
The greater one‘s responsibilities, the more a person grows. The same principle applies to the human bone: The greater the forces it bears, the thicker the tissue it develops. Those parts of the human skeleton subject to lesser strains tend to have lesser bone density. The force of stress stimulates the growth of the matrix. Medical professionals will soon be able to utilize this effect more efficiently, so that implants bond to their patients‘ bones on more sustained and stable basis.

Virgin to launch space tourism in 18 months

AFP - Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson said Monday that Virgin Galactic is on track to offer commercial space travel within 18 months, and that space hotels are next on the drawing board.
The project's SpaceshipTwo, an aircraft built by aviation engineer Burt Rutan and designed to carry paying customers into suborbital space, had its maiden flight in the California desert in March.
"We just finished building SpaceShipTwo. We are 18 months away from taking people into space," Branson told a business conference in Kuala Lumpur, adding that the fare will start at 200,000 dollars.
Virgin Galactic, which aims to become the world's first commercial company to promote space tourism, has already collected 45 million dollars in deposits from more than 330 people who have reserved seats aboard the six-person craft.

Technology
Alternative to X-Rays Makes Its First Step
By Charles Q. Choi, LiveScience Contributor

The initial object imaged through a layer of white paint (A) was a 32-pixel by 32-pixel image of a flower; the image was reconstructed with a new technique (B), matching the original by roughly 94.5 percent. Credit: Sylvain Gigan et al.

A day when doctors need only visible light instead of X-rays to view a patient's innards can now be more easily imagined, with the announcement of a way to decipher the little light that passes through opaque materials.
Normally, one cannot see through opaque barriers such as paint, skin, fabric or eggshells because any light that does manage to make it through such materials is scattered in complicated and seemingly random ways. [Infographic: How Light Works]

Invisibility Cloak Made From Silk
A material used for thousands of years could be key to creating a soft, Harry Potter-style invisibility cloak.

By Eric Bland

For thousands of years people have worn shimmering silk to stand out in a crowd. Within the next few years people could wear silk to become invisible in a a crowd.
For the first time ever, scientists have created an invisibility cloak made from silk, and coated in gold.
The new metamaterial, as invisibility cloaks and their kin are technically called, only works on relatively long terahertz waves (a region of the electromagnetic spectrum between radio and infrared light), but the Boston-area scientists who developed the technology think that silk could work as an invisibility cloak at much smaller wavelengths, even in the visible range.
The research could lead to a wide range of optically unique materials for use in biomedicine or defense.

Superconductors are more than 150 times more efficient at carrying electricity than copper wires. However, to attain the superconducting state, these materials have to be cooled below an extremely low, so-called transition temperature, at which point normal electrical resistance disappears. Developing superconductors with higher transition temperatures is one of physics' greatest quests.

New! MakerBot Cyclops 3D Scanner Kit!
Introducing The MakerBot Cyclops 3D Scanner! The MakerBot Cyclops 3D Scanner is a cheap, structured light scanner to turn real things into digital designs. It’s a 3D scanner!

Created by our summer engineer Taylor Goodman, the MakerBot Cyclops 3D Scanner builds on the 3D scanning technology created by Kyle McDonald.

It’s a cute little scanner kit with lots of depth- just assemble the laser cut parts we supply, and add your Optoma EP-PK-101 PICO Projector, your PlayStation Eye or a Microsoft LifeCam, and an iPod touch or iPhone, (or alternate VGA video source) and you’ve got a small format, low cost 3D Scanner!

The technology behind this device is known as Structured Light 3D Scanning. This kit is for 3D scanning experimenters, as you will need to be a bit savvy to get the best results. If you dont feel comfortable manipulating 3D point clouds, look through the documentation to see if this project is over your head.

200-fold boost in fuel cell efficiency advances “personalized energy systems”
Note to journalists: Please report that this research was presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society

BOSTON, Aug. 23, 2010 — The era of personalized energy systems — in which individual homes and small businesses produce their own energy for heating, cooling and powering cars — took another step toward reality today as scientists reported discovery of a powerful new catalyst that is a key element in such a system. They described the advance, which could help free homes and business from dependence on the electric company and the corner gasoline station, at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, being held here this week.
“Our goal is to make each home its own power station,” said study leader Daniel Nocera, Ph.D. “We’re working toward development of ‘personalized’ energy units that can be manufactured, distributed and installed inexpensively. There certainly are major obstacles to be overcome — existing fuel cells and solar cells must be improved, for instance. Nevertheless, one can envision villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic system.”

Zap, They're Dead! New Water Filter Electrocutes Bacteria

Analysis by David Teeghman

America has some of the cleanest drinking water on Earth, but in many developing countries, clean water is oftentimes hard to come by. Bacteria and other nasty organisms give rise to such waterborne illnesses as cholera, typhoid and hepatitis.

Many scientists are working on inexpensive and simple technologies that can clean water and make it safe to drink. Among them are Yi Cui and his colleagues at Stanford University, who have developed a new type of water filter that is 80,000 times faster than existing filters and less expensive than what's available today. It doesn't cost much because there are no moving parts and it uses very little power.

Just about everyone I know has some type of water-filtering pitcher in their refrigerator, or one hooked up directly to their faucet. While those filters physically trap most bacteria from flowing into water, this new nanofilter actually lets bacteria flow right through.

Instead, those bacteria pass through several layers of cotton, where an electrical field zaps them with 20 volts of electricity for several seconds. It's a technique that researchers have dubbed conductive "nano-coated" cotton. Twenty volts is barely enough to make a human tingle, but tests found that more than 98 percent of Escherichia coli bacteria were killed instantly.

And because the voltage is so low, it doesn't require serious electricity generation. A person could generate the power from a stationary bike or a hand-cranked device. No pumping is required either. The force of gravity is enough to allow the water and its nasties to pass through the cotton and get zapped!

In 1839, German experimenter Heinrich Wilhelm Dove discovered that illusory "beats" are perceived when pure tones of slightly different frequency are separately and simultaneously presented to each ear. Dove's insight was to realize that since there is no acoustic mixing of the tones, the perceived beats must exist solely within the auditory system, specifically that part which processes binaural (e.g., "stereo") sound.

While research in to binaural beats continued after that, the subject was viewed largely as no more than a scientific curiosity. Oster's paper was landmark not so much for its laboratory findings, but in how it tied-together the isolated islands of research since Dove in a way that gave the subject a renewed relevance to modern scientific questions.

Oster viewed binaural beats as a tool with applications for both research and medical applications. In terms of research, he felt they could be used to explore the neural pathways involved in hearing, and also to address higher-level questions such as how we locate sounds spatially in our environment, or selectively pick-out individual sounds from a jumbled noise (see "cocktail party effect"). Medically, Oster saw potential for binaural beats as a diagnostic tool, both for auditory impairments, and for a surprising range of non-auditory subjects. Of the latter, most notable was the startling finding that a diminished ability to perceive binaural beats preceded the onset of symptoms of Parkinson's disease. He also corroborated a study showing that the ability to perceive binaural beats fluctuated over hormonal cycles such as menstruation. Most important for Oster's thesis (that binaural beats involved different neural pathways than conventional hearing) was that binaural beats are perceived even when one or both frequencies are below the human hearing threshold.

Do binaural beats influence brainwave activity?

Many consider the idea of binaural beats influencing brainwave activity "controversial", but it is not, actually; only the claims of what that influence amounts to are controversial. That rhythmic stimuli can induce FFR is long studied across many species, comprising a subject known as "driving", and by no means do binaural beats have a monopoly on even auditory driving; the repetitive beating of a drum can induce FFR. But binaural beats do seem to have some advantages over many direct approaches, being arguably more efficient than most auditory means (perhaps because they use more neural circuits than conventional hearing, and a true low-frequency sinusoidal stimulus), and less invasive than some of the non-auditory approaches (like photic or electromagnetic). For example, while effective, it is well known that photic and electromagnetic stimuli can induce seizures. In my experience, binaural beats have been as harmless as anything else I listen to through headphones.

Mais uma Impressora a 3D

UP! a nova Impressora 3D.

The complete story of Whystler’s adventure with the UP! printer is below (along with more pictures). It’s well worth the read, but I’ve also chosen a few key points.
Summary:
  • It’s a real 3D printer. The company website may look a little sketchy, but the printer exists and it really works. (yay!)
  • It’s basically plug-and-play with setup taking less than an hour.
  • It prints in 0.2-0.4mm layers depending on the desired detail and speed.
  • The detail is at least as good as a well-tuned Makerbot or Reprap, but don’t expect the perfectly smooth surface of a really high-end printer.
  • Read the entire manual before setting up the printer.
  • The PP3DP is selling the UP! for $1500 for the first 100 sold, then the price goes up to $3000. Here’s a pricing guide for some DIY printers.

There is no certain bet in nuclear physics but work by Nobel laureate Carlo Rubbia at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) on the use of thorium as a cheap, clean and safe alternative to uranium in reactors may be the magic bullet we have all been hoping for, though we have barely begun to crack the potential of solar power.
Dr Rubbia says a tonne of the silvery metal – named after the Norse god of thunder, who also gave us Thor’s day or Thursday - produces as much energy as 200 tonnes of uranium, or 3,500,000 tonnes of coal. A mere fistful would light London for a week.
Thorium eats its own hazardous waste. It can even scavenge the plutonium left by uranium reactors, acting as an eco-cleaner. "It’s the Big One," said Kirk Sorensen, a former NASA rocket engineer and now chief nuclear technologist at Teledyne Brown Engineering.
