World records for QinetiQ Zephyr UAS now official
By Paul Ridden

07:20 December 29, 2010

The three world records that QinetiQ applied for after its Zephyr High-Altitude Long-Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle completed a successful 14-day flight in July 2010, have been confirmed by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. The aircraft has now officially been ratified as staying in the air longer and achieving the highest altitude of any surveillance craft in its class, and setting the absolute duration record of 14 days and 21 minutes.

The ultra-lightweight carbon-fiber aircraft trounced the duration record set by Global Hawk in 2001 by a factor of 11, and managed to rise a good 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) higher (NASA's Helios Prototype, although in a different class, did get a tad higher in 2001). QinetiQ claims that the Zephyr could also help governments, companies and universities cut costs, saying that the vehicle can be produced at "one tenth of the cost of other unmanned aerial vehicles and one hundredth of the cost of a satellite."

Uma câmara de vídeo com 1 Pixel!

Single-pixel camera captures high-quality, encryptable images
By Bridget Borgobello

17:58 December 29, 2010

In the crowded digital camera market, camera makers are continually pushing pixel counts higher and higher to attract consumers who have been led to believe that, the more pixels, the better the image. Proving that this is not necessarily the case, a team of researchers from Spain’s UJI (Universitat Jaume I) Optics Research Group (GROC) has developed a sensor of just one pixel with the ability to record high quality images.
CCDs

The CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors at the heart of today’s digital cameras record the electrical signals generated via the photoelectric effect in a large number of image points, known as pixels. This allows the light falling on a specific point on the sensor to be converted to a digital value. The CCD was invented in 1969 at AT&T Bell Labs by Willard Boyle and George E. Smith, with the two eventually recognized for their achievements by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awarded them the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2009.

E o primeiro Aparelho Quântico!

Scientists build world's first quantum machine

by Terrence Aym

Can something be in two places at once? Can something be in two separate states at once? According to Einstein and the weird Twilight Zone rules of the quantum world the answer has always been a definite maybe.

The math supported the concept and scientific study of the quanta relies upon it being true.

Now, two scientists have proved it in what's being hailed by the journal Science as the scientific breakthrough of the year. Although a laudable sentiment, that praise might just be a bit of an understatement because what physicists Andrew Cleland and John Martinis from the University of California at Santa Barbara achieved is possibly the foundation for the technological applications of quantum theory-a veritable quantum revolution.

Trangram: A fun 'internet of things' demo from Japan

By Rick Martin

09:14 December 28, 2010

Back at Tokyo Make Meeting earlier this year, there was a fun demonstration showing us what kind of things might be possible if we connected various electrical devices around the home to the Internet, using a system called Trangram. Since the event, we've spoken with Hirotaka Hatayama, who has been working on this project together with his partner, Mr. Kinukawa.

"The original idea was that we thought it would be fun to be able to arrange and mash up electric parts just like web services, such as the 'Gakken EX-System' from Gakken which is famous in Japan," he told us. "We did not know how to explain but felt that it would be very attractive."

Parabéns, Japão!

Petróleo em Portugal... Do Sol!

Breakthrough solar reactor makes fuel from sunlight
By Darren Quick
17:23 December 26, 2010

Because conventional photovoltaic panels produce electricity directly from sunlight, the energy they generate must either be used as it is produced or stored – either in batteries or by using the electricity to produce a fuel that acts as a storage medium for the energy. Now U.S. and Swiss researchers have developed a prototype device that directly converts the Sun’s rays into fuels that can be stored, allowing the energy to be used at night or transported to locations where it is needed.

A BBC report citing a paper appearing in the journal Science describes how the prototype device uses a quartz window and cavity to focus sunlight into a cylinder lined with cerium oxide. Cerium oxide, also known as ceria, is hygroscopic (meaning that it attracts and holds water molecules from the surrounding environment) and will also absorb a small amount of carbon dioxide. As the sunlight heats the ceria, it thermochemically breaks down the water and carbon dioxide pumped into the cylinder to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen that can be converted to a liquid fuel.

Education and inspiration via underwater robot
By Ben Coxworth
17:33 December 26, 2010

If you like gadgets, and you like the ocean, then you must like ROVs – it’s just that simple. For the uninitiated, ROVs (Remote Operated Vehicles) are small unmanned submarines that are used for underwater operations deemed too deep, dangerous or difficult for human divers. They’re tethered to a support ship, from which a human operator controls them in real time, watching a live video feed from an onboard camera. It’s all incredibly appealing to those of us who are fascinated by the prospect of what secrets lurk beneath the surface of the ocean... or of the local pond. A few dedicated souls go so far as to trying to create their own homebuilt ROVs, many of them turning to what has become the bible on the subject, Build Your Own Underwater Robot and other Wet Projects. Gizmag had a chance to talk to the two authors of the book, and found out what inspired them to pursue such an unlikely project.

Airships of the sea
Naval architecture: Blasting a cushion of air bubbles under a moving vessel’s hull can reduce its fuel consumption
IF YOU blow a lot of air bubbles under a ship, and keep them coming, “good things will happen”, says Steven Ceccio, an expert on bubbles at the University of Michigan’s mechanical-engineering department in Ann Arbor. When air is pumped rapidly out of small holes in a ship’s hull, the swarming bubbles will quickly join together and coat the hull with a layer of air a centimetre or two thick. This reduces drag, because air offers far less resistance than water.

A TRALHA!

Reciclar Plástico a 100%:
New technique recycles 100 percent of household plastic

By Ben Coxworth

This Christmas, chances are you’ll save the plastic film and blister packs that your presents come encased in and send it all off for recycling. According to scientists from the University of Warwick, however, only about 12 percent of plastic sent to depots actually gets recycled. Because of problems such as glued-on paper labels, or different types of plastic being combined in one product, the rest of it goes to the landfill or is burnt as fuel. Those same scientists have now devised a system that could recycle 100 percent of household plastic.

The Warwick system is based around a unit that utilizes pyrolysis within a fluidized bed reactor. Pyrolysis is the use of heat in the absence of oxygen for the decomposition of materials, while fluidized bed reactors pass a gas or liquid through solid granular material at high velocity, causing it to behave like a liquid.

Recoil Saw bounces its way through wood

By Ben Coxworth

Using a hand saw is nobody’s idea of a good time, but one inventor is trying to at least make it a little easier. John Zimmerman, a software developer by trade, has created what he calls the Recoil Saw. Essentially, it’s just a saw – various types of saws, actually – with one or more spring-loaded impact bars attached to the blade. At the end of each stroke, the spring compresses as the bar hits the material being sawed, then releases that energy back into the following return stroke. The idea is that users can pretty much just bounce their way through cutting jobs, as opposed to having to purposefully stop and start between every stroke. Zimmerman, who admits he’s probably not the most unbiased tester, said that he has found it cuts twice as fast as a regular saw.

Shorts-Wearing Japanese Sprinter-Bot Runs Like a Human on Robotic Legs

The Japanese robot, named "Athlete," does not quite have the balance of a human yet
By Clay Dillow

Japanese researcher Ryuma Niiyama’s robot is quite literally making strides in the field of robotics. His running robot, named Athlete, can only make three to five steps before falling down, but the bipedal robot’s gait is remarkably un-robotic, stemming from a musculoskeletal design that mimics human biology. With some further refinement, Niiyama may just create a robot sprinter that moves with agility and explosive speed of a human runner.

Video: Navy Railgun Sets New Record, Launching A Metal Bullet To Mach 7 Speeds
By Rebecca Boyle Posted 12.10.2010 at 4:39 pm

The Navy just broke its own record for an awesomely powerful railgun, which can hurl a projectile hundreds of miles at superfast speeds without using explosives.

Today's 33-megajoule shot — powerful enough to launch 33 Smart cars at 100 mph — means the Navy can fire projectiles at least 125 miles, keeping military personnel at a safe distance from their targets, according to the Office of Naval Research.

Rather than using an explosion to fire a bullet, the futuristic weapon uses an electromagnetic current to accelerate a projectile to March 7.5. The video pretty much says it all.

Super-Condensadores!

Technologically, the nano graphene-based, ionic liquid-enabled supercapacitor provides a specific energy density of 85.6 Wh/kg (based on the total electrode weight) at room temperature and 136 Wh/kg at 80°C, both measured at a current density of 1 A/g (corresponding to a high charge/discharge rate).

a) These are the highest energy density values ever reported for nano carbon material-based supercapaitors dominated by the electric double layer (EDL) mechanism, with minimal contribution from any redox-type pseudocapacitance mechanism.

b) These energy density values are comparable to that of the Ni metal hydride battery. This new technology provides an energy storage device that stores nearly as much energy as in a battery, but can be recharged in seconds or minutes. We believe that this is truly a breakthrough in energy technology.

The theoretical capacitance of graphene is 550 F/g (Farads per gram).
