DIY Desktop 5-axis CNC Mill

i_nerantzis

OK, you bought your router and you are happy with it. If you are an artist.

But... if you are an engineer... you probably are not so happy.

You cut some 2D stuff. Then try some 2.5D and start getting excited. And then, there comes a day when you start wondering... What if I can make something more out of my 3-axis router?

Then it comes to your mind that you can always convert one of the axis from linear to rotary! Yes this is it! You start doing it... you succeed, but deep down inside you know it.

You have to go all the way to the end and do it properly. You need to make the conversion to a full 5-axis machine to be satisfied! If you feel like it, then follow my lead...

An Unexpected Bioprinting Advantage Over COVID-19

Kerry Stevenson

Researchers have been using bioprinting technology to assist in the development of COVID-19 treatments.

According to a report in the New York Times, researchers at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine unexpectedly discovered a new approach: 3D bioprinted miniature organs. These human-like replications mimic much of the actual body functions, and thus are ideal for use in testing.

The miniature organs, which apparently include lung and colon analogs, offer a trouble-free testing platform that doesn’t risk any human or animal well-being. In addition, these miniature organs are far more closely related, biologically, than mammals that have previously been used for testing.

There’s another advantage in that these bioprinted organ analogs can be continually monitored, unlike, say the lungs inside of a test subject, which are a bit hard to access. In this way those performing tests can directly observe the effects of their prototype treatments.

First LIDAR 3D Scanning Apps Appearing

Kerry Stevenson

There’s now at least one new app that takes advantage of Apple’s new LIDAR capability.

A few months ago Apple unexpectedly announced a new iPad Pro model equipped with LIDAR. LIDAR is a range-sensing technology that is often used in high-end equipment for 3D scanning, particularly for landscapes. Seeing it appear in an affordable consumer tablet was quite a shock.

Apple’s intention was to provide additional sensor information to aid their Augmented Reality operations. In other words, when you’re pasting that virtual IKEA couch in your living room view, the couch is positioned more accurately.

However, the presence of a new 3D scanning sensor in an iPad obviously hints that someone would, sooner or later, develop a specialized 3D scanning app to make good use of it.

That now seems to have happened, with startup SiteScape now beta-testing just such an app

Toy Crossbow

NobodyNothing13

I started designing this crossbow in Tinkercad a while back, and it came out pretty well. After I finished, the design just sat untouched. Recently, I have looked back at my old design, noticing it still had many issues, like the fact that you had to use hot glue to assemble it, the striker was very short, nothing held the marble in place, it wasn't very powerful, and so on. So, I started refining this design, and fixed a lot of problems and made this crossbow easier to use, easier to assemble, more powerful and more accurate.

I made this toy crossbow to be a toy, and also part of a game. You can just launch marbles around for fun, but you can also play a game with these, with as many players as you want. In the game, you have a crossbow, some marbles, and 5 targets (I used plastic army guys). Then, you take turns shooting at your opponent's targets. You launch a marble, they launch a marble, and so on. I usually draw boundaries of how close your crossbow can get to your opponent's targets. You are eliminated if all 5 of your targets fall, and the last person who still has standing targets wins!

In the rest of this instructable, I will tell you how to print, assemble, and use this crossbow.

Boa ideia!

JRLS 1000 DIY SLS-3D-PRINTERVulcaman
In this Instructable I want to show you how to build a SLS 3D-Printer with a lot of features. I am an 18 years old guy from Germany who wants to understand how SLS-3D-Printers work in depth. I got the inspiration for this project after I saw a laser sintered object from a professionell SLS-machine. It was so detailed and so perfect. However a professionell SLS-machine is very expensive. So I designed, built and tested my own SLS-3D-Printer. It took me three month to develop the printer and I was quite surprised how well it worked. Now I will tell you some spects about the printer
http://www.instructables.com/id/JRLS-1000-DIY-SLS-3D-PRINTER/

Advanced Plasma Arc Speaker

Proto G
Yes, what you hear in that video is only coming from the scorching hot, high voltage plasma arc. It is vibrating the surrounding air similar to a regular speaker but it does so but sending electrons across the spark gap at the same frequency of the music. It's a great conversation starter to keep in your office!
Plasma speakers make amazing tweeters because they can reproduce high frequency sounds better than regular speakers due to the lack of a heavy diaphragm to move. From an audiophiles perspective, plasma tweeters are as good as it gets for high frequency sounds. For low frequency sounds, larger speakers perform much better.

DIY PVC survival compound crossbowthefrenchmaker
For this survival ready contest, I will make a compound crossbow in PVC pipe. Why a crossbow? Because when I think to survival equipment present since the beginning of the series The Walking Dead, I see the Daryl's crossbow. And I find it really cool. Silent and precise it is also a good melee weapon if necessary. To make this crossbow, I will use common materials that can be found everywhere, and does not require any electric tools, except to save time, in order to stay in the survival mind.Ready? Watch out for the walkers!Warning! This is not a toy, be careful. Never aim directly at a person or animal.Only walkers.

Boa.

TinyDice: Professional PCBs at home

Emiliano Valencia
What is the Tiny Dice?
Simply put, TinyDice is just an electronic, Arduino compatible LED die that looks quite neat.
In reality, this project was my attempt at doing things right; making an SMD circuit, a professional quality PCB, a good PCB design, and an effective code, that allows for a very energy efficient project (when not in use, the whole thing consumes less than 0.1 micro amps, yes, less than 1 ten-millionth of an amp!).
What will you learn here?
You will learn how to make high quality, SMD PCBs, from design to use, which consists in; Designing the board, transferring the design into copper clad, etching the copper clad, adding a soldermask, making a solder paste stencil, home reflow soldering, and programming a standalone board. Additionally, you will learn to use and program MSP430 value line microcontrollers from Texas instruments, these can be programmed like an Arduino, but they are very cheap and come in many shapes and sizes, an ideal tool for the average hacker to be able to use.
What will you obtain?
Appart from an incredible skill set, you will obtain a tiny gadget that displays your skills, plus it is a neat little piece of electronics to have and show around. On top of that, you will have a 6 sided die that will help you make decisions, and even win games )you could modify the code to make it be an unfair dice and use it at your favour).
This Instructable is on the Circuits contest, so if you consider it worth it, please vote for it!

How to make a Van De Graaff generator

CCX191
I've built this Van De Graaff generator for a science coursework and it works pretty well considering it being built in a rush (needa hit that deadline man). With it, I managed to achieve a 1.5cm spark, a happy physics teacher and full marks for my coursework :D.
All the parts used are easy to find in shops and really cheap. Don't be too intimidated by the looks of it, its not that hard, improvising is key.
It's my first instructables so bear with me and I welcome any suggestions and comments.
All the best!- CCX

Angle Divider for Perfect Miters No 2

Phil B
In January 2016 I did an Instructable on my copy of a Stanley No 30 Angle Divider. This is another version of the Stanley No 30 Angle Divider that looks a little more like the original from 1903. (Search your favorite browser for Stanley No 30 Angle Divider to see images of the original version with a wooden handle.)
But, the chief advantage of this Instructable is a jig for drilling the center pivot hole in the body. That jig makes dead on accuracy almost foolproof. However, this version is also more work with more steps. But, some shortcuts could be taken for those who do not have access to a welder or want to avoid the extra work.
The photo shows this version of the Angle Divider in use to set a power miter saw. The other member of the miter would be set and cut by turning the Angle Divider 180 degrees and adjusting the saw to the other half of the fence. The fence on this saw had a wavy profile. I needed to catch more of the blade because I was cutting some tall baseboard molding, so I added 3/4 inch plywood to the face of the fence. That brought the work out toward the operator and caught more blade. It also gave a flat top surface for the Angle Divider, which resulted in easier and more accurate setting of the saw

WhiteClouds Expands to Open World’s Largest 3d Printing Multi-Color Lab
Bobby Lin
The Utah-based 3d design and printing company WhiteClouds recently announced its plan to expand and build a massive 60,000 square foot facility and 14 new multi-colored 3d printers. This massive project is the result of the company’s goal to become the pioneer and leading company hubs for 3d printing.
This 3d printing multi-color lab doubles the production of the company’s 3d printing capacity, making it the world’s largest 3d printing multi-color lab.
WhiteClouds also hired COO Joey Skinner and CRO Braden Ellis to lead the company’s strategic partnership alliance to produce growth and revenues.

About US

Mylocal3DPrinting is proud to introduce itself as an organization that helps common people gain easy access to world class 3D printing and designing services at a crowdsourced price.
Our service connects individual designers and their prospective buyers with competitive 3D printing services creating a win –win situation for all. Unlike other web-based 3D printing services, we have incorporated the concept of crowdsourced designing and printing with a unique online platform that allows buyers to visualize the product throughout the design process. Our objective is to help you get the best design and price for your custom made 3D printed products by connecting you to one central market place.
Also known as additive manufacturing (AM), 3D printing refers to the creation of three dimensional objects of any shape from electronic data sources or 3D models. Objects can be created from a number of different materials including plastic, stainless steel or even precious metals. At present, 3D printing has a wide range of applications in specialized manufacturing, rapid prototyping, data visualization, and product development. Over the years, crowdsourcing has proven to be a great idea to get 3D printing projects off the ground. Crowdsourcing solicits ideas from an online community, looking for the best content, ideas, and services. This not only lowers the cost of 3D printing, but also creates an efficient platform for collaborative manufacturing.

Polycarbonate powered crossbow!

Just to show, that thing will NEVER brake! And it stores energy, as you can see, while being a lot easier to cut and machine than steel.

Faking a Color 3d Printmkoehle
This Instructable will show you how to fake the output of a color 3d printer using paper, a printer, and a laser cutter (or some similar method of cutting paper). The process is similar to others that stack slices to form a model. The difference is we will also take a slice of a 2d image (one line of pixels) and print this to the paper before cutting.
Here’s the general work flow:
Create a projection image (an image you will project onto the model)
Slice the model along the z axis at a given spacing
Slice the projection image along the z axis – this means taking one row of pixels and stretching it over the paper
Print the slice images to paper
Cut the slices on the corresponding print
Assemble the slices to form the physical model

The Rabbit Mill Desktop CNC
SourceRabbit
Sourcerabbit is the brand name we created back in 2012, when Nikos decided that building someone else's dream fell short of his ambitions. Our dream is to establish a high tech CNC lab, that will manufacture awesome products. This will become a reality if we meet our goal. We would love nothing more than to be able to hire a full time Product Designer who can enrich our "Things we make can make a Life" Designs library.
Our passion for CNC machines and the need to create a fun and engaging work environment quickly united us to get to this first milestone: Indiegogo pre sales.
We both come from families who value building and restoring things, rather than buying new ones. Grandpa Siatras, a master craftsman, is the mentor of our Engineering skills, and built single handed the lab we work in.
The main reason we are here is to validate our work. We have created an affordable and easy to use machine, but only you can make it meaningful.
As we are looking to expand, ordering parts at scale will help us keep the price levels we want.
A successful campaign will give us the energy to continue our R&D, which includes the HTML5 application www.cncwebtools.com and our latest hardware blueprints.
