Soprano Ukulele (From a Log!)

Rob Salmon

There was a glorious old apple tree in my garden. It was right in front of my kitchen window, blocking all of our light... but it would be sinful to cut down.

October 2014 - The tree was laden by a burdensome overload of apples. It was a barely noticeable, mildly windy day, and down came the tree! As, the clean up began, I cut the tree into manageable pieces. There was one piece, that for some reason I liked the look of, I kept it in my shed, and said, one day I will make something out of that.

Fast-forward to 2018. I had bought a cheap set of carving chisels, and started to look at this log, and imagine what fantastical shapes I could reveal, when I started to carve.

I had never made a musical instrument, at this point, though I have since had a number of adventures. As I threw my tape across the log, my mind began to wander. My daughters 4th Birthday was impending, and I had been considering getting her a Ukulele. A quick google to check the size of a soprano ukulele...it looked like there may be a ukulele hiding in the log.

It is almost impossible to write a "step by step" for this project, without volumes of text, as such the photos on each step do a lot of talking. Furthermore, this instructable is really about providing inspiration for others for future projects. The instructable is generally written in the first person, I have no doubt that there are better ways to do some of the steps. There may even be steps or advice that is just plain wrong! - Its really about inspiration ...and fun. For the most part (except for fretting!) this is simply good fun, with a happy biproduct of a working musical instrument!

120v Metal Foundry With Lid Switch

IJustLikeMakingThings

I have been wanting to build a metal foundry for some time but was torn between going electric or propane until I came across This Instructable that was electric but was only 120 volts. All the other builds I had seen had been 220 volt builds or used electric elements from stoves but I wanted to use120v and a heating coil. I also liked the ability to precisely control the temp because then I could also use it as a heat treater. I came across This Build which had a nice design and some great tips that I utilized in my design. I was able to use aspects of both of these designs to create my foundry.

I tried to design this to use tools that most makers should have or give you options for those with limited tools. At most, this can be made with a hacksaw, file, snips, and drill.

I wanted to include some safety measures to protect myself. I added a switch to cut the power if I lift the lid to prevent any chance of contacting the live heating coil wires. I also added a cover over the electronics, including the heating element wires. All other designs I saw had exposed wires and nothing preventing contact with the live heating coils.

Home Built 4x8ft CNC Plasma Metal Cutting System

Customfabricated

What is a CNC Plasma Cutting System? These are computer controlled machines that can cut through any electrically conductive material (steel / stainless / aluminum / copper). The machine takes a 2D computer generated sketch and translates it to a computer numerical control (CNC) system that is coupled with a Plasma Cutter. The Plasma Cutter uses an electrical arc and compressed air to cut through the conductive material.

I designed and built this system in my personal shop utilizing several off-the-shelf components along with some custom fabricated assemblies.

Check out the following steps for a detailed overview of my custom CNC Plasma build!

Plastic Brick Compressor

Rehaan33

Background

This is my IB HL Design Technology major project. It is a product that takes plastic waste and transforms it into bricks. This product was specifically designed for rural (developing areas) environments and as such, requires no electricity to operate. The production of plastic bricks in these communities can help to not only clean up their environment but also educate them on the plastic issue, provide sustainablebuildingmaterials as well as promote social entrepreneurship in these areas.

This is, unfortunately, a very specialized project as requires access to quite a few resources as you might notice when you read through this Instructable. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask them in the comments, and lastly, please vote for this instructable in the Plastics Contest if you enjoyed it!

Write in Braille With B.E.E! - DIY Braille Embosser

alatorre

Braille as a form of communication has always interested me greatly- so when I saw a contest about making Tools, I took it as an opportunity to develop an idea that I had been thinking about for the past year or so.

When researching how Braille worked and the tools that were used to generate said writing, I was surprised to see how expensive they were. It was as if there were two price ranges:

Very expensive and very precise (we are talking upwards of $2000)
Very cheap and not very precise
For Braille to be read quickly and easily, there are a series of dimensions one must follow (such as the distance between bumps, from the edge of the paper etc.). As such, I thought that a tool that would be very useful would be one that was cheap and even Open Source, whilst also capable of stimulating the interaction between the blind and those who aren't.

With that in mind, our team developed B.E.E (which stands for Braille Embossing Experience).

Our goal was to create a tool for embossing which could be made at home, would cost less than $5 to make, and could be carried inside a backpack without disrupting any usual movements.

This Instructable will detail not only the way to construct your own B.E.E unit, but also all the design process and work that it took to arrive to where to product is today.

Wooden LEGO Duck

BrittLiv

I have been obsessed with LEGO ever since I can remember. Those small plastic building blocks were definitely one of my favorite toys as a kid and I still buy LEGO sets from time to time, even though I am in my thirties now (I have also written three Instructables that have to do with LEGO so far).

As a new mother my son is definitely still too young for the small LEGO pieces, but he has a bunch of LEGO PRIMOS.

I have known for a few years that the LEGO company has also produced wooden toys and wanted to buy one. Sadly they are rare and most of the time really expensive. The wooden LEGO duck is by far my favorite toy of that line, but I was never able to buy it. So I finally decided to make my own. The bonus of making one myself is that I can give it to my son and not worry about its value.

The special thing about it is that when it moves it opens and closes its beak. I hope that you will have as much fun with it as I do.

Learn to Draw by Putting Things into Perspective
We’ve probably all heard (or even uttered) the phrase, “That really puts things into perspective.” Perspective is all about relativity; when you pull back and look at the larger picture and take a different view, maybe things aren’t so bad, or maybe there’s a solution where it seemed like there wasn’t before. Drawing with perspective will help you understand the big picture of your work and perspective drawing for beginners is much easier than you think.

How to Build a Backyard Rollercoaster (for less than $500)
NightHawkInLigh

In this video I speak with the man who literally wrote the book(s) on backyard rollercoasters: Paul Gregg.  Check out my sponsor Brilliant for a really fun way to learn!

I'm calling this a 'how to' video, but really it's deeper than that. This is a dive into what it takes to design a backyard rollercoaster. I took a lot of inspiration for the style of this video from Destin at Smarter Every Day. Let me know if you'd like to see more of this type of video on my channel!

Paul Gregg is a retired aerospace engineer who I spent the day with learning about his backyard rollercoasters. His rollercoasters are designed and tested to the same standards as airplanes, which is incredible considering the materials to build them are available at any hardware store. Paul has made backyard rollercoasters accessible to anyone with basic tools and a yard to work in.

Combined Hydraulic Vise & Screw Vise
The other Finnish guy

Hi

My name is Tuomas Soikkeli and this is my Instructable about making combined hydraulic screw vise Similar builds can be made in many ways, obviously i had to make mine using the tools that i had.
Therefore some parts are made with the "hard way" to get accurate and working result.
There is several hydraulic vise build videos on youtube.
Most of them are based to same desing origin, and therefore those all are somewhat similar.
All those has that same little problem. Usability is limited by the length of the hydraulic jack.
Maximum opening of the vise with standard sized hydraulic jack is about 150 - 170 mm ( 4-7 " )

Sometimes less.

Milk Jug Vacuum Forming - Recycled HPDE PlasticHey Jude
This Instructables shows you how to reclaim / re-use / re-cycle HDPE plastic, from waste milk jugs - and use them for Vacuum Forming. It saves using virgin plastic, (say for prototyping), is food safe, is flexible once moulded (good for concrete mini moulds), and does not give off harmful fumes upon careful heating (Easter Eggs Treasure!).
(Please consider voting in Trash to Treasure contest, if you liked it! Thanks.)
You may have access to an industrial grade Vacuum Former in your workshop or maker space, but if you are using a hobby Vac Former, like a Mayku*, you do need to avoid draughts to keep the plastic extra warm. I made a heat shroud here (LINK to Instructable) to Fix It...so do take inspiration from it if it helps with thicker HPDE containers, etc. (though at your own risk).

Welding processes handbook

Klas Weman

Mecha Source
Production of this guide to welding was prompted originally by a wish for an up-to-date reference on applications in the field. The content has been chosen so that it can be used as a textbook for European welding courses in accordance with guidelines from the European Welding Federation. Over the last few years, an equivalent Swedish guide has been used for courses on welding processes and equipment. The author hopes that this guide will serve as a useful reference book for those involved in welding. In writing the book, there has been a conscious effort to ensure that both text and illustrative material is clear, concentrating particularly on interesting and important aspects.

Snowblower Converted To Mini Tracked BulldozerFarm Show
“My 4-year-old son Matthew loves to drive it. I’m really happy with how it turned out,” says Randy Brancheau, Lachine, Mich., who converted a tracked walk-behind snowblower into a kid-size, ride-on bulldozer.
The mini tracked bulldozer is equipped with a 27-in. blade and the seat off a riding mower. It’s painted Deere green and yellow.
Brancheau built it last winter and says his son has already had a lot of fun operating it. “I hear from Matthew every day how much he likes to plow snow with it, and I made a video of him at work. He raises or lowers the blade by pulling on a lever and steers by maneuvering a pair of levers. It has 4 forward gears and one reverse. I didn’t modify the snowblower’s original friction disc drive system at all.”
Brancheau says he got the idea a long time ago but was only recently able to make it happen.

How I Made the Most Advanced Flashlight Ever

Julie

PCB design is my weak spot. I often get a simple idea and decide to realize it as complex and perfect as possible.
So I once looked an old "military" 4.5V flashlight with regular bulb that was collecting dust a. The light output from that bulb was pretty miserable and the batteries were non rechargeable, battery life was non existent. But its case was nice.
So I decided to give it a new high-tech heart.
So I asked myself: "How many functionalities do I want to build in?"
and I said: "Yes. All of them."
:)

DIY 5.1 Surround speakers - a learning opportunity!

Thomas Sanladerer

3D printing parts that are more complex than what we usually make can be daunting - especially when it also needs look good! Making my own 5.1 surround satellite speakers was a project I started over two years ago and today we're finally finishing it. There were plenty of hiccups and mistakes - I'll show you all of them so that you don't have to make them yourself!
The speakers were modeled with Onshape, unfortunately I don't have the models anymore or I'd gladly share them with you.

A Slide Rule!

CIRCULAR CD SLIDE RULE

cparedes2302
Hello Everyone!
Keeping it up with my math helping tools and after I finished my straight Cardboard Slide Rule, I decided to make another slide rule but of much easier and fast construction. I decided to go for a simple circular slide rule. Just as the previous slide rule, the intention is to have middle school students built their own and use it to get numeric ability. I know there are several apps that emulate a straight and a circular slide rule, but if you are using your phone it would be much easier to use the calculator instead of the slide rule. My dream is to have the students “thinking and reasoning” again instead of relying so strongly on technology.
The advantages of a circular slide rule is that the computing scales (C and D) of a 9.5 cm (3 3/4”) diameter tool are equivalent to a 30 cm (almost 12”) straight slide rule! So you can get a more accurate reading! The disadvantage is that as your scale is located closer to the center of the Slide Rule, the scale becomes very short and difficult to read.

PETG Print Settings – How to Find the Best Settings for PETGMiroslav Sarcevic
PETG is short for polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified. That could mean something to you if you’re into chemistry, but for the rest of us, it’s simply the most used type of plastic on the planet (in the form of PET). You can find it in plastic bottles, food containers, packaging, toys, kitchen utensils, and more common plastic products. In addition, this recyclable plastic can be injection molded, blow-molded, thermoformed, bent, cut, and in recent years, 3D printed.
We won’t go into the details of PETG chemistry in this article but will instead concentrate on 3D printing with it. Before we dive into printing tips, here are a few of the material’s characteristics:
  • Glass transition temperature:  80 °C
  • Density: 1.27 g/cm3 (which is higher than PLA and ABS)
  • Resistant against most chemicals (such as acids, alkali, and solvents)
https://all3dp.com/2/petg-print-settings-how-to-find-the-best-settings-for-petg

Achieve true 3D printing with non planar slicing

Teaching Tech
This is the most interesting thing I’ve done with my 3D printer in some time. Instead of printing in a series of 2D planes stacked up to form a 3D shape (2.5D), this non planar technique creates geometry with true 3D tool paths that can eliminate the steps often seen on shallow surfaces. Based on the amazing Masters Thesis of Daniel Ahlers and the University of Hamburg, this development can be tried yourself if you are willing to put in some time to setting it up.
In this video I’ll lead you through step by step on how to setup a virtual Linux machine on your PC, compile the custom version of Slic3r and then share with you my results. The future is bright and I thank people like Daniel Ahlers  and Moritz Walter for leading the way.

CNC Clamps 2mm (0.08 Inch) to 18mm (0.7 Inch)PatrickH101
Clamps for holding down your workpiece on a cnc router. The
clamps are designed for holding down materials with a thickness of 2mm to 18 mm.
I designed the clamp using Fusion 360.
There are 4 different sizes for the bolt that goes through, M5, M6 or 1/4 inch and for a special request M8 (The M8 version is not tested but should work though the sliding distance is a lot shorter).
Best is to use a washer on top.
The actual foot to hold your workpiece can rotate to adjust to the thickness of your material.
