our story

KinderLab Robotics emerged from a need to make widely available Marina Umaschi Bers' research on new technologies for young children at Tufts University.

Marina grew frustrated when presenting her work at conferences and always being asked: "How can I get a robotic kit?" and not having a good answer.

During a walk in Walden Pond, near Boston, her friend Mitch Rosenberg, veteran executive at several robotics start-ups, decided to join forces to fullfill an old-dream of his: improving STEM education.

Yet Another DIY Diode Laser Engraver
I always loved CNC machines! They are the future since they were first invented! I still believe that CADing and CNCing are miracles. When the first printer arrived to my home (I was about 10) I got really fascinated by the fact that I could print a paper about a hundred times by writing it just once!
Only recently I got comfortable with the parts and knowledge needed to built a CNC. I really needed a kind of plotter for my work. As you know a Commercial Laser Engraver is really pricey and a good one is simply out of reach...
To make a long story short I decided to build my own... The funny part is that when I started designing I didn't know Instructables so I reinvented the wheel in many cases...
So here we go: my Moving Gantry Arduino-Less Laser Engraver...

New materials developed that are as light as aerogel, yet 10,000 times stronger

David Szondy

Imagine materials strong enough to use in building airplanes or motor cars, yet are literally lighter than air. Soon, that may not be so hard to do because a team of researchers from MIT and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed new ultra-lightweight materials that are as light as aerogel, but 10,000 times stiffer, and may one day revolutionize aerospace and automotive designs.
Aerogels are incredibly light, so light that the record holder, aerographene, boasts a density of just 0.16 mg/cm3. Currently, aerogels are used for insulation, tennis racquets, as a means of controlling oil spills, and were used on the NASA Stardust mission to collect samples from a comet’s tail. Unfortunately, despite its seemingly ephemeral nature, its very much a solid and will shatter if pressed hard enough, so its use is limited.

Casting with molds made with paper…
krummrey

…or any other sheet material
Any cast starts with a mold. You need something to pour your material into, be it concrete, plaster, resin, wax, whatever. You can user everyday objects like bowls, packaging or make molds from existing objects.
But what if you want cast something completely different? Something you can't make casts of?
Paper to the rescue. Everyone has some lying around, has scissors and glue. And paper can take pretty much any form you want.
It does have it's limitations though. It's not waterproof and will lose it's strength when getting wet. So before you can use it as a mold, you'll have to make it waterproof. I'll just use spraypaint. Also it's strength is limited. So making huge casts doesn't work. The "Venus de Milo" is 36cm (14 inch) high - and it worked out just fine.
Paper is great to work with, it's easy to cut, fold and glue. But if you want to make more than one cast of your mold you might want to try sheets of plastic. While it is a lot harder to work with it is reusable. You can make many casts with the same mold over and over.
Here are two different routes I took

ArduinoPhone

xiaobo__

Combining Arduino and other shield modules, we make a mobile phone named Arduino Phone. Meanwhile, we printed a shell for it with the 3D printer. Although it’s not such fine as you think, even a little bit clunky, it’s still very cool. That is the point this is a cell phone made by ourselves.

While, we can’t install Arduino Phone Apps limited by Arduino. So, if you want to play Angry Birds, then you need to do some big modifications on Arduino Phone. :)

Next, I will make a detailed explanation about the steps of making an Arduino Phone, including the hardware connection and software implementation.

Hexápodes em Enxame!
Muháháháhá!
Que Engenhocas não se maravilha com isto?

Self-assembling multi-copter demonstrates networked flight control

Francis X Govers III

Researchers at ETH Zurich have demonstrated an amazing capability for small robots to self-assemble and take to the air as a multi-rotor helicopter. Maximilian Kriegleder and Raymond Oung worked with Professor Raffaello D’Andrea at his research lab to develop the small hexagonal pods that assemble into flying rafts. The true accomplishment of this research is that there is not one robot in control – each unit in itself decides what actions to take to keep the group in the air in what's known as Distributed Flight Array.

DIY high resolution 3D DLP printer (3D printer)

TristramBudel

I have to admit that I have not been active on Instructables for quite a while now, this because we (yes it is we now :D) have been busy developing a 3D printer. A 3D dlp printer to be exact, an open source high resolution 3D DLP printer to be even more exact.
We have now finished version 1.0 and now it is time to share our learnings with the rest of the world.

Why did we work on a 3D printer?
Well as you all know the world needs more 3D printers, more platforms for creation, more freedom. More possible ways to show your epic awesomeness in creation. And most of all the freedom to design and fabricate exactly what you need, when you need it without any barriers. In short 3D printers are awesome, you can never have enough 3D printers.

A nanopartícula “previne os efeitos secundários associados à quimioterapia” e, simultaneamente, “aumenta a eficácia terapêutica” do tratamento, sublinhou à agência Lusa João Nuno Moreira, investigador envolvido no projecto.

Steam Santa Flies Again!
Happy December! We all know that elves can wield amazing and fantastic magic. But what most people don't know is that the arctic elves (the "jolly-old" ones) have also harnessed the power to change the size of objects and even their own bodies. This power gave birth to the most magical elf of all - the Steam Santa. Steam Santa makes gifts for all the good girls and boys, shrinks them down to the size of a spec and carries them in a magical utility belt. He can be seen each December, zooming around the world on a wondrous steam-powered jet pack, delivering holiday joy...

Paper Iris

This is something I've been meaning to try for ages. I love the way the camera iris works, a small turn of the iris ring and the central hole expands or contacts.

Camera irises have varying numbers of vanes, the more vanes, the closer the resulting hole is to a circle. In this prototype I've used five vanes, a reasonable balance between a nicely circular hole and having loads of fiddly bits to cut out.

Next step is to make a slightly larger prototype where the hole is larger in relation to the surrounding rim. I might also try different numbers of vanes just out of interest.

Stanford researchers control light using synthetic magnetism

Brian Dodson

Left to its own ways, light will follow the same path through an optical system whether the system is being used as a camera lens or as a projector. This is called time-reversal symmetry, or reciprocity. As many new applications and methods would be enabled by access to a non-reciprocal optical system, it is unfortunate that they have been so difficult to come by. But now researchers at Stanford University have discovered how to make such non-reciprocal systems by generating an effective magnetic field for photons.
The motion of electrons through a magnetic field is the poster child for non-reciprocity. That motion produces a force acting perpendicular to the velocity of the electron, so that the electron travels in a circular path. Since the velocity has a direction, reversing the velocity of the electron reverses the direction of the force, causing the electron to follow a different path than it followed in approaching the reversal point.

The World’s First Printed Building

In a small shed on an industrial park near Pisa is a machine that can print buildings. The machine itself looks like a prototype for the automotive industry. Four columns independently support a frame with a single armature on it. Driven by CAD software installed on a dust-covered computer terminal, the armature moves just millimetres above a pile of sand, expressing a magnesium-based solution from hundreds of nozzles on its lower side. It makes four passes. The layer dries and Enrico Dini recalibrates the armature frame. The system deposits the sand and then inorganic binding ink. The exercise is repeated. The millennia-long process of laying down sedimentary rock is accelerated into a day. A building emerges. This machine could be used to construct anything. Dini wants to build a cathedral with it. Or houses on the moon.

Dragonfly: First Plasma Cutting Project Launch!

I’m happy to announce the release of our very first CNC plasma cutting project – it was this project that put the final nail in WoodMarvels.com’s coffin actually! When I saw this, it wasn’t wood nor 3D printed (for 3DMarvels.com) so it meant I’d have to build and maintain yet another e-commerce site… about a month later, CNCKing.com was build and launched!
