MakerBot says its new print process reduces times and costs by around 30 percent

MakerBot’s MinFill arrived quietly last night as a firmware upgrade for existing customers, and the company is already calling it a “big benchmark in speed and widespread adoption of 3D printing.” Many are understandably a bit cautious around such grandiose proclamations from players in this space, particularly when it comes to something as unabashedly unsexy as infill — the support structures inside a model that keep it from collapsing.
At a bare minimum, however, the newly released MinFill setting boasts some potentially impressive numbers. The technology, designed in-house for the company’s Print software, runs an algorithm that determines the minimal amount of material required to create sufficient infill for a model, saving on material and print costs — both major sticking points in the technology’s adoption.
“You can imagine as you print a complex shape, you get a lot of interesting internal geometries that support the shape in the right places,” the company’s VP of Engineering Dave Veisz tells TechCrunch. “The net effect is that it’s going to reduce the amount of filament used and reduce the print time. So, you’re printing less to get your finished product.”
The time and cost savings varies, naturally, from project to project, owing much to different sizes and shapes of objects, but Veisz says the savings to both average out around 30 percent, effectively cutting the amount of material required to print an object by nearly one-third. Really geometrically complex objects, on the other hand, can have savings of upwards of 80 to 90 percent.

Mechanical Xylophoneneilmendoz 
This Instructable will actually show you how to make a mechanical glockenspiel as the keys are metal rather than wood (xylophone is a far better word though featuring very underused letter X). This instrument was a part of The Rock Band, composed of instruments that make music with rocks by throwing them through the air, slapping them and making them vibrate. The project was created at Autodesk's awesome Pier 9 digital fabrication workshop as part of their artist in residence program.
The rock parts of this instrument are the small pebbles that are launched at the keys. However, any small hard object would probably work. The aluminium keys were fabricated using a water jet cutter. If that tool is not available to you, then wooden keys could be used instead provided that the rest of the design is updated to accommodate their design. The xylophone will be controlled by MIDI so it is possible to control it to using most common music composition software, e.g. Logic, Cubase or Ableton.

For hundreds of years, humans believed the Earth to be flat. High altitude weather balloons prove the Earth is in fact round. The idea of high altitude balloons or HABs is to mount a payload on a giant helium balloon. The balloons are then released, flying to heights of 100,000 feet. Once at these altitudes, the balloon pops and uses a parachute to float back to the ground often many miles from where it was first launched. HABs are great vehicles to get footage from the stratosphere, conduct science experiments, and collect data from high elevations.

As the still-to-be-announced date of the first commercial flight of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo approaches, more and more of the technology involved is getting nailed down. A case in point is the company's announcement that it has decided which fuel will be used in the first passenger-carrying flights of the suborbital spacecraft. The solid fuel grains that will fuel the world’s largest operational hybrid rocket will be a thermoset plastic similar to nylon.

Introducing PETBOT: A node.js Telepresence Robot

Recently we added a new member to our engineering team. This is PETBOT, aka Providence Engineering Telepresence roBOT.
It’s a telepresence robot I built for our office, consisting of an iPad mounted on a lightweight chassis powered by an RC car. To operate it, you open up a video chat session with the iPad, then control the robot from your browser using the web interface.
PETBOT can see, move, talk, and, like any startup employee, play foosball. Or at least try to.

Um Digitalizador 3D, uma Impressora/Scanner 3D, Electrólise em casa, Corian, e Cola para Acrílico

Começa-se pelo Scanner 3D da Makerbot, que vai ser posto à venda em Outubro.
Usando um sistema de rotação do Objecto, e lendo o scan duma linha em Laser, permite-vos pôr toda a espécie de objectos prontos a serem duplicados numa Impressora 3D, ou mandados para a Net:

This March, MakerBot gave us a sneak preview of its Digitizer – a 3D scanner designed to create three-dimensional design files based on scans of physical objects. At the time, it was still in prototype form, and not many details were available. Now, however, it’s a done deal, with shipping expected to begin in mid-October.

The Digitizer features a turntable-style platform, which accommodates objects measuring up to 8 x 8 inches (20.3 cm), and weighing no more than 3 kg (6.6 lb). As the object is rotated on that platform, a camera and two lasers jointly scan all of its exterior surfaces.
After a few minutes and “just two clicks,” a smooth and complete 3D design file of the object (in a format of your choice) is automatically created. This can be used with one of MakerBot’s Replicators, or on any other type of 3D printer, to produce a physical model.

AIO Robotics teases Zeus all-in-one 3D scanner and printer

A new Kickstarter project is set to launch the world's first all-in-one 3D copy machine that can scan, copy, print and even fax 3D objects. Sporting a 7-inch touchscreen and four easy to operate buttons, the Zeus is a stand alone machine that can work independent of both an internet connection and a desktop computer. So instead of running out to buy a hammer the next time you need one, you could simply scan your neighbors or have a friend fax across their hammer scan and print it out on your end.
3D printers are becoming more affordable especially with MakerBot's recent announcement about the Replicator 2 3D printer being made available through select Microsoft retail outlets in the US for a price of $2,549. However these machines only print 3D objects. The field is wide open for a machine that integrates 3D scanning, copying and faxing abilities in addition to printing and that's where AIO robotics plans to step in with Zeus.
Set to launch on September 4 at Kickstarter, the Zeus features an on-board computer and a 12-inch turntable. While there's little information available on the official site, posts made by the company on the RepRap forum, state how initial tests demonstrate the machine's ability to print at a 100 micron resolution or lower.

White Corian
The look and feel of stone in a millable sheet
Corian is a non-porous, solid surface material produced by DuPont. It is made of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate. The sheets are colored evenly throughout and have the look and feel of smooth stone.
While Corian is traditionally used as a countertop surface, its potential uses in the design world are limitless. The material can be milled as easily as most woods. It can be cut on a band saw and sanded. It can even be thermoformed when heated to 300 degrees F, meaning you can heat and bend it at interesting angles with relative ease. You can download the technical manual below for lots of additional information on how to fabricate Corian.
Because this material is manufactured with countertop use in mind, one side of the sheet and certain edges may contain writing or scratches. We can only guarantee that one side will be in pristine condition.

Acrylic Adhesive SCIGRIP Weld-On 3

Solvent cement for gluing or bonding acrylic

This is a water thin, non-flammable, very fast-setting solvent cement for gluing or bonding acrylic. It will also bond with other thermoplastics such as polystyrene, CAB (cellulose acetate butyrate), PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) and polycarbonate to themselves. It will not bond to cross linked acrylics and does not work on mirrored acrylics. The technical term to describe it would be an acrylic adhesive but commonly it might be referred to as an acrylic glue. Please note that this is the same as IPS Weld-On 3.

In this step by step tutorial I will be showing you how to make your very own Homemade Viking Catapult!
You will need 5 sticks that are are 4-6 feet long with a diameter of 1-2 inches. I am using 4 foot long sticks. The 2 shorter sticks you need will be 2-3 feet long also with a diameter of 1-2 inches. I am using 2 foot long sticks. You will need all of the items shown in the picture. You will also need something that will make a hole about 1/2 an inch wide, such as a drill.
Another thing you will need is approximately 60 inches of elastic band that has a diameter of about a half of an inch. Another thing you will need is some sort of bowl of cup to use as the holder for the item you will launch. Pictures of these items come later in this instructable.
