Introducing Maker Materials & the New Improved Elasto Plastic

The backbone of Shapeways is the 3D Printing materials we offer to our community. From the versatile Strong and Flexible Plastics, to the beautiful, hand-polished finish of Premium Silver, materials inspire everyone to create new products that no one ever dreamed of before.
Our mission at Shapeways has always been to enable anyone to make anything they want. First, we built a system to allow Makers to design and purchase models for themselves. Then we created Shapeways Shops to enable anyone to launch a business and sell their products worldwide. Now, we want to make it easier for Makers to gain access to the newest 3D printing materials on the market and test them with us. Think about it like one big, global 3D Printing R&D team.

Arduino ATtiny2313 Programming Shield
vishalapr

Today, I made a small 3x3x3 LED cube with an ATtiny2313 that I had from about 2 weeks ago. Whenever I had to reprogram the LED cube when I thought of more awesome patterns, I had to get out my breadboard and then wire up everything again referring to pin-outs of ATtiny2313 and make sure everything is connected right and then finally upload the new code.

So I went on to eBay and amazon searching for something to program these chips as I was planning on using these chips a lot in the future. After spending about an hour I just realized I was wasting my time as there was no way I was going to spend about 20-30 dollars on a simple shield.

After thinking for a bit, I decided to make a simple and easy to make, ATtiny2313 programming shield, after I made it, all I needed to do to recode any of my attinys' is to just put it in the programming shield and just in a few clicks you have your code uploaded! No need to worry if everything is wired right and make sure there are no short circuits or anything that can short out the chip and fry it or anything else of that sort.

So now in this instructable I will show you how to build one of these shields for yourself!
It costs almost nothing and takes only about 30mins or so to make it

330 volt "Shocking" Electric Deck of Cards! - (Electric Shock Kissing Prank)

The King of Random

Here's how to make a deck of cards that will pump out a shocking 330 volts of electricity.  Stuart Edge used it in his "Electric Shock Kissing Prank" to show the ladies how a man can really put the sparks in a kiss.

WARNING: This electric shocker outputs around 330 volts DC, and delivers a surprising jolt.  Be familiar with dangers associated with electric shocks, minor burns, damage to tissues, and possibility of cardiac arrest.  This project should not be attempted without adult supervision and adequate training.  Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury.  Use of this video content is at your own risk.

Linkbot modular robot platform grows with your knowledge
Paul Ridden

Though somewhat time consuming and a bit of a brain drain, robot building can also be rewarding and fun. For those just starting out, however, the prospect of simultaneously playing the roles of designer, tinkerer, programmer and troubleshooter in order to breathe life into a pile of wires, motors, plastic and metal might be just a little overwhelming. Linkbots offer a gentler learning curve with a modular platform that starts with a single working unit, and grows into more complex robots by attaching accessories and connecting other units.

Sugru wheels

andrea biffi

If you ever had dismantled an old printer you should know there is interesting material inside it... if you never did that so it's time to begin ;-)
The small plastic wheels you see in the picture come from a pair of printers. If you're luck you'll find wheels already with a good anti-slide rubber band, but in some cases they lack it. Anyway you can build easily by yourself a nice tire to make the wheels work better on your robots. To do that you'll need a small package of Sugru, this should be enough for a pair of "tires".

Hot Wheels builds longest ever toy track

Popular toy brand Mattel smashes yet another world record. Mattel's Hot Wheels created the world's longest toy track in history at the Indianapolis 500 Saturday, May 25th, to celebrate its World's Best Driver Championship event.

The racetrack is one-mile long with four lanes. Kids were invited from all over the US to race four toy-size cars around the track.

Christopher Bienusa, a 12-year-old from Alexandria, Minnesota won the race. He is coached by racing legends Mario and John Andretti.

More than 1,000 pieces of custom-made Hot Wheels track were used to build the longest track. Alexandria Industries manufactured nearly 4,700 pounds of aluminum extrusions to withstand outdoor elements such as heat and rain.

Honda begins leasing Walking Assist Exoskeleton

Mike Hanlon

Practical exoskeletons have moved considerably closer to everyday use with the news that Honda has begun leasing 100 of its Walking Assist Devices to hospitals in Japan so that it can monitor and validate their usefulness in the real world.

Circular Laser Bevels on an Epilog... A reality...

(also known as Bob) and I were yammer-jammering about the jig I built here - >  Having a "Bevel-ish" Good Time on the Laser! ...

We got to thinking, and he mentioned he had a small display turntable for showing his lathe-work.  So we decided to figure out a way to use my 45degree jig and his turntable to make bevels and chamfers around a circle with the laser!

Again, this was built at TechShop - thank goodness we have one!

simple adjustable portable spot light

 by andrea biffi

Having a powerful portable lamp is very useful in makers life. Of course there are very good solutions which you can buy for few bucks, but time ago I loved to work wood, and I've made this nice spotlight stand. You can attack it on any surface and you can adjust the spot at the direction you like

Artist transforms flat lasercut designs into 3D installations with heat forming

Ponoko project by Jenny Balisle

Bay Area artist Jenny Balisle works in three distinct mediums: painting, pen and ink, and sculptural installation made from heated acrylic sheets.
As explained in her artist statement, her body of work is “conceptually linked by dichotomous relationships — simple and complex, beautiful and grotesque, micro and macro perspectives, and natural and manmade environments.”
Her acrylic sculptures embody this concept by turning completely flat pieces of acrylic, which she lasercuts with Ponoko, into much more complex three-dimensional sculptures.
To achieve this, Jenny uses a heat forming technique. “It’s a delicate process,” she says. “I have to take great care not to crack or warp the acrylic or yellow the white surface.”

Seal system aims to keep kids from drowning

Ben Coxworth

It can’t be easy, being a lifeguard at a pool full of children. The kids that catch your attention are going to be the ones who are splashing and yelling, whereas the ones that you really need to look for could be silently slipping below the surface, where they won’t be seen or heard. North Carolina-based emergency physician Graham Snyder decided that those potential drowning victims needed more attention drawn to their predicament, so he created the Seal system.

E as Patentes vão cobrir Brinquedos, e Aerocarros!!!

Together at last – an RC car and a quadcopter

Ben Coxworth
Quadcopters are becoming more and more popular with radio-controlled model enthusiasts, but sometimes ... sometimes you still just want to remotely-control a car. If that’s the case with you, then UK-based product designer Witold Mielniczek has got you covered. His prototype vehicle, known simply as B, functions as both a quadcopter and an off-road racer.

Get a free model from Forme It, the new online repository for high quality file.

The number of online repositories for 3D files is exploding on the web. Especially when it comes to 3D printing, there has been a huge interest on building viable databases to directly print an object. While lots of marketplaces are based on crowdsourced content, Forme It, a new online repository, chose to build its service on high quality files only and is therefore producing its own content through high quality scans.

John Barlow, director of Forme It, sees his service as a way for designers to cut off time consuming tasks. By using 3D files from Forme It, designers can either directly apply a variety of textures to their design or they can re-work scanned forms without having to generate it entirely. On this particular issue, John Barlow, stated:
“By  helping  streamline the time spent modelling – while enhancing, not compromising, the level of detail – I believe Forme It will be a key part of the new and exciting 3D printing ecosystem that is expanding every day.”
The Forme It team also launched a Youtube Chanel. Its purpose is to host tutorials, where profesional modellers explain how to edit scanned models.

3D Print a Vector File using Tinkercad

audreyobscura
My pal Diego and I wanted to make something cool for our artist collective called "OUR HOUSE". He came up with this super sweet logo for our project, and I wanted to 3D print it as an ornament. I think it could be made in to jewelry too, and I hope to make a mold from this model. (Next Instructable!)

He sent me his Adobe Illustrator logo file, so I started hacking away at it to create some models that we could print :D

Snapple, Steel and Green Fire: Bride of Spirit Lantern
The Green Gentleman
My previous green fire instructable, The Spirit Lantern (Green Fire 2.0), was entertaining and educational to make, but it raised a couple of concerns:

1) A methanol flame is hot (from 500˚ C up to ~1900˚ C under some conditions according to online sources - I've been able to bend borosilicate tubing over a methanol flame, so think 820˚ C/1500˚ F), and an open flame is a fire hazard

2) One of the combustion products, diboron trioxide, is a white powder that settles all over everything, and makes a mess

Although this instructable doesn't entirely solve these problems, it mitigates them somewhat, and (in my opinion) results in an end product that's both more versatile and more aesthetically pleasing.  That said, this is not something you want to leave unattended (in most of it's incarnations - caveat: see "safe mode" below), and there is still some diboro trioxide that escapes the lamp, so it still might be best described as "outdoors fun."  I present it to the discerning ladies and gentlemen of the Instructables community however, as an entertaining part of any soiree where children are well-behaved and supervised, or (better still) in bed, and the only thing imbibing alcohol is the lamp itself.  In other words, use discretion.

Arduino Cellular Shield Tutorial
randofo

The Arduino Cellular Shield allows you to make cellular telephone calls, and send text messages. The brains of this shield is the SM5100B which is a robust cellular module capable of performing many of the tasks of most standard cell phones. This shield requires use of a SIM card to connect to a cellular network. The tutorial that follows is a bare bones tutorial for initializing the shield, and both sending and receiving text messages, and telephone calls. To learn more about the module's functionality, be sure to check out the datasheets on Sparkfun's product page.

A friend of mine lives across the street from a wine distributor, and recently found a heap of wooden wine-boxes on the sidewalk. Knowing that his clever DIY friends would probably want them, he dragged them in to his garage, then called his friends.

I grabbed as many as I could, and dragged them to my shop.

I made this Instructable from my phone with the Instructables App - a great tool for writing and documenting your projects! Check it out for iOS and Android!

F-35B makes first vertical takeoff

David Szondy

Lockheed Martin has revealed that an F-35B fighter jet made its first vertical takeoff on May 10 at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. This follows on the heels of its first vertical night landing on April 2 at the same location. The vertical takeoff capability is designed for moving the strike fighter over short distances in an emergency when a runway isn't available, but it is not seen as a combat feature due to its heavy use of fuel.
The F-35B Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing (STOVL) Lightning II is a multi-role strike fighter and the part of the most expensive weapons system purchase in United States history. It’s one of three F-35 variants built around a common airframe and is designed to use its lift fan and variable geometry engine to fly from aircraft carriers equipped with ski jumps, assault carriers, and small or damaged air fields.

Novidades a cores, Maker Faire, Visão Nocturna, Desktop Gremlins... Etc!

INKODYE
Designed for use on fabrics and can be applied simply by using a paint brush – as well as techniques such as screen printing.
Once the Inkodye has dried, it is exposed to natural light or UV through any type of mask. This might be anything from a simple silhouette (e.g., found object such as leaf) to a true photographic negative. In all cases, the results are guaranteed to be stunning and rapid - depending on the brightness of the light.
During exposure, the Inkodye changes from clear to one of three colours - depending on choice.

A flexible self-adhesive plastic film that glows brightly in the dark after being subjected to sunlight or UV from another source.

Can easily be cut by hand and stuck to a wide range of materials.

Sheet sizes available:
• 500 x 350mm
• 250 x 350mm.

Shown here with the UV Energizer Pen, available separately.

These pigments normally have a pale, off-white appearance but in sunlight or UV light they instantly change to a bright, vivid colour.
The pigments revert to their pale colour when away from sunlight or UV light.
The active photochromic dye is contained in micron-size microcapsules dispersed in water to make up the pigment, which has the consistency of thick cream.
If the pigment is mixed with a binder such as our acrylic base, it can be permanently applied to almost any surface.

LOL

Not getting the sunshine you were hoping for?
Cheat with the Portable UV energiser pen.

The pen has an anodised aluminium body. It is battery powered and is operated with a toggle switch.
Great for UV investigations and experimentation. See Glow in the Dark Film above for sample use.

Requires 1 x 9V PP3 battery.

Vão lá ver!

DIY Infrared Night Vision Device
eyebot117

I've been involved with airsoft for about two years being affiliated with a large local group of people in our community who meet regularly and have scheduled games, ops, and events. Airsoft is a great sport and hobby that encourages teamwork, honor, respect, communication, and discipline (as well as how to wisely make purchases). I recently played a game at night and realized how cool it would be if I could utilize some form of night vision. The more I researched it, the more I wanted to see in the dark somehow.

Unfortunately, true night vision in even the lowest quality can cost hundreds of dollars just for the optic alone, excluding hardware necessary to mount the optic to a helmet or airsoft rifle. It's expensive technology. However, there are alternative methods for seeing in the dark. There are several versions of educational night vision viewers and toy spy binoculars available on the market for kids and...um...well, geeks like me. They utilize low-lux cameras, infrared illumination, and a display for a more affordable $50-$80 system that can still see in the dark. This is the system I chose to utilize.
