EASY build Vacuum Casting machine system for Lost Wax / PLA Casting - DIY chamber & Pump : lwc #6
VegOilGuy

Vacuum casting machines are expensive. But can you make one? YES… here’s a easy, simple construction, low cost vacuum arrangement to assist with you lost wax or lost PLA casting. Many of the parts you may already have lying around and the rest are cheap as chips. Building a vacuum system has literally saved me thousands and just as importantly it’s dramatically improved the quality of my metal castings… beautiful, clear and precise details matching exactly the original wax pattern, with no pockets, no porosity and no sand. This really is a cheap and simple solution to better lost wax casting!

DIY 3D Printed Dremel CNC
Nikus

When I got my first 3D printer I was extremely happy with all the new possibilities to create things but after some time I noticed the limitations of 3D printing. Plastic is easy to melt, sometimes it's not mechanically resistant enough and most importantly sometimes doesn't look good. Don't take me wrong here, I love 3D printing and I like plastic (except plastic waste) but there are things that look, work or feel way better when made out of nonplastic material. Imagine all your furniture made out of plastic. Sometimes I prefer wood, when I need strength, metal (mostly aluminum) is a way to go. That's where CNC milling machines are used. Usually, the cost of such machine is really high, most of the hobbyist, small makers can't afford such expensive equipment. That's why the idea of building my own CNC machine sparked in my head.

How to Make a Picoballoon
Jakub_Nagy

What is a picoballoon and why would I want to build it?! I hear you ask. Let me explain. You all probably know what a HAB (High Altitude Balloon) is. It's a bunch of weird electronics stuff connected to a balloon. There are soooo many tutorials regarding HABs here on Instructables.
BUT, and that's a very big BUT what they don't tell you most times in the tutorial is the cost of the filling gas. Now, you can build a decent HAB tracker under 50€, but if it weighs 200g (which is a pretty optimistic guess with the batteries, cameras, etc.) the helium to fill the balloon can cost you 200€ or more, which is just too much for many makers like me.
So, as you can guess, picoballoons solve this problem by just not being bulky and heavy. Picoballoon is just a word for a light HAB. Light, what do I mean by light? In general, picoballoons are lighter than 20g. Now, just imagine that a processor, transmitter, a PCB, GPS, antennas, a solar panel and also a battery with a mass same as a disposable coffee cup or a spoon. Isn't that just insane?

DIY Nintendo!

Nintendo Labo Lets You Build DIY Cardboard Creations
Anatol Locker

Nintendo has always been good for surprises. Today, they are presenting “Nintendo Labo”, a gaming system that combines the fun of making things with playing video games.
”Nintendo Labo” will be a series of DIY kits you made mostly from cardboard. In the box, you’ll find preconfigured cardboard sheets, strings, rubber bands, stickers and a digital assembly guide. Your goal is to piece together the creations first and then bring them to life via the Nintendo Joy-cons.
They are crucial to Nintendo Labo: The interplay between the toys and the game console can only be done due to the Joy-Cons. The controllers are mounted to the cardboard projects; they pick up movement by their sensors and send the data to the console.

Flip-Top CNC Table
JON-A-TRON

Space is expensive, space saving is not. With this table in my garage, I have a 30 square foot work table and on the under side, a 33" X 33" Shapoko XXL CNC machine when I need it.
The CNC machine is screwed to the underside of the table top, which is attached to two side shelves with shafts and bearings. Four set screws keep the table rigid when it's in either position.

Laminated 3D Printer (from Laser Cut Parts Only)
Core3D

When I wanted to build my own first printer, I of course went with the Prusa I3 design. I joined a Makerspace so I could print the components to make it.
Turns out, Makerspace 3D printers are fickle and down an awful lot. So instead of printing a 3D printer I decided to Laser cut my first printer. In effect I’m using the laminate printer method to create an FDM printer.
The embedded video will give you an impression of what components are made up of.
You can download the entire model at: https://grabcad.com/library/laminated-prusa-i3-printer-1
All components can be laser cut using 12x28 inch Acrylic sheet (3mm thick).
In this instructable I will not go into the wiring of the Ramp 1.4 setup but instead focus on Printer frame and mechanics.

Tube Bender
lecgo

I would have liked it to make a new seat for my recumbent bicycle and for it was necessary some aluminium tubes and to bend those on proper shape. In our town I have not found a place to bend some tubes and I have decided to make my own tube bender for this work.

Tin Can Hole Saw
ShakeTheFuture

I needed a large hole saw for one of my projects. I already had a smaller hole saw, therefore I did not want to buy another one....?
You see, a hole saw is not something I use very often. Last time I bought a hole saw for around 10 - 15 USD only to used it once or twice.
I did not want to spend another 15 USD for a tool that will not be used.
In this Instructable, I demonstrate a way to make a hole saw out of a tin can.
It can cut plastic, acrylic and drywall.

Researchers Make Robots Out of Paper
A team of researchers from the University of Illinois Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering has made a pair of crawling robots, Peri and Poly, out of little more than a sheet of paper, a few 3D printed parts, and a handful of screws.
The researchers used origami paper folding to create cheap robots that move like earthworms.
Poly is 51 mm wide and uses a pair of origami towers that expand and contract when twisted to make the worm robot crawl forward. The robot has directional feet made of hard plastic and rubber. The 3D-printed toes allow the robot to slide forward while the rubber heal stops it from backsliding. This particular example of bio-mimicry was inspired by the setae on earthworms.
Peri is more than twice the size, and fully mobile. Peri is 106 mm wide and runs on batteries unlike the Poly, which is tethered to the power source. Peri also uses on-board controllers to navigate.

The Problem

Over 1.2 billion people globally have no access to electricity and millions more have an unreliable supply. Instead they use dangerous, polluting and expensive kerosene lamps for light.
A typical kerosene lamp is made by taking an empty bottle or tin can, putting a wick in the middle, filling it with fuel and lighting. Using kerosene for lighting is extremely inefficient, dangerous and expensive, and it has extensive health and environmental drawbacks.

How It Works
Combining kinetic and potential energy, GravityLight works by connecting an elevated weight — filled with rocks or sand — to a pulley system that slowly powers a generator as the weight falls to the ground.

Electromagnetic Fidget Spinner Accelerator
tanner_tech
Fidget Spinners are little plastic toys with a bearing in the center. They are fun for a little bit, but get boring after a while due to their slow spinning speeds. There are ways to make them spin faster, but these methods involve using a bulky air compressor or an expensive can of compressed air. Luckily, I have found a cheap way to accelerate these fidget spinners to extremely high speeds with the power of electromagnetism. You can even hold the spinner in your hand while you accelerate it! I have clocked a spinner that is spinning with this accelerator at speeds up to 1440 RPM, that is fast. You can build this accelerator too, it is really cheap and really simple to build.

If you think knitting and crocheting are only for grandmas or that macramé and woven wall hangings were just a fad in the 1970s, think again. Thanks in part to festival fashion, yarn arts are alive and well…and growing.
In fact, 38 million people knit or crochet according to the Craft Yarn Council—including celebs such as Cameron Diaz, Daryl Hannah, Julianna Margulies, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, Hilary Swank and Vanna White. And the Association For Creative Industries says that the U.S. creative products industries are valued at $43 billion.
There are more craft-related blogs, websites and tutorials than ever before. YouTube has 12,000 woven hall hanging videos, 400,000 macrame how-tos, 2.6 million knitting tutorials and 3.6 million crochet trainings. You could spend days on Instagram getting inspired by #bohemianstyle, #yarnlove and #makersgonnamake. Pinterest is filled with DIY yarn craft ideas. Craftsy offers lessons in 18 types of creative arts.
While these kinds of artistic expression provide a creative outlet, reduce stress, improve mood and build confidence, many makers are finding there is a business opportunity as well. On Etsy, there are 13,000 listings for woven wall hangings, 228,000+ macramé items, nearly 700,000 knitted products and 1.18 million crocheted designs.
That’s a lot of yarn.

(AUTHORS NOTE, July 9, 2017)
Hi Everyone, there' been a lot of views on this project lately! Thanks for coming by to read through it! Much has changed since I originally built this car, including the fact that there are a LOT of great commercially built electric cars available for sale, including used at good prices. When I built this car, pretty much the only electric car available was the $100,000 Tesla Roadster. Now, I'm driving a used Mitsubishi iMiEV electric car and power it with my Solar Garage! Please take a look at my other Instructables and at 300MPG.org for the latest on my clean transportation adventures!)

And The 5 Reasons Are …
Creating materials that are Ponoko Originals has been super-duper exciting. Of course we love them, or else we wouldn’t offer them to you! But here are five reasons why you should love the new baroque printed MDF sheets:
  1.     Your products will stand out with these one-of-a-kind materials that bring full-color art printed to both sides of the material sheet. Your friends, family and customers will love it!
  2.     You can make products look amazing without heaps of laborious finishing because the pattern is all done for you in the digital print.
  3.     With a consistent 3mm thickness, this printed MDF is ideal for designing 3D products.

SUREFLY! OOOOHHH, YEAH!

Geneva Wheels À La Carte, to Sgv
Edgar

What Gizmo maker won't, some day, need a Mechanism that will transform a continuous rotation into a move-pause-move one?
That's the Geneva Wheel!

And the question is, where do you get a Vector Drawing of the parts, so you can Laser cut/3D print/machine from a template/whatever?
I've managed to make these parts in sgv format, from an Online Geneva Drive Generator, great program, highly configurable...

But I've not got an Svg directly! No such luck...
I've managed it by snapshotting that page, and then using both Gimp and Inkscape, to make Vector drawings of those parts.
And that's why I've made this Instructable.

J. E. Johnson

Wow, took me long enough to post this. The last day of DEEP camp on June 28 and I learned so much from my students that I’ve been completely absorbed in revising the clock design that I haven’t taken time to post the photos of my student’s truly excellent work. Can’t wait for next year.
The video below shows six cardboard clocks running (mostly) all at once. What a lovely sound.

Gizmo Makers will all eventually get to need to measure Magnetic Fields, of their static and electro-mangetic Magnets, so learn how to do that accurately:

Measuring Magnets
We like to use this blog to answer common magnetic questions in a bit more detail.  Here we can provide a fuller explanation than might be possible in an email or brief conversation.  It’s also nice to share this kind of stuff online so people can find it for themselves while searching!
In this installment, we’re going to focus on questions about measuring the field strength of a magnet.  Perhaps the most common question is:
I’m measuring the Surface Field of a specific magnet with magnetometer, and I’m measuring less than the specified Surface Field.  Why are my readings low?  Is something wrong with the magnet?
Let's dig down into the details and see how these measurements can be useful.  We'll also learn about what their limitations and pitfalls might be.
