The hypocycloid mechanism is used to make a compact, simple gear box that reduces rotational speed. In the case of this animation the reduction is 7:1. Follow one of the lobes of the six pointed rotor with your eye and see how it advances one notch anticlockwise for each rotation of the blue rotor. By adding two similar mechanisms back to back it is possible to multiply up the the gear reduction ratio

Graphene aerogel takes world’s lightest material crown

Darren Quick

Not even a year after it claimed the title of the world’s lightest material, aerographite has been knocked off its crown by a new aerogel made from graphene. Created by a research team from China’s Zhejiang University in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering lab headed by Professor Gao Chao, the ultra-light aerogel has a density lower than that of helium and just twice that of hydrogen.
Although first created in 1931 by American scientist and chemical engineer, Samuel Stephens Kistler, aerogels have recently become a hotly contested area of scientific research. A “multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNT) aerogel” dubbed “frozen smoke” with a density of 4 mg/cm3 lost its world’s lightest material title in 2011 to a micro-lattice material with a density of 0.9 mg/cm3. Less than a year later, aerographite claimed the crown with its density of 0.18 mg/cm3.

Codeable Objects

Codeable Objects is a library for Processing that enables novice coders, designers and artists to rapidly design, customize and construct artifacts using geometric computation and digital fabrication. The programming methods provided by the library allow the user to program a variety of structures and designs with simple code and geometry. When the user compiles their code, the software outputs tool paths based on their specifications, which can be used in conjunction with digital fabrication tools to build their object.
The first case study for the Codeable Objects library was conducted with a set of methods that facilitated the creation of a laser cut lamp. To test the library, I held a workshop at the MIT Media Lab. Over the course of a day, participants used the library to design, and construct lamps of their own.  All of the lamps displayed in the images were created by people in the workshop.

Ever wonder of copypaste method, usable in real life, not only in virtual reality? Me too. It is  21th century, and those are nearer than most of all can imagine! This is possible thank to 3d scanners and printers. So let's try to scan something!

E numa Figurina absolutamente... Re-vigorante!

3D Printing Reinvigorating Wood Sculpture

We get to see a lot of amazing uses for 3D printing here at Shapeways, but this technique is new to me! Ben Godi from Italian company 3D Wood shares a really interesting technique that combines 3D printing and traditional wood turning.

In his words...

Hi I'm Ben and I would like to share a production process I have developed this year, together with a local wood carving company 3D Wood. We already use this production pipeline daily now, because it has so many advantages and Shapeways plays a major role! (how could it be otherwise!) I'm going to explain the steps with the help of two models that are for sale on my website.

Mini CNC case study
Albanetc

This is what I made tonight. This is just a wheel. I wanted to test how it would come out before cutting the inertial damper wheels for steppers. It took about 10 minutes to cut, using tungsten carbide bit, speed setting 2, pass depth of 0.02" and feedrate of 12 IPM. I got these parameters from earlier mini router experiments/tests.

Installing snowblower on Kubota BX tractor
nlinventor

Fist snow of the year  this morning and more is forecast for tomorrow so I got the snowblower on just in time. This rear mounted Kubota snowblower does a good job clearing snow but getting it installed is always a bit of a challenge, especially as it's something done just once a year so you don't get much opportunity to develop smooth installation techniques.

I stored the snowblower and 3-point hitch parts under a tarp all summer, but even with that, a lot of oil and grease evaporated and some rust set in.  I live in a damp climate so that doesn't help any.

The photo above shows the snowblower fully installed, adjusted and lubricated.

Sliding Dog Gate Protects Door from Scratches
KentM

Anyone with a dog knows that if you let them out to do their business you better be waiting by the door when they want to come back in. If you're not, it's a sure bet that they will be scratching at the door trying to get your attention and, the bigger the dog, the greater the damage. This instructable is a classic example of my "closing the barn door after the horse got out" but, hopefully, it will save your door before it meets the same fate as mine.

INSTRUCTIONS TO LEARN HOW TO USE A LATHE

The lathe is a machine tool used principally for shaping pieces of metal (and sometimes wood or other materials) by causing the workpiece to be held and rotated by the lathe while a tool bit is advanced into the work causing the cutting action. The basic lathe that was designed to cut cylindrical metal stock has been developed further to produce screw threads, tapered work, drilled holes, knurled surfaces, and crankshafts. Modern lathes offer a variety of rotating speeds and a means to manually and automatically move the cutting tool into the workpiece. Machinists and maintenance shop personnel must be thoroughly familiar with the lathe and its operations to accomplish the repair and fabrication of needed parts.

Little Wire: the compact USB multi-tool

A look at a simple yet highly versatile multi-purpose USB tool, and an insight into the experience of creating an open source hardware project.
The Little Wire hardware comprises of only a handful of components, but don't let that fool you as it can be put to many different uses including USB GPIO, ADC and SPI/I2C/UART interface.
In the great open source tradition Little Wire builds upon the work of others, and in particular the USBtiny software implementation of low-speed USB for Atmel ATtiny microcontrollers, Limor Fried's USBtinyISP hardware, and a V-USB ATtiny in-system programmer.
Little Wire is an open source hardware design and the schematic, bill of materials and PCB layout are hosted at SolderPad, with open source software provided at GitHub.
It would be easy enough to construct Little Wire using perfboard, you could make your own PCB from the supplied layout and Seeedstudio also provide complete kits.

Natural cancer drug available from soaking soybeans
By Brian Dodson
A group of plant scientists at the University of Missouri have discovered a new, inexpensive approach to extracting an powerful anticancer chemical from soybeans. The incidence of a number of common cancers (breast, colorectal, prostate, bladder, lymphoma, and oral cancers) is lower in Japan by a factor of two to ten times than in North America or Western Europe (GLOBOCAN 2008). The medical profession is edging toward a conclusion that a significant portion of the reduction in alimentary system cancers and breast cancer is associated with the importance of the humble soybean to Japanese diets. Researchers have considered the medical benefits of the soybean for centuries. However, the modern level of interest began with the identification of the Bowman-Birk Protease Inhibitor (BBI) in 1963.

3-D Printing Hits Rock-Bottom Prices With Homemade Ceramics Mix

ScienceDaily (Mar. 31, 2009) — This story is, literally, stone age meets digital age: University of Washington researchers are combining the ancient art of ceramics and the new technology of 3-D printing. Along the way, they are making 3-D printing dramatically cheaper.
About five years ago, Mark Ganter, a UW mechanical engineering professor and longtime practitioner of 3-D printing, became frustrated with the high cost of commercial materials and began experimenting with his own formulas. He and his students gradually developed a home-brew approach, replacing a proprietary mix with artists' ceramic powder blended with sugar and maltodextrin, a nutritional supplement. The results are printed in a recent issue of Ceramics Monthly. Co-authors are Duane Storti, UW associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Ben Utela, a former UW doctoral student.
"Normally these supplies cost $30 to $50 a pound. Our materials cost less than a dollar a pound," said Ganter. He said he wants to distribute the free recipes in order to democratize 3-D printing and expand the range of printable objects.

Spot Welder from a microwave oven transformer and water tank

I have seen a few projects which use an old microwave oven transformer re-wound with a low voltage secondary to make a hobby spot welder, and I decided to have a go at making one. I ended up designing my own using copper sheet to make the secondary, following an unsatisfactory experience attempting to use wire I made from about 100 strands of stripped down CAT5 cable, which at nearly 6mm diameter wasn't thick enough and melted its insulation, causing the winding to short circuit.

Ahhhhh!

Dual Fuel Metal Melting Furnace

I got such a great response from the Easy Dual Fuel Furnace Burner that it only made sense to follow it up with the rest of the furnace.

This furnace will be able to handle melting aluminum and bronze with no trouble. In theory it should be able to melt iron too but that's probably pushing it.

I've been using my furnace for a couple years now and it has worked out quite well. My design is based on information I picked up from the backyard metalcasting forum. It's a great resource and community. There are a bunch of furnace builds there exploring a variety of ideas. I recommend checking it out. I'd also read this comprehensive guide for a general overview of metal casting and furnace design.

Um novo Material da Sculpteo:

New material on sculpteo.com : White detail resine

Sculpteo is proud to announce the immediate availability of a new material for 3D printing in high definition : white detail resine.

Creations are printed by using Objet technology. It works by jetting photopolymer materials in ultra-thin layers, layer by layer, until the model is completed. In the final stage, each photopolymer layer is immediately solidified by UV light.

The printing resolution is 28 microns. The object is rigid, opaque, with a smooth surfacing, high detailed. It’s very close to standard plastic.

FollowSpots
augmentedhopscotch
balloons

É possível desenvolver outras interacções semelhantes, por exemplo:
  • Ao apontar os objectos uns para os outros, os objectos reagem com som, luzes, etc.;
  • Ao alterar a sua posição no espaço, o objecto reage com som, luzes, etc.;
  • Ao alterar a sua posição no espaço, o objecto faz com que o espaço reaja com projecções de vídeo, som, luzes, etc.;
  • Electrónica;
  • Computação Física;
  • Instalações Interactivas;
  • Robótica;
  • Visão por Computador;

Aeromodelling – 3D Printed Plane Dashboard Replica
Posted on 2011/09/02 by sculpteo
User “Tortilla”, from Dijon Flying Club, modeled this Robin DR400 dashboard ready to be 3D Printed. “The Robin DR400 is a wooden sport monoplane, conceived by Pierre Robin and Jean Délémontez. The Robin DR400 first flew in 1972 and was still in production in 2008. It has a tricycle undercarriage, and can carry four people. The DR400 aircraft have the ‘cranked wing’ configuration, in which the dihedral angle of the outer wing is much greater than the inboard, a configuration which they share with Jodel aircraft. This model is considered easy to fly by many and quiet during flight due to its wooden frame” (Wikipedia)

Miniature oxygen generator implants to boost effectiveness of cancer treatments

By Darren Quick

Some cancers, such as pancreatic and cervical cancers, are notoriously hypoxic, which means they contain low oxygen levels. Because radiation therapy needs oxygen to be effective, hypoxic areas of a tumor can be difficult to kill. To combat this, researchers at Purdue University have developed and tested a miniature electronic device that is designed to be implanted into solid tumors to generate oxygen and boost the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Once implanted into a tumor, the new "implantable micro oxygen generator" uses ultrasonic signals to generate a small voltage to separate oxygen and hydrogen from water in a chemical process called water electrolysis. The devides are just under one centimeter (0.39-in) long and are inserted into tumors with a hypodermic biopsy needle.

Video: Minesweeping Tank-Bot Shreds Land Mines, Rolling Through Explosions With Ease
Digger D-3 laughs in the face of unexploded ordnance
By Rebecca Boyle
Technology is helping de-miners find unexploded land mines in new and cool ways, like the metal detectors augmented with smartphones we learned about this spring. And now, there are mine-chomping tank robots that eat mines for breakfast.

The Digger D-3 is the latest creation of Digger DTR, a Swiss non-governmental organization dedicated to designing mine-clearing devices. It has a spinning tiller of death called a flail, made of tungsten hammers that pound 10 inches into the ground. It also has a rolling tiller that can clear vegetation. The remote-controlled tank was brought to light by IEEE Spectrum’s robotics blog.

The D-3 is fully armored to withstand land mines and ordnance up to 81mm in diameter, Digger says. It has a four-cylinder, 4.5 L John Deere diesel engine, which can crank out 173 hp at 2400 RPM. The remote-controlled robot is as adept at clearing shrubbery as it is at chomping mines, so it’s ideal for minefields with dense vegetation or in mountainous areas, Digger says.

The video below shows its predecessor, the D-2, surviving mine explosions in Sudan. The new model is designed to be easily repaired and modified, enabling it to be used in remote locations with limited resources and plenty of land mines.

Scientists Discover Two Never-Before-Seen Kinds of Water Waves
By Clay Dillow

Of all the things in the physical world we think we know a lot about, water is definitely among them. Nonetheless, by precisely shaking a shallow container of water, researchers have now observed two new types of waves that have never been observed before in water--and one that has never been observed in any other media either.

To conjure the waves, the researchers used what is known as a Hele-Shaw cell mounted on a small shake table. A Hele-Shaw cells is a container consisting of two parallel transparent plates separated by a small gap, much like an ant farm (see images above and .gifs below). In this case, the gap between them was 1.5 millimeters, or less than 6 hundredths of an inch.

The Best Measurement Yet of Earth's Radioactivity Shows Half the Earth's Heat Comes from Nuclear Decay
By Clay Dillow
Scientists measuring the subatomic particles flowing from Earth’s interior have taken the most precise measurement ever gathered of the home planet’s radioactivity. It turns out nearly half of the Earth’s total heat output comes form decaying radioactive elements like thorium and uranium in the Earth’s crust. But that’s an answer that begets more questions.

Previously, there were varying theories on just how much of the Earth’s heat came from radioactive decay, with many--accurately, it would seem--placing that value at about half of the roughly 40 terawatts of heat produced by the Earth. That heat drives convection currents in the outer core and give us our magnetic field, among other natural processes (tectonics come to mind).

ShopMarvels.com: Industry Knowledge and Networking Directory

Friday, June 3rd, 2011
Networking is the most critical part of business as, like a tree, each new branch leads to new opportunities for growth and success. This is one reason why I decided to build ShopMarvels.com as I have active discussions with shops, designers and manufacturers on a weekly basis.
Many shop owners want to network with retail shops to cut and distribute laser cut, 3d printed and/or cnc manufactured items for extra income. Many small retailers are looking to expand their product range with unique products. Manufacturers want to actively promote their products to the shop owners and the networking potentials keep growing.
Who started ShopMarvels.com?
Jon Cantin, entrepreneur, designer, 3D enthusiast, published author and all around hard working guy! He wanted a resource for his customers across various sites including WoodMarvels.com and 3DMarvels.com to come to one place to share their knowledge with others. The more we share, the more we grow!
