How-To: Make Your Own AerogelSean Michael Ragan
The folks at Aerogel.org are serious about it: The “Make” section of their exhaustive “open source aerogel” site will teach you how to make high-quality monolithic aerogel the way the pros do it, from building your our own supercritical drying apparatus (“manuclave” is their neologism), to mixing up the wet ingredients, to actually performing the supercritical drying operation. It still won’t be easy or cheap, but all the information you need is right there, well organized and clearly explained.

CNC Router Rotary Axis
mkmra2
My router was a 3-axis machine. Adding a 4th rotary axis allows considerably more flexibility as the part to be machined can be rotated to expose different faces for cutting. I'd previously done some 4-axis router work at Stamps School of Art & Design - here's that post. I really wanted to add this capability to my router.
After exploring a few options - most of which were very expensive - I chose to go with an inexpensive kit from China. It was only $358 including shipping. I'd have to figure out how to get it hooked in to the electronics then build my own mount.

[Project] 7-axis Hand-Cranked Radial Engine ModelMika Yeap

Hand-cranked and fully functional, this is a model of a seven-cylinder radial engine by plusalphaDesigns. It’s a “reciprocating type internal combustion engine configuration in which the cylinders ‘radiate’ outward from a central crankcase like the spokes of a wheel,” according to Wikipedia.
It’s a relatively painless model to assemble and print, requiring just a handful of plastic parts – you don’t even need any fasteners. So let’s jump right in!

Low Cost Bioprinter
mechbioprinter

The goal of this project is to develop a low-cost bioprinter to make bioprinting more accessible to research institutions. Currently, low-end bioprinters cost approximately $10,000 while high-end bioprinters cost approximately $170,000. In contrast, our printer can be built for approximately $375.

Convert a 3D PRINTER to LASER ENGRAVER | Under 40$Jakes

- To start this project we are gonna need a laser that is strong enough to burn into most of the household materials. I found that 500 mw laser is just right for this project due to its low price and capability of engraving in almost every material with exception of metals and glass.
-I bought my laser on Aliexpress for a small price. Here is the link: https://goo.gl/obFmFD
-With laser you will also get a laser driver circuit and a safety glasses which are necessarry when operating with lasers.

Build Your Own 3d Printer Filament Factory (Filament Extruder)ianmcmill

UPDATE: Now with wiring diagram !
Long read:
3D printers are cool and they finally start to drop in price. Kickstarter campaigns like the one from QB-UP or M3D are popping up and they are finally "affordable". And with affordable I mean affordable like 200 $ and not "affordable" like 2.199$ affordable. However, once you are a proud owner of a 3D printer you will soon realize that your wallet is far from being let alone. No ! You need plastic filament of course to print those super awesome coat hooks and wheel chocks. Since the price for these filaments tend to top the actual material costs, printing before mentioned life savers is kind of expensive and could become a problem to the development of the ever growing 3D printer community
BUT FEAR NO MORE !! Some clever gents came along - Hugh Lyman with his Lyman Extruder may be mentioned here or the guys over at Filastruder.com - and saved the day ! YAY. And there was much rejoicing ! They have built plastic extruders everyone can build or buy at a decent price. However if you are a fellow Instructable.com user the first thing that should come to your mind is "I can build this by myself...and cheaper...". Building at lower costs is the nature of DIY after all.

Building the cheapest possible Prusa i3 MK2
Tom

What is the cheapest possible, real 3D printer you can buy without making one compromise after the other? That’s the question we’re asking by building a Prusa i3 MK2-style 3D printer that comes with most of the important features of the original one from Josef Prusa and requires a bit more work for sourcing and building the machine, but most importantly, we’re going to build it only with the most affordable set of parts.
This page will serve as a hub for part lists and build guides as the project moves along! All build videos and the accompanying project videos have been organized into a neat playlist!

Recreating an Antique Divers Helmet From Foam
LostWax

I love the ocean. I can sit on the beach all day just watching the waves do their wavey thing. Sadly, I happen to live in the middle of the Canadian prairies. No ocean to watch here. But there's always the world of make-believe, and what better way to get in the ocean vibe than with an amazing deep sea diver costume. I created this costume pattern to try and recreate the feel of the classic "Mark V" dive helmet which has become an iconic image of divers and the sea. It was used by the U.S. Navy from 1916 until 1984! Let's make one of our own.

Cardboard Bender
nml235l

A tool is something that makes life easier and more convenient. I have got a rather huge mass of cardboard (a cause of a new furnishings :-)) and appropriate number of ideas to make something with it (Bag for Containers). One problem is bend operations. Cardboard plates have a multiply layer (as usual) so I get clumsy splits during bending. To prevent such behavior I decided to flatten cardboard according the bend line. At this moment we get situation for a ... NEW TOOL. How to make flattening along the path? Certainly, using a one of the ancient inventions – the Wheel. We need only move the wheel (roller) along the path on cardboard surface with giving insignificant pressure. This principle we use in home preservation to connect bank and cover (or let's remember about the roller-machine for road construction). Concept of a tool is very simple: roller (wheel) and handle – nothing more.

Arduino Forklift
Leon van den Beukel

This is a video about making a remote controlled forklift car. I've used Fusion 360 to design and create the 3D printed parts and CNC machining templates. If you don't have a CNC machine you can also use a jigsaw to cut out the wooden parts. I've provided the cutting templates, sources and 3D printing STL files on my GitHub page:

RF Signal Generator
Milen

The RF signal generator is a must to have tool when playing with radio receivers. It is used to tune a resonant circuits and adjust the gain of different RF stages. Very useful feature of the RF Signal generator is its modulation capability. If it can modulate the frequency amplitude or frequency makes it non replaceable tool for RF design works.
Some time ago I have designed an AM modulator, which could be used for such purposes. It works fine in some cases, but it has the disadvantage to be not able to work as standalone device. It requires additionally power supply module and two signal generators - for the RF carrier frequency and for the modulating signal. This makes it inconvenient to work with it outside the house. I decided to create an RF signal generator working as fully functional stand alone device. Instead to base the architecture on the modern DDS chip, I decided to use the analog approach. As a basis I have chose an existing RF signal generator published here. Similar design is described also here. The credits for this design go to their authors. I repeated mainly the first design adding additional digital frequency counter instead the not very precisely radial scale analog calibration.

Will This New Technology Make 3D Printers 25 Times Faster?

Matt Stultz

The technologies that we often talk about for 3D printing (FDM, SLA, SLS), have been around for a while and it’s rare that we see ground breaking processes that really shake things up. This week, a new company in the market Carbon 3D, has released a new process they refer to as Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP), that may be a game changer.

3d print the Titanfall Atlas Mech action figure on your own
In the past whatever we common people need from toys, accessories to engineering parts, we were running to the local stores if else we will buy through online ever since 3d printing got familiar things have changed and made even a common man with knowledge of 3d modeling or even without design knowledge they can print anything they want. In recent months we have seen many designers brought their designing to the real object through 3d printing.
Daniel Lilygreen from wales who is a designer has extensive knowledge in 3d modeling decided to 3d print the game character of the Atlas mech character from Titanfall game. Lilyfield want everyone to print his model in whatever size they need to print this Atlas. He printed this action figure which is 18 inches tall, with detailed exposure of the model.

Pilot Uses Boeing 737 To Build Flight Simulator In His Own Garage
Lara Lopes
You may remember the 747 that was converted into a hostel in Stockholm. Well now one guy has found a more personal use for an old plane. James Price, an american pilot and air traffic controller, decided to take home flight simulators to a new level and spent years transforming the nose section of a retired Boeing 737 into a perfect flight simulator in his own garage. The simulator consists of a fully functional cockpit and state of the art simulation software.

Micro Engines and Tools Made From Scratch
Nick Normal

Primarily working with miniatures, but also exploring solar, steam, and thermoelectricity, I stumbled upon the YouTube channel of Greek maker JohnnyQ90 and felt compelled to share his projects with you.
His engine projects are fascinating for their diminutive size while mostly functioning as desired. His channel description says everything is “made from scratch”…”and a lot of patience!” No doubt. Some of his engines aren’t much bigger than a large coin:

Taiwanese engineer working on the world's biggest CMYKW 3D printer

Alec

Anyone who's ever bought or built a 3D FDM printer, will know that there are currently dozens of models on the market. But despite all the available options you have to consider – complicated or user-friendly, heated or regular printbed, SD-card or Wi-Fi and so on – most of them are fundamentally about heated filament, a single extruder and a limited print size. Various options and printers can result in higher-quality results, in shorter print times or in more convenience, but the fundamentals are largely similar.
And while that might be just fine for most of us, there are always some people looking for a bit more. People like the mechanical engineer James Chang, from Taiwan. Chang had an itch that regular 3D printers couldn't scratch, so he's been working a truly unique and inspiring project for the past few months: the Super 3D Printer.

Sugru wheels

andrea biffi

If you ever had dismantled an old printer you should know there is interesting material inside it... if you never did that so it's time to begin ;-)
The small plastic wheels you see in the picture come from a pair of printers. If you're luck you'll find wheels already with a good anti-slide rubber band, but in some cases they lack it. Anyway you can build easily by yourself a nice tire to make the wheels work better on your robots. To do that you'll need a small package of Sugru, this should be enough for a pair of "tires".

Hot Wheels builds longest ever toy track

Popular toy brand Mattel smashes yet another world record. Mattel's Hot Wheels created the world's longest toy track in history at the Indianapolis 500 Saturday, May 25th, to celebrate its World's Best Driver Championship event.

The racetrack is one-mile long with four lanes. Kids were invited from all over the US to race four toy-size cars around the track.

Christopher Bienusa, a 12-year-old from Alexandria, Minnesota won the race. He is coached by racing legends Mario and John Andretti.

More than 1,000 pieces of custom-made Hot Wheels track were used to build the longest track. Alexandria Industries manufactured nearly 4,700 pounds of aluminum extrusions to withstand outdoor elements such as heat and rain.

Honda begins leasing Walking Assist Exoskeleton

Mike Hanlon

Practical exoskeletons have moved considerably closer to everyday use with the news that Honda has begun leasing 100 of its Walking Assist Devices to hospitals in Japan so that it can monitor and validate their usefulness in the real world.

Circular Laser Bevels on an Epilog... A reality...

togo1919

bgerens
(also known as Bob) and I were yammer-jammering about the jig I built here - >  Having a "Bevel-ish" Good Time on the Laser! ...

We got to thinking, and he mentioned he had a small display turntable for showing his lathe-work.  So we decided to figure out a way to use my 45degree jig and his turntable to make bevels and chamfers around a circle with the laser!

Again, this was built at TechShop - thank goodness we have one!

simple adjustable portable spot light

 by andrea biffi

Having a powerful portable lamp is very useful in makers life. Of course there are very good solutions which you can buy for few bucks, but time ago I loved to work wood, and I've made this nice spotlight stand. You can attack it on any surface and you can adjust the spot at the direction you like

Interview with Michael Joyce – Founder of B9Creator
Jon Cantin

I recently got into contact with Michael Joyce, the founder and designer of B9Creator to learn more about his views about the 3D printing industry and the challenges of developing your own 3D printer. His creation has enjoyed tremendous success using Kickstarter to fund the production of his machine – back in June 0f 2012 he got more than 10x the backing he was looking for and this year, he’s about to do it again but hurry – you only have until April 9th!

Walking Table
boston09

I've seen a video of a table that can walk, I really wanted one but I couldn't find one for sale, so I thought "Hey, I'm an engineering student, I'll make one!" But when i started out the search for the plans to the walking table I quickly realized that there were absolutely zero plans. So I had no choice but to make one myself starting from scratch. With some reverse-engineering, engineering, imagination, and basic shop skills it can be done with a bunch of time it can be done. Plus you're going to have pretty a kick ass table.

TUTORIAL: How To Install Design Spark On A Mac Using Crossover
JT177
Hello there fellow mac users! i managed to get the legendary Design Spark PCB running on a mac so i thought i would tell u guys how to do this to!
First you gotta download crossover and the latest Design Spark PCB installer for windows
What is crossover i hear you say? well, crossover is a program on the mac that lets you install windows programs on a mac by making them think they are running on a windows machine, its a very clever application however it is not free, it costs £38 (with a years worth of support for it) or £25 (with a months worth of support) last i checked (i used the trial to install mine) but in my opinion for an application like design spark pcb and the ability to install most windows applications, its worth it!

Sheeesh!

Bow - The Bike Wheel Bow
darrenhall

Could not find one of these anywhere - put it into Google but no joy - - guess I better make one myself.

Rigid frame.
Good power output.
No knock required on arrows.
Longer draw than a standard bow.
Accurate.
So very! light.
Simple to build.
Cheap - cost £2.50 for proper catapult rubber preferred by the Chinese apparently (big following of catapults).
Pimp this up and she would be awesome - I kinda like her dirty and visceral though.
Easily shoot 20 meters.
Would work well for short range hunting of small game or fish.
Ammo carried on the frame.
