Ìndia vai a Marte!

India starts countdown for Mars mission

David Szondy

India has started the clock on its most ambitious space project to date. On Sunday at 6:08 IST, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) began the countdown for its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). If all goes to schedule, the unmanned probe will lift off on Tuesday from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR), on the island of Sriharikota at 2:38 pm IST atop a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C25), marking the point where India hopes to launch itself into the space-faring big leagues.

All About Magnetization Direction

What do we mean by a magnet’s Magnetization Direction?  Why do we care about this?  Can a magnet’s magnetization direction be changed?  What’s the difference between axially and diametrically magnetized magnets?  How can I tell them apart?  Why can’t I get a block magnet magnetized along the length or width?  What magnetization direction should be used with directional sensors?

What do we mean by a magnet’s Magnetization Direction?  Is it important?

The strong magnets found at K&J Magnetics are called sintered neodymium magnets,.  They are the most powerful type of permanent magnet available.  Sintered means the metal is pressed together at high temperatures in a very specific way to make a strong magnet.  You can learn a bit more about this process in How Neodymium Magnets are Made.

Batatas!!!

Discovery shines a light on potential cure for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Darren Quick

It is generally believed that aggregations of proteins are responsible for brain disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. However, the difficulty has been in detecting the aggregates responsible and removing them from the brain. Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and Polish Wroclaw University of Technology have found a potential solution using lasers.
Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are thought to be caused by aggregates of amyloid beta protein that start to inhibit proper cellular processes in the brain. Although it is technically possible to cure the diseases by detecting and removing the amyloid protein aggregates using chemicals, these chemicals are highly toxic and harmful to the patient.

The Buccaneer® - The 3D Printer that Everyone can use!

To bring 3D printing technology into everyone's home by building a quality and affordable 3D printer that everyone can enjoy!

Inside The Buccaneer

Hi everyone! We have had many requests to see the internals of our 3D printer while it is printing. We ripped out the mechanics from our final casing and placed them into our prototype casing (which is transparent) for all of you to see! You may notice the internals are slightly different from our main video and the reason for this is the progress we have made from the time we applied for Kickstarter until the day it is launched. What you will see in this vid is exactly what we have today.
It's a bit messy because our prototype box doesn't have the compartments for proper storage but it looks great either way. Enjoy the vid!
The item printed is the Cute Octopus from Makerbot, Created by Jason Bakutis and is a creative common.

Review: Heli-Max 1SQ V-Cam quadcopter

Jonathan Fincher

As the largest distributor of radio-controlled models in the US, Hobbico has produced its fair share of innovative, small-sized vehicles over the past few decades. So when we learned the company recently released a new quadcopter that features a self-stabilization system and on-board camera, we were only too happy to take it for a spin. After spending some time with the Heli-Max 1SQ V-Cam quadcopter, we've gained both a new-found respect for aerial photographers, as well as a new toy that's eaten up hours of free time.

Robot astronaut Kirobo headed for ISS in August

David Szondy

In what may not be the most historic event in space exploration, but may be the cutest, Toyota has announced that the Kibo Robot Project’s “robot astronaut” Kirobo will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) on August 4. Unlike its human counterparts, the 13.4-in (34 cm) tall humanoid robot will travel aboard an unmanned Kounotori 4 cargo spacecraft launched from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Tanegashima Space Center atop a H-IIB rocket. Once at the ISS, Kirobo is scheduled to conduct the first-ever robot-human conversation experiments in December.

Open Design 3D Printed Headphones

Teague Labs have created these fully functioning headphones, named simply 13:30 after the time it takes to print them (13 hours and 30 minutes).
From the Teague Labs website:
With 3D printers becoming more accessible we decided to have a think around the concept “life in beta” as a future scenario. What if printed prototypes could become actual products? Meaning, once off the print bed an object could be assembled without any tools and be made functional by readily attainable components. I decided to stress test the premise with the challenge of making electronically simple yet functionally complex headphones.

Dragon achieves first commercial docking with ISS

David Szondy

Spacex’s unmanned Dragon spacecraft successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) at 9:03 AM EDT (1303 GMT) today. Marking the beginning of a new era of commercial space travel, the privately owned and operated cargo vehicle was captured at 6:56 AM EDT (1056 GMT) by one of the station’s robotic arms operated by Expedition 33 crew member Akihiko Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Expedition 33 Commander Sunita Williams of NASA. It was then guided to a docking port where it will remain attached for the next three weeks.

New 3M projector streams Roku content

Dave LeClair

The world seems to be moving away from projectors. Almost all of the tech-savvy consumer's content is downloaded digitally and streamed to TVs, tablets and smartphones. The projector is kind of lost in the shuffle of all of this. Enter 3M's Streaming Projector, which merges the massive display sizes that only a projector can produce, with the streaming content for which Roku is known.
This projector is tiny, which is in keeping with the trend in personal electronics today. It is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and weighs in at about a pound. It is capable of projecting an image of up to 120 inches, and it can place these images just about anywhere. The 3M Streaming Projector has a resolution of 800 x 480, which will not blow away the hardcore HD junkies, but it is quite impressive when you consider the size of the device.

MilliMount smartphone mount prototyped with Ponoko, launches Kickstarter campaign

MilliMount, an expandable smartphone mount that recently launched on Kickstarter, was prototyped early on using Ponoko’s 3D printing service.
If funding is successful, the combination phone stand/tripod mount/windshield mount will be manufactured through traditional means. But during development, Spatial Studios used one of the great strengths of 3D printing: iteration. That enabled creator Randy Ganacias to make changes over and over until the design was declared finished.

E Portugal ganha acesso a Tecnologia Espacial, muito bom!

Warp Drive, Tesla, e Papercraft

Warp Drive!

Warp drive looks more promising than ever in recent NASA studies

Brian Dodson

"Interstellar travel may still be in its infancy, but adulthood is fast approaching, and our descendants will someday see childhood's end." The Starflight Handbook

The first steps towards interstellar travel have been taken, but the stars are very far away. Voyager 1 is about 17 light-hours distant from Earth and is traveling with a velocity of 0.006 percent of light speed, meaning it will take about 17,000 years to travel one light-year. Fortunately, the elusive "warp drive" now appears to be evolving past difficulties with new theoretical advances and a NASA test rig under development to measure artificially generated warping of space-time.
The warp drive broke away from being a wholly fictional concept in 1994, when physicist Miguel Alcubierre suggested that faster-than-light (FTL) travel was possible if you remained still on a flat piece of spacetime inside a warp bubble that was made to move at superluminal velocity. Rather like a magic carpet. The main idea here is that, although no material objects can travel faster than light, there is no known upper speed to the ability of spacetime itself to expand and contract. The only real hint we have is that the minimum velocity of spacetime expansion during the period of cosmological inflation was about 30 million billion times the speed of light.

Diamond Window Cube (Modular Origami)

sherrycayheyhey

Follow these steps to make your very own Diamond Window Cube.

I'm not sure about the origin of these types of cubes (please share if you do) or their real name. I've seen many variations of this but they all involve really weird folding to show the white side of the paper. I figured out how to do what I assume is the classic version of these and they turned out really cute.

I've included pictures of each step for folding the model and also numbered them according to the text I wrote so it should be clear how to make some of these for yourself. I've also labeled the pieces for the assembly step and hopefully that helps too. Happy folding!

Earthquake-resistant bed can withstand 65 tons of falling debris

By Bridget Borgobello

Following the lead of the Earthquake-proof school desk, Wood Luck is an earthquake resistant bed that can withstand up to 65 short tons (59 metric tonnes) of falling debris. Designed by Shinko Industries, the bed has been built to give users some “good luck” protection during an earthquake. And with the ability to withstand 65 tons of tumbling detritus, it may just become a lifesaving piece of furniture during an emergency situation.

Make this Electrostatic Motor From Scrap

brazilero2008

Intro
Here is an electrostatic motor that' s easily built for a science project. The rotor was constructed by laminating a strip of aluminum foil between layers of plastic packaging tape and rolling it into a tube. The tube was mounted on an axle using cardboard end caps w/flat washers at the centers as bearings. Stationary electrodes or stators were made from a ring of nails suspended co-axially w/respect to the rotor and energized w/negative, high voltage DC. A framework made from drinking straws, tape and plastic covers of tin cans maintained the stators in proper alignment around the rotor.

Mind-reading exoskeleton could help rehabilitate stroke victims

A collaboration between Rice University, the University of Houston and TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital has led to MAHI-EXO II, a sophisticated exoskeleton that could help stroke victims regain movement in the arms by reading the patients' intended actions and nudging them along when needed. The robot wraps the arm from the fingertips to the elbow and uses a non-invasive EEG interface to anticipate gestures and help patients build up strength and accuracy over time.
When the subject thinks about performing an action, an electrode-studded cap reads the electrical impulses from the motor cortex of the brain and then outputs them to the artificial limb, initiating motion with a simple thought.

Smartphone app determines location, speed and direction of distant objects
By Darren Quick

Researchers at the University of Missouri have developed a prototype app that combines a smartphone’s GPS, compass and imaging capabilities to calculate the exact location of distant objects and track their speed and direction. The researchers say the PositionIt app could allow a single off-the-shelf device to replace various pieces of equipment carried by soldiers on the battlefield, or be used closer to home to judge the distance to the green when playing golf.

Build a Halbach Array

And a one-sided refrigerator Magnet!

The late Klaus Halbach of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories discovered an interesting permanent magnet configuration that concentrates magnetic flux on one side of the array and cancels it on the other. He originally designed it for focusing the beams of particle accelerators. LLNL scientists Post and Ryutov developed the idea into a model Maglev train, the only one so far that uses permanent magnets--it floats over a series of short-circuited coils at only 5 mph or so (the 'Inductrack' system). Maglev trains, motors and generators using circular Halbach arrays have already been patented--the advantages include minimized drag from eddy current effects (drag decreases as speed increases), reduced power consumption (no giant electromagnets needed), reduced exposure of train passengers to high magnetic fields, and other things that we haven't even begin to explore yet.
Our only result from experimentation so far has been a one-sided refrigerator magnet. Though it seems trivial at first, this magnet array seems frighteningly close to a magnetic monopole...it was enough to freak out the entire Wondermagnet.com staff!

MAKE A SPRING-ACTION MORTAR WITH ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT (using a plastic beer jar and discarded stuff)

M.C. Langer

A few months ago, I had to help a cousin of mine with a college homework about the physics of parabolic trajectory. He's really good at math, but very bad at crafting. It was my turn to save the day!! I had only one night to build a machine capable of launching an anti-stress ball, with adjustable height. So, I combined a plastic beer jar (marketing stuff from a colombian beer named "Costeña"), a toilet tree for the elevation and other stuff for the frame. It works with two spings, like some type of slingshot. You charge the mortar, lock the trigger, push the trigger and it launch the ball.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: By building this Spring-Action Mortar, students will be able to build a educational project reusing stuff and analize the physics of launching a projectile with parabolic trajectory.

How to get a great 3D print from Instructables!

You may have noticed here at Instructables we have been giving away a lot of 3D prints. It has been a lot of fun processing everyone's models through our printers, but it has become clear that we educate the community on how they can get the best print possible. The following steps will outline the criterion for getting the models of your dreams from Instructables.com's fleet of Objet Connex 500 printers.

Masten Space Systems takes their Xaero suborbital rocket out for a spin
By Brian Dodson
In celebration of the two hundred and thirty sixth anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence from British rule, Masten Space Systems has performed a record-setting flight of their vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) Xaero suborbital rocket at the Mohave Air and Space Port. Unlike the rockets designed specifically for the NASA Lunar Lander challenge, the Xaero is the only VTVL rocket intended to carry payloads into suborbital trajectories. The test flight saw the Xaero propelled to an altitude of 444 meters (1,457 feet), before returning to Earth and making a perfect landing on its jets. However, the test flight took place on July 3 - after all, who wants to work on the fourth?

Microsoft Announces "Kinect Accelerator" to Turn Hacks into Businesses
Redmond is encouraging third-party Kinect creativity more actively, recognizing that its device truly belongs to the world.

David Zax 11/24/2011

The Kinect is a product famous for the ingenuity it has inspired in third parties; it's a product almost synonymous with the word "hack." According to some sources, Kinect was initially wary of non-sanctioned Kinect tinkering. Eventually it came around, releasing a software development kit, with the caveat that the SDK was only for non-commercial use. And now, with a new program, Microsoft gets fully behind the creativity its product has unlocked in others: it recently announced the launch of the Kinect Accelerator, which will help 10 Kinect-based startups get on their feet (so to speak).

SpaceX Dragon
The future of American spaceflight

The end of the shuttle program left the U.S. with two options for getting to space: paying for a seat on a foreign rocket or hiring a ride from a commercial space company. The commercial option became viable last December, when the SpaceX Dragon became the first privately built vehicle to orbit the Earth and return home safely. During Dragon’s unmanned flight, the 13,700-pound reusable capsule rode on top of a SpaceX-built Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center into orbit and circled the planet twice before splashing down 500 miles off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Dejan Kovac's router table

Dejan Kovac writes:
I used the layout and loose dimensioning from Norm Abrams's Deluxe Router Station.
I wanted to go with 18 mm thick plywood as he did, but then I found it is pretty expensive here in Croatia. The cheapest plywood for this project, with not much leftovers, would cost me about 100 $ - and that's without the MDF for the top and the fence, and all the other wood and hardware. That's why I decided to go with a spruce frame and thin plywood for the sides - a more complex but a lot cheaper alternative. And besides, since I'm still a novice I'll benefit from the experience, with all the joints and grooves in this design.
I started drawing the plan for the router station in order to get more familiar with SketchUp and I've got to notice it really takes up a lot of time. Now I better understand what it takes to make the plans with the details you include :)

Burt Rutan Is Up To Something…
By Jason Paur

Burt Rutan is up to something. He isn’t saying much about it, but whatever it is, you know it’s interesting.

There’s been plenty of speculation within the aviation world about whether Rutan would stop designing airplanes now that he’s retired from Scaled Composites. Imaginative and prolific, Rutan has been at the leading edge of aerospace design since the 1970s, and few thought he would simply play golf all the time. True to form, Rutan is working on a new aircraft design.

Rutan is famously secretive about designs that have yet to fly, though now that he is “retired” he is letting out a few more details than usual. The engineer told the Experimental Aviation Association he is tinkering with a design influenced to some extent by the lakes and rivers of Idaho, where he now lives after spending more than 40 years in the Mojave Desert. He also mentioned being influenced by the unusual Russian air/watercraft, like the MD-160 Lun-class ekranoplan, he saw shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union.

SteriPEN Freedom offers USB-powered water purification

By Pawel Piejko

Water purifier manufacturer SteriPEN has updated its lineup of portable products, with a UV-based unit called the SteriPEN Freedom. Billed as the smallest, lightest and first rechargeable UV water purifier on the market, it disinfects up to 16 oz (0.5 L) of water in 48 seconds.

We've previously covered numerous water purification solutions for the developing world, with LifeStraw, Moringa tree seeds, or even banana peels being notable examples. The new SteriPEN device, however, is defined as hiking and camping equipment by its manufacturer, rather than as a life-saving tool.

The Freedom features a germicidal UV light which destroys 99.9 percent of bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Forty-eight seconds is enough for the Freedom to deal with half a liter of water, while a liter simply requires repeating this operation. A green light gauge indicates when it's safe to drink the water.

Lazer Stunt Chasers pursue a spot of light across your floor

By Ben Coxworth

If you have both a laser pointer and either a cat or a dog in your home, you probably know how much fun it can be to watch your critter chasing after the laser light point on the floor. If you don't have any pets, however, now there's something else that will chase a laser for you - a toy car. Thinkway Toys' Lazer Stunt Chaser is a remote-control vehicle that goes wherever its user shines its laser light controller. Oh yeah, and its wheels light up, too.

Sportiiiis turns ordinary sunglasses into heads up display eyewear for cyclists
By Paul Ridden

Canada's 4iiii Innovations has developed a Head Up Display for athletes that can be mounted on virtually all glasses thanks to included universal attachment points, so there's no need to stop wearing your favorite pair of sport sunglasses. Sportiiiis - pronounced "sport-eyes" - receives crucial performance data from any paired monitoring device via ANT+ wireless technology, compares actual performance with desired workout zone parameters and then feeds real-time indicators back to the user via colored LED lights and audio updates.

Manned version of X-37 space plane in the works?

By David Szondy

When the Space Shuttle Atlantis touched down for the final time on July 21, 2011, it looked as if the notion of a manned spacecraft capable of going into orbit and then landing like a conventional airplane had been abandoned. The US government appears to be in favor of returning to Apollo-style space capsules with anything like the Shuttles being relegated to the private sector. But at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' (AIAA) recent Space 2011 conference, Arthur Grantz, chief engineer of Space and Intelligence Systems' Experimental Systems Group at Boeing, delivered a paper indicating that the U.S. Air Force and Boeing are already on the way toward developing a manned Shuttle replacement based on the X-37B robot space plane.
