The Universal Multipurpose Workbench
Dui ni shuo de dui
On Instructables, more than everywhere else, almost all projects will come out from some kind of workbench. However, and after quite a bit of research, I didn't find any model of workbench actually fitting my expectations. Some looked pretty nice, some other were easy to build, heavy duty, suited for wood working, mechanics or electronics, but none of them seemed to regroup all those characteristics together. This workbench was my attempt to solve this problem.
You are poor? Don't have much tools, space or woodworking experience? You are tired of sitting on the floor while you want to work on something? You are interested in every technological field and often will do electronics, woodworking, mechanic or 3D printing or milling? You want a workbench good for everything?
Then this workbench is for you!

3D Print a Programmable Musical Instrument
TINGYU QU
This Instructable is for you to build a 3D-printed programmable musical instrument. I was inspired by the beautiful sound from a real music box so I designed, printed and assembled a 1:1 model.
This is an interesting project for us to apply mechanical engineering ideas to create a music box. I designed the model by CAD Solidworks and printed the components by UP BOX and Form 2. The mechanical motion of the device is realized by the worm-and-gear system.
In reality, I do not own a 3D Metal Printer so the "reeds" of the musical instrument do not sound very graceful. However, the project shares useful experiences about how to 3D design and fabricate a delicate musical artwork.
To build the musical instrument, the following tools and materials need to be prepared.
1. 3D Printers: UP BOX, Formlabs Form II
2. 3D Printing Materials: PLA Filament, Tough Resin, Alcohol
3. Tools: Pliers, Tweezers
In this Instructable, both the Solidworks Part Documents and the STL Files are attached.

Start Fires With Electricity: DIY Arc Lightertanner_tech in
Have you ever wanted a futuristic way to start a fire, or maybe just a cool desk toy that makes plasma? Have you wanted to start a winter fire in a way that does not involve an actual lighter with lighter fluid? Have you ever wanted a lighter that you never have to replace or refill? If so, then this is the perfect instructable for you. In this instructable, I will show you how to build an arc lighter from old recycled parts. It looks really professional and well made. The video below has a demonstration of the final product as well as a video tutorial to compliment this instructable. I will be building this as a Christmas present for my younger brother.

Mindsets marca pontos

Cold Forming Plastic (CFP)
This plastic looks just like acrylic but has a toughness approaching polycarbonate and can be permanently formed into shape without heating – thus avoiding the use of ovens, strip heaters etc. It is also a shape-memory polymer since it will return to its original flat form on application of moderate heat – e.g., immersion in very hot water. To form the sheet, you can simply bend it by hand or using sheet metal folding equipment. (Alternatively, the sheet can be thermo-formed using conventional heating methods).

QTC Pill (Quantum Tunnelling composite)
Quantum tunnelling composite is a flexible polymer that exhibits extraordinary electrical properties. In its normal state it is a perfect insulator, but when compressed it becomes a more or less perfect conductor and able to pass very high currents. Polymers loaded with carbon are, at best, only partially conductive. In QTC, the change from non-conductor to conductor is dramatic, and a tiny piece measuring 4mm square and 1.5mm thick can pass a current of up to 10 amps when squeezed!

Anodised Aluminium Sheet
1 mm thick half-hard aluminium sheets with a minimum useable area of 290mm x 290 mm coloured both sides by high quality anodising. (Supplied slightly larger to allow for burning on edges). These brightly coloured sheets can be cut, punched, folded and generally post-formed without damage. (Uniform micro-cracking along a fold does not spoil appearance). This pre-coloured material is stunning in appearance and gives an immediate quality uplift to any application. (Quote colour - black, red, purple, blue).

Polycarbonate Sheet
This optically clear material is distinctive amongst sheet plastics because of its supreme impact resistance and toughness – and is used extensively in applications including:

- architectural glazing
- interior fittings
- safety guarding
- riot shields
- optical & medical instruments

It is not commonly available in smaller sheets and so we hope that the clear optical grade now supplied by TR will help to satisfy needs for small-scale prototyping. Despite its toughness and impact resistance, it can be guillotined, sawn, machined, drilled and thermo-formed very easily.

Tiny iron oxide particles promise big benefits for display technology

By Steven Hondrogiannis

Chemists at the University of California, Riverside, are developing a future display technology using nanoscale-sized iron oxide rods that shine when exposed to an external magnetic field. Though in its early stages, the research could pave the way for producing magnetically responsive, ultra high-res displays with significantly reduced dimensions and power demands.

The researchers have shown in the past that by using a simple magnet, the color of iron oxide particles suspended in water can be manipulated in response to the strength and orientation of a magnetic field.

The latest development is the application of silica to the iron oxide particles to form chains of light emitting particles that refract the visible light into brilliant colors when magnetically charged.

Novidades

Turning Waste Heat Into Power

UA physicists have discovered a new way of harvesting waste heat and turning it into electrical power. Taking advantage of quantum effects, the technology holds great promise for making cars, power plants, factories and solar panels more efficient.

What do a car engine, a power plant, a factory and a solar panel have in common? They all generate heat – a lot of which is wasted.
University of Arizona physicists have discovered a new way of harvesting waste heat and turning it into electrical power.

Titanium foams replace injured bones

Flexible yet rigid like a human bone, and immediately capable of bearing loads: A new kind of implant, made of titanium foam, resembles the inside of a bone in terms of its structural configuration. Not only does this make it less stiff than conventional massive implants. It also promotes ingrowth into surrounding bones.
The greater one‘s responsibilities, the more a person grows. The same principle applies to the human bone: The greater the forces it bears, the thicker the tissue it develops. Those parts of the human skeleton subject to lesser strains tend to have lesser bone density. The force of stress stimulates the growth of the matrix. Medical professionals will soon be able to utilize this effect more efficiently, so that implants bond to their patients‘ bones on more sustained and stable basis.

...E Turismo no Espaço!

Virgin to launch space tourism in 18 months

AFP - Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson said Monday that Virgin Galactic is on track to offer commercial space travel within 18 months, and that space hotels are next on the drawing board.
The project's SpaceshipTwo, an aircraft built by aviation engineer Burt Rutan and designed to carry paying customers into suborbital space, had its maiden flight in the California desert in March.
"We just finished building SpaceShipTwo. We are 18 months away from taking people into space," Branson told a business conference in Kuala Lumpur, adding that the fare will start at 200,000 dollars.
Virgin Galactic, which aims to become the world's first commercial company to promote space tourism, has already collected 45 million dollars in deposits from more than 330 people who have reserved seats aboard the six-person craft.

Uma Fornalha de Arco Eléctrico

O que está de errado nesta imagem? Faltam os ÓCULOS DE SOLDADOR!

Encontrei isto aqui:
http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2007/03/19/experimental-arc-furnace-melts-anything/
