James - Your first Arduino Robot

chickenparmi
So you want to make a robot? Don't know where to start? How about you learn how to make a robot with me and make James!
James was made as part of a Robotics Class I teach to a few high school students.

I called him James in memory of my late Grandfather James Henry Edwards who passed away 14-3-2013. He loved teaching and helping kids and died doing what he loved, hopefully this James will carry on that legacy.

Seed Spreading Robot

randofo

Last summer it was brought to my attention that you could buy nearly everything you needed for automated lawn care but a seed spreading robot. This intrigued me. For starters, why on Earth would anyone make lawn care robots in the first place? There are countless reasons this seems like a bad idea. Secondly, a seed spreading robot sounded like a bizarre robotic cross between Wall-E, and Johnny Appleseed. The idea clearly had potential.

So, when asked if I wanted to actually take on the challenge of building one, I obviously responded with a definitive yes. Even though I personally don't own a lawn (my backyard is concrete and weeds), it seemed like an opportunity too good to pass up. In terms of actually using it, I found a willing victim in Glenn Derene of Popular Mechanics. He was more than happy to let this thing loose on his lawn (along with a slew of other robotic lawn care contraptions). So one fateful day last summer, I tightened the last bolt, wrote the last line of code, packed it up safely, and shipped it cross country to meet whatever fate lie in store.

Artoo [R2] (ATtiny2313 Wall Avoiding Robot)

vishalapr

Since I had a lot of ATtiny2313s lying around I wanted to do something cool with them, I thought for a while and then decided to make a simple wall avoiding robot with the ATtiny2313, an ultrasonic sensor and 2 motors.

Its an easy to make and simple robot which runs on a very small amount of code so as to support and work with the ATtiny2313.

For those of you out there who want to make a small robot with the Arduino processing, but you are not able to as the Arduino is too big for a small robot, then this is the perfect robot for you!

Since the ATtiny2313 chip is much smaller compared to the Arduino, it fits in almost anywhere, which allows you to make a small simple robot which evades walls.

This is an Example of how you can use the Arduino to monitor various environmental parameters And display them on a LCD screen.

Abancador!

The Stooler turns almost anything into a chair

Dave Parrack

Upcycling is an often overlooked method of creating something worthwhile and usable from things most people would happily bin. Thankfully a select few designers are taking the practice seriously, and incorporating it into their work. One of the best examples comes from Andreu Carulla, the Spanish designer behind The Stooler, a simple tool which enables almost anything to be turned into a chair.

DAVID USB CMOS Monochrome Camera with Lens

Description
The brand-new DAVID USB CMOS Monochrome Camera captures 25 frames per second at a resolution of 1280 x 960 px. This camera works with a self-developed firmware including concerted functions for Structured-Light-Scanning. It is perfectly suitable for detailed 3D scans with DAVID-Laserscanner. A high-quality Computar lens (12mm focal length) is included.
Since the monochrome camera does not require any color filters, scan quality will be even better than with a CMOS color camera - however you will be able to capture colored textures with DAVID as well when using a color projector.

Wood Burning Sauna DIY

jrytlews
This is my first Instructable but I have used so many for ideas and love the community input!

I live in downstate Michigan and went to college in the UP met a whole crew of Finlanders and was introduced to the Sauna! and its pronounced SOuna not SAWNA but i still slip from time to time if you arnt a yooper it takes time.

I graduated and moved back downstate for work but my life was lacking because i no longer had access to the "poor mans medicine box" so naturally i want to fill that gap. Research began to see my options for having my own sauna. Student Loan debt is a mother sucker and takes up a large portion of my income so $$ was tight so building looked better than buying and of course is much more rewarding.

Bizarre self-balancing 1967 Gyro-X car to be restored

Ben Coxworth

Back in 1967, California-based Gyro Transport Systems built a prototype vehicle known as the Gyro-X. The automobile had just two wheels, one in front and one in the back and, as the car’s name implies, it utilized a built-in gyroscope to remain upright when not moving. Although its developers hoped to take the Gyro-X into production, the company went bankrupt, and the one-and-only specimen of the car became an orphan. For much of the past 40-plus years, that car has passed from owner to owner, its condition deteriorating along the way. Now, it’s about to be restored to its former (weird) glory.

Hexapod Robot based on FPGA
costaud

This is a hexapod robot which consists of twelve DC servo motor controlled by a FPGA chip. The framework  is programmable and extendible.we can design different programs to make the robot react in different ways.
I was inspired by the Kondo KMR-M6 Robot .(Kondo is an Japanese company makes robot models) I like this kind of modern toys but they are always too expensive to afford . Then just make one by hand  ,I thought.
The general idea is to carve every part of a single leg with plywood ,which takes a long time, and then try to copy it with PU glues since the robot gets six legs.
    Now let's begin.

Tortoise Shell Acrylic

Cast sheets good for use in laser cutters

We now offer tortoise shell acrylic sheets. It is great for making jewelry.

Electrodes for prosthetic arm permanently implanted into patient for first time

It took some time, but the age of the cyborg is upon us. For the first time, neuromuscular electrodes that enable a prosthetic arm and hand to be controlled by thought have been permanently implanted into the nerves and muscles of an amputee. The operation was carried out recently by a surgical team led by Dr Rickard Brånemark at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Goteborg, Sweden.

Nitinol! Construam a vossa Máquina-Maravilha

Memory spring and memory wire
Memory Wire
This nickel/titanium (NiTi) alloy initially ‘remembers’ that it should be straight. If it is bent into a different shape and then dropped in very hot water (90°C), it springs back to its original straight condition. It will repeat this behaviour any number of times.
The wire can also be heat treated to remember different shapes. It simply has to be held in the desired shape and then heated to 500°C in a small oven for a few minutes. This means that pupils can now get involved in creating smart springs and other components that a few years ago would have challenged front line researchers.
Memory wire has several important medical applications. It is used, for example, to make surgical stents – small woven frames that balloon outwards to open blocked arteries. It is also used for orthodontic braces. Some smart textiles use woven-in memory wire to change the shape (and support) of garments when they reach body temperature. Because it can be heat treated, the potential of memory wire in designing and making is virtually unlimited.
The wire is sold by the metre.
Two-Way Memory Spring
These remarkable springs, based on a brass alloy, ‘remember’ to open up at around 90°C and close again when cool. If immersed in hot water at or around 90°C they will open in a split second and close as quickly if dropped in cold water. Such springs have many industrial applications – e.g., in sprinkler and fire damping systems where they replace expensive single-use only fusible links.
Memory springs open and close with considerable force and are used in countless applications where movement is wanted at the opening and closure threshold temperatures.

Hardware is the New Web

An Arduino workshop at the Noisebridge hackerspace in San Francisco (© Mitch Altman, CC BY-SA 2.0)
With hardware start-ups on the increase, countless gadgets funded via Kickstarter and a resurgence of interest in electronics as a hobby, it looks as though hardware is set become the new Web.
From the first public radio broadcast in 1910 to the home computer revolution of the 1980s, electronics served as the most visible face of technology in the 20th century. When for almost 100 years everyday lives were being transformed by a stream of new appliances, intrepid early adopters could get a slice of the action if they could solder, and electronics empires were being born in garages.
With the arrival of the PC and then the Web we saw a shift in focus, and while software requires computers and the Internet is built upon networking and communications hardware, these took a backseat position and applications and online services garnered more attention. All the hottest start-ups were online and many budding engineers took to software development rather than soldering.
As we move further into the 21st century it appears that the balance may be redressed, with attention shifting back towards hardware — or perhaps products that span both physical and online worlds. What follows is a brief look at some of the enablers, drivers and indicators of this shift.

Ora toma!

Eduardo Saverin From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eduardo Saverin Born March 13, 1982 (age 30) São Paulo, Brazil Residence Singapore Nationality Brazilian[1] Alma mater Harvard University (B.S., Economics, 2006) Known for Co-founder of Facebook Net worth steady US $2 billion (March 2012)[2] Eduardo Luiz Saverin[3][4] (born March 13, 1982;[5] Portuguese: [eduˈaɾdu ˈsaveɾĩ] or [saveˈɾĩˑ]) is a Brazilian internet entrepreneur and investor.[6] Saverin is one of four co-founders of Facebook, along with Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.[7] As of 2012, he owns less than 5% of Facebook's shares and has a net worth of $2 billion, according to Forbes. The triple barrel, 18-shot Pistola con Caricato revolver

By Brian Dodson

A host of unusual firearms have been floated and (mostly) abandoned over the two centuries of largely trial-and-error design. After our recent coverage of Arsenal Firearm's AF2011-a1 double barrel semiautomatic pistol, we wondered if more extreme versions of multi-barrel repeating handguns existed. The outlandish Pistola con Caricato three-barreled revolver is a definite candidate.
This revolver was manufactured in Italy during the early part of the 20th century, complete with three barrels and 18 chambers in 6.35 x 16 mm semi-rimmed caliber (.25 ACP). While rather more bulky than one would want in a pocket handgun, 18 shots would provide a certain feeling of security in back alleys and dark lanes.

Make a cheap disposable camera capacitor bank

This instructable will show you have to make a simple capacitor bank and charger out of old disposable cameras that you can get for free at your local store.

You can then use it for powering things such as coil guns or just blowing things up! See the second picture above? that was the spark created when I discharged such a capacitor bank. It was also very loud too!

Pleasant3D v2.0

I frequently had the problem that downloaded STL files needed some minor editing in order to be printable on my MakerBot. Most of the time it was just a simple move to the center of the build platform or a resize.
In addition to that, I already wrote OpenGL code to visualize STL and GCode files a couple of months ago for another larger project.
Finally I had sometimes the problem that I downloaded a ASCII encoded STL file and wanted to open the file in my 3D/CAD application. Since this application can only read binary STL files I needed an easy way to convert ASCII STL to binary STL.
So I wrote Pleasant3D, a small utility which solves these problems and uses the above mentioned visualization code to display STL and GCode files:

3D printing, Kickstarter and old-fashioned perseverance: The tools of the modern inventor

By James Holloway

The near concurrent rise of Kickstarter and semi-affordable 3D printing means we live in a time when it is easier than ever to be an inventor of physical things. Kickstarter, the social network which lets members of the public invest, or, more accurately, support and become early adopters of new technology, has opened a completely new route to funding that is both democratic and meritocratic. 3D printing on the other hand means inventors can create test prototypes with relatively little expense and minimal difficulty. But though it may be easier than ever to be an inventor, that is not to say it is at all easy.

Ainda a prototipagem...

An Open Source Selective Laser Sintering 3D Printer for Rapid Manufacturing in Wax

Motivation:
The current leading open source 3D printers print only in ABS or PLA and are restricted both by the limitations inherent in these materials and by the limitations of the FDM process. Though these printers are entirely capable of self-replication and of producing parts for a variety of light-duty applications, they cannot produce pieces that can replace the cast aluminum parts found in power machinery, CNC equipment, or in numerous other high-strength applications.
Goals:
The goal of this project is to provide a method for rapidly manufacturing complex pieces in metal by manufacturing a wax "positive" of the object, which is then used to make a mold for the lost wax casting process. Current metal rapid manufacturing techniques rely on high-power lasers, plasma jets, or electric arcs to sinter metal powder. This approach sidesteps the higher costs and dangers of these high-power systems in favor of a relatively low power laser-sintering technique.
A complete report on the project with more technical details can be found here. A summary of this project can also be found on the RepRap Wiki

Um Aranhiço Mecânico

Notícia da Ponoko, um Aranhiço que desenha!

Pythagoras the drawing robot
A laser-cut delta robot that can draw better than I can

Aaron Fan is a robotics student at Georgia Tech. Over the past few months he has been regularly updating his website with details of his current project: Pythagoras the drawing robot. He covers a lot of ground, from the mathematics to the coding and hardware design.

I love this project because it ticks all my boxes: the parts are laser cut, the design is open source and well-documented, and the finished machine is equal parts ingenious and pointless. Check out this post for an overview of the project, or take a look after the break for video of the bot in action and examples of what it can draw.

1600 hp monster diesel firing up at Rétromobile 2012

By Ben Coxworth

Hey, you like really big engines? Well, here's one that's not going to fit under the hood of your F-150. This 30-ton (27-tonne) Type 9 V.O.S. engine is one of just three built by the French company Duvant in 1962. It's over 18 feet (5.5 meters) long, 11 feet (3.4 m) tall, and gulps down 350 liters (92.5 US gallons) of diesel fuel per hour. With its four valves per cylinder and turbocompressor, it is capable of producing 1600 horsepower. Best of all, should you happen to be in Paris this week, you can see the thing running.

This particular Type 9 spent 50 years in the basement of the Auteuil Race Course, in Paris. There, it drove a giant alternator, that could power the entire facility in the event of a power outage.

Lego Computer Case

Welcome to the Lego computer build instructable!  Through this tutorial I'll show you the general method for how to build a computer case of any style out of Legos!  To help with the instructions I'm going to use a Star Wars Imperial themed case that I put together.  The end goal should be to make a case EXACTLY how you want it though (i.e. custom colors, theme, exterior and interior shape, etc.) so you can accommodate whatever computer parts you want to use and whatever style you like.

Have you tried writing to the files with a sudo command? That should work with your current setup.
To get file writes for your normal user working, you need to use the uid and gid options to mount, to set the owner of files on the partition to your current userID. You probably also want either umask or dmask and fmask options.
Your mount command would look like this:
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda6 /media/FAT32 -o uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=022
# assuming your user's UID is 1000, GID is 1000
# umask=022 sets permission mode 755 for all files on the partition
