Uáháháháhá!
This week, Andrew Back blogs about Julius Baxter, a core member on the OpenRISC project, that focuses on developing a family of open source 32 and 64-bit RISC CPU architectures, and with power consumption being an important factor for many designers, Simon Holt has been looking into the latest families of 7 series FGPAs at each stage of the development cycle.
Raspberry Pi as a media player
The System On Chip (SOC) used by the Raspberry Pi looks like it was designed for set top boxes, and gives it some pretty impressive video performance. The first thing I wanted to do with my Pi was see if it could replace a venerable Kiss DP-600 as my living room media player.

New mineral, panguite, discovered in 1960s meteorite
By James HollowayA new mineral, named panguite, has been discovered by Caltech researchers examining the Allende meteorite that broke up in the skies over northern Mexico on February 8, 1969. Panguite, an oxide of titanium, becomes the ninth new mineral to be discovered in the meteorite by the team since 2007.Panguite was discovered using an electron microscope, examining what is known as an ultra-refractory inclusion, a scientific term for the oldest, least volatile objects within meteorites. Panguite's discoverers have therefore concluded that the mineral would have been one of the first solid materials in the solar system and is therefore in the order of 4.5 billion years old."Panguite is an especially exciting discovery since it is not only a new mineral, but also a material previously unknown to science," said Caltech's Chi Ma, an author of the paper in which the discovery was described.

New vaccine could provide lifetime immunity to nicotine addiction
By Darren QuickResearchers at Weill Cornell Medical College have developed a vaccine that could help existing smokers quit for good and prevent those yet to try cigarettes from ever becoming addicted. The vaccine turns the recipient’s kidney into a factory continuously churning out antibodies that clear the bloodstream of nicotine before it has a chance to reach the brain and deliver it’s addictive rush. Unlike previously tested nicotine vaccines that only last a few weeks, the effects of a single dose of this new vaccine should last a lifetime.

Sew LEDs into your Project!
It is really easy to include LEDs in your soft circuit project. For this I used a low-resistance conductive thread, from the lovely Lynne Bruning, some pliers, two sewing needles, and a bunch of green LEDs.
Begin by coiling the leads of your LEDs with pliers, remember that the cathode of your LED has a flat indent on it.
Sew two "rails" into your project - one for ground and one for positive. Embroider connection pads into your fabric, 3 or 4 stitches in the same place should be enough.

One-of-a-kind skateboard can descend stairsBy Ben CoxworthSkateboards are definitely a part of the urban landscape, but you know what else is? Stairs. Generally, the two don’t go together – when skateboarders reach a set of stairs, they typically have to pick up their board and carry it. London-based product designer Po-Chih Lai would like to see boarders be able to roll right on down those stairs, however, so he created a one-off skateboard that lets them do just that. It’s called the STAIR ROVER.

Build a Pocket Ionizing Radiation Detector (PIRD)
In this instructable I will be demonstrating how to build a pocket radiation detector or "PIRD." The parts for this radiation detector will all be salvaged (that means no pricey GM tube off of ebay), but building will require steady hands and alot of patience! This is a "clicking" radiation detector, unlike many other DIY versions without a Gieger-Muller tube out there, and I have yet to see anyone try this concept and/or make one like it. Although it may not be as sensitive or practical as a standard geiger counter, it does detect background radiation (most likely gamma rays).

Pocket sized 7 Color Laser with Spiro Projector
After finishing my first 7 color laser I decided to look at ways of making a smaller, pocket sized, version. You will discover as you read on that‚ the optical part is not a build for the faint hearted as there are a number of mods that require incredibly accurate work. The majority of the build, on the other hand is all down to basic, accurate fitting.
Sorry for the names of the steps I didn't know what to name them.
And don't for get to see Laser Projector Stuffed in a Lighter ,just click on it.
I have an account on the site above.

There are probably a few things you could do with a rescued 1980’s SCARA Robot Arm, given the technical know-how. Dane Kouttron is one guy who certainly knows his way around these industrial machines, and he has proven this by re-purposing a salvaged robotic arm to become a fully functional 3D printer.
Because the device has such a huge reach, it is able to print some sizeable objects – up to 25″ x 12″ x 6.5″. This scale has introduced all kinds of quirks, such as how to manage temperatures across the heated build platform and also sorting out the control interface for the servo motors and precision feedback sensors.

New SplinterBike Quantum all-wooden bike launched in time for London 2012 FestivalBy Paul RiddenAround about this time last year, we featured an all-wooden bike named SplinterBike that went on to be viewed by over 320,000 visitors to the Power of Making exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. A second version was used to set a new speed record for 100 percent wooden bikes in August 2011 and now the creator of both, Michael Thompson, has built a special SplinterBike Quantum (SBQ) edition for the 2012 London Olympics. A few design changes have been made to allow a variety of visitors to the Adain Avion event at the London 2012 Festival to mount up and ride an all-wooden bike for themselves, including adjustable seat height and a different gearing setup.

Making small fiberglass parts...
There has been a small but obnoxious rain leak in the aft cabin of my small sailboat. It looks like the source is where the outboard motor control cables pass through in the cockpit foot well wall. There was just an open hole there and the rain was getting in. That ought to be easy to fix. It just needs a cover that will keep the rain out instead of funneling it into the locker. But where would that come from? Who has the right size and shape in stock? I couldn't find exactly what I thought I needed, so I decided to bite the bullet and make it instead. This picture is the end result. Just a small cover to divert the rain water away from the hole in the wall. This was made in one afternoon and evening - hand laid fiberglass...

Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE seeks healthcare tech innovationsBy Ben CoxworthThe smartphones of today are certainly technological wonders. Besides their powerful processors and multitude of available apps, most of them are also equipped with sensors such as cameras, microphones, GPS, accelerometers and gyroscopes. While those sensor-laden phones allow users to perform a broad variety of activities, the folks at Nokia believe that those or similar devices could do much more – particularly when it comes to healthcare. That’s why the company is sponsoring the Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE. The US$2.25 million global competition is intended to “stimulate the development of sensors and sensing technology to drastically improve and expand the quality and access to healthcare across a wide variety of settings for consumers all around the globe.”

And here's the File:

The thick Rectangle stands as a guide, for the 3 mm thick plate, and the inner sides of the Frame are 3mm shorter, so you can plug the thing on the Frame. I also added a tall Rectangle in the middle, so you can print the 2 templates on plain A4 Portrait-oriented sheets of paper, then align those into just one.

Tactus Technology display brings physical buttons to the touchscreen
By Dario Borghino
California startup Tactus Technology recently caused plenty of "oohs" and "aahs" at SID Display Week 2012. The prototype touchscreen the company presented featured buttons that can rise out of the flat surface of the screen at the user's whim, disappearing completely once they are no longer needed. Beneath the surface of the screen are a number of microscopic channels that can be prearranged by the manufacturer, and a small amount of a clear oily substance. When the physical buttons are "switched on" by the user, the clear substance is pumped through the channels and the solid buttons magically rise out of the display. When the keyboard is switched off, the buttons disappear completely, leaving the user with a full-sized touchscreen device.

Testimonial: Richie's laser cut home gym!
(Brazil)
Richie has cut more CNC and laser projects than me and his skill is really showing – he’s also a fantastic designer whose projects are in my queue to render and launch on WoodMarvels.com once I get caught-up on the CNC table router end of things. Until then, he sent me some pictures of the Home Gym design I made a while back. Looking sharp!
Hot Glue Gun Extruder for Your CNC Machine or 3D Printer
3D Printing still costs a few dollars and may be out of reach of hobbiest who do not have any budget. The goal of this instructable is to construct an FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printer extruder (a key component) using a $3 Hot Glue Gun. If you don't think you have seen an FDM machine, you probably have. There are many hobby versions out on the market now ... Think Up!, Makerbot, RepRap, Up!, PrintrBot, Solidoodle etc.). The least expensive being around $500 to start. These printers typically use ABS or PLA plastic and push it into a hot extruder much like a hot glue gun.
If you’re really into cycling and are on this site, chances are that over the years you’ve at least toyed with the idea of making your own frame. There’s something truly special and deeply rewarding about riding something that you’ve built yourself, and being able to choose whatever custom geometry and extras that you want only adds to the appeal.

Homemake Wooden GoKart 2.0
Well, after my first and mostly successful wooden gokart, I decided to build a sturdier and better one. I used the same wheels, engine, axles, and seat from the first one. For specific details on mounting the engine, sprocket, and wheels, visit my first gokart. This is definitely an improvement from the first. For your convenience, I made a 3D Sketchup model. Download it here. The following steps contain pictures from Sketchup. I recommend you use Sketchup to find the exact dimensions.

Gorilla Glass maker unveils ultra-thin and flexible Willow Glass
By Adam WilliamsCorning announced details of a major new glass design at the eighth annual Display Week in Boston, a trade event hosted by the Society for Information Display. Named Willow Glass, Corning’s new glass is manufactured in such a way that allows it to reach temperatures of up to 500°C (932ºF) while maintaining a thickness of just 100 microns – or about that of a sheet of paper. The company's Gorilla Glass was first brought into being to meet Steve Jobs' need for a hard-wearing glass screen for the original iPhone, and has since appeared on smartphones from almost every major manufacturer, in addition to a host of tablets and televisions. Therefore, any new innovation claimed by Corning will be sure to grab the close attention of interested parties such as Apple, Nokia and Samsung.

Watch the H1 in action on Ustream. We will be posting announcements during this campaign when we will be print LIVE with the new H1.1
SeeMeCNC is back, with an updated version of our H-1 3D printers
Building upon our first version of the open-source Huxley, the H-1, we have re-designed many of the more difficult parts of building and adjusting our machines to make it easier and faster to assemble. We have also improved the bearing design of the origional reprap Huxley, from which the H in our machines name came from. We have re-designed the bearing assemblies on all axes to use bronze linear bushings instead of the more complicated and sometimes frustrating triple plastic bearings of the origional. Along with the new design improvements, we have listened to what a lot of people were saying, and offer the awesome RAMPS 1.4 boards by Ultimachine. The RAMPS setup is for those who want a dedicated 3D printer control solution.
