Laser Cut Record (version)
jojporg

Just last weekend, amandaghassaei published her Laser Cut Record. The work is more than great with a tons of experimentations and descriptions! However, thorough these days, we also prepared to publish our version of Laser Cut Record with prior acoustic information as a part of our "cutting record - a record without (or with) prior acoustic information" project at IAMAS. To be honest, the work is still in its experimental stage and very close to amandaghassaei's work. But we decide to publish it to stimulate the scene (Hope it exists!) and further investigations with a lot of common points and a few differences especially in our codes. Here is our version.

LulzBot TAZ claims largest build area for desktop 3D printers

Jonathan Fincher

If you're in the market for a 3D printer, there are plenty of qualities to weigh. Price, ease of use, size, and print resolution are all factors that could influence the types of objects you're able to create. If you want a printer that fits on your desk and can print objects the size of a basketball though, you may want to consider the latest model from Aleph Objects, Inc. The LulzBot TAZ 3D printer boasts an open source hardware approach in design and claims to have the largest print volume for desktop printers in its price range.

Impressoras 3D a 500 Dólares!

Open Design 3D Printed Headphones

Teague Labs have created these fully functioning headphones, named simply 13:30 after the time it takes to print them (13 hours and 30 minutes).
From the Teague Labs website:
With 3D printers becoming more accessible we decided to have a think around the concept “life in beta” as a future scenario. What if printed prototypes could become actual products? Meaning, once off the print bed an object could be assembled without any tools and be made functional by readily attainable components. I decided to stress test the premise with the challenge of making electronically simple yet functionally complex headphones.

Skate eléctrico, Razorlabs no DesignerStock, Raspberry Pi...

Boosted Boards skateboard claimed to be world's lightest electric vehicle

By Adam Williams

San Francisco-based startup Boosted Boards has produced an eponymous electric skateboard prototype capable of providing a push-free ride for up to 6 miles. While an electric skateboard isn't anything new in itself, this particular longboard is declared by its makers to be the world's lightest electric vehicle.

Boosted Boards markets the longboard as a “last mile” mode of transport; that is, a vehicle intended to complement existing public transportation infrastructure for the final leg of the journey home. The board consists of components which will be familiar to skaters and which sound suitably impressive to the rest of us: Loaded Vanguard, Bear Grizzly 852s, Otang 80A In Heats, and Jehu bearings. Weight is kept down to a transportable 12 – 15 lb (5.5 – 6.8 kg).

Ten essential Raspberry Pi projects

Ten projects for the Raspberry Pi that range from educational to fun via highly useful.
This is by no means an attempt at a definitive list and the term essential is somewhat subjective, but if you're stuck for something new to do with your Raspberry Pi there may be some ideas here

CTX Virtual Keyboard fits on a keychain

By Jonathan Fincher

Even though tablets and smartphones are improving and adding new features all the time, a shrunken keyboard on a touch screen still doesn't compare to the comfort of a full-sized keyboard for typing. There are plenty of solutions for this, from snap-on cases with keyboards built into them to keyboards that fold into a compact package. But these all just make your device less mobile or give you one more bulky thing to carry. For a more compact alternative, Brookstone has begun taking orders for a new virtual keyboard from CTX, which projects a usable laser keyboard onto any flat surface, all while fitting nicely inside a small keychain.

Silicone caulk be hacked into all kinds of useful things. This adhesive has the unique qualities of sticking well to some things and not others. This makes it easy to cast into many shapes. If you add corn starch, it can be cast or formed or glued into shapes of any thickness and it can set up within an hour. I call this mix Oogoo.

This instructable shows how to fix or make seven things:

Step 2- Make heavy duty rubber bands

Step 3- Make your own custom erasers

Step 4- Make a wallet pen

Step 5- Make a hot pot gripper

Step 6- Fix a broken bucket handle

Step 7- Make liquid tape to insulate splices

Step 8- Make a thread locker for nuts and bolts

Wood pulp extract stronger than carbon fiber or Kevlar

By Brian Dodson

The Forest Products Laboratory of the US Forest Service has opened a US$1.7 million pilot plant for the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from wood by-products materials such as wood chips and sawdust. Prepared properly, CNCs are stronger and stiffer than Kevlar or carbon fibers, so that putting CNC into composite materials results in high strength, low weight products. In addition, the cost of CNCs is less than ten percent of the cost of Kevlar fiber or carbon fiber. These qualities have attracted the interest of the military for use in lightweight armor and ballistic glass (CNCs are transparent), as well as companies in the automotive, aerospace, electronics, consumer products, and medical industries.

Zoetrope - come and get it!
Wed 5th Sep 2012
The zoetrope is a clever mechanism used to display animations. Popular in Victorian times the zoetrope has stood the test of time and is now available to download and make in cardboard form!

Turn the handle and the cylinder, with interchangeable picture strips, spins displaying an animated scene.
Members can download the files for free at the link above. non-members can download it for only £2.50. Print out the parts onto thin card. Note that there is a coloured version and non-coloured version in the file.

New BusStopper! September 5th, 2012

Time to welcome our first Guest Blogger, Edgar Castelo. His post below introduces one of his new inventions, enjoy!

Segments pop up, they appear, pop down, they disappear.
Couldn’t be simpler!
Cut the 3 Digits drawing, Bus2 02, on a thick material, and print the segments template, Bus2 01, on Cardboard, bending over the grey lines, and the middle of the black part. Rivet the holes, you got a Bus Stopper!
bs2
Get the plans, here:
Thanks to Edgar for contributing to our blog. If you would like to do the same, see our post on how here and get in touch.

Apreciado no Estrangeiro, ignorado em Portugal... Se calhar, até é melhor assim! LOL

Gamers may get a charge out of the Gauss Rifle

By Ben Coxworth

Well, Patrick Priebe might have outdone himself with this one. In the past, the German cyberpunk weapons-maker has brought us such creations as a wrist-mounted mini-crossbow, a laser-sighted rotary-saw-blade-shooting crossbow, and a flame-throwing glove. His latest nasty futuristic device? A video game-inspired electromagnetic weapon, called the Gauss Rifle.
Priebe told us that he took his inspiration from the K-Volt weapon, featured in the game Crysis 2. While he liked the look of the game’s version of the gun in first-person view, he wasn’t as keen on how it looked when placed on the ground ... so, he made his own version.
The 400-volt semi-automatic Gauss Rifle is what’s known as a multistage coilgun. It shoots 5.7-mm steel ammunition, from a built-in 8-slug clip. Priebe did his best to explain to us non-weapons-makers just how that ammo is fired.

APRECIEM!

3D Printing & the Culture of Creativity
Every day at Shapeways, thousands of people make their ideas real with 3D printing, and as a result, the Shapeways community is igniting a culture of creativity. So we're thrilled to launch a series of films about 3D printing and how this incredible technology is changing all of our lives.

This first video provides an inside look into the Shapeways vision, community, and 3D printing magic. If you're inspired, help ignite the culture of creativity and share the film!

UAV could map archeological sites in a fraction of the time currently required

By Ben Coxworth
If you were in Peru right now, at the long-abandoned Inca village of Mawchu, you might see something very modern flying over it – a Skate unmanned aerial vehicle. The aircraft is the key part of a system designed by a team from Nashville’s Vanderbilt University. Once perfected, it should be able to accomplish in 10 to 15 minutes what would take an archeological team two to three field seasons to complete.
The system is known as SUAVe, which stands for Semi-autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Created by engineering professor Julie A. Adams and archeologist Steven Wernke, it consists of the Skate paired with a custom software system. Using its onboard still camera, the UAV is intended to fly over archeological sites, creating high-resolution composite aerial maps.

Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE seeks healthcare tech innovations
By Ben Coxworth
The smartphones of today are certainly technological wonders. Besides their powerful processors and multitude of available apps, most of them are also equipped with sensors such as cameras, microphones, GPS, accelerometers and gyroscopes. While those sensor-laden phones allow users to perform a broad variety of activities, the folks at Nokia believe that those or similar devices could do much more – particularly when it comes to healthcare. That’s why the company is sponsoring the Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE. The US$2.25 million global competition is intended to “stimulate the development of sensors and sensing technology to drastically improve and expand the quality and access to healthcare across a wide variety of settings for consumers all around the globe.”
 http://www.gizmag.com/nokia-sensing-x-challenge/22879/

http://www.razorlab.co.uk/2012/06/piccolo-pocket-sized-cnc-bot/

Hummm...
