Arduino Launches New Affordable Nano Microcontroller BoardsHanna Watkin
Arduino is the Italian open-source computer hardware and software company announced a new family of affordable, microcontroller boards at last weekend’s Maker Faire Bay Area 2019.
“The new Nanos are for those millions of makers who love using the Arduino IDE for its simplicity and open source aspect, but just want a great value, small and powerful board they can trust for their compact projects,” said Massimo Banzi, co-founder of the Arduino project.
The company’s press release explains that these boards offer high quality and reliability, with a cheaper price tag. The microcontroller boards are also compatible with classic Arduino boards and boast low energy consumption. They’re also equipped with powerful processors.

2019 FreeCAD Tutorial for 3D Printing – 5 Easy Lessons
Rocío Jaimes Gutierrez

Welcome to our FreeCAD tutorial for 3D printing. FreeCAD is a 3D parametric modeler, designed to create and customize real-life objects. Its beauty lies on the easiness to modify your designs, together with the open-source principle, and of course, being for free.
In this 5-lesson FreeCAD tutorial, you will learn the basic commands and tools to visualize your ideas on screen for 3D printing. We will construct a seemingly simple object – step by step. After each instruction, you will find pictures highlighting the steps. By the end of this tutorial, you will be ready to print your first self-constructed CAD model.

Evezor: Open Source SCARA Robot ArmJeremy S. Cook

Per this project’s Kickstarter video seen below, when 3D printing first jumped came into the mainstream, many people thought they could now make anything they wanted, perhaps even many of them to sell with no human interaction. While true in some sense, these machines do require human intervention between prints, and can take a very long time to produce useful parts. Additionally, some designs may require a different tool, such as a laser cutter or CNC router. That, of course, means more space and money, and still there is the issue of machine tending.

SCAD to STL – How to Convert SCAD Files to STLBenjamin Goldschmidt

SCAD and STL files are two common file types for 3D design applications. SCAD stands for “Solid Computer Aided Design”, and the file format is used to describe 3D objects. It was pioneered by a software called “OpenSCAD,” which is a free CAD software for designing 3D objects. STL stands for “stereolithography” and is a popular file type to use with slicers for 3D printing.
The main difference between these two file types is in the way the models are described in code. In STL files, the 3D model is created using a “tiled” set of triangles along the surface of the object. This creates a fully 3D object. In contrast, SCAD files design an object using mathematical relationships. For example, a cube-like object can be described using its length, width, and height. This type of design can be useful for printing objects such as fractal art on objects.
Because the geometry used by STL files is more capable of conforming to complex designs, you may find you want to convert SCAD to STL. Lucky for you, there are two really easy ways to do this.

World's smallest neutron generator – it's not just for nukes anymore

By Brian Dodson

Neutron generators provide materials analysis and non-destructive testing tools to many industries, including oilfield operations, heavy mechanical production, art conservancy, detective work, and medicine. Many of these applications have been limited by the rather large size of current industrial and medical neutron sources. Now Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), whose main job is to develop and support the non-nuclear parts (including neutron generators) of nuclear weapons, has invented a new approach toward building tiny neutron generators called neutristors.

Small-scale wave-power - free energy from the beach!

Kiteman

Wave power is a much-neglected source of renewable energy.  More consistent and reliable than wind, it is suffering badly from lack of investment.

There are two main focuses for wave-power; off-shore waves, where the rolling action is exploited by floating buoys or the proven Pelamis system, and on-shore systems, where waves are used to push volumes of air through turbines, like the Limpet system, currently running off the Island of Islay.

This project is a proof-of-concept for a micro-scale system, based on the general concepts of the Limpet, that could developed into a useful source of power for remote beach communities, or exploited commercially to charge tourists' gadgets at the beach.

Re-curve Bow from Skis

mr magic

During my most recent skiing outing and I flexed my skis in such an extreme manner that Glenn Plake himself would have gone white as snow,my brain retained this idea that skis must be unbreakable.

So without much ado,I dug out the old vokle skis from the shed and got stuck in with a grinder and.............. that's pretty much the only tool you need.

I've made various types of bows over the years and this has been the simplest and most powerful by far and can also be dismantled for ease of storage or transport.

length and width of finished bow is personal preference and I imagine different eras or skis and models could be stronger or more flex. You could probably use a snowboard as would have benefit of having both ends re- curved or a freestyle ski ( but could be too long)

Like most sports you can set yourself up fro the whole sport at a garage sale for about 20 bucks, but whats the fun in that?

3D printed boat made from recycled milk jugs

WOOF (Washington Open Object Fabricators) made what may be the first functional 3D printed boat (any objection?). It was made with a 3D printer hacked together from a 4′ x 8′ plasma cutter and a homemade extruder. The material is #2 HDPE obtained by shredding 250 one-gallon milk jugs.
They entered the boat into the Seafair Milk Carton Derby. Apparently, their entry caused considerable debate and confusion, because the boats in this race are generally made from unaltered milk jugs strapped to a frame. The irony is that this 3D printed boat was the only entry made entirely from milk jugs without connection or support material.

DesignSpark ajuda-vos!

The right motherboard, key to project success

Contributed by Mark BVM

Choosing a motherboard can be a bewildering process. In the old days there was little to choose from, today it seems endless. ATX, micro-ATX, ITX, mini-ITX, the list goes on. The likes of ATX may seem old hat, but where different types of expansion card slots are required, an industrial ATX or micro-ATX motherboard could be your only option. Since Taiwanese firm VIA created Mini-ITX as a vehicle to promote their CPU chips in 2001, the small format motherboard has become fashionable and adopted by many desktop producers and embedded system builders alike. Care needs to be taken to differentiate the desktop specification from the IPC offerings. A True IPC SBC should be expected to have a production life of at least three to five years. In contrast, the desktop requirement is often to chase specification, resulting in frequent changes and updates. Other popular formats on the Embedded or IPC stage are 3.5" and 5.25" and more recently, the Pico-ITX. Each has its place, dependent on the final application and the facilities required in the target system.

FoldaRap: portable 3D printer

A 3D printer suitable for secret agents?
This is the first 3D printer I’d consider worthy of Ian Fleming’s Q character in the world of 007. The FoldaRap is a derivative of the RepRap project, the first to be a truely portable 3D printer. It is designed to fit within a tough travelling case.

The machine was influenced by Emmanuel Gilloz’s frustration travelling to 3D printing meetups with his machine. The typical A-frame structure of RepRap machines are not particularly compact, nor efficient in their use of space. Gilloz originally put together the RepRap family tree, and after about 6 months of development on the FoldaRap, he’ll now be able to add his own portable creation to the replicator genealogy table.

Masten Space Systems takes their Xaero suborbital rocket out for a spin
By Brian Dodson
In celebration of the two hundred and thirty sixth anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence from British rule, Masten Space Systems has performed a record-setting flight of their vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) Xaero suborbital rocket at the Mohave Air and Space Port. Unlike the rockets designed specifically for the NASA Lunar Lander challenge, the Xaero is the only VTVL rocket intended to carry payloads into suborbital trajectories. The test flight saw the Xaero propelled to an altitude of 444 meters (1,457 feet), before returning to Earth and making a perfect landing on its jets. However, the test flight took place on July 3 - after all, who wants to work on the fourth?

How to Make Homemade Ultrasonic Cleaner Solvent

An ultrasonic cleaner is a cleaning devise that helps to clean delicate and hard to clean items using ultrasonic and cleaning solution. Ultrasonic cleaning is the most effective method of cleaning and can be easily incorporated into any industry as well as home.
Ultrasonic cleaning is not only meant for industrial use. It is widely used for cleaning, fragile, delicate items like jewelry, watches as well as cleaning stubborn dirt. Portable ultrasonic cleaners are boon for home makers cleaning which uses ultrasonic cleaner solution to clean the items effectively.
Ultrasonic cleaners use high frequency sound waves to agitate the cleaning solvents. This in turn makes the ultrasonic cleaner solvent particles to clean dirt from the substances with a very high speed. Thus, even stubborn stains could be completely eliminated.

Brazilian researchers develop new anti-inflammatory for severe pain

By Antonio Pasolini
Researchers at Butantan Institute in São Paulo, Brazil, have developed a powerful new anti-inflammatory to relieve hard-to-control pain. Initial tests have confirmed the efficacy of the medication, which is based on a protein found in the blood.
The main breakthrough of the research is the successful synthesizing of a protein produced by the human body, the calcium binding S100A9. Under certain conditions, this protein is used by our bodies to keep pain under control. To make the medication, the scientists discovered that only a small part of the protein is required, which leads to reduced production costs.
According to researcher Renata Giorgi, the discovery represents an important step forward in relation to drugs available in Brazil. In particular the new drug offers two important advantages: it is more powerful and it can be administered orally.

Build a Pocket Ionizing Radiation Detector (PIRD)

In this instructable I will be demonstrating how to build a pocket radiation detector or "PIRD." The parts for this radiation detector will all be salvaged (that means no pricey GM tube off of ebay), but building will require steady hands and alot of patience! This is a "clicking" radiation detector, unlike many other DIY versions without a Gieger-Muller tube out there, and I have yet to see anyone try this concept and/or make one like it. Although it may not be as sensitive or practical as a standard geiger counter, it does detect background radiation (most likely gamma rays).
