SLA 3D Printing Problems: Nothing is Printing

The 3D printing gods look unfavorably upon you. You’ve half an hour spent meticulously placing supports to try and ensure success, but now nothing is even sticking to the print plate. And the injustice of it all? You probably had to wait hundreds of layers to even tell.

Duct Tape Dispenser

How To Use Inkscape Like A Pro
Want to design products but don’t have the budget for expensive software? Or do you simply like the ethos and flexibility of open source software? Inkscape, a professional vector graphics editor for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, is a great tool you can use to design products for any number of applications, including laser cutting. And the best part? It’s open source—and FREE.
When designing products, vector graphics are critical because they maintain quality when saved and scaled. Additionally, software that creates vector paths can export both visual artwork and files to be machined. This kind of multitasking is awesome!
While Inkscape is a good alternative to paid programs such as Adobe Illustrator, it may require a bit more time to learn than its counterpart. To help you feel comfortable understanding Inkscape basics, we’ve created this guide to walk you through how to use Inkscape for design projects.

Chateia!

3D Design for 3D Printing
tinygeek

If you're going to have a 3D Printer, you have to be able to design things to print with it. Thingiverse can only take you so far, you know. The only problem with Makerbot/RepRap style 3D printers is that they have limitations. Some overhangs can't be printed, layer delamination can cause parts to break, etc. My goal in writing this article is to create a guide for how to design around the limitations of this type of printer to create strong, functional parts.

Maslow!

You are going to build amazing things.

Maslow is a community driven open source project with the goal of making large format CNC technology available to everyone. We believe in a world where people everywhere can collaborate, share, and build amazing things together.

What is the Maslow CNC Machine?

Maslow is a large (4'x8') CNC cutting machine designed to let you cut big, useful things out of wood and other flat materials. Cut out a tiny house, a kayak, a tree house, some furniture, or anything else you can imagine. Maslow is designed to be affordable to buy, cheap to ship, easy to use, and powerful. Because designs can be shared digitally, you can build on the work of others or create your own from scratch. Here is our Kickstarter video which is a little out of date, but explains the projects goals well.

2D to 3D, Image to Svg to 3D
Edgar

I've become fascinated with those X-Ray Videos of working Mechanisms, and so, I wanted to make some MDF cut plates of them, just for fun.
So, I went to the Net to search for some 3D Files, but the ones I've found are crap, either Homemade Firearms, or 3D for movies, so I went to do them from scratch.
Here's my tips on how to do it;
How to turn any 2D image, into an Object, or into many parts of a 3D Project.

Battery Cases for Electronic Kits.
liquidhandwash

If you have built one of the cheap electronic kits featured in my previous instructable, you probably want to put in some sort of case. Having your project in a nice looking case will really make your project look great and will impress your friends much more than a naked PCB with wires and a battery hanging off it. Your project should be something you can be proud of, take to a job interview and say look what I made!
This instructable will show you whats possible with a little thought and a laser cutter.
There are four types of cases shown here,
  •  Case without a battery or switch: The easiest to make but you will need to run a lead to your power supply.
  •  Case with a battery: Great if your kit has a switch.
  •  Case with a battery and switch: The most challenging to build, but some kits don't have a switch.
  •  Case with a push button, battery and switch.

97 Examples of Tech-Free Toys
Katherine Pendrill

From DIY Paper Box Puppets to Wooden Coloring Books

While miniature robots and app-controlled playthings may be on the rise, there is still a growing demand from consumers for simple tech-free toys that allow children to embrace their imagination. Made from minimalist materials and featuring straightforwards designs, these timeless toys prove that children don't necessarily need the latest high-tech products.
For boys, there are a number of tech-free toys that are heavily focused on building. For example, there are home-inspired wooden building blocks, cardboard architecture kits and paper-based medieval toys, all of which offer boys the possibility of building their own creations from simple and uncomplicated materials.
For girls, these tech-free toys offer creative and artistic options that go beyond traditional plastic dolls. Some of the most innovative toys for girls are empowering coloring books, DIY paper doll crafts and miniature felt garden play sets. Despite their simplistic design and lack of smart technology, these tech-free toy options for girls are extraordinarily imaginative and highly educational.

The amazing science behind HP’s new full-color 3D printers
Garage Staff

Today, HP unveiled its groundbreaking low-cost, full-color 3D printers at the annual SOLIDWORKS World 3D design and manufacturing trade event. The new HP Jet Fusion 300/500 printers are an industry first: capable of creating production-quality prototypes quickly, accurately and affordably — making advanced 3D technology accessible to a wider swath of digital innovators. And this huge leap forward in 3D printing began as HP explored a surprising realm of light — one that we’re unable to see.
Cheryl MacLeod, HP’s Global Head of 3D Fusion Science, leads the team of scientists and engineers at HP’s 3D Open Materials and Applications Lab in Corvallis, Oregon who are charged with developing the science behind the company’s portfolio of 3D printing materials. “We ultimately think of printing as a way to convey information,” says MacLeod. “And with 3D color printing, we now have an entirely new language.”
Breakthrough 1: Seeing the light
In developing the new Jet Fusion technology, HP’s 3D R&D teams called on the company’s deep expertise in the science of ink to create black fusing agents able to absorb heat at greater speeds, as is needed for 3D printing. But printing color with exclusively black agents isn’t possible, so a new solution needed to be found.

The new HP Jet Fusion 300/500 printers are an industry first: capable of creating production-quality prototypes quickly, accurately and affordably.
HP’s scientists realized that they needed a primer coat of white on the outer layers of the black parts being produced so that color could be applied and fused. But how could you create a layer of white when all available fusing agents were black? A new kind of fusing agent was needed, so that the surface of the fused part remained white, but absorbed heat as well as black. And they found the answer in an unexpected realm of light — one that we’re unable to see.

Measuring Success: Maker Crushes Kickstarter Goal By 2,087%
Lisa Horn

The Secret Behind The Elegant Instrument That Measures The Golden Ratio
Sir Edward Victor Appleton, 1947 Nobel Laureate in physics, said: “The golden ratio is the key to universal physics.” And for Scott Onstott, founder of SIPS Productions Inc., the golden ratio is the key to a Kickstarter campaign success story that had this maker crushing his initial goal to raise $1,618 by 2087%.
The Golden Ratio Is Everywhere (Even If You Don’t Know It)
From great works of art down to the credit card in your wallet, the golden ratio is everywhere. In mathematical terms, the ratio is 1:1.618. While these numbers may not hold much meaning to the casual observer, they have been studied by scholars for centuries.
“Some of the greatest mathematical minds of all ages, from Pythagoras and Euclid in ancient Greece, through the medieval Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa and the Renaissance astronomer Johannes Kepler, to present-day scientific figures such as Oxford physicist Roger Penrose, have spent endless hours over this simple ratio and its properties,” says Israeli astrophysicist Mario

Visual 3D Print Finishing Guide
Tom Nardi
With 3D printers now dropping to record low prices, more and more people are getting on the additive manufacturing bandwagon. As a long time believer in consumer-level desktop 3D printing, this is a very exciting time for me; the creativity coming out of places like Thingiverse or the 3D printing communities on Reddit is absolutely incredible. But the realist in me knows that despite what slick promotional material from the manufacturers may lead you to believe, these aren’t Star Trek-level replicators. What comes out of these machines is often riddled with imperfections (from small to soul crushing), and can require considerable cleanup work before they start to look like finished pieces.

using Inkscape and Gcodetools for CNC plasma cutting

Mr. Hay's Technology
I like SheetCam for generating G-code for a CNC plasma cutter from DXF or SVG drawings, but I prefer free and/or open source programs that students can use on their own computers. Inkscape and the Gcodetools plug-in achieve that.
Version 0.49 of Inkscape will include Gcodetools, but until then we have to extract the contents of the Gcodetools download (using a program such as 7-zip) and put them in the appropriate Inkscape directory (probably c:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\extensions\ on Windows).

Free Downloads for Students. Part 1: An Introduction to PTC Academic Programs

CAT MCCLINTOCK
PTC is an enthusiastic supporter of STEM education in schools, sponsoring programs for students of all ages. We do this by offering software, training, curriculum, awards, and mentorship. In fact, you’ll find PTC software used in 25,000 secondary schools and 2500 universities in 50 countries around the world. Add it up, and that’s about 10 million students.
If you’re not familiar with our academic programs, start with the video below, and then read on for more details.

Engineering A 3 Wheel Vehicle Chassis

MechEngineerMike
My university senior project was extremely ambitious. Over the course of a year (2011), myself and three other mechanical engineering students designed and fabricated a complete solar race car chassis including the frame, suspension, hubs, spindles, brakes, & steering.
Its been almost 5 years now but vehicle design is just as fascinating to me today. In retrospect any one of the above systems would have been an adequate senior design project. My decision to attempt all of them together reveals the ignorance/arrogance/ambition of my younger self. In the end we were successful though and I learned a heck of a lot about chassis design. I'm sure there are a few more ambitious university students out there who could benefit from my experiences.
This instructable will discuss the engineering process of designing a custom 3 wheel vehicle chassis. The project consisted of research on vehicle dynamics theory and calculations, 3D modelling, structural stress analysis, designing around human factors, component sourcing, and lots of time spent fabricating.

Worlds Smallest DIY Survival Kit

Akinventor
I have created what I think to be the world's smallest survival kit. While this kit is certainly not the only thing you should count on, it is very useful and tightly packed. I can say for sure that at lease one of the things would help in nearly any survival situation, if not more. The tape, the thread, and the fire making kit are avery useful. I have not used this kit to do so, but I have made fires from one match and no external tinder many times. Please do not comment below telling me how I will die in the wilderness, I am from Alaska and I always carry more than just this one kit.
Here is what the kit includes:
Fish Hook
Needle
3 feet of cord
Two Matches and striker
Fire tinder
Knife
Compass needle for DIY compass
1 foot of electrical tape
These things can be used with the combination of the outdoors to equal:
Food
Shelter
Repair
Finding your way home

http://www.vhntech.com/assets/alibre/GeomagicDesignWhatsNew.pdf

Introducing SVG Cleaner

If you do a lot of drawing in Inkscape, you know that unused elements tend to accumulate and blow up size of SVG documents. This is where recently released SVG Cleaner 0.2 comes to rescue.
Basically the application does two things:
  • removing elements and attributes that don't contribute to the final rendering;
  • making those elements and attributes that are actually used more compact.
While Inkscape's Vacuum Defs command only cleans up unused gradients and suchlike, and Scour-based exporter provides some additional options, SVG Cleaner provides far, far more options and works in batch mode.
Besides, you still need cleaning up files from Adobe Illustrator and Corel DRAW (Inkscape can do it for the former, btw).

DIY Glow 3D Printer
searx
If you  read my interests, you probably know that I love studying the 3D printer we have at school to see how it works. If anyone wants to know more about 3d printing, there is a really cool article here. Anyway,  I spent about a month (as an engineering student I know how important research is) sketching designs and building prototypes. After that I finally found a design that fit my needs. This printer is based on the brain of a mindstorm NXT because it is easy to program and my arduino chip is burnt out and I'm still trying to save up to buy a new one. This printer only prints as accurately as you program it, but I will show you the best method of programming. The design includes x-axis and  y-axis movement as well as z-axis movement used to pump down the printing material.
Time to make: about 4 hours if you have all of the pieces in front of you
