DIY Desktop 5-axis CNC Mill

i_nerantzis

OK, you bought your router and you are happy with it. If you are an artist.

But... if you are an engineer... you probably are not so happy.

You cut some 2D stuff. Then try some 2.5D and start getting excited. And then, there comes a day when you start wondering... What if I can make something more out of my 3-axis router?

Then it comes to your mind that you can always convert one of the axis from linear to rotary! Yes this is it! You start doing it... you succeed, but deep down inside you know it.

You have to go all the way to the end and do it properly. You need to make the conversion to a full 5-axis machine to be satisfied! If you feel like it, then follow my lead...

An Unexpected Bioprinting Advantage Over COVID-19

Kerry Stevenson

Researchers have been using bioprinting technology to assist in the development of COVID-19 treatments.

According to a report in the New York Times, researchers at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine unexpectedly discovered a new approach: 3D bioprinted miniature organs. These human-like replications mimic much of the actual body functions, and thus are ideal for use in testing.

The miniature organs, which apparently include lung and colon analogs, offer a trouble-free testing platform that doesn’t risk any human or animal well-being. In addition, these miniature organs are far more closely related, biologically, than mammals that have previously been used for testing.

There’s another advantage in that these bioprinted organ analogs can be continually monitored, unlike, say the lungs inside of a test subject, which are a bit hard to access. In this way those performing tests can directly observe the effects of their prototype treatments.

First LIDAR 3D Scanning Apps Appearing

Kerry Stevenson

There’s now at least one new app that takes advantage of Apple’s new LIDAR capability.

A few months ago Apple unexpectedly announced a new iPad Pro model equipped with LIDAR. LIDAR is a range-sensing technology that is often used in high-end equipment for 3D scanning, particularly for landscapes. Seeing it appear in an affordable consumer tablet was quite a shock.

Apple’s intention was to provide additional sensor information to aid their Augmented Reality operations. In other words, when you’re pasting that virtual IKEA couch in your living room view, the couch is positioned more accurately.

However, the presence of a new 3D scanning sensor in an iPad obviously hints that someone would, sooner or later, develop a specialized 3D scanning app to make good use of it.

That now seems to have happened, with startup SiteScape now beta-testing just such an app

Toy Crossbow

NobodyNothing13

I started designing this crossbow in Tinkercad a while back, and it came out pretty well. After I finished, the design just sat untouched. Recently, I have looked back at my old design, noticing it still had many issues, like the fact that you had to use hot glue to assemble it, the striker was very short, nothing held the marble in place, it wasn't very powerful, and so on. So, I started refining this design, and fixed a lot of problems and made this crossbow easier to use, easier to assemble, more powerful and more accurate.

I made this toy crossbow to be a toy, and also part of a game. You can just launch marbles around for fun, but you can also play a game with these, with as many players as you want. In the game, you have a crossbow, some marbles, and 5 targets (I used plastic army guys). Then, you take turns shooting at your opponent's targets. You launch a marble, they launch a marble, and so on. I usually draw boundaries of how close your crossbow can get to your opponent's targets. You are eliminated if all 5 of your targets fall, and the last person who still has standing targets wins!

In the rest of this instructable, I will tell you how to print, assemble, and use this crossbow.

Exploring mbed with the Application Board

Andrew Back

A first look at the mbed platform and the recently launched Application Board.
I'm embarrassed to admit that the mbed platform has remained on my must-properly-investigate list for quite a long time. In fact, from since just before mbed's Chris Styles presented at an OSHUG meeting back in September 2010, and for whatever reason — most likely a pre-occupation with numerous other things of a technical nature — I haven't get round to taking a closer look until now.
What follows is by no means a thorough exploration of all the features that the mbed platform provides — that would require a much longer post — but rather instead a look at the out-of-box experience with an mbed module and the brand new Application Board.
It's safe to say that this won't be the last post on the topic!

The ServoCam is a web-enabled, servo controlled, digital camera. The miniature servos allow the camera to pan and tilt. The camera itself includes JPEG image compression and a UART interface. The hardware and example software developed for this project provides a platform which can be easily further refined into any number of applications.

New Invention Could Help Reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sarah Terzo

Sudden infant death syndrome, also known as crib death, is responsible for the deaths of 7000 infants a year. Now a new invention has been made that might drastically reduce this number.

Researchers at The Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin have developed a circuit board made of polyurethane which can be put inside baby’s clothes and monitor the breathing of the infant.  If the child stops breathing, the device alerts parents, who can then render first aid and save the baby before it is too late.

State-of-the-art rocket-powered motorcycle sells on eBay

Brian Dodson

A state-of-the-art rocket-powered motorcycle that was recently advertised for sale on eBay has been sold to Gerd Habermann Racing. Engineered to hit speeds in excess of 400 mph (640 km/h) during the quarter-mile, the bike was designed and built by Glenn Brittian, one of the few drivers licensed by the National Hot Rod Association to drive a rocket dragster. The asking price was US$27,000, but the actual selling price has not been made public.

X-ray device traps airborne pathogens and neutralizes them

Ben Coxworth

Help may be on the way for people with compromised immune systems, severe allergies, or who otherwise have to be wary of airborne nasties. A team of scientists have created something known as a soft x-ray electrostatic precipitator, or an SXC ESP for short. It filters all manner of bacteria, allergens, viruses, and ultrafine particles from the air – plus, it kills everything it catches.
Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) already exist, and work by applying an electrical charge to airborne particles, which are subsequently drawn to an oppositely-charged metallic collection plate. According to the researchers, however, ESPs aren’t very efficient at trapping smaller particles – specifically in the submicrometer and nanometer size range.

Borlas e telelés

Eis uma Borla, uma Moldura para fazerem em Cartolina, ou o que quizerem;

Can't give it a rest!
Here's my new Frame version, and I'll add the Vector File, so you can make your own Frames, just change the Dimensions:

And here's the File:
Link

The thick Rectangle stands as a guide, for the 3 mm thick plate, and the inner sides of the Frame are 3mm shorter, so you can plug the thing on the Frame. I also added a tall Rectangle in the middle, so you can print the 2 templates on plain A4 Portrait-oriented sheets of paper, then align those into just one.

No CAD skills? No problem. Formulor lets anyone create lasercut designs

Berlin-based company Formulor was founded by a team with over ten years of experience in laser-cutting and design. Formulor launched in 2010 and became our first manufacturing partner in the EU.
With the release of the Personal Factory API, the Formulor team began working on a whole new site and improved user interface.
The new Formulor site is now live and features a great built-in design tool that lets you create your design right on the page.
Just pick your material (25 to choose from), select a size and thickness, then start creating your design with the various shape, text, and line tools.

Tactus Technology display brings physical buttons to the touchscreen
By Dario Borghino
California startup Tactus Technology recently caused plenty of "oohs" and "aahs" at SID Display Week 2012. The prototype touchscreen the company presented featured buttons that can rise out of the flat surface of the screen at the user's whim, disappearing completely once they are no longer needed. Beneath the surface of the screen are a number of microscopic channels that can be prearranged by the manufacturer, and a small amount of a clear oily substance. When the physical buttons are "switched on" by the user, the clear substance is pumped through the channels and the solid buttons magically rise out of the display. When the keyboard is switched off, the buttons disappear completely, leaving the user with a full-sized touchscreen device.

MIT students turn whole building into huge game of Tetris
By Paul Ridden
The two-hundred and ninety-five feet (ninety meter) tall Building 54 on MIT's Cambridge campus has become the canvas for a number of carefully planned and daringly executed visual displays over the years, not strictly allowed by the administration but often looked upon with some appreciation. The building is home to the Institute's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science (EAPS) and has a host of meteorological instruments and radio communications equipment on its roof - but its the grid-like windows to the front that have become the main attraction to hackers, as they are known. The latest hack is the successful realization of a long-standing challenge, a huge playable game of Tetris.

...E que tal fazerem a vossa própria Máquina CNC?

Make Your Own DIY CNC

This instructable outlines the assembly process of my 2nd generation CNC machine which I designed to be simple to build and quiet enough to be apartment friendly. I have included example projects that I have made in the first two weeks of using the machine to demonstrate its capabilities.

This is the second CNC machine that I have designed and built. My first machine was based off of
oomlout’s instructable “How to make a Three Axis CNC Machine (Cheaply and Easily)” (by far my favorite instructable and the one that got me hooked on the site). It was moderately successful, cutting a number of parts from foam (a summary of parts made can be found on my abandoned blog here along with some build photos). The lack of overall stiffness and play in the linear mechanisms meant that plywood and plastics could not be cut effectively. The biggest downfall of the machine was the difficulty to setup and square the axes and lacked the ability to make fine adjustments once set up. The drive pulleys were sandwiched between the gantry sides and if a pulley loosened the entire gantry structure had to be disassembled and put back together and squared all over again (a couple evenings of work).

Self-sculpting smart sand could assemble itself into solid replicas of objects

By Jan Belezina
Research currently underway at MIT’s Distributed Robotic Laboratory (DRL) could lead to an innovative replicative manufacturing technique with the disruptive potential equal to that of 3D printing. Imagine a sand-like material that could autonomously assemble itself into a replica of any object encased within. Incredible though this may sound, the DRL researchers have already managed to build a large scale proof-of-concept, with 10-mm cubes acting as the grains.

Before we go into how these cubes - or "smart pebbles" - work, let’s sketch out the general concept. The idea is to create objects using a subtractive method, where excess material is removed just like when carving in stone. Each grain of smart sand would be a self-contained micro computer. These tiny machines would use an elaborate algorithm to communicate with the neighboring particles in order to establish the exact position and shape of the input object so that it can be replicated.
