A 3D printable AEP7 laser pistol (Fallout)

dragonator

A fully 3D printable version of the AEP7 Laser Pistol from fallout 3 and New Vegas. It can be printed in around 30 hours and requires 1kg of material. It requires a lot of support and is challenging to print, but the pay-off is most certainly worth it.

Edgar the Inventor

Edgar is a Portuguese inventor who won the Gold Medal in Geneva (2002) for his Triosk (Kiosk on wheels for the disabled) as well as several other awards and medals across Europe for his ideas. He has worked with computers since the Spectrum 48Ks and been on the net since the 80s. He is the author of the book "Prototypes: To build a prototype without giving up" and the popuar site, "Build your stuff", in English, https://sites.google.com/site/buildyourstuff/ , and a Prototype building Blog, Faz você mesmo, in Portuguese, http://faz-voce-mesmo.blogspot.com.

Ray Gun

Only one moving part, the trigger but you can easily configure it with a laser diode to produce the light as seen in the video.

Vão lá, e ponham a vossa Máquina de corte Laser CNC a bom uso:

http://cncking.com/collaborations/laser-cutter/edgar-the-inventor/ray-gun.html

A Serra Pendular

Ora, eu cá aproveito logo para ir aprender alguma coisa na Net, dá-me para isso, e por isso, saquei estes 2 Vídeos;

Meninos e meninas, querem fazer uns trocados?

Paspi PC Portátil, Sketchy Phisics, CncKing, GPS-Google Earth, e Prateleiras

LapPi - A Raspberry Pi Netbook

SilverJimny

The Raspberry Pi is a remarkable machine. Lightweight, powerful, and until now it was completely tethered to a wall socket. The LapPi is built to free the Pi! It's made from a mixture of spare parts, unallocated electronics, and scrapped components & cables I have built it in response to the Raspberry Pi Challenge. The challenge was picked up on the 15th of October via retweet from @raspberry_pi, and by the end of the day I knew what I wanted to do....

The basic idea is simple. Put a Raspberry Pi inside an aluminum case, wire it up to a screen, keyboard, mouse & batteries. Then plug in a USB hub, connect Wifi, Bluetooth, and the receiver for a wireless keyboard. We will also need to extend the Network port, add a headphone socket & speakers, fit in a battery pack, and then wire it all together! Simples.

Gears and Joints with SketchUp & Sketchy Physics Part 2

Rich Decibels

Following on from last week's introductory tutorial, here's a bit more information on how to make mechanical models in SketchUp with SketchyPhysics (SP). Here's a great resource if you want to learn more about mechanical linkages, gears, and all that good stuff (hat tip to Edgar Castelo for the link).

We are under major reconstruction at the moment merging content from WoodMarvels.com and 3DMarvels.com - although orders can be made, expect some broken links and general confusion over the next few days as the migration is undertaken.

WoodMarvels.com is an on-demand laser cutter of wooden items that are shipped right to your door! We are all about instilling a sense of pride in not only yourself but in those around you while building unique, carbon neutral models that will be cherished for generations to come! Feel free to also find out more about us.

Connect your LS20031 GPS receiver to Google Earth via PC

UPDATES

Oct 31: Corrected pin numbers for how to wire the SN74AHC125  IC.

INTRODUCTION

In this guide I will hook-up the L20031 GPS receiver to a PC (most likely a laptop) to interface it to Google Earth. This is a 3-part process:
  1. Wire the L20031 GPS receiver to the FTDI serial-USB interface.
  2. Configure the L20031 GPS receiver baud rate and other settings using the MiniGPS 1.4 utility.
  3. Connect the L20031 GPS receiver either in real-time or batch-mode to Google Earth.
This guide is a precursor to a follow-up guide for a GPS Logger using the L20031 receiver, Arduino Uno, and an SD card. But unlike other GPS loggers, this one will not use TinyGPS and SoftwareSerial libraries leaving plenty of Arduino program memory available. I will publish the GPS logger soon after I finish this guide.

Tralha a mais! Espaço a menos!

Kee Klamp Shelving

After moving to a new apartment in a Georgian house, we needed some bigger than normal shelving units to be the right scale for the higher ceilings. I've always loved the old school retro/warehouse look of the Ralph Lauren shops, so after a bit of Googling I found an awesome company who have actually made units for them (http://shop.retro.net/?page_id=579). If I was in the states I would have gladly bought some, but not wanting to ship them over to London it was time to get a pen, a post-it and a cup of coffee....

1/3 do Mundo, Online!

Ora toma!

The Internet: Apparently it’s a Big Deal.
Marcus Roberts

Have you ever heard of that metaphor that seeks to reduce interesting facts about the world’s population into an easily digested format? You know, that one that goes: “if the world was a village with 100 people in it, 52 would be women, 36 would be Chinese or Indian etc etc”.  The last time that I heard it I am positive that it said that: “1 person would own a computer”, which made me feel pretty lucky to be that one person.
However, it seems that that metaphor needs to be updated. According to the latest report by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the UN agency dealing with information and communications technology, one-third of the world’s population has now got access to the internet.  This internet access ranges from Iceland, with 95% of people there having broadband connection, to East Timor, where less than 1% of households have broadband connection.  (When Skynet becomes operational, I’m fleeing to East Timor – it will be safe from our new computer overlords.)  Overall, in the developing world, more than 20% of households have internet access.  This seems to be a very high figure indeed, if I had been asked how many people in the world had access to the internet, I wouldn’t have guessed as much as one-third!

FORM1 by Formlabs

Formlabs is a new company out of MIT lab students interest in 3d printer and proposes a different future for desktop 3D printers… replacing FDM totally for SL technology – which is superior in resolution but the drawback is having to “clean” the finished supporting materials in a chemical tub… a minor step in my opinion but one worth noting never the less.
  • 25 microns
  • uses SL
  • 156 cubic inch build volume (4.9 l x 4.9 w x 6.5 h)
  • unknown weight but guessing about the same as Replicator 2s
  • 2299$US (“pay now” and get it later)
This machine has some big guns attached to it, like SolidWorks founder Jon Hirschtick which is a massive company in the design and engineering field (I use Autodesk) and like MakerBot, lots of smart and creative people behind it. This is a new company so there isn’t much history to go on but this really looks like something that will happen for sure!

E é o quê, a Máquina?
Umas placas, um Aspirador, e plástico moldável à descrição!

Vacuum Forming for Free

Eric Hart

I recently needed 12 fake candlestick phones for a musical ("Crazy For You"). Real candlestick phones are incredibly expensive, and even replicas were too much for my budget. All 12 needed to match as well. I decided to make them all.

I wanted to match the shape of the bases to the real thing, but it would take too long to sculpt 12 bases, and casting them would be too expensive. It looked like it could be vacuum formed. I've worked with plastics in the past, but never with a vacuum former, though I've seen some in action. I couldn't spend a lot of time or money building a vacuum forming machine for this project; I figured if I liked what it was capable of, I would build a nicer one after this project based on what I learned.
After researching what I needed, I found I could build one for free. I already had the necessary components in my shop. I figured many prop makers will already have these parts as well, so I am sharing how I did it.

Flexible, high-strength polymer aerogels deliver "super-insulation" properties

Brian Dodson

Often called "frozen smoke", aerogels are among the amazing materials of our time, with fifteen Guinness Book of World Records entries to their name. However, despite their list of extreme properties, traditional aerogels are brittle, crumbling and fracturing easily enough to keep them out of many practical applications. A new class of mechanically robust polymer aerogels discovered at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Ohio may soon enable engineering applications such as super-insulated clothing, unique filters, refrigerators with thinner walls, and super-insulation for buildings.

SpaceX Grasshopper vertical takeoff and landing vehicle goes for a little hop

By Eric Mack

SpaceX's Falcon rocket has proven that it can fly, and now the private space transport company's Grasshopper is proving that it can hop. The vertical takeoff and landing test vehicle is part of a reusable first stage for Falcon 9 that's being developed by SpaceX to cut down on the cost of missions to space. On Friday, the Grasshopper took its first tiny test flight.
While it's a bit hard to see with all the smoke and debris from the blast in the way, the below video from SpaceX shows the Grasshopper, which consists of a Falcon 9 rocket, a Merlin-1D engine, four steel landing legs, and a steel support structure, taking a 6-foot high hop.
SpaceX says the next goal for the Grasshopper is to be able to hover at roughly 100 feet sometime in the next several months.

Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE seeks healthcare tech innovations
By Ben Coxworth
The smartphones of today are certainly technological wonders. Besides their powerful processors and multitude of available apps, most of them are also equipped with sensors such as cameras, microphones, GPS, accelerometers and gyroscopes. While those sensor-laden phones allow users to perform a broad variety of activities, the folks at Nokia believe that those or similar devices could do much more – particularly when it comes to healthcare. That’s why the company is sponsoring the Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE. The US$2.25 million global competition is intended to “stimulate the development of sensors and sensing technology to drastically improve and expand the quality and access to healthcare across a wide variety of settings for consumers all around the globe.”
 http://www.gizmag.com/nokia-sensing-x-challenge/22879/

http://www.razorlab.co.uk/2012/06/piccolo-pocket-sized-cnc-bot/

Hummm...

Porreiro!

Testimonial: Richie's laser cut home gym!
(Brazil)
Richie has cut more CNC and laser projects than me and his skill is really showing – he’s also a fantastic designer whose projects are in my queue to render and launch on WoodMarvels.com once I get caught-up on the CNC table router end of things. Until then, he sent me some pictures of the Home Gym design I made a while back. Looking sharp!

Hot Glue Gun Extruder for Your CNC Machine or 3D Printer

3D Printing still costs a few dollars and may be out of reach of hobbiest who do not have any budget. The goal of this instructable is to construct an FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printer extruder (a key component) using a $3 Hot Glue Gun. If you don't think you have seen an FDM machine, you probably have. There are many hobby versions out on the market now ... Think Up!, Makerbot, RepRap, Up!, PrintrBot, Solidoodle etc.). The least expensive being around $500 to start. These printers typically use ABS or PLA plastic and push it into a hot extruder much like a hot glue gun.

Custom 3D Printed Carbon Fiber Bike Frame

If you’re really into cycling and are on this site, chances are that over the years you’ve at least toyed with the idea of making your own frame. There’s something truly special and deeply rewarding about riding something that you’ve built yourself, and being able to choose whatever custom geometry and extras that you want only adds to the appeal.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Custom-3D-Printed-Carbon-Fiber-Bike-Frame/

Homemake Wooden GoKart 2.0

Well, after my first and mostly successful wooden gokart, I decided to build a sturdier and better one. I used the same wheels, engine, axles, and seat from the first one. For specific details on mounting the engine, sprocket, and wheels, visit my first gokart.  This is definitely an improvement from the first. For your convenience, I made a 3D Sketchup model. Download it here. The following steps contain pictures from Sketchup. I recommend you use Sketchup to find the exact dimensions.

3-D Printing Hits Rock-Bottom Prices With Homemade Ceramics Mix

ScienceDaily (Mar. 31, 2009) — This story is, literally, stone age meets digital age: University of Washington researchers are combining the ancient art of ceramics and the new technology of 3-D printing. Along the way, they are making 3-D printing dramatically cheaper.
About five years ago, Mark Ganter, a UW mechanical engineering professor and longtime practitioner of 3-D printing, became frustrated with the high cost of commercial materials and began experimenting with his own formulas. He and his students gradually developed a home-brew approach, replacing a proprietary mix with artists' ceramic powder blended with sugar and maltodextrin, a nutritional supplement. The results are printed in a recent issue of Ceramics Monthly. Co-authors are Duane Storti, UW associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Ben Utela, a former UW doctoral student.
"Normally these supplies cost $30 to $50 a pound. Our materials cost less than a dollar a pound," said Ganter. He said he wants to distribute the free recipes in order to democratize 3-D printing and expand the range of printable objects.

Teenage Honduran builds open source eye-tracking computer interface for the disabled

By Loz Blain

This unique and worthwhile project was put together by a 17-year-old electronics and programming whiz from Honduras, of all places. The Eyeboard system is a low-tech eyeball-tracking device that allows users with motor disabilities to enter text into a computer using eye gestures instead of a physical interface. This kind of system is not unique - there's plenty of eye tracking interfaces out there - but Luis Cruz has figured out a way to build the full system into a set of glasses for less than US$300, putting easier communication within reach of users in developing countries. He's also releasing the software as open source to speed up development. Personally, I spent my year as a 17-year-old in a series of heroic failures trying to impress girls with my air guitar.

Evolution of Wooden Designs – 200 pages of laser cut patterns

If you’re a frequent visitor to the Ponoko Showroom, then chances are you’ve already come across the prolific works of Jon Cantin.

Operating under the banner of WoodMarvels, he has produced hundreds of laser cut designs featuring toys, games, vehicles and more.

WoodMarvels 3: Evolution of Wooden Designs is now available in print and download versions.

What sets this latest publication apart is the format in which the 3d designs appear. Each project includes 3d rendered step-by-step assembly instructions, as well as a pattern on a grid layout. By utilising the grid, Jon incorporates the material thickness – thus giving users a reference point at which they can scale the designs to suit whatever material they wish to work with.

Welcome to the Vintage Projects Collection on a New Server!

Our goal is to preserve the inspired DIY spirit of the past. Our free project reprints cover farm machines, the woodshop, machine shop, boats, archery and more. These vintage plans come from a half-century ago when do-it-yourself enthusiasts turned wood, metal and old motors into useful workhorses, functional tools, and toys.

02 Pursuit motorcycle runs on compressed air

By Noel McKeegan

A vehicle that runs on air. It sounds like a fantastic idea, but energy is still needed to compress the air and the losses that go hand-in-hand with converting energy still have to be taken into account, just as in fossil fuel-based propulsion systems. Pros and cons aside, we still haven't seen air powered transport make an impact in the race to find economic, environmentally-friendly ways to get from A to B. Industrial Design student Dean Benstead thinks that compressed air does have a role to play in the future transport mix, and he's designed a working air-powered motorcycle prototype with a view to exploring the viability of the platform.
