When I went to high school, it was a time when shop classes still existed and you could learn some skills essential for your future maker self. It was the worst of times. It was the best of times...I think one of the most important skills to be gotten out of that was learning how to draw and read technical drawings, things like architect plans, blueprints, parts specifications. If you delved further in engineering, that same precision and attention to detail is carried out in things like exploded diagrams, flowcharts and circuit schematics. Being able to do this by hand involves creative thinking and it is what I feel that is missing when you toss someone a CAD (computer aided design) package to do the same task. Sure, CAD is a useful tool but I feel if you do not know the basics of the process behind it you miss the point of being able to design with your own imagination.

DropLit: the low-cost DIY Resin Printer

Today at Maker Faire Detroit, the team from SeeMeCNC unveiled a new printer: DropLit. Resin printers do not extrude material. Rather, these printers use a resin bath –such as MakerJuice Labs– which is selectively cured by light from a DLP projector.
Traditionally, resin printers are not sold as kits and command prices starting around $2,000 and up. When they said this, they were probably referring to the B9 Creator, which is in that price range. John Oly and his team plan to keep the DropLit kit sub $600, but to do this they are excluding the costly DLP projector necessary for a fully functional resin printer from the kit. This same idea of leaving out the projector has been seen in a couple other DLP resin printer kits, such as the Sedgewick. The DropLit has a distinct advantage that it isn’t crowdfunded and comes from a group that is already selling and supporting impressive printers.

Para que os vossos Desenhos Vectoriais em formato SVG, da Inkscape, sejam legíveis e se carreguem para Sites como a Ponoko, sem problema, experimentem este Programa bacano, pela minha experiência pessoal, transformou um Ficheiro SVG de 900 Kbites, cheio de problemas, num de 500 Kbites, que carregou num instante:



Introducing SVG Cleaner 

If you do a lot of drawing in Inkscape, you know that unused elements tend to accumulate and blow up size of SVG documents. This is where recently released SVG Cleaner 0.2 comes to rescue.
Basically the application does two things:
  • removing elements and attributes that don't contribute to the final rendering;
  • making those elements and attributes that are actually used more compact.
While Inkscape's Vacuum Defs command only cleans up unused gradients and suchlike, and Scour-based exporter provides some additional options, SVG Cleaner provides far, far more options and works in batch mode.
Besides, you still need cleaning up files from Adobe Illustrator and Corel DRAW (Inkscape can do it for the former, btw).

DIY Glow 3D Printer

If you  read my interests, you probably know that I love studying the 3D printer we have at school to see how it works. If anyone wants to know more about 3d printing, there is a really cool article here. Anyway,  I spent about a month (as an engineering student I know how important research is) sketching designs and building prototypes. After that I finally found a design that fit my needs. This printer is based on the brain of a mindstorm NXT because it is easy to program and my arduino chip is burnt out and I'm still trying to save up to buy a new one. This printer only prints as accurately as you program it, but I will show you the best method of programming. The design includes x-axis and  y-axis movement as well as z-axis movement used to pump down the printing material.
Time to make: about 4 hours if you have all of the pieces in front of you

Suction Cup Tape
Uses tiny micro suction cups instead of adhesive 
Have you ever needed to adhere something to a surface without using a sticky adhesive? This tape bonds to smooth, flat, clean surfaces just like a suction cup. The surface of the tape has thousands of microscopic craters that work by creating many partial vacuums between the tape and the target surface. The tape is not pressure sensitive, can rebond repeatedly, and leaves no residue on the target surface. To remove, you simply pull the tape off or twist it to break the bond. Wiping the tape with wet tissue or cleaning with old-fashioned pressure-sensitive tape will remove debris from the craters and rejuvenate its suction properties. Once in place, a 4 in x 1 in piece of the tape is strong enough to hold a 1 lb flat piece of steel.

This idea came to me after reading a forum discussion here at Instructables regarding whether or not women carry pocket knives or scissors.  I was wondering if perhaps it was because pocket knives and multi-tools tend to look too manly.  They are often  too bulky to carry in one's pocket and not something you'd want in your purse.

When coming up with an idea for a multi-tool that women might want, I came up with the following criteria.

It needed to be:
  • Small -can fit into pocket or purse
  • Discrete, not obtrusive,
  • Looked nice
  • Functional
  • Had an assortment of tools
  • Can be made with my skill level
  • Can be created with the tools that I had available.
Here is what I came up with: a multi-tool disguised as a tube of lipstick.  In this instructable I will show you how I made it.

Isto, já tem Pinta de coisa a sério!
Notícia do Blog da Ponoko, um Makerbot que vem já montado, mais do dobro da definição do anterior, o resto, sinceramente, vai à lixa, e da mais fina, imprime vários objectos ao mesmo tempo, e maior volume de Impressão, fazem deste Makerbot uma opção viável.
É como quando o Linux deixou de ser uma brincadeira para Nardos dos mais Devotos, e passaram-se a vender Computadores Pessoais feitos de raiz para o Ubuntu.
Olhem pró gajo, todo lampeiro, a falar da Máquina, ok, eles merecem estar orgulhosos...




MakerBot launches Replicator 2 3D printer 

The new professional-grade 3D printer from MakerBot.

The people who brought us the Cupcake, the Thing-o-Matic, and the Replicator 3D printer have just released their next creation: the Replicator 2.
In contrast to their earlier printers aimed at hobbyists, MakerBot is describing this new printer as “professional-grade.” This claim is supported by the radically improved print quality, in addition to a slew of other upgrades and tweaks. To compare, the original replicator had a layer height of 270 microns, and the Replicator 2 has a layer height of 100 microns.

Spanish start-up Aisoy Robotics is marketing a new robot that, while it may look similar to the famous Furby, is actually a fully programmable research and development platform.
The Aisoy1 II robot comes with a variety of sensors (touch, light, position, temperature, and camera), microphone and speaker, RGB LEDs in its body, and a 70 mini-LED matrix display (for animated lips). It can't move around independently without additional modifications, but four servos control the robot's neck rotation, eyelids, and eyebrows.

This all started when I learned that my friend Raouf Sarwari, who has his shop down the hall from me, has a laser cutter. Brooklyn is great for cross-pollinating ideas and skills with each other. Anyhow I have always liked models and thought it would be fun to build a wood wood shop. I spoke to Raouf and he agreed and we worked together to make one for the Crest Hardware Show.
It is an annual art show that takes place in the midst of a running hardware store. The only requirement is that the art must be hardware related. This then is our how to make a mini band saw. Since then we saw that there was a laser contest and thought we should enter it.
Since working with the laser I cannot stop thinking of ways to use it, jigs, toys, tools the list keeps growing.

Uma carrada de notícias!

The Halbach 12 magnet Array, 10 mm Cubes, Laser Cut Version!
1 - Put the Arrow piece, the one with the Magnet Axis Directions, on the bottom.
2 - Put the first Square piece, the other pieces, with the square holes, aligned and on top of that. Glue the two, on the outside.
3 - Using 4 Magnets as place holders, stack the other 3 Pieces, and glue the lot on the outside.
4 - After finding the North of each Magnet (a Compass South poit points to it) mark it with a Permantent Ink Felt Marker.
5 - Put the Magnets carefully, the arrows point to the North, put them, first 4 spaced 3 places apart, glue the top, then 4 to the right of those, glue again, then the remaining 4 glue again.
That's it! :)

A look at a simple yet highly versatile multi-purpose USB tool, and an insight into the experience of creating an open source hardware project.
The Little Wire hardware comprises of only a handful of components, but don't let that fool you as it can be put to many different uses including USB GPIO, ADC and SPI/I2C/UART interface.
In the great open source tradition Little Wire builds upon the work of others, and in particular the USBtiny software implementation of low-speed USB for Atmel ATtiny microcontrollers, Limor Fried's USBtinyISP hardware, and a V-USB ATtiny in-system programmer
Little Wire is an open source hardware design and the schematic, bill of materials and PCB layout are hosted at SolderPad, with open source software provided at GitHub.
It would be easy enough to construct Little Wire using perfboard, you could make your own PCB from the supplied layout and Seeedstudio also provide complete kits.
