DIY Ultraviolet Sterilization Device (UVClean)

henrydmayne

Introduction

Hi all and welcome to my very first instructable! In this step by step guide, you will learn how to create your very own ultraviolet sterilization device that can be used as either a wand, or as an automatic sterilization chamber. The device, called the UVClean, uses a special UVC bulb that can sterilize nonporous surfaces in a matter of minutes.

Features include:

-Sturdy and ergonomic design

-Genuine 253.7nm 3.5W UVC bulb

-Bi-color OLED display

-Passcode protected interface

-Comprehensive menu system

-Continuous handheld mode, and automatic timer mod

 2) This device is in fact a sanitizer, not a sterilizer. Sanitizing is the process of removing most organisms from a surface 99.9%, while sterilizing is the process of removing ALL organisms from a surface. This device is not medical grade, and it should not be perceived as such.

How to Make Arduino Smartwatch With Custom PCB

 Aarav G

Tinkercad Projects »
Hi all, in this instructable you will see how a smartwatch can be made using an Arduino board and a few other components. We are going to design and get a custom PCB fabricated which will be the motherboard of our watch housing the main circuit and the brain of the watch ATmega 328P which we will salvage from an Arduino Nano board.

I have chosen the Arduino Nano and not the more commonly used Arduino UNO because the Nano features a Surface Mount chip so it's much more compact and in this project, space is key because we need to fit all the components in the least space possible.

I am going to use a 160 mAh Li-Po (Lithium Polymer) battery which will easily be able to power the watch on regular use for at least a week which is quite good enough. We will use a USB battery charging module for charging the battery. This will also have a USB port in it to charge the battery!

I have designed the body of the watch in a 3d design software and you can easily get it 3d-printed anywhere. This was we can keep the watch completely personalised according to your need. The watch will be activated by using a push-button present at the side of the watch.

The watch will have Bluetooth functionality and will be connected to an app that can be used to track data. It can count the steps, distance and the calories burnt using an accelerometer module. With the same components and in some iterations in the code and the app, we can also easily track messages and calls received on the phone through the smartwatch! The watch will also have a heartrate measuring sensor in it which will be able to measure your pulse and I have tried it out. It's pretty accurate!

DIY Desktop 5-axis CNC Mill

i_nerantzis

OK, you bought your router and you are happy with it. If you are an artist.

But... if you are an engineer... you probably are not so happy.

You cut some 2D stuff. Then try some 2.5D and start getting excited. And then, there comes a day when you start wondering... What if I can make something more out of my 3-axis router?

Then it comes to your mind that you can always convert one of the axis from linear to rotary! Yes this is it! You start doing it... you succeed, but deep down inside you know it.

You have to go all the way to the end and do it properly. You need to make the conversion to a full 5-axis machine to be satisfied! If you feel like it, then follow my lead.

Getting set up for working from home as an electronics engineer.

Andrew Back

There are often times when it would be convenient to work from home, such as when we need to be physically present for some reason or given the current situation, when remote working might help limit the spread of coronavirus. Not to mention that it’s also handy having a setup to work on spare time projects and the inevitable, “I wondered if you could fix this?” jobs.

This post takes a look at getting a home workspace set up with the typically essential tools and equipment for working on electronics. Of course, what may be required in practice is going to vary depending upon the precise nature of the work and replicating a production line or advanced laboratory capabilities, for example, may prove a little more challenging.

DIY Nintendo!

Nintendo Labo Lets You Build DIY Cardboard Creations
Anatol Locker

Nintendo has always been good for surprises. Today, they are presenting “Nintendo Labo”, a gaming system that combines the fun of making things with playing video games.
”Nintendo Labo” will be a series of DIY kits you made mostly from cardboard. In the box, you’ll find preconfigured cardboard sheets, strings, rubber bands, stickers and a digital assembly guide. Your goal is to piece together the creations first and then bring them to life via the Nintendo Joy-cons.
They are crucial to Nintendo Labo: The interplay between the toys and the game console can only be done due to the Joy-Cons. The controllers are mounted to the cardboard projects; they pick up movement by their sensors and send the data to the console.

Flip-Top CNC Table
JON-A-TRON

Space is expensive, space saving is not. With this table in my garage, I have a 30 square foot work table and on the under side, a 33" X 33" Shapoko XXL CNC machine when I need it.
The CNC machine is screwed to the underside of the table top, which is attached to two side shelves with shafts and bearings. Four set screws keep the table rigid when it's in either position.

Laminated 3D Printer (from Laser Cut Parts Only)
Core3D

When I wanted to build my own first printer, I of course went with the Prusa I3 design. I joined a Makerspace so I could print the components to make it.
Turns out, Makerspace 3D printers are fickle and down an awful lot. So instead of printing a 3D printer I decided to Laser cut my first printer. In effect I’m using the laminate printer method to create an FDM printer.
The embedded video will give you an impression of what components are made up of.
You can download the entire model at: https://grabcad.com/library/laminated-prusa-i3-printer-1
All components can be laser cut using 12x28 inch Acrylic sheet (3mm thick).
In this instructable I will not go into the wiring of the Ramp 1.4 setup but instead focus on Printer frame and mechanics.

Tube Bender
lecgo

I would have liked it to make a new seat for my recumbent bicycle and for it was necessary some aluminium tubes and to bend those on proper shape. In our town I have not found a place to bend some tubes and I have decided to make my own tube bender for this work.

É preciso ter Lata!
Literalmente.

Tin Can Hole Saw
ShakeTheFuture

I needed a large hole saw for one of my projects. I already had a smaller hole saw, therefore I did not want to buy another one....?
You see, a hole saw is not something I use very often. Last time I bought a hole saw for around 10 - 15 USD only to used it once or twice.
I did not want to spend another 15 USD for a tool that will not be used.
In this Instructable, I demonstrate a way to make a hole saw out of a tin can.
It can cut plastic, acrylic and drywall.

Bondic.
Com C, no fim;

About
Bondic® - The World’s First Liquid Plastic Welder.
How many times has glue let us down? Fingers stuck together, broken toys that we just can’t fix, having to throw out our stuff because gluing it only made it worse. Not to mention just when we need glue most we discover our 3-month-old bottle is as dry as the Sahara Desert on a hot day.
Bondic® is the only product that works where glue fails. It’s liquid plastic that only hardens when you need it to. YES it stays liquid and won’t dry out like those crazy glues on the market today. Bondic® is a very simple 4-step process (clean, fill, cure and shape) to fix almost anything, saving countless precious items from ending up in the trash before their time.
Never again will we be at the mercy of sticky, messy and exasperating adhesives that do anything BUT what we need them to do. We live in a plastic and disposable world today, so much so that Ken and Barbie almost look human in comparison. Our mission is to save expensive items and hard earned money by not having to replace them every year or even every month! Oh and while we’re at it, contribute to shrinking a landfill or two.

Protopiper: Physically Sketching Room-Sized Objects at Actual Scale

Harshit Agrawal, Udayan Umapathi, Robert Kovacs, Frohnhofen Johannes, Hsiang-Ting Chen, Stefanie Mueller, Patrick Baudisch

Protopiper is a computer aided, hand-held fabrication device that allows users to sketch room-sized objects at actual scale. The key idea behind protopiper is that it forms adhesive tape into tubes as its main building material, rather than extruded plastic or photopolymer lines. Since the resulting tubes are hollow they offer excellent strength-to-weight ratio, thus scale well to large structures.

Transforming Workbench & Storage
polyglot45
My girlfriend is an artist and has been infinitely patient with the fact that our previous living situations have prevented her from having a nice and functional studio space at home. We bought a house earlier this year which meant that we were no longer living under the constraints of a tenant-landlord-no-major-alterations relationship and we were free to do as we liked. She was away for about a month this summer, during which time I overhauled the room we had designated as her studio space. Though she knew it was happening and had given me some parameters, I was allowed considerable creative license in the renovation. Buuuut, old habits die hard and I tackled the redesign with the knowledge that we will likely move SOMEday and maybe a home studio might not be a selling point for future buyers and maybe she'd like it so much she would like to take it with us. So I set about to create something big and amazing yet still portable. (In all honesty, this project will leave considerably fewer holes in the walls than most other shelves I've installed in apartments....so have no fear!)

Acrylic Cheat Sheet: How to Cut, Glue, Bend, and More

Jordan Bunker
Acrylic is a wonderful plastic that can be used for all sorts of different projects. It comes in both transparent and colored options, and can be machined, laser cut, or heated and bent into almost any shape.

Cast an Aluminum Slingshot!
PopsicleGhoul

This Instructable will teach you how to cast an aluminum slingshot capable of great power and suprising accuracy. The actual casting method used is "lost foam casting", in which foam is carved into the final design and buried in sand. Metal is poured into the foam, vaporising it and filling the mold cavity to make the final object. The basic slingshot design is Joerg Sprave's Rambone slingshot, although I did not use any templates in the creation of this slingshot.

I decided to do this one day when I had seen a video on making a lost foam aluminum slingshot. I had tried greensand casting (http://www.instructables.com/id/Cast-an-Aluminum-B...) and lost wax casting (http://www.instructables.com/id/Cast-a-Metal-Ring/), so I decided that I should try this last common method of casting in order to more fully master the subject. I also got hooked on slingshots after seeing Joerg Sprave's videos on YouTube.
Enough talking, let's get slingshotting (yes, that is an actual word)!

Bending PMMA (plexiglass)

katrijn_haezebrouck

We are a group of 3 students of the second year Industrial Design (Kortrijk, Belgium).
We got an assignment for building a machine with which we could bend PMMA, also known as plexiglass.

We chose to experiment with the concept of using several tubes, through which the plexiglass is led for bending.
We did a lot of research to invent and construct a good machine, using a principle that does not yet exist in this application.

Good luck to everyone who wants to rebuilt our machine himself!

Review: Estes Proto X nano quadcopter

Jonathan Fincher

You may have noticed that we enjoy our quadcopters here at Gizmag, from the GPS-equipped Phantom 2 Vision to the palm-sized 1SQ V-cam. Recently though, we had a chance to try out a somewhat unusual style of quad in the form of the tiny Proto X from Estes. It may not have a laundry list of features under its belt, but the Proto X does hold the distinction of being the smallest quadcopter we've ever reviewed ... by a huge margin.

Acrylic Bender

This weekend I decided to make an acrylic bender. I got the idea from a video on the internet.

Construction:

I bought a cheap hairdryer ($18) and removed the filament. I made the following measurements with a multimeter across the mains lead:

Fan
0 1 2
 0 inf115 95.5
 Heater 1 inf 70.6 52.3
 2 inf 61.6 42.9

All in all, I was impressed by the design of the hairdryer. The heater seemed to run in series with the motor, there was what looked like a bi-metallic thermostat that would cut out if the outlet was blocked, and there was a non-resettable thermal fuse as a last resort. It seems like that it would be quite difficult to start a fire or do damage with this.
The construction consisted of having the heater elements inside U-channel aluminium. To either side I screwed a wooden board to make a flat work surface.
I cut a piece of aluminium U-channel to length, then used hot-glue and scraps of wood to seal the ends up. Mixing some plaster (50g plaster, 35g water) and pouring it into the trough made a nice heat resistant, electrically insulating base to run the wires on.

DIWire desktop machine bends wire into 3D sculptures

Jonathan Fincher

Over a year ago, Pensa Labs caught our attention with its impressive DIWire Bender, a small machine that bends thick wires into elaborate 3D shapes by following simple vector drawings. Since then, the company has been refining the wooden prototype we saw before into a sleek fabrication device that's fit for consumers. The result is a more compact, easier-to-use DIWire that can turn pieces of wire into creative 3D sculptures while sitting comfortably on a desktop.

Exploring mbed with the Application Board

Andrew Back

A first look at the mbed platform and the recently launched Application Board.
I'm embarrassed to admit that the mbed platform has remained on my must-properly-investigate list for quite a long time. In fact, from since just before mbed's Chris Styles presented at an OSHUG meeting back in September 2010, and for whatever reason — most likely a pre-occupation with numerous other things of a technical nature — I haven't get round to taking a closer look until now.
What follows is by no means a thorough exploration of all the features that the mbed platform provides — that would require a much longer post — but rather instead a look at the out-of-box experience with an mbed module and the brand new Application Board.
It's safe to say that this won't be the last post on the topic!

The ServoCam is a web-enabled, servo controlled, digital camera. The miniature servos allow the camera to pan and tilt. The camera itself includes JPEG image compression and a UART interface. The hardware and example software developed for this project provides a platform which can be easily further refined into any number of applications.

New Invention Could Help Reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sarah Terzo

Sudden infant death syndrome, also known as crib death, is responsible for the deaths of 7000 infants a year. Now a new invention has been made that might drastically reduce this number.

Researchers at The Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin have developed a circuit board made of polyurethane which can be put inside baby’s clothes and monitor the breathing of the infant.  If the child stops breathing, the device alerts parents, who can then render first aid and save the baby before it is too late.

State-of-the-art rocket-powered motorcycle sells on eBay

Brian Dodson

A state-of-the-art rocket-powered motorcycle that was recently advertised for sale on eBay has been sold to Gerd Habermann Racing. Engineered to hit speeds in excess of 400 mph (640 km/h) during the quarter-mile, the bike was designed and built by Glenn Brittian, one of the few drivers licensed by the National Hot Rod Association to drive a rocket dragster. The asking price was US$27,000, but the actual selling price has not been made public.

X-ray device traps airborne pathogens and neutralizes them

Ben Coxworth

Help may be on the way for people with compromised immune systems, severe allergies, or who otherwise have to be wary of airborne nasties. A team of scientists have created something known as a soft x-ray electrostatic precipitator, or an SXC ESP for short. It filters all manner of bacteria, allergens, viruses, and ultrafine particles from the air – plus, it kills everything it catches.
Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) already exist, and work by applying an electrical charge to airborne particles, which are subsequently drawn to an oppositely-charged metallic collection plate. According to the researchers, however, ESPs aren’t very efficient at trapping smaller particles – specifically in the submicrometer and nanometer size range.
