Lathe system PD 400/CNC

CNC control of Z-axis and X-axis enables precise turning, facing and longitudinal turning of steel and non-ferrous metal.

Axes drive with powerful step motors and recirculating ball spindles (no backlash). For facing and longitudinal turning, for turning balls, radii and any freely formed contours made of steel and non-ferrous metal. Work piece machining is effected automatically by software and can be reproduced as often as required.

A Closer Look at Parallella
Andrew Back
As Parallella prototypes start to ship this post takes a look in more detail at what this potentially game changing single board computer provides and a few potential applications.
The Parallella project is the brainchild of Adapteva, a semiconductor company that has developed an incredibly energy-efficient microprocessor architecture named Epiphany that is capable of scaling to thousands of cores on a single chip.
The Epiphany chip is currently sampling in 16 and 64 core versions and provides floating-point RISC processors that can be clocked at up to 1GHz, each complete with a small amount of local memory and meshed together by a low-latency on-chip network.

Timbrel Vaulting Using Cardboard Formwork

Lara Davis, Matthias Rippman and Philippe Block from the Swiss BLOCK Research Group at the ETH Zurich University have taken the centuries old timbrel vaulting technique one step further by incorporating high-tech design tools (software and CNC fabrication) and low-tech materials (cardboard boxes and wooden palettes).

The CarveWright
is Easy-to-Use With the simple to use drag-and-drop software, and the automated setup of the CarveWright machine, you can easily create spectacular projects in no time. Have more fun with less learing time. Plus, we have extensive tutorials and TIps & Tricks articles to show you how to keep doing more.

Walkbot exoskeleton rehabilitates stroke survivors

Jason Falconer

After suffering a stroke or spinal cord injury, a patient regaining their ability to walk typically requires three to five physical therapists supporting them while physically moving their limbs. This is not only physically exhausting, but leaves therapists at risk of personal injury. Now, the leading health care facilities in Korea have adopted a rehab robot that only requires one therapist – the Walkbot combines an adjustable lower-body robotic exoskeleton that moves a patient's legs in time with a treadmill.

How to make Machinable Wax at home!
rawkstar320
Featured on Hackaday.com!  Woohoo!  But for records sake, my name is Jake: http://hackaday.com/2012/12/29/make-your-own-machinable-wax
A major issue that I ran into when I first started working with my new CNC machine was the cost of raw materials to machine. Sure, a block of plastic is not terribly expensive by itself – but figure in the cost after you mess something up and the cost becomes quite unreasonable. For this reason, I began looking into machinable wax.

Machinable wax is a very hard wax that won’t gum up a cutting tool, is soft enough to machine quickly and most importantly is completely reusable! Since I am cheap, I decided to make my own, which is actually quite simple and could be considered environmentally friendly since we use recycled plastic bags. Be aware that this Instructable is DANGEROUS! We will be melting wax around 300* and this wax will be thick and sticky so it will literally burn your skin off faster than you can say “OUCH!”

Portable native MOD player based on Raspberry PI (plays MOD,S3M,IT,XM etc...). Uses BassPlay library.
Mr.Holub
Description:

Raspberry-PI based native MOD player to play music modules MOD,S3M,IT,XM among others.
It uses command-line player based on bass-play libraries.

Short description of music modules:

Music modules originates from Amiga computers, later were transferred to another platforms.
The main principe is the file containing sound samples and patterns containing information of when and how particular sound should be played.
As there are players for Windows, Linux and other platforms nowadays, portable players can play just mp3 files which was my motivation to construct this player.

Double Mirror Right Angle Drilling Guide
kentdvm
Drilling a straight hole can be difficult because you can only see one side of the bit at a time.  Without a lot of practice, many of the holes end up perpendicular in one plane and not so perpendicular in the other.  Drilling with a conventional guide (2 blocks at 90°) works in some applications, but when using short bits there's not enough room.  This is quick, cheap & easy drilling guide will help you bore accurate holes even with small bits.  Using two small mirrors, it works similar to a dressing room mirror to help you view the bit from all angles.  When all the bits are parallel, start drilling.  It's that easy.

Working Night-vision Periscope. (Steampunked)
longwinters
This is a project I made while on Holiday for Christmas, it took about 20 hours and was cheep if you can find the supplies at a second hand store.
It is fully functional and works with infra-red quite well, the iris lens cover was a left over from a pair of goggles that were never finished their construction is much the same as found in my steampunk goggle instructable.

Scientists copy structure of cork to produce 3D blocks of graphene
Ben Coxworth

Imagine how limiting it would be if steel, wood or plastic only existed in the form of thin sheets. Well, that’s been the case so far when it comes to graphene. While its incredible strength and high conductivity make it very useful in things like semiconductors, batteries and solar cells, there’s no doubt that it would be even more useful if it could be produced in three-dimensional blocks. Scientists at Australia’s Monash University have now managed to do just that – by copying the structure of cork.
Graphene itself takes the form of a one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms linked in a hexagonal pattern. According to lead researcher Prof. Dan Li, 3D structures assembled from those one-dimensional sheets have tended to be brittle. Cork, on the other hand, is a three-dimensional material that’s known for both its strength and elasticity. Li’s team observed that while the fibers in cork cell walls are closely-packed for maximum strength, the individual cells are linked in a honeycomb structure, which allows the material to stretch and contract.

Escape Belt releases your seat belt when your car fills with water

Ben Coxworth

For most of us, chances are that we will never be in a car that plunges into the water. However, if you consider yourself “at risk” for that sort of eventuality – say, if you’re a rally driver or Jason Bourne – you might be interested in the Escape Belt. It automatically releases your seat belt when exposed to water.

Codeable Objects

Codeable Objects is a library for Processing that enables novice coders, designers and artists to rapidly design, customize and construct artifacts using geometric computation and digital fabrication. The programming methods provided by the library allow the user to program a variety of structures and designs with simple code and geometry. When the user compiles their code, the software outputs tool paths based on their specifications, which can be used in conjunction with digital fabrication tools to build their object.
The first case study for the Codeable Objects library was conducted with a set of methods that facilitated the creation of a laser cut lamp. To test the library, I held a workshop at the MIT Media Lab. Over the course of a day, participants used the library to design, and construct lamps of their own.  All of the lamps displayed in the images were created by people in the workshop.

Let's cook: 3D scanner based on Arduino and Processing
cube000

Ever wonder of copypaste method, usable in real life, not only in virtual reality? Me too. It is  21th century, and those are nearer than most of all can imagine! This is possible thank to 3d scanners and printers. So let's try to scan something!

E numa Figurina absolutamente... Re-vigorante!

3D Printing Reinvigorating Wood Sculpture

We get to see a lot of amazing uses for 3D printing here at Shapeways, but this technique is new to me! Ben Godi from Italian company 3D Wood shares a really interesting technique that combines 3D printing and traditional wood turning.

In his words...

Hi I'm Ben and I would like to share a production process I have developed this year, together with a local wood carving company 3D Wood. We already use this production pipeline daily now, because it has so many advantages and Shapeways plays a major role! (how could it be otherwise!) I'm going to explain the steps with the help of two models that are for sale on my website.

Mini CNC case study
Albanetc

This is what I made tonight. This is just a wheel. I wanted to test how it would come out before cutting the inertial damper wheels for steppers. It took about 10 minutes to cut, using tungsten carbide bit, speed setting 2, pass depth of 0.02" and feedrate of 12 IPM. I got these parameters from earlier mini router experiments/tests.

Installing snowblower on Kubota BX tractor
nlinventor

Fist snow of the year  this morning and more is forecast for tomorrow so I got the snowblower on just in time. This rear mounted Kubota snowblower does a good job clearing snow but getting it installed is always a bit of a challenge, especially as it's something done just once a year so you don't get much opportunity to develop smooth installation techniques.

I stored the snowblower and 3-point hitch parts under a tarp all summer, but even with that, a lot of oil and grease evaporated and some rust set in.  I live in a damp climate so that doesn't help any.

The photo above shows the snowblower fully installed, adjusted and lubricated.

Sliding Dog Gate Protects Door from Scratches
KentM

Anyone with a dog knows that if you let them out to do their business you better be waiting by the door when they want to come back in. If you're not, it's a sure bet that they will be scratching at the door trying to get your attention and, the bigger the dog, the greater the damage. This instructable is a classic example of my "closing the barn door after the horse got out" but, hopefully, it will save your door before it meets the same fate as mine.
