CNC Router Rotary Axis

My router was a 3-axis machine. Adding a 4th rotary axis allows considerably more flexibility as the part to be machined can be rotated to expose different faces for cutting. I'd previously done some 4-axis router work at Stamps School of Art & Design - here's that post. I really wanted to add this capability to my router.
After exploring a few options - most of which were very expensive - I chose to go with an inexpensive kit from China. It was only $358 including shipping. I'd have to figure out how to get it hooked in to the electronics then build my own mount.

3D printers are cool and they finally start to drop in price. Kickstarter campaigns like the one from QB-UP or M3D are popping up and they are finally "affordable". And with affordable I mean affordable like 200 $ and not "affordable" like 2.199$ affordable. However, once you are a proud owner of a 3D printer you will soon realize that your wallet is far from being let alone. No ! You need plastic filament of course to print those super awesome coat hooks and wheel chocks. Since the price for these filaments tend to top the actual material costs, printing before mentioned life savers is kind of expensive and could become a problem to the development of the ever growing 3D printer community
BUT FEAR NO MORE !! Some clever gents came along - Hugh Lyman with his Lyman Extruder may be mentioned here or the guys over at Filastruder.com - and saved the day ! YAY. And there was much rejoicing ! They have built plastic extruders everyone can build or buy at a decent price. However if you are a fellow Instructable.com user the first thing that should come to your mind is "I can build this by myself...and cheaper...". Building at lower costs is the nature of DIY after all.

KinderLab Robotics emerged from a need to make widely available Marina Umaschi Bers' research on new technologies for young children at Tufts University.

Marina grew frustrated when presenting her work at conferences and always being asked: "How can I get a robotic kit?" and not having a good answer.

During a walk in Walden Pond, near Boston, her friend Mitch Rosenberg, veteran executive at several robotics start-ups, decided to join forces to fullfill an old-dream of his: improving STEM education.

I always loved CNC machines! They are the future since they were first invented! I still believe that CADing and CNCing are miracles. When the first printer arrived to my home (I was about 10) I got really fascinated by the fact that I could print a paper about a hundred times by writing it just once!
Only recently I got comfortable with the parts and knowledge needed to built a CNC. I really needed a kind of plotter for my work. As you know a Commercial Laser Engraver is really pricey and a good one is simply out of reach...
To make a long story short I decided to build my own... The funny part is that when I started designing I didn't know Instructables so I reinvented the wheel in many cases...

New materials developed that are as light as aerogel, yet 10,000 times stronger

Imagine materials strong enough to use in building airplanes or motor cars, yet are literally lighter than air. Soon, that may not be so hard to do because a team of researchers from MIT and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed new ultra-lightweight materials that are as light as aerogel, but 10,000 times stiffer, and may one day revolutionize aerospace and automotive designs.
Aerogels are incredibly light, so light that the record holder, aerographene, boasts a density of just 0.16 mg/cm3. Currently, aerogels are used for insulation, tennis racquets, as a means of controlling oil spills, and were used on the NASA Stardust mission to collect samples from a comet’s tail. Unfortunately, despite its seemingly ephemeral nature, its very much a solid and will shatter if pressed hard enough, so its use is limited.

Any cast starts with a mold. You need something to pour your material into, be it concrete, plaster, resin, wax, whatever. You can user everyday objects like bowls, packaging or make molds from existing objects.
But what if you want cast something completely different? Something you can't make casts of?
Paper to the rescue. Everyone has some lying around, has scissors and glue. And paper can take pretty much any form you want.
It does have it's limitations though. It's not waterproof and will lose it's strength when getting wet. So before you can use it as a mold, you'll have to make it waterproof. I'll just use spraypaint. Also it's strength is limited. So making huge casts doesn't work. The "Venus de Milo" is 36cm (14 inch) high - and it worked out just fine.
Paper is great to work with, it's easy to cut, fold and glue. But if you want to make more than one cast of your mold you might want to try sheets of plastic. While it is a lot harder to work with it is reusable. You can make many casts with the same mold over and over.

Ciclóides, peças avulsas, Grafenos-esponja,

Uma pequena maravilha mais do Rob Ives, esta engrenagem se Ciclóide, vão ao Link, para verem o seu Vídeo meio hipnótico:



The hypocycloid mechanism is used to make a compact, simple gear box that reduces rotational speed. In the case of this animation the reduction is 7:1. Follow one of the lobes of the six pointed rotor with your eye and see how it advances one notch anticlockwise for each rotation of the blue rotor. By adding two similar mechanisms back to back it is possible to multiply up the the gear reduction ratio











Já acende a Luz!


Já podem ver no Youtube a minha Ray-Gun com o Laser e Lanterna, um clique rápido, é só Laser, para apontar, um clique mais prolongado, e acende a Lanterna, para procurarem os vosso papéis, na demonstração que façam...


...E a Luz dá um efeito dramático do caraças! :) 

Mas o que é importante, é salientar, que tive de fazer uma peça em três partes, cortada na boa da Serra Pendular, para segurar as Pilhas, e é claro, o Laser e os Leds, na Placa minúscula que tamvbém tem os 2 interruptores:



Não esquecendo a peça, em Acrílico Branco, à esquerda, na parte do meio, que acciona os interruptores, empurrada pelo Gatilho:


 


Talvez inclua estas 3 peças no Desenho que vendo na Net, mas como não sei o que vão pôr na Ray-gun, vai ser muito modificado, este acessório, por cada um... 










E continuando a Corrida, entre o Aerogel, a Aerografite, e os Grafenos, pelo Material mais Leve, eis este Grafeno que é uma Esponja, de tal maneira, que absorverá, no Futuro, Derrames de Óleo, e podendo ser re-utilizado!

Graphene aerogel takes world’s lightest material crown

Not even a year after it claimed the title of the world’s lightest material, aerographite has been knocked off its crown by a new aerogel made from graphene. Created by a research team from China’s Zhejiang University in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering lab headed by Professor Gao Chao, the ultra-light aerogel has a density lower than that of helium and just twice that of hydrogen.
Although first created in 1931 by American scientist and chemical engineer, Samuel Stephens Kistler, aerogels have recently become a hotly contested area of scientific research. A “multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNT) aerogel” dubbed “frozen smoke” with a density of 4 mg/cm3 lost its world’s lightest material title in 2011 to a micro-lattice material with a density of 0.9 mg/cm3. Less than a year later, aerographite claimed the crown with its density of 0.18 mg/cm3.

Have you ever heard of that metaphor that seeks to reduce interesting facts about the world’s population into an easily digested format? You know, that one that goes: “if the world was a village with 100 people in it, 52 would be women, 36 would be Chinese or Indian etc etc”.  The last time that I heard it I am positive that it said that: “1 person would own a computer”, which made me feel pretty lucky to be that one person.
However, it seems that that metaphor needs to be updated. According to the latest report by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the UN agency dealing with information and communications technology, one-third of the world’s population has now got access to the internet.  This internet access ranges from Iceland, with 95% of people there having broadband connection, to East Timor, where less than 1% of households have broadband connection.  (When Skynet becomes operational, I’m fleeing to East Timor – it will be safe from our new computer overlords.)  Overall, in the developing world, more than 20% of households have internet access.  This seems to be a very high figure indeed, if I had been asked how many people in the world had access to the internet, I wouldn’t have guessed as much as one-third!

Abrantes brilha, com esta Empresa, que fabrica uma eólica sem aquele ar tótó de Ventoínha plantada na Paisagem, uma Turbina Vertical, que podemos instalar nas nossas Cidades:

 

Empresa de Abrantes desenvolve eólica sem pás

O tamanho de uma torre eólica e o ruído que gera torna a instalação para produção própria, principalmemte nas cidades, no mínimo, impossível. Foi por isso que a STI, uma empresa de engenharia de Abrantes, decidiu desenvolver um novo gerador eólico - o Boreas - cuja principal característica é não ter pás.

Estranho? Nem por isso. Trata-se de uma eólica de eixo vertical - um conceito já existente nos EUA - que é mais pequena em altura e largura e também mais silenciosa porque não tem a rotação das pás. Como tal, pode ser montada na esquina de um edifício, num telhado ou cobertura ou então no topo de um poste.
Neste momento, a STI está na fase final de investigação do Boreas, ou seja, já desenhou o protótipo e agora está a analisar o comportamento ao vento e a sua eficiência energética. O processo custou 400 mil euros, metade dos quais foram apoio do QREN.

Como nos revela o nosso amigo Jon Cantin, na Woodmarvels, estes Estudantes do MIT não se contentaram só em serem Estudantes, e puzeram mãos à obra, para mudarem o Mundo para melhor, da boa maneira...

Estereo-Litografia, vem já montado, é só tirar da caixa, e uma resolução de fazer chorar as pedras da calçada!
Não admira que no Link da Kickstater onde eles lançaram o Projecto, já alcançaram SEIS VEZES o dinheiro que queriam!

FORM1 by Formlabs

Formlabs is a new company out of MIT lab students interest in 3d printer and proposes a different future for desktop 3D printers… replacing FDM totally for SL technology – which is superior in resolution but the drawback is having to “clean” the finished supporting materials in a chemical tub… a minor step in my opinion but one worth noting never the less.
  • 25 microns
  • uses SL
  • 156 cubic inch build volume (4.9 l x 4.9 w x 6.5 h)
  • unknown weight but guessing about the same as Replicator 2s
  • 2299$US (“pay now” and get it later)
This machine has some big guns attached to it, like SolidWorks founder Jon Hirschtick which is a massive company in the design and engineering field (I use Autodesk) and like MakerBot, lots of smart and creative people behind it. This is a new company so there isn’t much history to go on but this really looks like something that will happen for sure!

Vacuum Forming for Free

I recently needed 12 fake candlestick phones for a musical ("Crazy For You"). Real candlestick phones are incredibly expensive, and even replicas were too much for my budget. All 12 needed to match as well. I decided to make them all.

I wanted to match the shape of the bases to the real thing, but it would take too long to sculpt 12 bases, and casting them would be too expensive. It looked like it could be vacuum formed. I've worked with plastics in the past, but never with a vacuum former, though I've seen some in action. I couldn't spend a lot of time or money building a vacuum forming machine for this project; I figured if I liked what it was capable of, I would build a nicer one after this project based on what I learned.
After researching what I needed, I found I could build one for free. I already had the necessary components in my shop. I figured many prop makers will already have these parts as well, so I am sharing how I did it.

Flexible, high-strength polymer aerogels deliver "super-insulation" properties

Often called "frozen smoke", aerogels are among the amazing materials of our time, with fifteen Guinness Book of World Records entries to their name. However, despite their list of extreme properties, traditional aerogels are brittle, crumbling and fracturing easily enough to keep them out of many practical applications. A new class of mechanically robust polymer aerogels discovered at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Ohio may soon enable engineering applications such as super-insulated clothing, unique filters, refrigerators with thinner walls, and super-insulation for buildings.

SpaceX Grasshopper vertical takeoff and landing vehicle goes for a little hop

SpaceX's Falcon rocket has proven that it can fly, and now the private space transport company's Grasshopper is proving that it can hop. The vertical takeoff and landing test vehicle is part of a reusable first stage for Falcon 9 that's being developed by SpaceX to cut down on the cost of missions to space. On Friday, the Grasshopper took its first tiny test flight.
While it's a bit hard to see with all the smoke and debris from the blast in the way, the below video from SpaceX shows the Grasshopper, which consists of a Falcon 9 rocket, a Merlin-1D engine, four steel landing legs, and a steel support structure, taking a 6-foot high hop.
SpaceX says the next goal for the Grasshopper is to be able to hover at roughly 100 feet sometime in the next several months.

But this one might be the best use of all: A 22-year-old paraplegic college graduate, paralyzed since a 2007 car crash, used an exoskeleton to walk across the stage Saturday to receive his diploma.

Austin Whitney, a history and political science major at the University of California-Berkeley, spent nine months working with Homayoon Kazerooni, creator of the HULC exoskeleton and the eLegs rehabilitation system.

Looking for a challenge, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory decided to combine these substances and turn out a spongy, translucent version of a girl’s best friend.

The result is a diamond aerogel, definitely the least dense diamond ever and perhaps one of the most valuable aerogels ever. Both aerogels and diamonds have interesting qualities, so a substance that combines their properties could be useful for, say, optics, quantum computing or structural engineering, among other possibilities.
