X-Carve?

X-Carve: Inventables targets makers, startups with unveiling of the X-Carve
John Carpenter
Chicago-based design supplier Inventables took another step into the digital manufacturing sector Tuesday with the launch of X-Carve, a customizable computer-controlled milling machine.
The new model allows small makers to choose from a variety of features, from the size of the machine to the power of the cutting tool. The company says it can carve precision parts and other designs from plastic, wood and metal.
Inventables CEO Zach Kaplan ⇒ said companies making thousands of units of a product will still look to outsourced manufacturing options. He said the X-Carve targets hobbyists as well as maker startups that don’t yet produce the volume of bigger companies.

Starting small, aiming big

RS Components and Practical Action came together in a hackathon aimed at providing support to third world countries.

Three teams were brought together, made up of highly regarded engineers and designers including Ortis Deley from the Gadget Show, Adrian Bowyer, founder of the open source RepRap project and Jude Pullen from Design Modelling. Their aim was to produce an eco-friendly project that would generate electricity in third world countries. The teams had two days to plan, construct and present their ideas on how to enhance the lives of those living in poverty.

The first team, Maxwell, developed a way of producing power from the excess heat from cooking. The ‘SeeBrick’ that the team developed is made of clay and uses low cost metals (copper & steel) for wires. Its main function is to utilise the Seebeck Effect to create a voltage. Relying on the temperature difference to generate power, this brick is ideal for placement near a fire. The SeeBrick can generate enough power to light 15 LED lights. This innovation could supply a family home with enough light for reading, studying or even to charge a phone.

Large Vacuum Former

fizzPOP-TheBirminghamHackspace

We had a requirement for a big vacuum former, as many of our members were interested in costume making and cosplay and needed to be able to make torso size "armour" etc. so we first took look to see what was available commercially and soon realized anything we could afford even second hand would be way too small for our needs. Having decided that our only option was to build our own we scavenged the internet for ideas and came up with a basic design that evolved into the machine we have made.

Inventables Opens Their Easel CNC Software to All Users
Mike Senese

Today at MakerCon, Inventables’ Zach Kaplan announced that Easel, his company’s web-based CNC software, is moving out of beta testing and into full release for all users, for free.

Launched to a very limited number of users at SXSW in March, Easel works with Inventables’ Shapeoko CNC machine, allowing for fast design in a variety of materials and one-button simplicity. The company has slowly added additional testers while making sure that the software continued to perform safely and securely.

They’ve also been adding new functionalities, including an “open-in-Easel” button on the Inventables project pages, and a mirroring capability for creating inverse designs. Kaplan describes some of these latest features added to Easel, and shows off their latest rubber stamp project capability.

The Idea Builder: Dremel Releases a Mass-Market 3D Printer

Mike Senese

With a combination of accessible features, smart packaging, and a $999 price point, it’s obvious that the Dremel 3D Idea Builder is a machine aimed squarely at the mass market.

The Idea Builder, announced today at MakerCon in New York City, is the first 3D printer to be released by a major tool manufacturer, and represents further maturation of at-home additive manufacturing. With initial sales being handled by traditional tool-sales outlets Home Depot, Amazon, and Canadian Tire, it promises to help expose 3D printing to a new range of users.

NEW! Custom Cases from RS Components
Connector Geek

DesignSpark is proud to be able to offer a truly ground-breaking initiative to it's members - Custom Cases. Customers can specify a plastic case entirely to their own requirements and order as many or as few as they need. Let's have a closer look at this new product.
One of the big moments of any new project is turning the design that exists on paper (or on your computer screen) into reality. Some parts of the process are easy - prototyoing PCBs has never been easier, for example - but other parts can be really expensive. Let's take a look at enclosures. How can you best create a working prototype, with its case, without breaking the bank?

http://www.rs-online.com/designspark/electronics/eng/knowledge-item/new-custom-cases-from-rs-components

THE NEW CRUMBLE CONTROLLER

This truly game-changing device opens up countless possibilities for ‘embedded intelligence’ as required by the new national curriculum.
What makes it unique is the much lower cost than comparable devices and the ease of use.

Non-electronics experts can use it right away BUT also offers great potential for advanced users.

Milling 101: Understanding Milling Bits
jeremy

Choosing the right milling bit for the job at hand can be an extremely important factor in whether a milling project comes out amazingly, alright, or not at all. Combine that with having more choices of bits than materials, and choosing the right bit can be quite a difficult task. However, by answering a simple set of questions, you can greatly simplify your choice of bit. Here are the things you need to ask:

  • What material am I cutting?
  • What is my machine capable of?
  • What shape am I cutting?

Let’s quickly go through each of these and what they mean.

É mais rápido do que o Ubuntu;
Mais simples;
Instala TUDO à primeira;

About PCLinuxOS

What is PCLinuxOS?

PCLinuxOS is a free easy to use Linux-based Operating System for x86 desktops or laptops.
PCLinuxOS is distributed as a LiveCD, and can also be installed to your computer. The LiveCD mode lets you try PCLInuxOS without making any changes to your computer. If you like it, you can install the operating system to your hard drive. Locally installed versions of PCLinuxOS utilize the Advanced Packaging Tool (or APT), a package management system (originally from the Debian distribution), together with Synaptic, a GUI frontend to APT for easy software installation. PCLinuxOS has over 12,000 rpm software packages available from our software repository.

Audi set to cut vehicle weight with introduction of fiberglass springs

Scott Collie

The quest for ever-greater fuel efficiency is driving auto manufacturers to extreme lengths to reduce the weight of their vehicles. Aluminum, carbon fiber and fiberglass are all being used to help meet stringent emissions standards. In its search for "enlightenment," Audi has announced it will introduce glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) springs in its vehicles before the end of the year.
The core of the spring is made up of fiberglass strands, impregnated with epoxy resin and twisted together. Audi then uses a machine to wrap additional strands of fiberglass around the core and cures the unit in an oven. The strands are wrapped across each other at a 45-degree angle, to allow the load to be equally distributed across the whole spring.

Precision Board Plus

High density urethane foam that is ideal for milling

Precision Board Plus High Density Urethane (also known as tooling board, a competitor to RenShape or Ren board) is a closed cell rigid urethane foam board that can withstand up to 200º F continuous exposure. It can be cut or bonded into a variety of shapes for final machining or shaping. Higher machine feed rates are easily achieved compared to wood, epoxy and alloy substrates. The material mills beautifully and is safe to laser cut/laser engrave. It has a density of 48 lbs per cubic foot. Buy everything you need to glue the material, repair nicks or holes, and prime for your final finish.

Recycling Aluminum (Aluminium) - Make your own Al foundry.
It has always been a very fascinating thing to see the things that we as humans have been able to accomplish through time. How we were able to build amazing things, utilizing only our imaginations and the resources around us.
This project is no stranger to these feelings I have and can teach a lot of things to anyone attempting it. We gave it a try at our hackerspace H3 Laboratories
There are various ways that you can do this project of course, so you can take ideas and go melt some aluminum at your house or hackerspace. Invite some people over and melt Aluminum together. It may look simple but it is very enjoyable and camaraderie forming.

Storm lighter
bricobart

Storm lighters are nice.
Storm lighters are useful.
But storm lighters are expensive. Too expensive for what it is: a sturdy fuel tank combined with a starter.

Here's a way to boost up an ordinay lighter into a cheap, water- & stormproof fuel torch.

Needs:
- some alu tubes in different sizes
- a few brass caps
- a lighter
- a few tampons

Auto-Defesa!

CNCSimulator Pro for Windows

Download and install CNCSimulator Pro for Windows. See this page for what is needed to be able to run the program. Also remember that a good graphics card is needed for fast simulations. Thank you for your interest in our products!

Make a kite-flying machine

Kiteman

Many people try to fly microkites in the breeze from a desk fan.
Almost every single one fails, due to the extremely turbulent nature of the breeze from a fan. It's worse than trying to fly a full-size kite between tall buildings.

This device allows you to fly microkites indoors, and could be seen as a kind of art installation as well.

Zim, parece bom!

Zim offers dual-head 3D printing right out of the box

Jonathan Fincher

With easy-to-use devices like the Buccaneer and the Cube hitting the market, we're beginning to see a growing trend of 3D printers aimed squarely at the consumer. Now Zeepro, a design team spread across Switzerland, France, and the US, is adding another desktop printer into the mix that promises to give users an even more elaborate set of tools to work with. The Zim is one of the few pre-assembled 3D printers that offers dual print heads and a greater resolution to create more complex objects, as well as a camera to monitor print jobs through a smartphone.

Thread Cutting - Internal and External on a Myford ML10 Lathe

qthurtle

This Instructable shows my first effort at thread cutting. It seemed to be reasonably successful and I didn't want to forget what I did, so having a long-term record should be useful for me. I don't expect to do too much thread cutting in the future???

The Instructable gives details about making a pair of internal/external metric threads in 1" (25mm) diameter aluminium tube/bar. It covers the calculations, the preparation of the cutting tools and doing the whole job. I have a Myford ML10 with a metric leadscrew, however only a couple of steps will be specific to that lathe.

How To Cut A Straight Line Using A Skill Saw Or Jig Saw

mbecks

This Instructable will teach you how you can cut straight lines using an electric skill saw, circular saw or jig saw. This is very handy when cutting long boards like a piece of ply wood. The ideal thing to use would be a table saw, but like me, some people can't afford one.

Antique Heart Pine

A reclaimed hardwood that is durable and dense

Much of the wood recovered from woolen mills, tobacco barns and the river basins of the Southeast is from old-growth Heart Pine. Many of the densest, heaviest timbers sank and have been submerged underwater for over a century, making this a green reclaimed wood. Antique Heart Pine is particularly heavy (37 – 40 lbs per cubic foot), durable and dense with tight growth rings, unlike most of the pine used in the lumber industry today.
Because this is a natural material, the color and pattern will vary slightly from piece to piece. The photos above show 2 common grain patterns. Please see the thickness tolerance below and note that thickness will change based on conditions like humidity.
Thinner boards take more time and labor to produce; therefore, while the 1/16" pieces are thinner, they are the same price as the 1/8" pieces.
