Lusideias!

Isto promete...
Dica da Prtuguese Entrpeneurs;

MacroFab Eases Path from Prototype to Production

Jon Christian
When Nick Johnson Kickstarted Re:Load Pro, an electronics testing tool he developed that draws the same amount of current regardless of the voltage across it, he worried about the time-consuming prototyping process he’d experienced with Seeed Studios and Smart Prototyping, both of which had required a Gerber format and bill of materials before they could provide a quote.
Instead, he decided to work with MacroFab, which builds prototype circuit boards uploaded with a slick online tool — and then, crucially, lets customers order a full production run once they’re satisfied with the design.
“The much shorter feedback cycle of MacroFab’s online tools aren’t to be underestimated,” Johnson said. “I can quickly see what parts are actually available, with real prices, and get a good line-by-line indication of which things are worth spending the time to try and optimize or replace. I can also see quickly how big an impact different price breaks will have.”

Mini Hydrogen Generator

This instructables is for b moody showing him how to make a small low cost hydrogen generator. I made this for under 25$ and puts out about a half a cup a min.

Centrifugal Casting machine from a washing machine
Pirate_Prince
This project came about, out of sheer necessity as I will explain shortly.
I have to say from the start though that, this is NOT as per say, how to do it yourself with step by step instructions and parts list (though I will do my best to list those parts that I had to purchase). but how I did it and possibly how you could also do it, following some of the basic steps I took, that is, if you need one of these and like me, can't afford to buy even a second hand one let alone new and *can* get hold of a suitable washing machine like the one I have used and are good at DIY as well as have some basic electrical and electronics understanding.

New Matter MOD-t: a 3D printer for everyone
New Matter makes 3D printing way easy. Low price. Wireless connectivity. And an online store full of cool designs that you can buy, customize, print, and share.

What if you could send a physical object to a friend like a text message? What if you could subscribe to a series of objects like you do with a podcast? What if adjusting a 3D model was as easy as Instagramming a photo?
Yeah, we thought that would be cool too. That’s why we created New Matter.

Could this little-known biomass generator start an energy revolution?
Eric Mack

It could be the most important portable power plant you've never heard of. It's called the "Power Pallet" and it is essentially a combined biomass refinery and generator that fits on a single pallet and can kick out up to 20 kilowatts of electricity.

I came across the shiny yet unassuming contraption that looks like ... well, like a miniature refinery attached to a miniature power plant, while roaming the back lot at the Bay Area Maker Faire where many of the bizarre or vaguely steampunk Burning Man industrial art creations were also on display.

Magnetic propeller balancerDanijel0frk
So you have spent a lot of money on your diy quadcopter(or any multirotor) and refuse to give any more, but you still need a propeller balancer. Balanced propeller is very if not the most important thing for multirotors.
Guess what, you can make your own, from old computer components.
If you happend to work in ICT company, there is always a lot of that stuff around. Besides broken hardware, some tools may also come handy. Let's begin with stuff you are going to need.

New Feddz E-Bike: Lifestyle Cruiser With Baggage Storage
Alyn Wallace
Germany based company Emo Bike GmbH have recently designed, built and showcased their new offering - the Feddz. While traditional motorcycles don’t really offer much in the way of storage, the Feddz offers 23 litres of space where you would expect to find a fuel tank and engine. This is because the Feddz is an E-Bike, powered by Lithiom batteries and an electric motor and the company are pushing the new technology with the slogan,“Let’s Feddz the city.”

Nitinol! Construam a vossa Máquina-Maravilha

Memory spring and memory wire
Memory Wire
This nickel/titanium (NiTi) alloy initially ‘remembers’ that it should be straight. If it is bent into a different shape and then dropped in very hot water (90°C), it springs back to its original straight condition. It will repeat this behaviour any number of times.
The wire can also be heat treated to remember different shapes. It simply has to be held in the desired shape and then heated to 500°C in a small oven for a few minutes. This means that pupils can now get involved in creating smart springs and other components that a few years ago would have challenged front line researchers.
Memory wire has several important medical applications. It is used, for example, to make surgical stents – small woven frames that balloon outwards to open blocked arteries. It is also used for orthodontic braces. Some smart textiles use woven-in memory wire to change the shape (and support) of garments when they reach body temperature. Because it can be heat treated, the potential of memory wire in designing and making is virtually unlimited.
The wire is sold by the metre.
Two-Way Memory Spring
These remarkable springs, based on a brass alloy, ‘remember’ to open up at around 90°C and close again when cool. If immersed in hot water at or around 90°C they will open in a split second and close as quickly if dropped in cold water. Such springs have many industrial applications – e.g., in sprinkler and fire damping systems where they replace expensive single-use only fusible links.
Memory springs open and close with considerable force and are used in countless applications where movement is wanted at the opening and closure threshold temperatures.

Hardware is the New Web

An Arduino workshop at the Noisebridge hackerspace in San Francisco (© Mitch Altman, CC BY-SA 2.0)
With hardware start-ups on the increase, countless gadgets funded via Kickstarter and a resurgence of interest in electronics as a hobby, it looks as though hardware is set become the new Web.
From the first public radio broadcast in 1910 to the home computer revolution of the 1980s, electronics served as the most visible face of technology in the 20th century. When for almost 100 years everyday lives were being transformed by a stream of new appliances, intrepid early adopters could get a slice of the action if they could solder, and electronics empires were being born in garages.
With the arrival of the PC and then the Web we saw a shift in focus, and while software requires computers and the Internet is built upon networking and communications hardware, these took a backseat position and applications and online services garnered more attention. All the hottest start-ups were online and many budding engineers took to software development rather than soldering.
As we move further into the 21st century it appears that the balance may be redressed, with attention shifting back towards hardware — or perhaps products that span both physical and online worlds. What follows is a brief look at some of the enablers, drivers and indicators of this shift.

The Radiation Boy (Gameboy Classic Afterlife)

ChrissTheChiller

I recently came up with a broken gameboy classic, so i wanted to use the case for something useful. My first idea was to put in a tiny television (aka  LG's HB 620 T) But due to the bad software used in it, i decided to cancel this. Another try with a slightly bigger portable television didn't leave me happy, as i would have had to change the display window of the gameboy too much, which would have led to losing it's original face.

So I left the case in the closet for some weeks until i stumbled upon an old russian geiger counter I bought some 15 years ago on a flea market.

At that time I totally messed up the original case and never was happy with it (obviously!)

How to Make a Siphon Wave Generator

howtowithmanish

This design is similar to that of US patent 7355298. It's not for profit. I've changed almost half of the equipment used. And the design.

A siphon refers to an inverted U-tube that allows liquid to flow uphill above the surface of the reservoir(a tank with the greater height of water) without the help of pumps, powered by the fall of the liquid as it flows down the tube under the pull of gravity, and is discharged at a level lower than the surface of the reservoir.

So in this Instructable, I'll be demonstrating the concepts behind Siphon Generation. And how to build your own Siphon Wave Generator at home using easily available hardware materials such as pipes.

Waves are a powerful source of solar power. The sun heats the earth causing the air near the ground to heat and rise creating wind. The air over the sea is cooler and therefore falls. This change in wind, causes wind to blow from land to sea. When the wind blows over a body of water the energy of the wind is exchanged to the waves it creates. The power of the waves is concentrated solar power. The power created in the waves is both the movement of the waves and the lifting of the water to the crest of the waves. And therefore these waves can be used to generate huge amounts of energy.

Understanding Motor and Gearbox Design

ianwalters

Why Spend Time Choosing the Right Motor and Gearbox?
Choosing the correct combination of a motor and a gearbox for a given application is very important, both in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and in actual engineering projects.  Without appropriate motor-gearbox combos, your team will find that your robot does not function as quickly and effectively as intended, and may have a tendency to burn out motors.

This tutorial will teach you the fundamentals of gearbox design and implementation.  First, I will teach you about motor characteristics.  Next, I will discuss how to choose a motor and gear ratio given application requirements.  I will then provide information about choosing a gearbox, followed by an overview of the motors and gearboxes available in FRC.  Finally, I will demonstrate how to use what you learn in this tutorial in an example problem and point out extra tools and resources if you want to learn more.

This tutorial was made through the Autodesk FIRST High School Intern program.

How to make a Polymer AR-15 Lower at Home

Sebastian and a friend have described in detail their latest successful attempt at making an AR-15 lower at home. They used a CNC mill to machine the lower out of a block of Delrin.

Neither of the pair were machinists. Anyone with enough motivation can learn how to make an AR-15 at home. If you can't afford a CNC mill, you could always build one yourself.

The shell of your next device could be made of paper ... partly

By Ben Coxworth

It's possible that your next laptop computer could contain parts of your present-day notebook ... not your notebook computer, mind you, but your actual notebook. At least, it will if China's PEGA Design and Engineering has anything to say about it. The company's new Paper PP Alloy, made from a combination of recycled paper and polypropylene, is intended for use in the shells of consumer electronic devices.
According to PEGA, not only is the material strong and flexible, but it is also recyclable and reusable, and it's inexpensive to produce. Additionally, because it can be injection molded, it could be used in existing production facilities without having to make extensive changes.

Versatile Wind Harvester breaks from traditional turbine design

By Paul Ridden

From huge kites to sea-bound flywheels and roof-top installations to tree-like art creations, we've seen many different approaches to capturing energy from the wind. One design, though, reigns supreme - the tri-blade turbine tower. It's not exactly a trouble-free life at the top and there are those who do not look upon these monsters favorably, most often complaining about the noise and the not so picturesque view. With support from Nottingham Trent University's Future Factory project, Heath Evdemon is currently building a new type of wind turbine called the Wind Harvester that's claimed to be virtually silent, doesn't need to loom high over the landscape and can operate in a variety of wind conditions.

Hiriko - the fold-up electric two-seater set for 2013

By James Holloway

That the Hiriko electric car prototype is small is obvious to anyone. Perhaps less obvious is that, in parking, the Hiriko becomes even smaller. Thanks to a folding mechanism that tucks the rear of the car in under the chassis, the Hiriko's length can be reduced to the width of an ordinary automobile. The result? It's possible to park three Hirikos in a single parking bay.

New type of rechargeable battery – just add water

By Alan Brandon

Scientists at Stanford have developed a battery that uses nanotechnology to create electricity from the difference in salt content between fresh water and sea water. The researchers hope to use the technology to create power plants where fresh-water rivers flow into the ocean. The new "mixing entropy" battery alternately immerses its electrodes in river water and sea water to produce the electrical power.

Shockwave-Generating Wave Discs Could Replace Internal Combustion Engines
By Rebecca Boyle

Michigan researchers have built a prototype of a new auto motor that does away with pistons, crankshafts and valves, replacing the old internal combustion engine with a disc-shaped shock wave generator. It could slash the weight of hybrid cars and reduce auto emissions by 90 percent.
The generator is about the size of a saucepot, and would replace the 1,000-pound power train in most cars — no transmission, cooling system, emissions regulation or fluids needed. Norbert Müller and colleagues at Michigan State University showed off the new motor prototype at a meeting with the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency.

http://www.popsci.com/cars/article/2011-03/shockwave-generating-wave-discs-could-replace-cars-internal-combustion-engines

Diesel-battery generators could cut troop fuel use at least by half.
By Phil McKenna
The U.S. Armed Forces are heavily burdened by the financial and tactical costs of transporting fuel to the battlefield. This July, in an effort to address the problem, the United States Marine Corps will deploy a pair of diesel generators coupled with powerful batteries to frontline troops in Afghanistan. The hybrid power systems should cut by 50 to 70 percent the amount of fuel needed to generate electricity, according to the manufacturer, Earl Energy of Portsmouth, Virginia.
The generators that U.S. military camps currently use operate inefficiently because they need to handle ocassional peaks in demand. "You may have a 10-kilowatt generator that at any time is only producing 1.5 kilowatts of power to satisfy its load," says Doug Moorehead, president of Earl Energy. "So you are wasting 8.5 kilowatts of power that you aren't storing for later use," he says.

Video: Jelly-Like Artificial Muscles Improve Robotic Flexibility With Rotary Motion
By Julie Beck

Replacing some of the nuts and bolts in robots’ bodies with stretchy artificial muscles would allow them to be more flexible and lifelike than ever. Researchers at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute in New Zealand have succeeded in using such soft muscles in a motor that creates continuous rotational force. The motor uses only a few parts beside the muscle and needs no gears, cogs or bearings.

Shotgun Guitar

Swedish police discovered a double barrel shotgun disguised as a guitar when they raided the home of a man suspected of dealing in stolen weapons.

Aside from the six more conventional weapons found in the apartment and a quantity of ammunition, police discovered that a wall-mounted guitar was not quite as it first appeared.

The neck of the guitar has been hollowed out and equipped with two shotgun barrels, while the body of the string instrument contained the beginnings of trigger mechanism.

Fusão em todo o lado?

Fusão em todo o lado?
We may even have to simply ground the excess in many cases.  Needless to say this technology if it succeeds will be a complete revolution of the global economy as we can expect these devices to be placed everywhere including trains and ships.  It will also be swift.  Both this technology and the polywell are amenable to early mass production since no radioactive shielding is needed.

Next Big future blog has been working hard at keeping on top of developments around the Bussard Polywell.  I have tacked together the last three posts and added some of the pictures.  We pretty well know how big the reactor sphere has to be and it looks like technical issues are getting sorted out.
The sphere needs to be at least 1.3 meters in radius.  More importantly, a small increase above that will have a dramatic effect on energy production.  Thus if you can achieve break even the next step could be already at hand.
