Reversing UV damage on ABS plastic
Like so many others, I have been in love with Star Wars since I first saw the movies as a child. I also have a lifelong love for costuming. These loves finally came together in the mid 2000's when I first met some members of the 501st Legion at a convention (for those not in the know, the 501st is an international charity costuming club, specializing in the bad guy characters from a galaxy far far away). In 2009 I joined the ranks of the legion as TK-5246.

While on the internet looking for ways of dealing with this cruel twist of fate I discovered Retr0bright. It's an open source formula of ingredients available at your local grocery store developed by vintage computer collectors. It supposedly reverses the process of UV discoloration in ABS. I thought surely there would be hundreds of threads about this on the 501st forums but alas, there were none. Some people mentioned it as a possibility, but it seemed most everyone stuck with the tried and true methods I spoke of earlier. After much debate with myself, I decided I had nothing to lose. I got my materials and tried it. The results are like magic, read on to see how I went about it.

A má notícia é que estão estes Kits esgotados.
Mas como se trata duma Empresa já estabelecida, é esperar por que eles fabriquem mais uns tantos...



DropLit: the low-cost DIY Resin Printer

Today at Maker Faire Detroit, the team from SeeMeCNC unveiled a new printer: DropLit. Resin printers do not extrude material. Rather, these printers use a resin bath –such as MakerJuice Labs– which is selectively cured by light from a DLP projector.
Traditionally, resin printers are not sold as kits and command prices starting around $2,000 and up. When they said this, they were probably referring to the B9 Creator, which is in that price range. John Oly and his team plan to keep the DropLit kit sub $600, but to do this they are excluding the costly DLP projector necessary for a fully functional resin printer from the kit. This same idea of leaving out the projector has been seen in a couple other DLP resin printer kits, such as the Sedgewick. The DropLit has a distinct advantage that it isn’t crowdfunded and comes from a group that is already selling and supporting impressive printers.

Many entrepreneurs are seeing opportunities in 3D printing marketplaces. Offering a service to amateur designers for selling their 3D files seem to be the big deal. For now, market size is very questionable but as a 3D designer you might want to give it a try, even more if your designs really rock.
There are 3 types of marketplaces for 3D print files:
  • 3D printing services: offer designers to open a store on their platforms and take a commission each time a 3D print is ordered. No download available, only the print. Examples: Shapeways, Sculpteo, i.materialise, Kraftwürx
  • Free sharing: These are the platforms specialized in Creative Commons and Public Domain files.

Flat polymer sheets bend themselves into 3D shapes - just add water

When the petal of a flower is being formed, its shape is achieved by cells in one area expanding more than cells in an adjacent area. This uneven expansion causes the material to buckle, creating the desired curves and creases. Scientists from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst have taken that same principle, and applied it to flat polymer gel sheets that fold themselves into three-dimensional shapes when exposed to water. Some day, such sheets could serve a number of useful purposes.

The researchers use a photolithography process, in which parts of each sheet are masked with a thin painted-on coating, followed by an exposure to ultraviolet light. The polymer that is masked from the UV light will uniformly expand like a sponge when exposed to water. In areas that aren't masked, however, the UV light causes the molecules within the polymer to become cross-linked. This means that the material in those areas will only experience limited expansion when water is added.

Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology have a bit of a penchant for speed. And it’s not just the nanoscale 3D printed race car that gives it away… the team there have developed a mirror guided, laser equipped 3D printer that is officially faster than any that has come before.
…printing speed used to be measured in millimetres per second – our device can do five metres in one second.
Not only is it fast, it is also remarkably accurate. The printed structures are highly detailed, yet no bigger than a grain of sand. These results are achieved using a process called two-photon lithography – developed through the combined might of specialised molecular chemists working together with mechanical engineers.

SAFFiR robot could be putting out fires on Navy ships

If there's one thing that you don't want happening on board a ship, it's a fire. People on board burning ships can't simply run out onto the streets, as they hopefully could in the case of a structural fire, plus many people caught belowdecks don't have windows nearby to climb out of. Then, there's also the fact that crew members fighting such fires have to work in narrow, claustrophobic passageways, instead of wide-open roads. Given that fires are particularly possible on military ships, due to attacks by enemy forces, America's Naval Research Laboratory is now developing a special something to help fight fires at sea - it's called SAFFiR, the Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot.

SAFFiR will be an autonomous bipedal humanoid robot, based on the CHARLI-L1 robot created at Virginia Tech - the school is a partner in the project, as is the University of Pennsylvania.

An Open Source Selective Laser Sintering 3D Printer for Rapid Manufacturing in Wax

Motivation:
The current leading open source 3D printers print only in ABS or PLA and are restricted both by the limitations inherent in these materials and by the limitations of the FDM process. Though these printers are entirely capable of self-replication and of producing parts for a variety of light-duty applications, they cannot produce pieces that can replace the cast aluminum parts found in power machinery, CNC equipment, or in numerous other high-strength applications.
Goals:
The goal of this project is to provide a method for rapidly manufacturing complex pieces in metal by manufacturing a wax "positive" of the object, which is then used to make a mold for the lost wax casting process. Current metal rapid manufacturing techniques rely on high-power lasers, plasma jets, or electric arcs to sinter metal powder. This approach sidesteps the higher costs and dangers of these high-power systems in favor of a relatively low power laser-sintering technique.

...Ao menos, parece que sim!
Estéreo-Litografia, eis a tecnologia que este modelo de Impressora 3D usa;
Uma impressora 3D que se constrói em casa,  tem uma qualidade de acabamento ímpar, não usa nenhuma ferramenta que se estrague com facilidade, não cria cheiros, nem porcaria, o que é porreiro para agradar às Patroas!
Bacano como o caraças, mais um achado do Blog da Ponoko...

Build a 3D printer at home (really)

Detailed instructions for a Stereolithographic 3D printer on Instructables.

Rob Hopeless has posted an Instructable showing how to build a Stereolithographic 3D printer at home as part of the Instructables contest to win an Epilog Laser cutter. If you read through the tutorial, I think you’ll agree that he is a serious contender in the competition.

He went all out on this Instructable. There is a parts list, including companies who sell every part, plenty of photos at every step, downloadable files for a CNC (ok, so you probably can’t do this part at home), and 3D diagrams explaining the assembly.

The advantage of stereolithography over the extrusion used by printers like the Makerbot and RepRap, is the relative ease of achieving extremely high quality prints. The downside is the UV-sensitive resin required to run the printer is quite expensive at around $200 per liter.




Não um projecto faça-você-mesmo, mas um de encomendar,  e um projecto de extrusão, eis um projecto que convence, impressão em grande, rápida, e de alta qualidade.
Isso é bom!



Ultimaker: the new standard for DIY 3D printers?


Large, quick, high-quality prints. What’s not to like?

Ultimaker kits only started shipping in May 2011, but it has already gained a loyal following. Most recently, a dozen or so local hobbyists brought their Ultimakers to the 3D Printing Event during Dutch Design Week just to show them off (images below).

And who can blame them? The Ultimaker has a large build area and produces high quality prints remarkably fast. If that’s not enough, it’s open source (due to the fact that it’s an offshoot of the RepRap family). The only downside seems to be the fact that it’s somewhat more expensive than its most similar competitor, the Makerbot Thing-O-Matic, at 1200 euros (~$1625 right now) compared to $1299.
