Havia a Foto-Montagem, isto será a 3D-Montagem!

3D Printer That Scans Objects to Print on Its Surface
Cabe Atwell

When it comes to unusual 3D printers and materials, MIT takes the proverbial cake. Students and researchers from the prestigious institution have designed printers that can print food (The Cornucopia and the latest machine to print ice cream), robots (Origami Robot), and even composite bones (CPU optimized designs of soft and stiff polymers).
Now researchers have designed a prototype 3D printer that is capable of locating and printing on objects that are positioned on its printing tray. Trying to print on an object usually involves ‘eyeballing’ the location or using specialized camera equipment to get the precise location. MIT’s solution was to combine the printer with a 3D scanner, making the job a heck of a lot easier to do, especially on irregular surfaces. Not only that, but it works for previously stopped printing projects that would otherwise become useless preformed objects destined for the trash.

Sintratec: Affordable Home SLS Printer Coming Soon

Caleb Kraft

Desktop Selective Laser Sintering, or SLS, is a highly sought after item in the 3d printing world. SLS printers print by layering fine powder, then selectively “sintering” or melting it with a laser. Since there is a solid “cake” of powder, no support materials are necessary. Typically these machines are extremely expensive and quite large. Sintratec is hoping to change that.
The Sintratec team currently consists of 3 electrical engineers based out of Switzerland: Joscha Zeltner, Christian Von Burg, and Dominik Solenicki. The three hope to launch a crowdfunding campaign in October to raise enough money to ship at least 60 kit printers. Their current target price is under 3999€ ($5,277), which is considerably cheap for an SLS machine, though still quite pricey compared to your typical FDM printer. However, as you can see in the video above, they are quite different machines.

 Guide to Professional 3D Printers
There are over 100 industry-grade 3D printer models currently on the market. These printers are large, commercial 3D printing machines intended for professional use. At Sculpteo we exclusively uses professional 3D printers.
We’ve put together a guide to these industrial 3D printers based on a selection of printers from each manufacturer that best represents the range of options out there — from price to materials to build size.
We hope this guide will help you determine the best 3D printer for your business needs. And don’t forget, you don’t have to buy your own printer to have access to professional quality 3D printing. Sculpteo offers an online 3D printing service using a variety of the printers listed in this guide.
Note on pricing: Because commercial 3D printers are sold through third-party, licensed resellers, there is not a standard retail price for each printer. Prices are only available via a quote from one of these resellers. We have recorded the pricing below based either on a quote from a reseller that asked to stay anonymous or from another online source (with a link).
The guide is organized by printer technology. For details explaining each process, check out The Different Technologies Behind 3D Printing.

Space: The Final (Maker) Frontier

Andrew Back

A look at three relatively low cost routes to getting your electronics project into space.
There was a time — not that very long ago — when if you wanted to get a functional piece of electronics into space it took an obscene amount of money and a few hundred tonnes of volatile rocket fuel. Suffice to say that, unless you were part of a national space programme, a global telecoms company or an evil supervillain, you were probably out of luck.
Thanks to ever smaller and lower cost technologies, coupled with a burning desire to get in on the action and a healthy dose of inventiveness, this is all changing — and at a somewhat rapid pace. This post takes a look at just a few of the options available for getting your project into space.

Vejam e MARAVILHEM-SE!

Spraying natural fibers to build cotton-candy surfaces

Zoe Romano

During Fab10- Fab Festival in Barcelona I met Jin Shihui who introduced me to CandyProject, a research project exploring the process of spraying natural fiber to create a non-woven textile that can be used to produce anything from building components to ornamental artifacts.
By means of air pressure we separate the fibers from a roving allowing them to self-organize and reassemble due to the surface tension caused by a fine mist of adhesive. This creates a controlled fibrous aggregation producing an emergent morphospace encompassing the initial substructure.
The robot Jin is holding in her hands in the picture above uses air pressure to separate fibers into individual strands. While the fibers are still separated they are embedded with an adhesive spray and all parameters are controlled within the robot  with an Arduino Uno:

India starts countdown for Mars mission

David Szondy

India has started the clock on its most ambitious space project to date. On Sunday at 6:08 IST, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) began the countdown for its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). If all goes to schedule, the unmanned probe will lift off on Tuesday from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR), on the island of Sriharikota at 2:38 pm IST atop a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C25), marking the point where India hopes to launch itself into the space-faring big leagues.

All About Magnetization Direction

What do we mean by a magnet’s Magnetization Direction?  Why do we care about this?  Can a magnet’s magnetization direction be changed?  What’s the difference between axially and diametrically magnetized magnets?  How can I tell them apart?  Why can’t I get a block magnet magnetized along the length or width?  What magnetization direction should be used with directional sensors?

What do we mean by a magnet’s Magnetization Direction?  Is it important?

The strong magnets found at K&J Magnetics are called sintered neodymium magnets,.  They are the most powerful type of permanent magnet available.  Sintered means the metal is pressed together at high temperatures in a very specific way to make a strong magnet.  You can learn a bit more about this process in How Neodymium Magnets are Made.

Batatas!!!

Discovery shines a light on potential cure for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Darren Quick

It is generally believed that aggregations of proteins are responsible for brain disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. However, the difficulty has been in detecting the aggregates responsible and removing them from the brain. Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and Polish Wroclaw University of Technology have found a potential solution using lasers.
Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are thought to be caused by aggregates of amyloid beta protein that start to inhibit proper cellular processes in the brain. Although it is technically possible to cure the diseases by detecting and removing the amyloid protein aggregates using chemicals, these chemicals are highly toxic and harmful to the patient.

Ford reveals new rapid prototyping and low-volume production techniques [w/video]

Jonathon Ramsey

It's called "F3T," and that stands for Ford Free-form Fabrication Technology. The process that The Blue Oval has developed means being able to sidestep the weeks-long process of tool-and-die making when engineers want to construct a new part, allowing them to fabricate a three-dimensional part from a two-dimensional sheet of metal in just hours.

Turn An Electric Motor Into a Pickup!

offtandiscord

Most toys/gadgets/walkmans/tape players/electronic object that needs something to move will have a motor of some kind inside it. These can be easily turned into pickups thusly...

In this demonstration I made a very basic instrument construction just to show how the pickup is used. I will talk about this in the last step. How you adapt your own version to your instrument depends entirely on your imagination!

Sugru Pot Handle Octopus

Re-inventaram a Roda!

Shark Wheel literally reinvents the wheel, at least for skateboards

Dave LeClair

A company called Shark Wheel is aiming to reinvent, well, the wheel. Instead of the conventional circular shape we're all familiar with, this new skateboard wheel is based around a cube shape. While this might seem illogical, the company claims its new wheels ride smoother, faster, and offer better grip than traditional skateboard wheels.
The wheels are based around a shape that fits inside a cube. They aren't quite a square, and aren't quite circular, but are made up of three strips, each of which create a helical shape when they roll. This forms a sine wave pattern where the wheels make contact with the ground.
The creators say this results in less friction points on the ground to allow the wheel to roll faster than a traditional skateboard wheel and also allows for better handling in rough and wet terrain, which causes problems for normal wheels.

Pocket Stereo Amplifier

 drac5290

a while a go i came across this instructable: Rechargable pocket sized amplifier
a
nd loved the idea of a pocket sized audio amp but was disappointed but its lack of capability, namely only using mono amplification and only having 1 output option
hence the idea for the stereo amplifier was born
doing a little digging on  amplifier IC's I found the LM 386 a mono amplifier ic with some extra capability's like bass boost and 200 times gain settings (but more on those later)

So how do you take a Mono amplifier and make a stereo? easy, stack 2 side by side

this amp also contains 3 output modes: internal speakers, external 3.5mm jack and RCA

Move over 3D printing, self-assemblng 4D-printed materials are on the way

Donna Taylor

Molecular self-assembly, whereby molecules position themselves into defined arrangements, is commonplace in biological systems and nanotechnology. But researchers at MIT are working on so called "4D printing" technology that aims to bring the process up to the macro scale, enabling 3D-printed materials to be programmed to self-assemble into predefined shapes and structures. Just imagine buying some flat-pack furniture, bringing it home and enjoying a coffee whilst you watch it assemble itself.

This month, Skylar Tibbits, director of the MIT Self-Assembly lab, was named as one of the six Architectural League winners for collaborative research into programmable materials. The 4D printing process (with the 4th dimension being self-assembly over time) involves the use of materials that change their shape in response to movement or environmental factors, such as the presence of water, air, and/or temperature changes.

Monkey Light Pro turns bicycle wheels into colorful, animated displays

Jonathan Fincher

There are plenty of interesting ways to deck out your bicycle, but MonkeyLectric may have come up with the ultimate way to make it stand out on the road. The company's new Monkey Light Pro is a set of LED bars that attach to a bicycle wheel and can be programmed to play colorful animations

This isn't the first light-up bicycle wheel system we've seen, and MonkeyLectric itself has produced other models in the past, but none have been as elaborate as this. Over the last two years, the company has been hand-making prototypes of the newer system for special events and projects. During that time, the developers practiced their manufacturing processes with smaller products until they felt ready to launch a more complex system.

http://www.gizmag.com/monkey-light-pro-bicycle-wheel-display/27700/

Simplesmente... Genial!

Lumigrids – the LED projector that keeps cyclists out of potholes

Chris Wood

Lumigrids is a simple, clever and above all useful concept that aims to improve the safety of cycling at night. The device is an LED projector that fits on the handlebars of your bicycle, projecting a square grid onto the ground before you. By looking at the changes and abnormalities in the grid, the cyclist is able to easily pick out potholes and other obstacles, helping them to avoid potential crashes and falls.
The team behind Lumigrids claim that the design is an improvement over traditional bicycle lamps, which casts shadows around both concave and convex obstacles, making it difficult for the rider to judge the surface effectively. Lumigrids' grid projection system makes it a lot easier to identify the nature of the abnormalities, with the squares of the grid bending and changing in an easy way for the rider to process.

Turn Empty Water Bottles Into Alcohol Fueled Rockets
NightHawkInLight

Not long ago I was challenged to create a project using a water bottle that could be displayed in a one minute long video. While I missed the one minute mark, I think I still managed to make a pretty entertaining device.

The rocket and launcher featured in the above video function off of a very simple concept of igniting a flammable vapor using a replacement barbecue igniter to propel the bottle through the air. The parts for this project should cost no more than $15, with the igniter taking up the majority of that price tag at about $10. The bottles can be reused many times until the heat from repeated shots eventually warps the plastic.
