Torcer a 90º!

Twisty Toy

 rschoenm

I designed this simple twisty toy based on an epicyclic bar angular transmission. It's a cool little fidget toy that looks like it shouldn't turn. Works well as a stress reliever!

You can make this toy with either a wood lathe, or a 3d printer, or a laser cutter.

Supplies:

Hardwood like maple and cherry

1/8" brass rod

3/8" dowel

RFID Internet Radio
tars.vanhoof

Hello fellow makers,

This Instructable describes how I made an RFID internet radio for my kids. They like to listen to music but since they're too young to start Spotify and cast to the TV themselves, I decided to make an easy and hopefully fun interface for them. This was a Covid-19 project so I took my time.

The player is built with a Raspberry Pi, a HiFi module and an RFID module. The tags are put in a base on which wooden puppets are glued which are easily identifiable for the kids as containing a certain playlist. I also designed and built a nice enclosure because it will be visible in our living room and therefore it has to look good.

I made a lot of personal choices during the development but because it's built around a Raspberry pi it's very customizable. I'll try to describe my progress and all the problems I encountered as detailed as possible.

I've already got a few upgrades in mind such as removing the (need for) buttons to make it even simpler, I'd like even better full-range speakers, playlist programming via a smartphone, maybe in the long run easier set-up of WiFi and Spotify for non-Raspberry-savvy family members...

I'd love to see what others make of it! Can you guess which song the puppet on top is for?

Build Your Own (metalworking) Lathe - Part I
corradini

You can make an entire machine shop worth of power machine tools, using basic hardware store/home center supplies and scrap metal. Melt aluminum in a metal-pail furnace, using sand, charcoal, and a clay flowerpot! Cast sophisticated metal tool parts using supplies from a gardening shop and modified kitty litter! End up with a full machine-shop lathe ("the only tool capable of making any OTHER machine-shop tool, including itself!") for just the cost of your time, some scrap steel and aluminum, and a motor!

Customizing Indoor Wireless Coverage via 3D-Fabricated Reflectors
Abstract

Judicious control of indoor wireless coverage is crucial in built environments. It enhances signal reception, reduces harmful interference, and raises the barrier for malicious attackers. Existing methods are either costly, vulnerable to attacks, or hard to configure. We present a low-cost, secure, and easy-to-configure approach that uses an easily-accessible, 3D-fabricated reflector to customize wireless coverage. With input on coarse-grained environment setting and preferred coverage (e.g., areas with signals to be strengthened or weakened), the system computes an optimized reflector shape tailored to the given environment. The user simply 3D prints the reflector and places it around a Wi-Fi access point to realize the target coverage. We conduct experiments to examine the efficacy and limits of optimized reflectors in different indoor settings. Results show that optimized reflectors coexist with a variety of Wi-Fi APs and correctly weaken or enhance signals in target areas by up to 10 or 6 dB, resulting to throughput changes by up to -63.3% or 55.1%.

BRRRRR!
Por isso, é melhor terem este catrapázio no Quintal ou num canto na casa, porque um Rocket Stove;

-Funciona com galhos, cartão, e etc;
-Gasta muito mpouco combustível porque o aproveita até às cinzas;

Build Your Own Inexpensive Powerbank with 3D Printing
Matthew Mensley

Instructables user Nematic! details how to make your own portable powerbank from laptop cells, 3D printing and a little electronics savvy.
We’ve all experienced that unique feeling of helplessness and anguish that only a dead cellphone battery can bring. Cut off from the internet and contact with others it becomes impossible to navigate, and what the heck are you supposed to do while sitting around waiting for the bus/train/plane. It sucks.
Fortunately there’s no shortage of inexpensive power banks knocking around to keep you topped up with juice on your travels. But for the thrifty with time to kill and a handful of old laptop batteries lying around (a common scenario, we know) there’s an alternative.
In a short-and-sweet post over on Instructables, user Nematic! shows us how with nothing more than a few tools (3D printer, soldering iron and glue gun), a cheap powerbank module and some 18650 cells, you can make your own smartphone powerbank lickety-split.

Papercrete!

Everything You Need To Know About Papercrete

Expert Prepper

For all those who aren’t much familiar with it, Papercrete, in essence, is a type of fibrous cement (cement with a certain proportion of fiber in it). Because of its unique composition, papercrete is lightweight and strong, hence a perfect fit for a multitude of tasks. But more on that later – let’s first begin with,
The Ingredients in Papercrete

The ingredients that make papercrete can vary wildly based on what it’ll be used for. From cotton, wool and hemp to paper (wood fiber), flax and jute, different fibers can be used to make papercrete. For example, papercretes for building the walls of a house are usually composed of basic formula of cement and plastic. However, for any load bearing platforms or walls, a small amount of sand can boost compressive strength even further.

The addition of fiber to the cement results in a much stronger mixture – more or less the same way as the addition of fiber fibers boost the strength of fiberglass.

Researchers create world's first 3D-printed jet engines

Ben Coxworth

Working with colleagues from Deakin University and CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), researchers from Australia's Monash University have created the world's first 3D-printed jet engine. While they were at it, they created the world's second one, too. One of them is currently on display at the International Air Show in Avalon, Australia, while the other can be seen at the headquarters of French aerospace company Microturbo, in Toulouse.

Cellular Connectivity Comes to Microcontrollers With The Spark Electron

David Scheltema

Meet Electron from Spark, the new board that puts GSM cellular connectivity directly on the microcontroller.
With its onboard cellular antenna, this diminutive board will offer a huge range of deployment options and alleviate the hassle of using a custom cellular breakout board with your micro controller projects. They’re offering two versions, with either 2G or 3G connectivity.
It thankfully also reduces the frustration of dealing with mobile carriers — more on that in a moment.

What is your the minimum kit to survive? Maybe a big knife and reliable lighter? We found one more thing - carbon fiber tape.
Using one piece of carbon tape you can make:
1. Water filter
2. Gas-mask
3. Torch
4. Oil lamp or stove
5. Care of open wounds and burns
6. Fiery sign

How to Solder Without Electricity (or a Soldering Iron)
DIY Hacks and How Tos

Soldering is a valuable skill. There are a lot of situations where the ability to repair or modify electronics can really save the day. But most people don't carry a soldering iron around with them. And even if you did have a soldering iron, there is a good chance that you might not have access to electricity.
So today I am going to show you how to solder using random objects that you might find lying around (and a little bit of solder).

High Performance Grappling Hook
Mrballeng

We carry a lot of different things. Sometimes we drop them. Instead of leaving your everyday carry items out of reach, get your grappling hook!
This is the sequel to the original grappling hook I posted. The first one worked great but didn't stow so well. Here's what I'm working on now. It's a cross between a mechanical claw and grappling hook. When it touches down, gravity pushes the jaws open. Lifting it closes the jaws around your prize. Now I feel better about all the quarters I've lost in claw machines.
This is funding on Kickstarter right now of you'd like check it out. And for all you DIY folks, once the project closes I'll attach the file in step 4.

Bringing Cellular Networking Connectivity to Raspberry Pi and Arduino

Designspark Magazine

California-based company that has come up with the concept of a tiny cellular development board that provides the opportunity to developers to add worldwide wireless coverage. Initially launched back in August via the Kickstarter crowd-funding programme, the CELLv1.0 enables worldwide wireless Internet access for projects using Arduino and Raspberry Pi platforms. Although Bluetooth and WIFI offer high-speed data transfer, relatively speaking, there are clear limitations in terms of distance, operating over a few meters or a few tens of metres; whereas cellular enables significantly greater range and is ideal for ‘small data’ projects that need to operate over distances such as a few streets or a town or even a country away.

Meuble à langer modulable
mokozore

DIY cat tent
jessyratfink
I kept seeing photos of cat tents on Pinterest and being shared on Facebook, but none of them had good instructions! I decided to make a cat tent for Luna and document it so you guys could make one too. :D
This cat tent is super easy to make - you really just need a t-shirt, some wire hangers and a piece of cardboard. As a bonus, it really only takes five minutes, so if your cat ignores it you didn't put too much effort in. ;)

Fix a car bumper dent with some easy DIY

Allison Blackburn

If you have ever had a dent on your car bumper you will know how maddening it is, more so if it wasn’t your own fault. It’s bad enough if you prang the bumper but if you park in what you think is a safe spot and then return to the car to find your bumper messed up, it’s annoying to say the least. In some cases the dent may not be as bad as it first looks, however it looks unsightly and you will want to get it fixed. The downside is that taking it to a mechanic will cost you a pretty penny and of course it can take time to get the car booked in, meanwhile you have to drive around in a car with a crunched bumper. Well not anymore as you can fix a car bumper dent with easy DIY.

At some point most tinkerers and makers have to take the plunge into the real world - the world of suits and dividends and business cards. Without going completely "American Psycho" on your asses: business cards are important. In many ways they are our keys to the business world; the first impression making a massive impact, and potentially the difference between eating a Burger King in front of your computer and getting taken to a French restaurant for a business meeting.

DIY Phone Controlled Rover (Fast & Agile - FPV Drone)
ASCAS
Let's build a Bluetooth/ WiFi controlled FPV Drone! RoverBot is a highly educational Arduino based ATV-drone. It's simple to make, easy to program and is a great starter project for hobbyists! The bot is very fast and agile, not to mention of it carrying two "29,000 rpm" motors! It can surely outrun humans regardless of the terrain you're on!

This RoverBot is a soft prototype. My next agenda is to make v2.0 water resistant, shockproof and dirt-proof. The next one would probably carry metal-gearboxes and long range TX RX modules.
