Researchers Make Robots Out of Paper
A team of researchers from the University of Illinois Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering has made a pair of crawling robots, Peri and Poly, out of little more than a sheet of paper, a few 3D printed parts, and a handful of screws.
The researchers used origami paper folding to create cheap robots that move like earthworms.
Poly is 51 mm wide and uses a pair of origami towers that expand and contract when twisted to make the worm robot crawl forward. The robot has directional feet made of hard plastic and rubber. The 3D-printed toes allow the robot to slide forward while the rubber heal stops it from backsliding. This particular example of bio-mimicry was inspired by the setae on earthworms.
Peri is more than twice the size, and fully mobile. Peri is 106 mm wide and runs on batteries unlike the Poly, which is tethered to the power source. Peri also uses on-board controllers to navigate.

You need this!

The Problem

Over 1.2 billion people globally have no access to electricity and millions more have an unreliable supply. Instead they use dangerous, polluting and expensive kerosene lamps for light.
A typical kerosene lamp is made by taking an empty bottle or tin can, putting a wick in the middle, filling it with fuel and lighting. Using kerosene for lighting is extremely inefficient, dangerous and expensive, and it has extensive health and environmental drawbacks.

How It Works
Combining kinetic and potential energy, GravityLight works by connecting an elevated weight — filled with rocks or sand — to a pulley system that slowly powers a generator as the weight falls to the ground.

Electromagnetic Fidget Spinner Accelerator
tanner_tech
Fidget Spinners are little plastic toys with a bearing in the center. They are fun for a little bit, but get boring after a while due to their slow spinning speeds. There are ways to make them spin faster, but these methods involve using a bulky air compressor or an expensive can of compressed air. Luckily, I have found a cheap way to accelerate these fidget spinners to extremely high speeds with the power of electromagnetism. You can even hold the spinner in your hand while you accelerate it! I have clocked a spinner that is spinning with this accelerator at speeds up to 1440 RPM, that is fast. You can build this accelerator too, it is really cheap and really simple to build.

Melhorar, Inovando!
Gosto, sobretudo, do Desengavetador de Projectos...

Quem somos

Build Your Own Toys with ThinkFun’s Maker Studo
Kathy Ceceri
As I mentioned yesterday, the big theme of this year’s Toy Fair in New York is “joining the maker movement.” But to qualify as a genuine maker toy, a plaything should meet some basic criteria. One new series of kits that fits my definition of a maker toy is the Maker Studio Construction Sets from ThinkFun. The building sets are a departure for ThinkFun, which is better known for their logic games like Robot Turtles and Rush Hour, but completely in keeping with their theme of brain-building and hands-on fun. Designed by engineers David Yakos and Parker Thomas, the three Maker Studio sets — there are Gears, Propellers, and Winches — include struts, connectors, and moveable parts like wheels. It’s up the user to find a suitable body, and the sets encourage kids to look for recycled containers and materials to build out their projects, like the mac-and-cheese box racecar chassis.

threshold
SHORT DESCRIPTION
Think of the threshold as a toll booth for signal passing through your circuit. The threshold compares the incoming voltage coming from the bit snapped before it against the voltage amount you’ve set by the threshold knob. If the incoming voltage value is greater than the selected voltage, the threshold will allow the signal to pass and activate any bits (lights, motors, etc…) following it. If not, then nothing will be activated. Use it to make any sensor module into a trigger module!

Olive oil ingredient leads cancer cells to their death
Nick Lavars

An ingredient found in extra-virgin olive oil called oleocanthal has been known as a compound capable of killing a variety of human cancer cells, but how this process actually played out was not understood. Now, a team of researchers has uncovered not only how oleocanthal destroys cancer cells, but that it is able to do so while leaving healthy cells unharmed.
Paul Breslin, a professor of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University, had thought that oleocanthal killed the cancer cells by targeting a key protein in cancer cells that triggers apoptosis, a process that sees dangerous or damaged cells self-destruct by upsetting the balance of ions in the cell membranes. In investigating this theory, he teamed up with David Foster and Onica LeGendre, two cancer biologists from New York City's Hunter College to more closely examine the process.

DIY Sand Blaster $50 in an hour
ImakeTV

No long intro, get started and save $200 and 8 hours of assembly on the big red one you keep seeing.

It's a media blaster to prep your metal for welding or powder coating, prep your beer glass for awesomeness, remove unsightly body hair painfully, feel like you are at a public beach, and tear stuff up.

OK Go Collaboration – Another Set of Objects

Toaster synths are a thing.

Today we are happy to share the results of a very fun collaboration with the band OK Go. We first started chatting around the time the Synth Kit was released in the hopes of finding a project to collaborate on. Unlike most rock bands, OK Go have the additional quality of having excellent visual creativity as well as an interest in emerging technology. On top of that, they have been involved in maker initiatives and DIY projects over the years.
In preparation for their most recent album release, “Hungry Ghosts,” the band put together a Pledge Music campaign to share their process and raise money by providing unique experiences for fans. This ranged from personal art critiques to disposable cameras filled with tour photos to a customized synthesizer. That’s where we came in.

Power Stacker: Stackable USB Rechargeable Battery System
Solarcycle

Power Stacker is a portable, modular, USB rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Stack them together for power hungry projects or separate them for smaller projects with this modular system. The Gerber, BOM, and .STL files are available below.

Power Stacker does what other USB rechargeable batteries have failed to do, and that's the ability to combine together for increased battery capacity or separate in to many small batteries for smaller projects. You can literally use the same Power Stacker batteries for many years across many applications!

Creating a 3D Printable Circuit Board for a Practical Application

Scott J Grunewald

We’re not to the point where a completely 3D printable circuit board is feasible – although we’re getting close – but that doesn’t mean that 3D printing can’t save makers and home builders plenty of time by allowing for the creation of custom shaped boards. Over on YouMagine, user JonnyBischof created a customized 3D printed circuit board (with enclosure) for his Ultimaker Heated Bed MosFET Relay Hack.

About Us

AB Electronics UK was founded in 2012 by brothers Andrew and Brian Dorey who have had a keen interest in the electronics hobbyist market for many years.
Andrew has qualifications in electronic servicing and repairs and has worked in the past for companies repairing home entertainment items before moving into the graphical design market.
Brian spent his first working years repairing white goods and household electrical items before moving into the retail market and then into IT.
Since 1998 we have run a successful web development agency and have continued our love of electronics and hardware modifications with many projects for the home and play, many of which are shown on the project blog at www.briandorey.com
Over the past few years the emergence of the popular Arduino system boards and other hobby prototype boards and more recently with the Raspberry Pi microcomputer boards led to the development of a home monitoring system for our semi-off grid solar system at their home and office.
After one of the blog project posts was featured on the popular Hackaday website, lots of enquiries of where to buy the prototype boards started to flood in and so we decided it was time to start to sell these boards and other related products on our own shop.
We have several other circuit boards currently under development and we will be adding these to the shop once our initial test production runs and testing are completed.

    How to make molds
    rlciavar

This Instructable is an introduction to the basics of mold making for people interested in mold making with little to no knowledge on the subject.

It will walk you through some important vocabulary, break down the major mold types and help you select the correct mold for your project.

    3D Printed DC Motor
    pitrack

I designed and 3D printed a Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor, and used an Arduino to control the motor. All parts of the motor, excluding magnets, solenoid wrapping wire, and hall effect sensors, were printed with a Makerbot Replicator 2. The video shows the completed working motor.

Cloud Sleeper: The Arduino Big Ben Wake Up Call
    Doktor Bob
This project shows how to use a new littleBits cloud Bit to control an Arduino Bit, to hack the best of both worlds for light and heavy sleepers. Many folks use white noise for relaxing and helping sleep by masking background sounds, and Web retailers sell specialized sound generators for those purposes. At the other end of the night, sound sleepers often need a wake up call to get them going for the day. This circuit uses a random (noise) module with mix and speaker modules from the Synth Kit, together with cloud, Arduino at Heart, and LED modules to handle both needs.

Grain Sack That Doubles as a Solar Powered Water Purifier for the Third World
    Lara Lopes

The container uses Solar Water Disinfectant Process (SODIS) technology to kill organisms in the contaminated liquid through thermal treatment and UV-A-radiation, which easily penetrates the PVC easily. An internal filter is able to remove all microorganisms bigger than 5 nanometers. To get an idea of this filter’s efficiency, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis is 200 nanometers in size.

     Guide to Professional 3D Printers
There are over 100 industry-grade 3D printer models currently on the market. These printers are large, commercial 3D printing machines intended for professional use. At Sculpteo we exclusively uses professional 3D printers.
We’ve put together a guide to these industrial 3D printers based on a selection of printers from each manufacturer that best represents the range of options out there — from price to materials to build size.
We hope this guide will help you determine the best 3D printer for your business needs. And don’t forget, you don’t have to buy your own printer to have access to professional quality 3D printing. Sculpteo offers an online 3D printing service using a variety of the printers listed in this guide.
Note on pricing: Because commercial 3D printers are sold through third-party, licensed resellers, there is not a standard retail price for each printer. Prices are only available via a quote from one of these resellers. We have recorded the pricing below based either on a quote from a reseller that asked to stay anonymous or from another online source (with a link).
The guide is organized by printer technology. For details explaining each process, check out The Different Technologies Behind 3D Printing.

    Space: The Final (Maker) Frontier

    Andrew Back

A look at three relatively low cost routes to getting your electronics project into space.
There was a time — not that very long ago — when if you wanted to get a functional piece of electronics into space it took an obscene amount of money and a few hundred tonnes of volatile rocket fuel. Suffice to say that, unless you were part of a national space programme, a global telecoms company or an evil supervillain, you were probably out of luck.
Thanks to ever smaller and lower cost technologies, coupled with a burning desire to get in on the action and a healthy dose of inventiveness, this is all changing — and at a somewhat rapid pace. This post takes a look at just a few of the options available for getting your project into space.

    Vejam e MARAVILHEM-SE!

Spraying natural fibers to build cotton-candy surfaces

    Zoe Romano

During Fab10- Fab Festival in Barcelona I met Jin Shihui who introduced me to CandyProject, a research project exploring the process of spraying natural fiber to create a non-woven textile that can be used to produce anything from building components to ornamental artifacts.
By means of air pressure we separate the fibers from a roving allowing them to self-organize and reassemble due to the surface tension caused by a fine mist of adhesive. This creates a controlled fibrous aggregation producing an emergent morphospace encompassing the initial substructure.
The robot Jin is holding in her hands in the picture above uses air pressure to separate fibers into individual strands. While the fibers are still separated they are embedded with an adhesive spray and all parameters are controlled within the robot  with an Arduino Uno:
