3 Impressoras 3D DIY!

Building a 3D Printer
Core3D

I recently presented 4 3D printers at the Maker Faire Milwaukee. All 4 were designed and built by me. I'll share the links to 3 of the instructables that explain how to build them. This instructable however, is going to take a more general look at what to expect when building a 3D printer.
One repeating question I get at shows is, how much it costs to build a 3D printer. The answer depends on what you're building but, of all my printers the minimum is about $400.
The follow up question is, why you would pay that kind of money for parts, if you can buy a 3D Printer for less than that. Good question and here's my answer to that:
You only would build a 3D printer if you want to experience the process of building a printer. Yes, it can be more expensive (I won't pass judgement on the quality of the cheaper, ready made products) but think of the process of building a printer as a learning experience. You are paying for the experience and out of it you happen get a working project.
One of the most remarkable things about building a 3D printer is that you'll amaze yourself (and can take great pride in) at what you are capable of.
I built (and to some extend) designed my first printer 4 years ago without an ounce of experience in robotics and electronics.
A fair warning: Building a 3D printer is like getting a Tattoo; it will never end with one.

Making of a DIY Flightcase
TangLB

I have some sound equipment and I needed some kind of box to store my lights and various accessories.
I realized a few months ago a "DJ suitcase" a kind of flight case, with mixer and light dispatching (picture at the end of this project), I decided to detail you the steps of the realization of this new "case".

https://www.instructables.com/id/Making-of-a-DIY-Flightcase/

DIY IRONLESS LINEAR SERVO-MOTOR
Vulcaman

Hi,
in this Instructable I want to show you, how to build your own Linear-Servo-Motor for Linear-Movement-Applications.
But at first the story about this Instructable:
When I visited one of the biggest trade faires for Automation here in Germany, I saw a lot of Linear-Motors in Industry Applications. It was quite astonishing how fast these Motors can move with an incredible precision.
I thought it would be really cool, if I could addapt these kind of motor in a Laser or 3D-Printer Application. Sadly these Motors are very expensive (>1000€ per piece). So buying a Linear-Motor is not an option anymore. But after some research I thought it will be possible to build my own Linear-Motor. Theoretecly a Linear-Servo-Motor is just a three phase sychronous motor with a closed loop position feedback. So I started to create CAD-Drawings and Electronics. After one month of research and improvements I can say, I have built my own working Ironless Linear-Servo-Motor. However there are some points which need to be improved especially in the position regulation. This project helped me a lot to understand, how a Linear-Motor works in general, and how to programm a closed-loop controller for it.

https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-IRONLESS-LINEAR-SERVO-MOTOR/

LED 3D Printer Bed Leveling Tool
TechKiwiGadgets

Being new to 3D printing I found leveling the print bed a challenge, particularly on printers without auto bed leveling. This 3D Printer Bed Leveling Tool uses a Pulse Induction Metal Detection Sensor and a LED Bar Graph to show the relative distance from the Print Head to the hotbed. This is an independent add-on that does not require any code changes to printer firmware or wiring. It is easy to quickly attach to check and tune bed levels then remove.

Easy Tesla Coil!
DrewPaulDesigns

Wireless electricity is here! From wirelessly powered lighting to wireless chargers and even wireless smart homes, wireless transmission of power is an emerging technology with innumerable applications.
A light bulb powered with no wires? A cell phone charger that doesn't need to be plugged in? A home with no plugs, no wires and everything just 'works'? It's not magic, it's no mystery, it's science!
The invention of wireless power transmission is typically attributed to 20th century inventor Nikola Tesla, though the technology may have been in use much earlier. Since then, however, improved designs and modern components make this an easy DIY project anyone can do with just a few simple parts!

https://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Tesla-Coil/

Injection Molding Machine for under $100 in parts using less than $700 worth of machinery!
Wildman Tech

Here I build an injection molding machine for less than $100 in raw materials! WARNING! I use some tools in this video that cost me less than $700, so don't go into hysterics about a multi-million dollar machine shop. See me build the same parts with nothing but a hand drill here....

Bladeless Drone: First Flight
Stefano Rivellini

With 4 ducted fans, and some carbon fiber, I built a bladeless drone that I think is one of safest in the world. It uses 4, 90mm ducted fan propulsion units buried deep inside what I call a “bent tube” propulsor. The fifth “leg” is a parachute can. Hopefully I will never need it. With some help from my dad, we built the entire airframe primarily out of carbon fiber and some balsa wood. I bought all the electronics on line and was able to design the drone so that it would operate with a standard DJI multi rotor flight controller even though it doesn’t have vertically oriented propellers. With its top mesh installed its virtually impossible to get fingers and objects in contact with the blades. I submitted a patent application for my invention. I think a drone like this could have industrial applications where a drone needs to operate close to people, objects, and in confined spaces to do inspection and other activities.

oneTesla shrinks its singing Tesla coil kit to palm-friendly proportions

Paul Ridden
The folks who successfully crowdfunded a DIY singing Tesla coil kit last year have taken to Kickstarter again to bring a smaller version into production. Like its older and bigger brother, the tinyTesla shoots out bolts of artificial lightning while playing MIDI music using the electricity itself. It looks like that polyphonic MIDI version of Danger High Voltage by Electric Six might just come in handy after all.

Magnetic propeller balancerDanijel0frk
So you have spent a lot of money on your diy quadcopter(or any multirotor) and refuse to give any more, but you still need a propeller balancer. Balanced propeller is very if not the most important thing for multirotors.
Guess what, you can make your own, from old computer components.
If you happend to work in ICT company, there is always a lot of that stuff around. Besides broken hardware, some tools may also come handy. Let's begin with stuff you are going to need.

New Feddz E-Bike: Lifestyle Cruiser With Baggage Storage
Alyn Wallace
Germany based company Emo Bike GmbH have recently designed, built and showcased their new offering - the Feddz. While traditional motorcycles don’t really offer much in the way of storage, the Feddz offers 23 litres of space where you would expect to find a fuel tank and engine. This is because the Feddz is an E-Bike, powered by Lithiom batteries and an electric motor and the company are pushing the new technology with the slogan,“Let’s Feddz the city.”

Turbinas Tesla, Desktop Gremlins, Ímanes de Aquário, Nessie em papel... E a Impressão 3D resolve!

Turbinas Tesla!

Faux Metal Tesla Turbine

This instructable is a continuation of a post from 2011 (http://www.instructables.com/id/Machining-a-Mini-Tesla-Turbine-from-Cardboard/). The Cardboard Tesla Turbine (CTT) was based on a Popular Mechanics article describing the construction of a steam-powered, metal turbine that was published nearly 50 years ago. A year later, I've added spray painting and detailing tips as well as some disappointing results when attempting to power the CTT using a cartridge of compressed CO2. I chose colors to create the appearance of precision machinery crafted from brass, copper and titanium alloy. The rotor discs were painted to resemble a carbon fiber composite of high tensile strength.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Faux-Metal-Tesla-Turbine/

Dear Loyal Followers:

Submit-your-own-Friendlins? Special request download-of-the-month? More free papercraft of your favorite games, movies and books?

Yes, these are all things you ask me to do every day. And yes, these are all plans I have in the works for the BIGGER and BETTER www.DesktopGremlins.com!

But it all starts with the funding of a book.

UPDATE: We are at the half-way point in the Kickstarter campaign promoting my first premium papercraft art book, Desktop Gremlins Vol. 1. As you've probably already heard me say, Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing crowd-funding service that works through Amazon payments. If we don't hit the goal, no one is charged anything ... but my campaign fails along with it.

Right now we are 41% So how do we get to 100%? (It's not as hard as you think.)
http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=644c9563d534a336433a1d842&id=0b02b51783&e=bcecf0391e

Aquarium Magnets

Neodymium magnets are used in aquariums for their ability to attract to one another through aquarium walls, without requiring a hole in the wall.  Here are some of the answers to the questions we most commonly receive about using powerful magnets in an aquarium.
Most setups consist of two magnets attracting towards one another, with one inside the tank walls and one on the outside.  We’ll consider this setup for most of the discussion below.

Will magnets work underwater?

Yes, magnets attract to one another underwater.  The biggest concern with using neodymium magnets underwater is corrosion.  In the presence of moisture, neodymium magnets can rust about as fast as a piece of raw iron.  While the nickel plating does slow this down, the nickel eventually loses the battle.
Do not put unprotected magnets into your aquarium!  Corroding, rusting magnets may harm aquatic life.
The best strategy is to seal off the magnet somehow from the water.  While some of our customers seal off our magnets themselves, either potting them in place or encasing them within their own assembly, our Plastic Coated Magnets are a great off-the-shelf solution.
Plastic Coated Magnets have a layer of injection molded plastic that surrounds them, providing a waterproof seal.  Most of these magnets use a 1/32” thick layer of polypropylene plastic.

3D-Printed Adapter Rescues Threatened iPhone Dock

Joseph Flaherty

The Elevation Dock for the iPhone is a classic Kickstarter story. An indie designer develops a better mouse trap, raises $1.4 million, and of course, delivers the product to backers, very, very late. These delays created a serious problem when they overlapped with Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 5 and its new Lightning connector.
London-based software engineer and 3D-printer enthusiast Mike Hellers sums up the situation: “I actually received mine the day before I received the iPhone 5. Couldn’t have been worse, really, as it meant that I used the dock with the 30-pin connector for exactly one day before it became a useless paperweight.”

Unlike most backers, Hellers saw the incompatibility between his gadgets as a challenge instead of an inconvenience. He opened up Tinkercad, a web-based 3D-modeling program, fired up his MakerBot, and got busy designing an adapter. He says, “Designing the adapter was fairly straightforward and quick. I printed four or five iterations … since it is such a small piece. The printing of those revisions was very quick, only a couple of minutes each time.” He posted his design to Thingiverse, set up a Shapeways shop for those without access to a 3D printer, and helped 12,521 downloaders bring their products back to life.

Warp Drive, Tesla, e Papercraft

Warp Drive!

Warp drive looks more promising than ever in recent NASA studies

Brian Dodson

"Interstellar travel may still be in its infancy, but adulthood is fast approaching, and our descendants will someday see childhood's end." The Starflight Handbook

The first steps towards interstellar travel have been taken, but the stars are very far away. Voyager 1 is about 17 light-hours distant from Earth and is traveling with a velocity of 0.006 percent of light speed, meaning it will take about 17,000 years to travel one light-year. Fortunately, the elusive "warp drive" now appears to be evolving past difficulties with new theoretical advances and a NASA test rig under development to measure artificially generated warping of space-time.
The warp drive broke away from being a wholly fictional concept in 1994, when physicist Miguel Alcubierre suggested that faster-than-light (FTL) travel was possible if you remained still on a flat piece of spacetime inside a warp bubble that was made to move at superluminal velocity. Rather like a magic carpet. The main idea here is that, although no material objects can travel faster than light, there is no known upper speed to the ability of spacetime itself to expand and contract. The only real hint we have is that the minimum velocity of spacetime expansion during the period of cosmological inflation was about 30 million billion times the speed of light.

Building a Tesla Coil In 9 Easy Steps!

Beachley

With Halloween right around the corner, there's no better time to build your very own Tesla Coil!

Over the past Summer, I built two Tesla Coils. The first one didn't work, so I started building a second one. This instructable will outline the steps I took.

Diamond Window Cube (Modular Origami)

sherrycayheyhey

Follow these steps to make your very own Diamond Window Cube.

I'm not sure about the origin of these types of cubes (please share if you do) or their real name. I've seen many variations of this but they all involve really weird folding to show the white side of the paper. I figured out how to do what I assume is the classic version of these and they turned out really cute.

I've included pictures of each step for folding the model and also numbered them according to the text I wrote so it should be clear how to make some of these for yourself. I've also labeled the pieces for the assembly step and hopefully that helps too. Happy folding!

Ideias do caraças!

A melhor, primeiro...

Global Village Construction Set
Another wildly successful Kickstarter campaign: 10 days still remaining

We first came across Marcin Jakubowski’s incredible Global Village Construction Set (GVCS) back in April, following his well-received TED presentation. The concept of GVCS is one of those super-simple, too-good-to-be-true proposals that has real potential to change so many lives.

What is it all about? Imagine a modular, DIY, low-cost, open source, high-performance platform. One that makes it easy to fabricate all of the 50 different industrial machines that it takes to build a small, sustainable civilization complete with modern comforts.

The aim of the GVCS is to lower the barriers to entry into farming, building, and manufacturing. Its a life-size lego set that can create entire economies…

Like all good farmers, Marcin and the guys from Open Source Ecology have certainly been busy.

Opening their project to the hands of the public with a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, things are looking good for the first set of prototypes that have been developed.

Click through for more information about the campaign, as well as a deeper look at the Global Village Construction Set.

earthCell batteries promise near-zero waste and better value

By Ben Coxworth

If you really want to minimize the amount of toxins that you put into the environment, use rechargeable batteries. Disposable and rechargeable batteries can contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, and with an estimated 3 billion batteries a year being discarded in the U.S. alone, the sometimes small amounts in each battery can really add up. Using rechargeables greatly reduces the number of batteries entering landfills, but many people don't bother buying them, or the chargers that they require. That's where earthCell batteries come in. They can be used like disposables, except that users send them away for for recharging or recycling when they're dead.

earthCells are low self-discharge nickel metal hydride (LSD NiMH) batteries, which among other things are claimed to have a much longer shelf life than regular NiMH batteries, and longer run times than alkalines. When a customer's earthCells do expire, they put them in a prepaid mailer. Once that mailer is full, the customer sends it off to the company.

Video: A Steerable Remote 'Telexistence' Robot that Transmits Sight, Sound, and Touch to the Operator

By Clay Dillow

Keio University researchers are taking telepresence to the next logical level with a new “telexistence” robot called TELESAR V, a robotic platform that doesn’t just transport the user's eyes to another location, but also his or her ears and hands as well. The idea is to break through the limitations of time and space to allow a user to actually feel like he or she is present elsewhere via a remotely operated robot that returns three sensory stimuli back to the user.

Using a head-mounted 3-D visual display, an audio system that streams sound to the user, and tactile gloves that allow the user to feel the shapes and temperatures of objects--currently the robots force vector and temp sensors can accurately relay textures as fine as the unevenness on the surface of a Lego block--the user can manipulate the robot remotely and feel what the robot feels. The designers are looking for a true avatar sensation, one that makes the user really feel that he or she is inhabiting the place of the robot.

Student-designed bicycle device designed to save lives

By Ben Coxworth

Many people are afraid of riding their bicycles on busy roads full of motorized vehicles, and it's easy to understand why. Not only are bikes slower and offer less protection than cars, but they can also be more difficult for drivers to notice. A device invented by a British design student, however, could help level the playing field a little. It's called BLAZE, and it alerts drivers to the presence of a cyclist by projecting a laser image onto the road in front of the bicycle.
"Eighty per cent of cycle accidents occur when bicycles travel straight ahead and a vehicle maneuvers into them," said Emily Brooke, a final-year Product Design student at the University of Brighton. "The most common contributory factor is 'failed to look properly' on the part of a vehicle driver. The evidence shows the bike simply is not seen on city streets."
