$99 palm-sized PocketMaker 3D printer launches on Indiegogo
While 3D printers do honestly come in all shapes and sizes, the vast majority of models feature roughly the same desktop size – with size differences usually being negligible. While the dream is always to go bigger and wider to facilitate larger prints and more ambitious projects, there’s a lot to be said for downsizing as well. Aside from the obvious benefit of making your 3D printer extremely portable, it also means 3D printing smaller, more efficient objects and optimally using your build volume. Why be tempted to go bigger if smaller means becoming more efficient? If this sounds appealing, then the palm-sized PocketMaker might be something for you.

3D Printed 1:10 OpenRC Formula 1 car
Daniel Norée
This is the OpenR/C Formula 1 car. It´s the third generation 3D printed OpenR/C car and this time around focus is on simplicity! You can print everything in PLA except the tires which are done in NinjaFlex! Of course you can print it in any material you like but for those that want to print a car but only have PLA at hand, this is the project for you!
This guide explains how to assemble the OpenRC F1 car. If you want to add electronics to make it radiocontrolled another step will be added later.

Raspberry Pi Surveillance Rover (Land Drone)
DavidDrones
Ever wanted to have a surveillance drone to monitor your surroundings? Of course you have!
Using a Raspberry Pi for the on-board logic, this compact, mobile computer, will create a local port that streams a video in real-time while simultaneously creating Bluetooth sockets to read values sent by a custom android app. The app syncs with the drone and uses user input to send instructions to the drone instantly. This project is fairly difficult to make from scratch, so hopefully the following will make life easier and provide some insight for drone enthusiasts like myself. All the software used for this project is provided. The code used was originally written by myself, but a few lines might have come from other sources. Feel free to modify and share the code to your liking. Please use the information provided responsibly and have fun!

LOL

Power in the Apocalypse (How to build a Wood-Gasifier)
tatebullrider
In this Instructable I will be showing you the steps I used to build my Wood/Biomass Gasifier. It was really a fun project and I would encourage anyone serious about preparedness to build one. Now in case you don't know what a Gasifier is (and don't feel bad if you don't as very few people do lol), they are quite simple, let me explain. Essentially all gasification is, is a form of incomplete combustion, heat from the burning solid fuel creates gases which are unable to burn completely because of the insufficient amounts of oxygen from the available supply of air, it then filters those gasses(which is by weight: 20% hydrogen, 20% carbon monoxide, 50 to 60% nitrogen, and a little bit of methane) And you can really use any kind of Biomass(organic material) that will burn. You can even use things like paper, coal, peat, and lignite. You can then use that filtered gas to run any thing from a generator to a car. So now that you have a basic understanding of what gasification is, lets get down to the build!!!

3D Printed Molds Casting Tutorial: Complex Shapeshertzgamma
Here is a very easy technique to cast complex shapes in 3D printed molds.
By complex shapes I mean shapes that are hollow, have channels or thin walls etc. Standard techniques usually involve making a negative shape of your object in sand or other material and then pouring the casting resin inside. This method is not something easy to do in a lab and it does not provide the possibility to easily cast shapes hollow from the inside. It also lacks repeatability and consistency in the final object.
It all starts with an idea - you want to make that minion figure from Despicable Me or a copy of someone's toe (why not haha).. Follow the instructable for a simple method to produce soft silicone casts out of 3D printed molds.
The process in 3 steps:
First we create the cast
Then, we mix two silicone compounds (usually or whatever you have) and pour them into the cast - gravity takes over and replaces the air in the mold with silicone
When the silicone cures we extract it from the cast and it's done!
Issues arise when we want to cast a complex object that has many surfaces or cavities.

Skill Builder: Styrofoam Sculpting, Surfacing, and “Sugru Skinning”Jude Pullen
The modeling technique I used in my Ergo Mouse project (MAKE Volume 38) has 3 main steps: sculpting, surfacing, and Sugru skinning. But you can apply it to any creative process requiring models to explore interactions and aesthetics, quickly and at low cost.

Lego NXT Laser Engraver
Baybren

After seeing a few laser engravers on Instructables and their intricate results I decided it would be worth building my own machine to make some wooden signs and artwork. I also decided I wanted it to be easy to build but still relatively effective at engraving images and that other people would be able to build as well. Thus my goal was to make it cost-effective and simple enough that anyone with some basic electronics knowledge and materials could build it without much difficulty. Initially I was going to use Arduino and almost all 3D-printed parts, but after having some printer issues I figured Legos would make things much simpler and easier to work with, and it's turned out fairly well. It's not industrial-grade and it has some issues of its own, but it's a great way to get started with using and building custom CNC tools, and doesn't require any knowledge of Arduino or soldering.

OSVehicle’s Tabby EVO: Build This Open-Source EV in an Hour
Mike Senese
The OSVehicle team wants to revolutionize the way the world makes its transportation, and today introduces a new platform that will help bring auto building to the community and individual level.
Named Tabby EVO, the vehicle can be built in just an hour in a moderately equipped workshop. It features an 80v/15 kW electric drivetrain with a range of 87 miles and a top speed of 80 mph. It has a 93-inch wheelbase and can be configured for 2-4 passengers. Its upgraded frame and suspension help qualify it for L6e, L7e, and M1 licensing for street-legal use in Europe and the US, as well as allow it to be used for off-road purposes.

Resin Casting Tutorial - Moldmaking
seeblack
When I started to make my Umi costume, it soon became apparent that I would have to make my own custom molds. You can usually buy or find something to cast common gem shapes, but sometimes the size you need won't be commercially available. In the above pictures, all the front tabard gems, headband gems, and waist cincher gems were made from custom molds using silicone rubber from Smooth-On. (The small ovals and small circle gems were made from a Michael's resin casting tray and a generic $1 paint tray respectively.

Upgrading a CNC milling machine Part 1

stuartChilds

Compact CNC machines have been around for a long time and there are affordable and often well built units available to buy from surplus suppliers and via auction. Provided a machine is of good quality and has not been abused the hardware will likely work for many years to come.
Though the mechanical side may be serviceable it can be a different story when it comes to the software; the machines may not come with their original control computers, if they do this may not boot or may be missing the security 'dongle' for the control software. In addition there have been numerous improvements in motor drive technology in recent years.
We have a Denford Novamill 3-axis mill that came with a rusty old computer that did not boot up. From initial inspection the mill itself looked promising, leaving us with the challenge of connecting a new computer with new software to run the machine.
In this first post we will determine how our machine is wired and bring it up to date with new stepper motor drive electronics, and with a brand new embedded control computer.

Keyring Phone ChargerShakeTheFuture
In this Instructable, I made a simple keyring charger.
It can charge your phone's battery with a standard 9v battery.
If you ever travel and find that your battery is dying, just get a 9v battery and use your keyring to charge your phone.
For this project you'll need:

Car's USB charger
Micro USB to USB adapter
2x 9v batteries or battery connectors

Watch Handibot Cut 3D Chess Pieces
Nathan Hurst
The portable Shopbot CNC tool, Handibot, fits on a rotary indexer, churning out extra-large chess pieces from acrylic in the middle of Maker Faire. The environment is loud, and the shop vacs are running almost constantly, but engineer Ryan Sturmer says it’s the perfect environment to demo the tool.
“We have taken the internal electronic and software framework of our tool, and replaced it with something that is web capable, that you can access from your mobile device,” he says. “Your CNC tool will actually have an app.”
It’s targeted at Makers. Shopbot now has open-source FabMo software, a digital fabrication platform for PC, Mac, Linux, and mobile, and Sturmer hopes to see developers building apps for it.

Novelty

With its latest product, cuboro Ltd. sets foot on new terrain. Thanks to the ingenious game concept by cuboro fan Johannes Guischard, a cuboro board game for young and old is launched for the first time.

As for „cuboro tricky ways“ new and longer paths leading to various finish fields are to be found constantly. The longer a path is the more valuable it becomes. cuboro, the ingenious marble track system becomes an entertaining board game for the whole family. As for the simple game version in which tracks lead through the channels on the surface, already children from age 6 can collect many points! The full version including the tunnel functions ev

Grippy robot wheels

While trying to build a mini-sumo-robot, we found it difficult to get nice grippy wheels. So if we can't buy it, we will build it! In my research on Instructables I stumbled on the oogoo "movement"; http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Make-Your-Own-Sugru-Substitute/
I had some experience with silicon but that was not all positive; http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Watch-with-Nokia-3110-screen/
Especially the time it took the silicon to set was a real challenge for my lack of patience. I tried making a wheel with just silicon sealant but the oogoo version came out so much nicer.

PocketQube: CubeSat’s Little Brother
Bill Marshall

In April 2012 I posted a DesignSpark blog post on the launch into Earth orbit of tiny, cheap Nanosat satellites built to a standard pattern called a CubeSat. Thanks to the miniaturisation of electronics the format is one of a 10cm cube. Femtosats are even smaller: one design, called a PocketQube, is basically a 5cm cube and eight would fit inside a CubeSat. Surely a step too far?

ArduinoPhone

xiaobo__

Combining Arduino and other shield modules, we make a mobile phone named Arduino Phone. Meanwhile, we printed a shell for it with the 3D printer. Although it’s not such fine as you think, even a little bit clunky, it’s still very cool. That is the point this is a cell phone made by ourselves.

While, we can’t install Arduino Phone Apps limited by Arduino. So, if you want to play Angry Birds, then you need to do some big modifications on Arduino Phone. :)

Next, I will make a detailed explanation about the steps of making an Arduino Phone, including the hardware connection and software implementation.

Hexápodes em Enxame!
Muháháháhá!
Que Engenhocas não se maravilha com isto?

Self-assembling multi-copter demonstrates networked flight control

Francis X Govers III

Researchers at ETH Zurich have demonstrated an amazing capability for small robots to self-assemble and take to the air as a multi-rotor helicopter. Maximilian Kriegleder and Raymond Oung worked with Professor Raffaello D’Andrea at his research lab to develop the small hexagonal pods that assemble into flying rafts. The true accomplishment of this research is that there is not one robot in control – each unit in itself decides what actions to take to keep the group in the air in what's known as Distributed Flight Array.

FabLab Lisboa, concerteza!

Ford reveals new rapid prototyping and low-volume production techniques [w/video]

Jonathon Ramsey

It's called "F3T," and that stands for Ford Free-form Fabrication Technology. The process that The Blue Oval has developed means being able to sidestep the weeks-long process of tool-and-die making when engineers want to construct a new part, allowing them to fabricate a three-dimensional part from a two-dimensional sheet of metal in just hours.

Turn An Electric Motor Into a Pickup!

offtandiscord

Most toys/gadgets/walkmans/tape players/electronic object that needs something to move will have a motor of some kind inside it. These can be easily turned into pickups thusly...

In this demonstration I made a very basic instrument construction just to show how the pickup is used. I will talk about this in the last step. How you adapt your own version to your instrument depends entirely on your imagination!

Sugru Pot Handle Octopus

Jaz_Allen
My  friendly local hackspace were having a Sugru evening, the perfect opportunity to replace the handle that broke off a saucepan lid last year, and while I was at it give my saucepan some octopus attitude.
