Write in Braille With B.E.E! - DIY Braille Embosser

alatorre

Braille as a form of communication has always interested me greatly- so when I saw a contest about making Tools, I took it as an opportunity to develop an idea that I had been thinking about for the past year or so.

When researching how Braille worked and the tools that were used to generate said writing, I was surprised to see how expensive they were. It was as if there were two price ranges:

Very expensive and very precise (we are talking upwards of $2000)
Very cheap and not very precise
For Braille to be read quickly and easily, there are a series of dimensions one must follow (such as the distance between bumps, from the edge of the paper etc.). As such, I thought that a tool that would be very useful would be one that was cheap and even Open Source, whilst also capable of stimulating the interaction between the blind and those who aren't.

With that in mind, our team developed B.E.E (which stands for Braille Embossing Experience).

Our goal was to create a tool for embossing which could be made at home, would cost less than $5 to make, and could be carried inside a backpack without disrupting any usual movements.

This Instructable will detail not only the way to construct your own B.E.E unit, but also all the design process and work that it took to arrive to where to product is today.

Wooden LEGO Duck

BrittLiv

I have been obsessed with LEGO ever since I can remember. Those small plastic building blocks were definitely one of my favorite toys as a kid and I still buy LEGO sets from time to time, even though I am in my thirties now (I have also written three Instructables that have to do with LEGO so far).

As a new mother my son is definitely still too young for the small LEGO pieces, but he has a bunch of LEGO PRIMOS.

I have known for a few years that the LEGO company has also produced wooden toys and wanted to buy one. Sadly they are rare and most of the time really expensive. The wooden LEGO duck is by far my favorite toy of that line, but I was never able to buy it. So I finally decided to make my own. The bonus of making one myself is that I can give it to my son and not worry about its value.

The special thing about it is that when it moves it opens and closes its beak. I hope that you will have as much fun with it as I do.

Grande Inciciativa, grande Adolescente, grande Inventor!

Fittle - helping blind children learn through touch

Fittle is an accessible learning toolset for visually challenged kids to learn words and their shapes through a playful puzzle.

March 2014 is going to be the lucky month when we ship out the complete Fittle Sets (words/shapes from A-Z) to blind schools, teachers, and parents all over the world!
If you believe in the idea, become a part of the project by contributing, or even sharing this link with others. Even referring people could earn you goodies! :)

Fittle is a revolution in the world of education for the visually challenged. It is a one-of-its-kind word puzzle through which kids can learn new words, and learn how things are shaped. Imagine teaching a visually impaired kid that Turtle spells as T-U-R-T-L-E, and being able to let them feel the turtle in their hands, as they learn the spelling. Imagine the joy of a kid at feeling the form of an airplane in his hands, especially, after he has put together the entire airplane himself, with his very hands

Homemade Electric Kiln

Wolfgar77
I was frustrated with the price of electric burnout kilns for ceramics, metal annealing, glass enameling, and melting precious metals etc,. so I decided to build my own. Most kilns that run at these temperatures cost between $600 and $1200. With a little help from a guy at a ceramics store, I built one for about $120 (not including the power controller and pyrometer). This little electric kiln can get up to 2000 degrees F and is easy to make without any special tools besides a handheld router. I also wanted one that I could take apart and replace the element, since these are inexpensive.

Licence management – everything under one roof

Detect if costly licences are unused. Act when co-workers cannot get their work done, because there are no free licences for the software they need. Make an informed decision, if you will need more licences in the future or if you can cancel software maintenance on a few licences. And make sure, that the software is just used as contracted.
  • recognize surplus – save licence costs
  • recognize needs – avoid licence shortages
  • monitor licences – optimize licence usage
  • maintain licence agreements – prevent penalties
OpenLM shows you at a glance how your software licence pool is used.

How to make a better cross cut sled

joelav

Crosscut sleds are essential for woodworkers with traditional table saws. They make cross cutting operations a lot more accurate, a lot cleaner, and a lot safer. With a couple neat tricks, you can really expand the usefulness of this jig. Woodworking is essentially pattern making. A jig like this helps make repeatable, precision cut patterns easier.

I have quite a few sleds for different operations. The problem is they can be quite large and storing them in my garage shop is becoming a chore. I decided to create a multi-purpose sled for various cross cutting, compound miter cutting, and dado operations.

DARPA's XS-1 sets goal of space launches with one-day turnaround

David Szondy

Currently, launching satellites is an involved and expensive process. DARPA’s Experimental Spaceplane (XS-1) program hopes to make this a thing of the past, by developing a shuttle-like resuable launch system that can turn around from landing to relaunch in one day, and bring down the cost of launching by a factor of 10.
We live in a fast-paced world where international situations can change overnight. Areas that were once stable and peaceful can suddenly turn into hotbeds of war and crisis. To deal with these security threats, the United States relies, in part, on its fleet of military surveillance satellites. Unfortunately, whereas a threat can pop up suddenly, satellites can only be launched from a handful of locations, plus they require the logistics of a small war to launch, and take years and hundreds of millions of dollars to put into orbit. This makes putting assets in space on short notice a herculean task.

Teenage Honduran builds open source eye-tracking computer interface for the disabled

By Loz Blain

This unique and worthwhile project was put together by a 17-year-old electronics and programming whiz from Honduras, of all places. The Eyeboard system is a low-tech eyeball-tracking device that allows users with motor disabilities to enter text into a computer using eye gestures instead of a physical interface. This kind of system is not unique - there's plenty of eye tracking interfaces out there - but Luis Cruz has figured out a way to build the full system into a set of glasses for less than US$300, putting easier communication within reach of users in developing countries. He's also releasing the software as open source to speed up development. Personally, I spent my year as a 17-year-old in a series of heroic failures trying to impress girls with my air guitar.

An artificial cornea (prototype shown here) could restore sight to thousands starting this year

Germany’s Artificial Cornea Ready To Restore Sight To Thousands
June 2nd, 2010 by Aaron Saenz

An expansive EU project to produce an artificial cornea has found success thanks to the work of Joachim Storsberg of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in Germany. Storsberg helped develop a new version of an opthalmological polymer which the eye will bond to and still allow to function properly. The new polymer could help restore sight to thousands waiting for corneal transplants around the world. The artificial cornea has passed clinical trials and is ready to see expanded use in patients this year. Very soon those with corneal blindness may find a ready cure in the form of the new implant.

Corneal blindness affects millions around the world. According to the WHO, about 5 million cases of blindness in the world (as of 2001) were a result of corneal damage or dystrophy. We’ve seen several high-tech approaches to fighting corneal blindness including the application of embryonic stem cells to generate new tissue. For most of those affected around the world, however, corneal transplants represent the surest and most accessible treatment for their condition. A readily accessible, easily made artificial cornea is a huge boon to corneal transplants.

The 91-actuator Array That Manipulates the Liquid Mirror:  Denis Brousseau, et al.

Liquid Mirror Breakthrough Could Make State-of-the-Art Optics Cheap
By Clay Dillow

A $120 million Earth-based telescope using brand new adaptive optics just trumped Hubble's deep space image clarity three-fold, but such high tech optics aren't just reserved for high-dollar observatories. A breakthrough in deformable liquid mirror technology could drastically reduce the price associated with adaptive optics, making the best in high-tech telescopes more widely available.

Imagine a volume of reflective liquid like mercury in a bowl. Spin the bowl, and the liquid will push toward the edges, forming a concave mirror as smooth as the best mirror glass. But unlike highly specialized mirror glass, it's just a bowl of mercury. It costs next to nothing by comparison.

Writing Circuits on Graphene
A heated AFM tip can draw nanometers-wide conductive lines on graphene oxide.
By Prachi Patel
Hot wire: An AFM tip heated to over 150 °C can etch an insulating graphene oxide surface to create thin conductive nanoscale wires.
Credit: Debin Wang, Georgia Tech

Using a heated atomic force microscope tip, researchers have drawn nanoscale conductive patterns on insulating graphene oxide. This simple trick to control graphene oxide's conductivity could pave the way for etching electronic circuits into the carbon material, an important advance toward high-speed, low-power, and potentially cheaper computer processors.

Graphene, an atom-thick carbon sheet, is a promising replacement for silicon in electronic circuits, since it transports electrons much faster. IBM researchers have already made transistors, the building blocks of electronic circuits, with graphene that work 10 times faster than their silicon counterparts. But to make these transistors, researchers first have to alter the graphene's electronic properties by cutting it into thin ribbons, which are then incorporated into devices. Researchers have made these nanoribbons with lithography, with chemical solution-based processes, or by unzipping carbon nanotubes.
