Five Shot Rubber Band Shooter: New Project Launch!

Edgar the Inventor has launched his newest gun here on CNCKing.com – a Five Shot Rubber Band Shooter! Here are some pictures followed by a video of his quite astounding skills with designing really cool guns for laser cutters!

I’ve designed over 300 CNC projects and what Edgar has achieved here is a massive leap forward, it’s quite impressive seeing the evolution of his design skills!

Basic Joule Thief Flashlight

Hello welcome to my second instructable!!! Today I'm going to show you how to build a very simple joule thief flashlight. If you haven't seen my other instructable, check it out for an easier way to power this than I'm going to show you! I know this has been posted/done before, but I just figured I would post with my own twist added.
My goal here is to build this joule thief with all salvaged parts(except the LED maybe), and have it power my high power white led with a battery most people would think were dead. I will explain where I get the parts and how to build this simple but amazing gadget.
A joule thief is a self-oscillating voltage booster that is small, low-cost, and easy to build. It can use nearly all of the energy in a single-cell battery, way far below the voltage where other circuits consider the battery fully discharged (or "dead"). It was named a "Joule Thief" because the circuit is stealing energy or "joules" from the source. I think it's a very clever name.

Origami portable laser cutter slices and etches whatever, wherever
Eric Mack

When I covered MakerCon last month in New York for Gizmag, literally one of the first things I did was text a photo of the 45-lb (20 kg), tote-able laser cutter to my friend who owns a shop back home in New Mexico. As it turns out, that's exactly the type of consumer Pittsburgh startup Red Ant hopes to target with its Origami.

2014 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to inventors of blue LEDs

David Szondy

Thomas Edison may have invented the lightbulb, but he never received the Nobel Prize for it. Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano at the University of Nagoya, and Shuji Nakamura working at Nichia Chemicals in Tokushima, Japan have proven more successful, being awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for their invention of the blue LED, which is the key to modern energy-efficient lighting.

Exhibiting @ World Maker Faire New York 2014 (USA)
CNCKingdom.com News

After attending the Detroit Maker Faire a few months back, I decided I had to see what it was like on the other side of the booth and decided to become an exhibitor at the World Maker Faire New York 2014. It was quite an experience!

I cut and assembled without using any glue, my Eiffel Tower out of 3 mm hardboard (video below of all the models in the picture). I didn’t have much time to get things organized for the show so my booth did look a bit sparse but the important thing in my mind is that I made it after driving all day to get there to setup.

Magnetic Encoder Pair Kit for Micro Metal Gearmotors, 12 CPR, 2.7-18V

Add quadrature encoders to your micro metal gearmotors (extended back shaft version required) with this kit that uses a magnetic disc and hall effect sensors to provide 12 counts per revolution of the motor shaft. The sensors operate from 2.7 V to 18 V and provide digital outputs that can be connected directly to a microcontroller or other digital circuit.
Overview

This kit includes two dual-channel Hall Effect sensor boards and two 6-pole magnetic discs that can be used to add quadrature encoding to two micro metal gearmotors with extended back shafts (motors are not included with this kit). The encoder board senses the rotation of the magnetic disc and provides a resolution of 12 counts per revolution of the motor shaft when counting both edges of both channels. To compute the counts per revolution of the gearbox output shaft, multiply the gear ratio by 12.

Portugal à volta do Mundo.

Drones to take IoT to remote regions of the world

Portugal firm Quarkson has built an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of flying around the world and acting as a communications satellite.
Called SkyOrbiter LA25, the drone is being proposed as a cost-effective way of providing internet communications to remote areas of the world where building terrestrial communications networks would be impractical.
Lisbon-based Quarkson writes:
“We are building a constellation of long-endurance unmanned aerial systems also known as SkyOrbiters, capable of flying for extremely long periods of time without landing or refueling. These flying satellites can be used to bring Internet access to the two thirds of the world’s population that currently doesn’t have access to it.”

Arduino-Based Vehicle Tracker With GPS+GPRS
Cabe Atwell

Back in 2010 business marketing student Yasir Afifi found a tracking device (an Orion Guardian ST820) hidden underneath his car when he went to get his oil changed. 48-hours later the FBI came to his apartment to retrieve the device, which is understandable considering how expensive they are (around $6,000). With all the domestic spying going on by government agencies, why can’t the common citizens get in on the action as well?
Keeping in mind that you’ll probably be in a heap of legal trouble if you build one, Cooking Hacks has designed their own tracking device using an Arduino Uno as its foundation.

A Caixa Pirata!

Raspberry Pi PirateBox
talk2bruce

A PirateBox is a Linux based system built using free software for the Raspberry Pi that provides private sharing of digital content. The PirateBox creates a local WiFi network, independent from the Internet, with anonymous file sharing and chatting capabilities.

I wanted to make a PirateBox and create a cool looking case for it. I used a laser cutter to cut the pieces of the case from 1/8" thick birch plywood and painted it to look as shown in photos 1 and 2. A small Python program controls custom hardware that makes the arcs above the skull glow when the PirateBox is up and running. Another small Python program controls a push button switch that illuminates when the Raspberry Pi is powered up. When the switch is pressed, the program shuts down the Raspberry Pi preventing the problems that can occur if you just unplug a running Raspberry Pi.

Jon Cantin on the American Innovator! (video)
Jon Cantin

I filmed this a few months back with Paul Akers, CEO and founder of FastCap.com so this has been a long time coming.
There were some internet problems throughout the interview so what he recorded at his end (using webcam) just didn’t come-out after lots of tweeking around but thankfully, I also recorded the interview with my own Canon XF100 @ 1080HD and microphone so nothing was lost. I was focused on the webcam just under my video camera which is why I’m always looking down. We were very lucky that my microphone picked-up Paul’s voice coming from my laptop!
