Dan Gelbart : How to Build Stuff
Al-Hala

Dan Gelbart has an excellent and well-presented series on YouTube on machines and prototyping. It`s a short course on how to build stuff aimed at students, researchers and others who are not machinists by trade. It`s applicable to prototyping and limited production with enabling technology in 18 parts, which I’ve listed links to below. Note: the chapters were obviously shot out of sequence, as there is referral to `as we`ve seen before` when we have not. It`s not that bothersome.

What is Gensole?

How to Make a 18650 Li-ion Battery Pack!
Nematic!

18650 Li-ion cells are a great way to power Projects. Which provides a nominal voltage of 3.7V which is not sufficient for most of the application for let's say you want to power a BLDC motor with an ESC which requires 9V to start. So we need more voltage which can be achieved by connecting them in series. So in this tutorial, I will show you how you can make a 18650 Li-ion Battery Pack with a BMS circuit and all the things you need to know before you built one!

Researchers Make Robots Out of Paper
A team of researchers from the University of Illinois Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering has made a pair of crawling robots, Peri and Poly, out of little more than a sheet of paper, a few 3D printed parts, and a handful of screws.
The researchers used origami paper folding to create cheap robots that move like earthworms.
Poly is 51 mm wide and uses a pair of origami towers that expand and contract when twisted to make the worm robot crawl forward. The robot has directional feet made of hard plastic and rubber. The 3D-printed toes allow the robot to slide forward while the rubber heal stops it from backsliding. This particular example of bio-mimicry was inspired by the setae on earthworms.
Peri is more than twice the size, and fully mobile. Peri is 106 mm wide and runs on batteries unlike the Poly, which is tethered to the power source. Peri also uses on-board controllers to navigate.

The Problem

Over 1.2 billion people globally have no access to electricity and millions more have an unreliable supply. Instead they use dangerous, polluting and expensive kerosene lamps for light.
A typical kerosene lamp is made by taking an empty bottle or tin can, putting a wick in the middle, filling it with fuel and lighting. Using kerosene for lighting is extremely inefficient, dangerous and expensive, and it has extensive health and environmental drawbacks.

How It Works
Combining kinetic and potential energy, GravityLight works by connecting an elevated weight — filled with rocks or sand — to a pulley system that slowly powers a generator as the weight falls to the ground.

Electromagnetic Fidget Spinner Accelerator
tanner_tech
Fidget Spinners are little plastic toys with a bearing in the center. They are fun for a little bit, but get boring after a while due to their slow spinning speeds. There are ways to make them spin faster, but these methods involve using a bulky air compressor or an expensive can of compressed air. Luckily, I have found a cheap way to accelerate these fidget spinners to extremely high speeds with the power of electromagnetism. You can even hold the spinner in your hand while you accelerate it! I have clocked a spinner that is spinning with this accelerator at speeds up to 1440 RPM, that is fast. You can build this accelerator too, it is really cheap and really simple to build.

3D Printed Lathe
iccycold3000
First off, I am a sophomore high school student who actively participates in FTC Robotics representing Shark Beta Team #10088 and FatherBoards Team #10087. The goal of our robotics team is to learn as much as possible before graduating and going off to college. One crucial skill everybody on our teams had the desire to learn was how to manually lathe parts our self instead of sending the files for somebody else to machine them for us. This was where the idea of building my own lathe came in. As our school did not want to purchase a full-size lathe or for that matter allow students to operate a full-size lathe; the only other option was to build a miniature one myself. The major challenge of this project was that because all of our funds go straight into our robotics program and purchasing parts, the lathe had to be constructed out of existing parts in our lab, or the parts needed to be made personally (this is where the idea of 3D printing the lathe itself came into play. Another major challenge of this project was that the lathe needed to be relatively precise and accurate so that the final parts could actually be used on our robots. Those were the main challences I was faced with and I believe I did a relatively good job at solving these. If you do decide to build this you will find how percise and accurite it is despite it being 3D printed. So lets get to building!

MARAVILHA!!!
600 Watts!

600 Watt, 3d-printed, Halbach Array, Brushless DC Electric Motor
TheGoofy
This is a very powerful, 3d-printed brushless DC electric motor. It has 600 Watts, and performs with more than 80% efficiency. The main components like rotor and stator can be printed with a common FDM-printer. Magnets, copper wire, and ball-bearings are ordinary components. The magnets of the rotor are arranged as Halbach Array. The motor runs with a standard ESC widely used in different RC-applications (plane, drone, car).

Impressora Invulgar! E a Verbatim vende Filamentos, e o Gerador Whimhsurst

Plan B, an open source 3DP (powder and inkjet) 3D printer

dragonator
Plan B is an open source 3DP 3D printer. It uses binder and powder to create it´s parts. It can be built for €1000,- ($1300,-) if the parts are sourced right. It uses standard 3D printer parts and electronics, off the shelf inkjet components, 3D printed parts and a sturdy laser cut (or water cut) aluminium frame.

It has a step accuracy of up to 0.05mm and has a printing accuracy of 96DPI (coming from it's HP C6602 inkjet cartridge). The inkjet technology on Plan B is based on the inkshield. It has a printing envelope of 150mmx150mmx100mm and has a layer thickness of 0.15mm to 0.2mm. It's current speed is 60mm/s, though with better firmware this speed can easily be doubled.

It currently prints in special 3DP printing gypsum with matched binder. Additional materials are going to be investigated.

Verbatim Enters the 3D Printing Market with its New Filaments
The Engineer
Data storage giant Verbatim is using IFA Berlin running from September 5-10, 2014 to announce its entry into the fast developing 3D printing market with the availability of a top-grade range of PLA and ABS plastic filament materials.
The 3D printing process enables physical objects to be made from three-dimensional models by laying down successive layers of a material in an additive manufacturing process. The 3D printing industry is currently undergoing a massive transformation and enjoying unprecedented growth that is estimated to reach a value of $669 million (€500 million) in 2014, according to Gartner. Now, new and more technologically advanced 3D printers are increasingly being introduced that target use in homes, schools and universities, and key business and industrial applications.

Small Wimshurst generator from cardboard and CDs
Sparticles

The Wimshurst influence machine was a popular machine at the end of the 19th century to generate high voltages.
From it's development ~1883 it superseded other devices such as the "Holtz" and "Voss" machines. It was one of the first ways to generate high voltage to more or less conveniently take Röntgen pictures around the turn of the century. For example, this 1909 book on radiography: Radiography and the "X" rays in practice and theory with constructional and manipulatory details by S.R. Bottone has an interesting chapter on Wimshurst machines, how to hook them up to a Crookes tube and how to take X-ray pictures. My little Wimshurst machine should in theory be able to do the job, but it will take a very long time to get 10 good flashes. And the tiny crank is not ergonomic. And I don't have a Crookes tube.

The Art of Ancient Hands
Paul Sellers
A Chisel 1/16” slides into pine like a hot knife into butter. Mortising holes is not always for large work. Many years ago a customer brought hundreds of rosewood parts to me in a cardboard box. It was a multifaceted Chinese lantern made up of frames that housed painted glass panels. Each meeting point intersected with mitred tenons into mitred reception mortises on the adjacent stiles. The owner had missing parts by the dozen, but in the scheme and scale of things, what was missing seemed very small.

New Sony X70 - a 20 megapixel 4K-upgradable XDCAM. Our first hands-on report

Sony has this week announced a small XDCAM camcorder with an unusually high specifiation - which will be extended to 4K with a future upgrade
The world contains a lot of small, handheld camcorders. They're often especially small and hand-holdable now we're beyond the point of including a tape mechanism and the only moving part is often in the lens. Sony's new PMW-X70, therefore, enters a crowded field, and needs some genuinely interesting specifications to distinguish itself.
Perhaps the most arresting development in the X70 is the sensor – the same one-inch chip as has already been deployed in the FDR-AX100 and in at least one of Sony's compact stills cameras. This technological convergence is no great surprise, although this is the first time we've seen  the sensor married to a 4:2:2 10-bit recording system, which should be as able as anything to demonstrate the successes – and failures, if any – of the imager.

Edison offers affordable and Lego-compatible robotics education

Heidi Hoopes

Named to reflect its "inventive spirit," Edison features a host of sensors and runs on open source software. Each small bot is programmable and interacts with the world via IR transmitters and receivers, line tracking, barcode reading, playing sounds and music, and sound detection. One Edison can communicate with another over IR, with the units also able to be programmed to by controlled via TV and DVD remotes.
It’s in Edison’s open source programming tool where the micro action really happens. Edware, similar to Scratch and other graphical drag-and-drop programming languages, allows users to create programs for Edison that users can upload to the bot via their computer’s headphone jack and a cable that ships with the robots. Edware is already available for download for Windows only, though Linux and Mac versions will be provided later.

LED Nametag

As a part of the Helle Koepfe-workshop for kids we designed some nametags, such that each kid could make their own led nametag at their short visit of the FabLab Aachen. Therefore ist shouldn't be too complicated, fast to build, not too expensive, and has to be awesome... at least that were the requirements.
Only a 2032 coin cells, two bright 3mm leds and a piece of 2mm acrylic and two short pieces of wire are necessery. The clip-on could be of cource be replaced by a piece of wire, but we had a bunch of them from another project.
The one and only tool which is used is the epilog zing laser cutter of the fablab.

SpaceShipTwo to be fueled by thermoset plastic similar to nylon
David Szondy

As the still-to-be-announced date of the first commercial flight of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo approaches, more and more of the technology involved is getting nailed down. A case in point is the company's announcement that it has decided which fuel will be used in the first passenger-carrying flights of the suborbital spacecraft. The solid fuel grains that will fuel the world’s largest operational hybrid rocket will be a thermoset plastic similar to nylon.

Introducing PETBOT: A node.js Telepresence Robot

Ari Rizzitano

Recently we added a new member to our engineering team. This is PETBOT, aka Providence Engineering Telepresence roBOT.
It’s a telepresence robot I built for our office, consisting of an iPad mounted on a lightweight chassis powered by an RC car. To operate it, you open up a video chat session with the iPad, then control the robot from your browser using the web interface.
PETBOT can see, move, talk, and, like any startup employee, play foosball. Or at least try to.
