Maslow!

You are going to build amazing things.

Maslow is a community driven open source project with the goal of making large format CNC technology available to everyone. We believe in a world where people everywhere can collaborate, share, and build amazing things together.

What is the Maslow CNC Machine?

Maslow is a large (4'x8') CNC cutting machine designed to let you cut big, useful things out of wood and other flat materials. Cut out a tiny house, a kayak, a tree house, some furniture, or anything else you can imagine. Maslow is designed to be affordable to buy, cheap to ship, easy to use, and powerful. Because designs can be shared digitally, you can build on the work of others or create your own from scratch. Here is our Kickstarter video which is a little out of date, but explains the projects goals well.

2D to 3D, Image to Svg to 3D
Edgar

I've become fascinated with those X-Ray Videos of working Mechanisms, and so, I wanted to make some MDF cut plates of them, just for fun.
So, I went to the Net to search for some 3D Files, but the ones I've found are crap, either Homemade Firearms, or 3D for movies, so I went to do them from scratch.
Here's my tips on how to do it;
How to turn any 2D image, into an Object, or into many parts of a 3D Project.

Battery Cases for Electronic Kits.
liquidhandwash

If you have built one of the cheap electronic kits featured in my previous instructable, you probably want to put in some sort of case. Having your project in a nice looking case will really make your project look great and will impress your friends much more than a naked PCB with wires and a battery hanging off it. Your project should be something you can be proud of, take to a job interview and say look what I made!
This instructable will show you whats possible with a little thought and a laser cutter.
There are four types of cases shown here,
  •  Case without a battery or switch: The easiest to make but you will need to run a lead to your power supply.
  •  Case with a battery: Great if your kit has a switch.
  •  Case with a battery and switch: The most challenging to build, but some kits don't have a switch.
  •  Case with a push button, battery and switch.

97 Examples of Tech-Free Toys
Katherine Pendrill

From DIY Paper Box Puppets to Wooden Coloring Books

While miniature robots and app-controlled playthings may be on the rise, there is still a growing demand from consumers for simple tech-free toys that allow children to embrace their imagination. Made from minimalist materials and featuring straightforwards designs, these timeless toys prove that children don't necessarily need the latest high-tech products.
For boys, there are a number of tech-free toys that are heavily focused on building. For example, there are home-inspired wooden building blocks, cardboard architecture kits and paper-based medieval toys, all of which offer boys the possibility of building their own creations from simple and uncomplicated materials.
For girls, these tech-free toys offer creative and artistic options that go beyond traditional plastic dolls. Some of the most innovative toys for girls are empowering coloring books, DIY paper doll crafts and miniature felt garden play sets. Despite their simplistic design and lack of smart technology, these tech-free toy options for girls are extraordinarily imaginative and highly educational.

The amazing science behind HP’s new full-color 3D printers
Garage Staff

Today, HP unveiled its groundbreaking low-cost, full-color 3D printers at the annual SOLIDWORKS World 3D design and manufacturing trade event. The new HP Jet Fusion 300/500 printers are an industry first: capable of creating production-quality prototypes quickly, accurately and affordably — making advanced 3D technology accessible to a wider swath of digital innovators. And this huge leap forward in 3D printing began as HP explored a surprising realm of light — one that we’re unable to see.
Cheryl MacLeod, HP’s Global Head of 3D Fusion Science, leads the team of scientists and engineers at HP’s 3D Open Materials and Applications Lab in Corvallis, Oregon who are charged with developing the science behind the company’s portfolio of 3D printing materials. “We ultimately think of printing as a way to convey information,” says MacLeod. “And with 3D color printing, we now have an entirely new language.”
Breakthrough 1: Seeing the light
In developing the new Jet Fusion technology, HP’s 3D R&D teams called on the company’s deep expertise in the science of ink to create black fusing agents able to absorb heat at greater speeds, as is needed for 3D printing. But printing color with exclusively black agents isn’t possible, so a new solution needed to be found.

The new HP Jet Fusion 300/500 printers are an industry first: capable of creating production-quality prototypes quickly, accurately and affordably.
HP’s scientists realized that they needed a primer coat of white on the outer layers of the black parts being produced so that color could be applied and fused. But how could you create a layer of white when all available fusing agents were black? A new kind of fusing agent was needed, so that the surface of the fused part remained white, but absorbed heat as well as black. And they found the answer in an unexpected realm of light — one that we’re unable to see.

With 3D printers now dropping to record low prices, more and more people are getting on the additive manufacturing bandwagon. As a long time believer in consumer-level desktop 3D printing, this is a very exciting time for me; the creativity coming out of places like Thingiverse or the 3D printing communities on Reddit is absolutely incredible. But the realist in me knows that despite what slick promotional material from the manufacturers may lead you to believe, these aren’t Star Trek-level replicators. What comes out of these machines is often riddled with imperfections (from small to soul crushing), and can require considerable cleanup work before they start to look like finished pieces.

Imprimir em 3D leva muito tempo...

Robotic and Automation Applications
There's No End To The Wonders Made Possible By SDP/SI.

Whether it's diffusing a bomb or performing a delicate surgery, every robotics application is dependent on one thing: precise motion.

SDP/SI proudly includes the robotics industry among the many markets it supplies with quality miniature drive components. Robotics is especially important because the possibilities for applications are nearly endless; as a result, robots have become far more commonplace in many different industries over the years. No matter what the application is, the success of any robotic operation hinges on one thing: precise motion. The precision mechanical components offered by SDP/SI ensure just that, whether it's a custom gear assembly, a standard stock item or a modified standard component.

3D Printer Job Cost Calculator

We created this little calculator for our friends who run 3D printer farms in their garage as a side business. It’s a quick way to give your customer a quote on a job. The “cost per hour” field lets you easily play with what you want to charge for printing time.

As a fun thing to do, try inputting different costs for “cheap” filament vs. “expensive” filament. Then, try adding 30 mins to the “job time” to simulate having to unclog a jammed extruder / hot-end for using cheap filament and check out the difference in final cost. This is why we put more time and energy into quality over cost.

SUREFLY! OOOOHHH, YEAH!

The Surefly is Your Personal Octocopter That Flies Like a Drone and Can Even be Parked in Your Garage

The time has come. After 78 years, the helicopter has been reinvented. SureFly is a personal helicopter/VTOL aircraft designed for safe and easy flight. With eight independent motors each driving a single carbon fiber propeller, a backup battery power system, and a ballistic parachute to safely land in the event of emergency, the SureFly provides unparalleled safety for a personal aircraft.
SureFly is changing the helicopter industry. Now is the time to discover the affordable, easy-to-pilot, safe answer to personal flight.

From 3D printed gears to functional mechanism
Boris Vaxelaire

In our previous blogposts, we explained how to create your own spur gear thanks to Sculpteo laser cutting service and to our 3D printing service. We now explain how to choose wisely between both technologies and how to succeed with each one.

https://www.sculpteo.com/blog/2017/06/21/from-3d-printed-gears-to-functional-mechanism/

Geneva Wheels À La Carte, to Sgv
Edgar

What Gizmo maker won't, some day, need a Mechanism that will transform a continuous rotation into a move-pause-move one?
That's the Geneva Wheel!

And the question is, where do you get a Vector Drawing of the parts, so you can Laser cut/3D print/machine from a template/whatever?
I've managed to make these parts in sgv format, from an Online Geneva Drive Generator, great program, highly configurable...

But I've not got an Svg directly! No such luck...
I've managed it by snapshotting that page, and then using both Gimp and Inkscape, to make Vector drawings of those parts.
And that's why I've made this Instructable.

Best free CAD software: Top of 20 simple CAD program
Claire Chabaud

To make a 3D print, you need a 3D file, but to get it you don’t need to be an expert or have a significant budget; you can download 3D files from dedicated marketplaces or try to create it by yourself using 3D CAD & Modeling software. One of the main advantages of free modeling software is that they are often more intuitive than professional software, and are user-friendly for all experience levels.

Gears and Gravity: Finished Clocks (Day 13)
J. E. Johnson

Wow, took me long enough to post this. The last day of DEEP camp on June 28 and I learned so much from my students that I’ve been completely absorbed in revising the clock design that I haven’t taken time to post the photos of my student’s truly excellent work. Can’t wait for next year.
The video below shows six cardboard clocks running (mostly) all at once. What a lovely sound.

Geometric Continues to Revolutionize CNC Programming
Responsible for the content of this press release: Geometric Technologies, Inc.

Geometric Continues to Revolutionize CNC Programming with a New Release of ‘Tolerance Based Machining’ for CAMWorks®
Geometric Ltd., a global leader in 3D CNC machining software, today announced a new release of their revolutionary technology that uses SOLIDWORKS® 3D DimXpert and Model Based Definition (MBD) 3D dimensions and annotations to automate the programming of CNC machined components.
CAMWorks was uniquely architected to reduce a 3D solid model into a set of discrete machining features, and apply a knowledge base that selects tools, feeds, speeds, and machining strategies to automate the creation of CNC toolpaths. Tolerance Based Machining dramatically enhances CAMWorks core architecture by adding the ability to read and react to non-geometric manufacturing information such as tolerances, surface finish, and other annotations in 3D models. This ability not only speeds up the CNC programming process, and improvements in quality, but also creates a much stronger design-to-manufacturing process for machined components.

Power Drill to Belt Sander Conversion24Eng in 3D-Printing
Some people spend a lot of money on a 3D printer then don't have money for other tools. I did that. I wanted a 1" (25mm) wide belt sander but it wasn't in the budget. Instead of admitting defeat, I decided to make parts for my own belt sander.
Creating the project with only 3D printed parts would have been possible but the filament would have gotten expensive. Instead, I wanted to combine the benefits of inexpensive steel hardware store parts with a printable design. Everything was printed in regular ABS so it's not necessary to track down a rare filament.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Power-Drill-to-Belt-Sander-Conversion/

What is my.SketchUp?
my.SketchUp is the core SketchUp modeler, tuned to work in modern web browsers. Draw, orbit, push-pull: make anything you can imagine in SketchUp, anytime you imagine it.

Find a 3D model of anything
3D Warehouse lives on the web, and now so does SketchUp. Go ahead, find a 3D model of anything while you're working in my.SketchUp.

Connect with your models anywhere
my.SketchUp uses Trimble Connect to store models online, so they're handy whenever you need them. Create a Trimble account, and get started with 10 gigabytes of free personal storage.

Mini Vise in MinutesChipsWoodShop in tools
This simple tool is very handy for holding small parts for cutting on the CNC router. I also find it useful for drilling holes and other jobs where I need to hold a small part in place. I made mine from materials I had lying around the garage. I was very easy to make, basically cost me nothing, and was well worth the effort.
This vise was featured in my last instructable on CNC Engraving.
