MAKERBLOCK!

PulleyBot: A Pulley Driven Robot

É bom!

Cheaper 3D Prints
markk7
Have you ever uploaded a 3D design and been shocked at the high cost of production? Well I just spent the last few months getting one rude shock after another from various printing services. But I learned a few things the hard way during the process.
Getting your prints manufactured in laser-sintered nylon has a lot of advantages over printing at home. But for the first few weeks (okay, months) I was very confused. Two similar prints could vary in cost from $5 to $50. I tried making walls thinner because I thought all the costs were based on the amount of material used. Slowly I started understanding where a lot of the hidden costs were, and how to eliminate them to lower my prices
These tips are going to seem laughably simple to an experienced designer, but by using these very basic tips I reduced my average print-cost by over 70 percent since my first attempts at 3D printing through a service provider. For example, one of my very first designs dropped from $38 per print to less than $5, with no loss in quality... so I'm sharing the lessons learned.

MIT'S NEW 3D PRINTER CAN PRINT 10 MATERIALS SIMULTANEOUSLYKelsey D. Atherton
Right now, the typical 3D printer is a tool for making plastic objects. Assembling them in layers according to a pre-programmed plan, the printers can quickly make weirdly shaped parts, but they’re often limited to working with just one material at a time. Additive manufacturing, as 3D printing is also known, offers so much more. A new printer, created by MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), can print up to 10 materials into a single object —and incorporate other, finished parts directly into the design— all at a fraction of the cost of complex industrial 3D printers
Their new printer, known as the MultiFab, is a system of systems. A central computer runs the printing program, but as it does so it receives feedback from 3D scanners and machine vision, which map the object as it’s being made, allowing the computer to adjust the printing process and materials accordingly.

RoboSavvy Humanoid Design - unl

Joshua Chung

This robot is called "unl", which provides unlimited possibilities in the humanoid robot design. For a long time that I had a thought that there might be a way to make the same humanoid robot both for home and games. At home, it can be cute, attractive, and playable. But on the game field, it needs special weapons, reduced armor weight, and enlarged range of motion for kicking, punch, and fight. This "unl" kind of integrated two into one. The armor is changeable. It even has two faces for the robot hobbyists and RoboCup champions. I hope you enjoy it and let me know if there is any question or suggestion.

Making Faux PVC Bamboo
Chuck Stephens

I love it when a project comes together! I got the idea for this project about four hours ago and now I'm posting it.
It all started with zaphodd42's Make PVC Look Like Wood instructable. I use PVC in a lot of projects and I'd never thought of using this approach. I was reading the comments and someone asked about simulating bamboo in PVC. My friend and partner in the local maker scene Instructomaker suggested using a heat gun to soften the PVC and compressing the two sides to make it flare out. Hmmm..

Vamos
primeiro ao Robot:

Robot Foam Cutter

jgschmidt

In the course of making stuff for myself and my customers, I frequently perform tedious tasks that could be automated. One of these is cutting foam sheets from a large roll. In the picture you see the roll of foam I start with and the desired end result, which is a stack of 12" by 71/4" pieces of foam. I've used paper cutters, rulers and razor blades, and so on and always dreaded when I ran out and had to cut more.
I've been experimenting with the Actobotics™ robot assembly system from ServoCity, and while cutting my last batch of foam realized that I should be able to make an affordable machine to do this for me. The second picture shows the result: the Robot Foam Cutter.
While you may not need a machine to do the same thing, this Instructable may give you some ideas for automating some of the tedious things you need to do.
UPDATE: I've attached a bill of materials (BOM) spreadsheet with prices in the parts section. My total cost for this project, not counting parts on hand, was about $300. Depending on your frame of reference, this may seem scary expensive or pocket change. For me time is money, and sometimes I have more money than time. For the amount of time this has saved me in the past, and will in the future, it is well worth it.

DREAM. DESIGN. BUILD. REPEAT.

Actobotics is a ball bearing based precision building system. The unique overlapping hole patterns allow for virtually unlimited mounting possibilities, and the precision components offer structures with tight tolerances and low friction. The intuitive design makes building easy for both the experienced engineer and novice hobbyist. As you can see from the product categories shown below, the Actobotics line is vast and continues to expand at a rapid pace. We hope you enjoy working with Actobotics as much as we do!

FILAMENTO - World's Next Generation 3D Printer Material

A new company Creadition produces a series of high quality printing materials has launched in KickStarter that will take you by surprise, especially if you have used other filaments before. I hope everyone would have come across bad prints. There are many factors that rely on the poor quality of prints mainly due to poor quality of filament, jumping, irregular extrusion, bubbles. If you have faced these problems before then you will prefer to order FIAMENTO.

Agridust - 3D printing filament from food waste

Is 3d printing a Green Technology? This is one question most people try to avoid, in fear that their answer might just start an un-ending debate. We have been pulled into many such debates and one thing that we have learned from it is that taking sides can make your best friend on of your fiercest opponent. According to us the debate supporting it or against it is completely unfair as consumer 3d printing is in its infancy. And like we all know kids learns from their mistakes, we should give 3d printing some time to mature as a fool proof solution to production of every day products.

Taulman3D Releases New, Super Strong Nylon Filament

Matt Shultz

Tom Martz of Taulman3D joined the crowds at the Midwest RepRap Fest this past weekend in Goshen, Indiana. While there, Tom took to the stage to present his company’s brand new Alloy 910, a high-strength nylon filament. Alloy 910 came about after Taulman’s corporate clients asked for a stronger nylon formulation with less flexibility than many other nylons. Tom and his team managed to formulate a new filament that has a tensile strength of 8,100 PSI, and only 25% maximum elongation (compared to ABS 5,800 PSI and 30% elongation). The Taulman team also claims that 910 has a comparable shrinkage as PLA, making it a great material for printing large rugged prints.

University of Coimbra developing minesweeping robot
Nick Lavars

A team from the Institute of Systems and Robotics at Portugal's University of Coimbra is developing a minesweeping robot to assist in the monumental task of clearing the millions of active land mines around the globe. Currently putting it through a series of field testings, the team is working to optimize the robot to automate the manual, and exceedingly dangerous humanitarian, de-mining effort.

Flexible Arm - Experimental Project.

To be more accurate there are two versions of this flexible arm project for members to download and make.
Version one uses two tendons to move the arm up and down.
Version two uses a single tendon with spacers to keep it away from the centre line.

Licence management – everything under one roof

Detect if costly licences are unused. Act when co-workers cannot get their work done, because there are no free licences for the software they need. Make an informed decision, if you will need more licences in the future or if you can cancel software maintenance on a few licences. And make sure, that the software is just used as contracted.
  • recognize surplus – save licence costs
  • recognize needs – avoid licence shortages
  • monitor licences – optimize licence usage
  • maintain licence agreements – prevent penalties
OpenLM shows you at a glance how your software licence pool is used.

How to make a better cross cut sled

joelav

Crosscut sleds are essential for woodworkers with traditional table saws. They make cross cutting operations a lot more accurate, a lot cleaner, and a lot safer. With a couple neat tricks, you can really expand the usefulness of this jig. Woodworking is essentially pattern making. A jig like this helps make repeatable, precision cut patterns easier.

I have quite a few sleds for different operations. The problem is they can be quite large and storing them in my garage shop is becoming a chore. I decided to create a multi-purpose sled for various cross cutting, compound miter cutting, and dado operations.

DARPA's XS-1 sets goal of space launches with one-day turnaround

David Szondy

Currently, launching satellites is an involved and expensive process. DARPA’s Experimental Spaceplane (XS-1) program hopes to make this a thing of the past, by developing a shuttle-like resuable launch system that can turn around from landing to relaunch in one day, and bring down the cost of launching by a factor of 10.
We live in a fast-paced world where international situations can change overnight. Areas that were once stable and peaceful can suddenly turn into hotbeds of war and crisis. To deal with these security threats, the United States relies, in part, on its fleet of military surveillance satellites. Unfortunately, whereas a threat can pop up suddenly, satellites can only be launched from a handful of locations, plus they require the logistics of a small war to launch, and take years and hundreds of millions of dollars to put into orbit. This makes putting assets in space on short notice a herculean task.

DIY high resolution 3D DLP printer (3D printer)

TristramBudel

I have to admit that I have not been active on Instructables for quite a while now, this because we (yes it is we now :D) have been busy developing a 3D printer. A 3D dlp printer to be exact, an open source high resolution 3D DLP printer to be even more exact.
We have now finished version 1.0 and now it is time to share our learnings with the rest of the world.

Why did we work on a 3D printer?
Well as you all know the world needs more 3D printers, more platforms for creation, more freedom. More possible ways to show your epic awesomeness in creation. And most of all the freedom to design and fabricate exactly what you need, when you need it without any barriers. In short 3D printers are awesome, you can never have enough 3D printers.

Robot Caterpillar Tank Treads, Johnny Five Style - 3D Print
Tomdf
When I was but a wee little inventor, I saw a movie that forever imprinted itself into my soul. This picture told the gripping tale of mans' ever loosening control over its own technology; a film that dared ask the question "What makes us alive?" This masterpiece of the cinema was, of course, Short Circuit 2.

During November of 2012 I was fortunate enough to play as an Artist in Residence at the Instructables HQ, and was given full access to a room full of Object Connex 500 multiple material 3D printers! I had always wanted a toy version of the robot from Short Circuit, Johnny Five, and I found myself with the means to print one at my fingertips. Later on I will be adding components to this robot until I have a completed, functional model.

To begin, I drew a handful of rough pencil sketches just to give myself a an idea of how the treads could work and eventually moved the idea over into 123D beta 9. A copy of the model was printed, and the pieces of track snapped together just as intended.

Parallel Leg Vise with St. Andrew's Cross
Scotttland

In woodworking and fabricating, a leg vise can be enormously useful.  They offer a large, flat clamping surface on which you can impart a surprising amount of clamping force.  A properly aligned leg vise can hold large workpieces such as doors or 6x6 beams.  But few companies make proper woodworking leg vises or even the hardware for them.  The issue with making a leg vise is keeping the chop (the part that moves) parallel to the bench leg when under tension.  This Instructable features a solution.

I make all my leg vises at TechShop.

The Cats Tower
thattori
The design concept of the cats tower is all-in-one-cage which is narrow for human being, but wide for cats. In the all-in-one-cage, cats can eat, can do exercise, can do excretion and can sleep in the cage.
Those are [1]high curiosity to environment, [2]high mobility and [3]high ability of self decision. The high curiosity to environment brings out high ability to move, and the high mobility brings out high ability of self decision. The curiosity is the path to the mobility, the mobility is the path to the self-decision. The three features are genetically pre-installed within cats, I guessed so.
Cats can't stop learning of environment. The curiosity is expressed as [1]freely exploration, [2]freely research or [3]freely strolling. It looks like action gathering information for keeping their own life.
