Don't wanna pay trough your nose, for a Smartphone?
Build one!

Building Poorna, your first KitePhone
Shree Kumar

A KitePhone is simply a phone built using the Kite Kit. Consumer phones go through a teardown, so that folks can understand how they are built. Kite is built for makers, so we take a "build" approach here.
In this post, I will show you how we’ve put together a minimally complete model of a phone. We call this model, “Poorna”. Poorna is a Sanskrit word, commonly meaning “complete”. It can also mean “zero”, and there are philosophical interpretations too, but then I digress. Poorna is a complete phone providing functionality like the smartphone in your pocket. No additional bells & whistles, just pure Android.
Here is a short overview video (exactly 2 minutes, 17 seconds) of how to build Poorna, starting from Kite:

Uma Roda de Genebra, não há quem não acabe por querer fazer uma...
Portanto, aprendam como desenhar uma, como a quizerem!

You'll end up by wanting to make some kind of Geneva Wheel, soo...
Design your own, as you want it.

Make Geneva Wheels of Any Size in a Easier Way
iGreeny

It's not so hard to find the formulas and diagrams if you want to design a Geneva wheel of your own, and you can do it following this article: Make Geneva wheels of any size and this video.
but I feel it's not very friendly to non-engineer readers - at least it took me quite a while to pull out the math and geometry I've learned back in high school. So i decided to translate the formulas into plain English and clearer steps. I also made 2 videos simply recording how I designed it in Fusion 360.
Variables you can decide freely (within a reasonable range)
  •  the quantity of the slots on the Geneva wheel;
  •  the radius of the drive pin;
  •  the Geneva wheel radius;
  •  drive pin clearance.
You and use any CAD software you feel comfortable with because we only need basic sketch functions for designing.

Without Welding, there's no real Metal-made gizmo building hability.
So, get to learn, on a Welding Class, just for you:

WELDING CLASS
audreyobscura

Metal has been worked by humans for thousands of years. Over time, the techniques and technology used to produce and shape metal goods have been driven by the innovations of science and technology.
Before we dive into some of the technical processes available for welding metal together, let's first take a moment to define a weld. A weld is a fabrication process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by fusion. Fusing materials is distinctly different than other kinds of lower temperature metal-joining techniques such as soldering, which do not melt the base metal.
Metal welding is the fusing of two pieces of metal to create one solid continuous piece. All welders work on the same principle: A gas torch or electric welder is used to generate precisely directed heat to melt material, and a filler material is introduced by the operator to complete the fusion.
As these processes became more accessible, we've come so far that you - yes YOU! - can learn how to weld easily.

3D Printing a Mold for a Mold! I keep telling you, 3D printing was made for Molds!
Watch how it's made, so you can produce anything in decent numbers:

3D Printing a Mold for a Mold
Charlotte_J

I have always loved the 3D model of the 'Vaas met oor' (Cup with ear) by Joris Van Tubergen. A couple of years ago I did my first attempt to make ceramic cups of the model. I succeeded and love drinking my coffee from these cups.
Recently I wanted to make some more of them. Only thing: I did not like the handwork that was needed to create the mold.
Inspired by the option 'Mold' in the software for my Ultimaker 3D printer (Cura) I started to think about printing a mold for a mold.
This Instructable shows what I did to print a mold for a mold and how I was able to use it.

Leiam.

Seems Electric Motors are leaving the Wimpy League...
Have a read, a new Motor, almost 4 times more torque than the best there was, so far!

Magnax prepares to manufacture radically high-powered, compact axial flux electric motor
Loz Blain

After nearly a decade in development, Belgian startup Magnax claims it has developed an ultra-high power, lightweight, compact axial flux electric motor with performance figures that blow away everything in the conventional radial flux world. Crucially, it says it's worked out how to manufacture them too.
It might not have the romance of combustion engine tuning, but it seems a bit of a battle is brewing to develop the kinds of high-performance motors that will power the electric cars, motorcycles, aircraft and industrial equipment of the future.
A week ago we wrote about Equipmake's spoke motor design, which allows it to pump out some 9 kilowatts per kilogram with exceptional cooling and continuous power production ability.
To put that kind of power production in perspective, the ludicrously fast 193-horsepower BMW S1000RR superbike of 2011 – a power-to-weight beast that would slay just about anything in the automotive world – has a lightweight motor that makes a puny 2.4 kilowatts per kilogram. So 9 kW/kg is no joke.

3D Printable Airsoft Gun
Engineer777

PURPOSE
When 3D printers started to dramatically drop in price and were thrust onto the commercial market, I was immediately hooked. This is every engineer's dream come true! The storm of cool printable products really hasn't developed as I expected however. Most people were, and still are, only printing little sculptures and vases. In terms of pushing this technology to its potential, we're not off to a great start! I came to the conclusion that it is not a lack of vision that is limiting the use of these desktop printers, but a lack of designs. People would print more awesome things if there were more awesome things to print. So I put two and two together and started designing this printable airsoft gun. It's the start of many designs I hope to produce for people who really want more than just a vase from their printers. I hope it will inspire you to get your creative mind in gear and contribute some awesome designs for a 3D printable future!

Build Your Own Storage Shed!
NathanaelScheffler

Hello Instructables! This is my entry into the Shopbot Contest. This Instructable will show you the steps to building your own shed. We decided that our shed would be for storage because we wanted to get some stuff out of the garage so we can use it as a shop. One of the challenges of building a shed in our backyard was that the ground was sloped in the area that we wanted to put it, so we had to find a way to get around that. Another was that we are building beside some well established trees, and we didn't want to harm their root structure. This is why we went with cinderblock and mortar rather than poured concrete.

Porreiro.

Open Source 3D Printed Clip-On Microscope For Smartphones
Anne Freier

This is an open source design for a smartphone camera microscope which can be customized, downloaded and 3D printed.
A team of researchers at RMIT University in Australia have developed a 3D printable clip-on microscope for smartphones. The design of the microscope has been shared on the Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics website.
Led by Anthony Orth, a research officer at the centre at RMIT University, the device has been developed to allow anyone, from students to medical staff to people at home, to take a closer look at things invisible to the naked eye.
The solution also means that the microscope can be used in situations where laboratory equipment may not be available. This could be hugely beneficial for application in less developed countries to help detect malaria or other blood borne parasites.
Orth explains in a post for The Conversation:
“What we’re hoping is that our design, or something like it, gets used for ultra simple, cheap and robust mobile phone based devices – be it for medical diagnostics in underserved areas such as the remote Australian outback and central Africa, or monitoring microorganism populations in local water sources.”
The researchers are also hoping that the final design can be optimized further to suit different people’s needs.

Modelos e Ideias!

Impressionante.

Researchers Develop 3D Hologram Display for Smartphone Use

Tyler Koslow
Just a few years ago, the idea of having access to holograms seemed like a fantastical notion. What once was a communication tool in the sci-fi classic Star Wars is starting to become an imminent reality.
A team of researchers from the Melbourne, Australia-based RMIT University and the Beijing Institute of Technology are developing what they call the “world’s thinnest hologram.”

Creating 3D Holograms On Your Smartphone

The team is designing a nano-hologram that you can see without 3D goggles and is also 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. Using topological insulators, the researchers are creating a holographic film screen that is only 60 nanometers thick.
This material have unique properties, acting like a conductor at the surface but an insulator throughout most of the interiors.
According to Zengji Yue, a research fellow at RMIT University and co-author of the research paper, the combination of the metallic surface and insulated interior acts as an intrinsic optical cavity. This generates multiple reflections of light within the thin film.

E agora...
Arte 3D!

Olivier van Herpt Partners with Fashion brand COS to 3D Print Clay Vases

Hanna Watkin
Fashion brand COS has commissioned dutch designer Olivier van Herpt to create a series of five vases using a custom-designed 3D printer.
Olivier van Herpt is an industrial design graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven. He has specialized on beautiful 3D printed objects made from clay. Fashion brand COS regularly works with artists and van Herpt was chosen due to his innovative twist on 3D printing.
Now van Herot has developed a series of five printed vases which are inspired by the company’s Spring/Summer collection. The designs take into account the colors, textures, and shapes of the collection’s pieces.
As a result, each of the vases has a different shape, from curved to angular. The final designs are now on display in COS stores around the world.
These stores include Stockholm’s Biblioteksgatan, Berlin’s Neue Schönhauser Strasse, London’s Regent Street, in Rotterdam’s Dreamhouse, Spain’s Bilbao and on New York’s Fifth Avenue.
If you live nearby any of these stores, check out the images of van Herpt working on the vases in the windows. You’ll be able to spot the designer’s custom-designed 3D printer which drips clay. By using a 3D printer, he was able to print larger designs.

3D Printing Material: CarbonMideSculpteo
Our CarbonMide Material
The CarbonMide objects printed at Sculpteo are created from a fine black plastic polyamide powder (PA12) reinforced with carbon-fibers. The material is characterized by an excellent stiffness and a maximized weight-strength-ratio. It nearly has the same mechanical properties than the solid black plastic Polyamide but is much more lightweight. The material is great for experienced professionals and people in need of a strong and lightweight material, and a very high 3D printing precision.
Due to the process related orientation of the fibers, the mechanical properties vary in the three axis directions. The Z axis is is the less resistant compared to X and Y. To learn more about it, refer to the design guidelines.
To learn more, refer to our paragraph about finishes and colors for polyamide models.
Processing Times and Pricing
The printing price of your design is calculated automatically the moment it is placed online. As you modify your object (changing size, using batch control or hollowing feature, etc.) you will note that the price changes automatically. The pricing is based on a series of factors, including: total volume, object size, and bounding box - to name a few.
Your CarbonMide object is estimated to arrive in maximum 16 business days. Polishing options and particularly large objects can extend the processing time by 1-2 days on average. The estimated shipping time is also calculated automatically as the object is uploaded.
Delivery time should be added to processing time and depends on the delivery option you choose.

Swamp Cooler, Hydroponic, Rooftop GreenhouseAviKado in backyard
For those not in the know, a swamp cooler (also known as an evaporative cooler) is a popular way of cooling homes in hot, dry climates like Tucson, Arizona. It is a very simple machine, just a box with a fan in it and wet pads as walls. The fan pulls dry air through the wet pads, thus evaporating water, and pushes the now moist air into the home. The simple act of evaporation causes the pads to get very cool, and thus will cool the air as it flows past. The humidification of air is a side effect, but is usually welcomed when it is very dry outside. This is the same basic principle of how sweat works. However, swamp coolers can only drop the temperature of air by a limited amount, and will only work when it is dry, which is why you only see them in certain regions and even then, many people prefer AC units (or both). But enough about swamp coolers, lets turn ours into something else!
It is an enclosed space with water and electricity, and is usually located on the roof of a building where it will get a lot of sun. The orientation of the swamp cooler does matter. The side with the duct should face north, but may also work if it face east or west. If it faces south it will block to much sun to make this useful. The roof of a swamp cooler is solid, but with the low winter sun it wasn't much of a problem.

Dobrar Metal?

Homemade Roller Bender
Make it Extreme
The main problem that people, who are occupied with doing various metallic projects and generally constructions, face is the bending of metallic pieces. The reason that this problem is arisen during these projects is because the metallic pieces need a lot of pressure, strength as well as accuracy to be bent. There are many machines to be used to achieve this but the cost is high. Although, the metal roller bender has been already made once by the ‘make it extreme’ team, the particular construction was not affordable by anyone as more specialized machines were needed to be made than the ones that can be found in any home. Therefore, this our 56th construction is more user-friendly to everyone, is relatively affordable, is extremely useful and it will fill with feelings of joy and satisfaction the people who want to spend their time productively.

$5 Powerful DIY Fume Extractor
geekrex
I love making projects from scratch whenever possible, so soldering comes in the process. But soldering needs to be done in a well-ventilated Environment or a Fume Extractor should be used.
But Why is soldering so dangerous?
Flux generates the visible fumes seen during soldering. Exposure to rosin can cause eye, throat and lung irritation, nose bleeds and headaches. Repeated exposure can cause respiratory and skin sensitisation, causing and aggravating asthma. Rosin is a serious occupational health hazard.
But Fume extractor are really expensive like 70$ which beginner like to skip because of the price.
In this instructable, I will share what I used for so many years. This project cost around 5$ but works like a charm.
Not only it can be used for soldering only it can also be used for 3D Printing ABS, as it fumes and also toxic in nature.

“MAKERPAD” PLATFORM ALLOWS BEGINNERS TO 3D PRINT THROUGH SMARTPHONE
Peter Smith
Purdue University’s researchers in Indiana have collaborated with the National Science Foundation to start an innovative platform that enables your smartphone to assist in 3D printing, allowing you to create some unique designs. This new platform is known as Makerpad – an inventive and advanced platform specifically for beginners. The patents of this platform are presently pending by the Purdue Research Foundation’s Office of Technology Commercialization.
Karthik Ramani, project leader of this venture said that manufacturing and product design are the purviews of professionals and enterprises like artists and engineers. On the other hand, Donald W. Feddersen, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University explained that many people have ideas but only a few of them have guts to implement those ideas into a reality. This is actually a waste of available creative human resources and the economic prospects of the world economy.
This platform can even be used by amateur users to create 3D prints, 3D scans, 3D models and laser cuts. With the network accessibility and free technology available, anyone can easily attempt to become a designer. However, 3D printing involves some fundamental skills as well as tools. Hence, many designers are simply not capable of using 3D printing technology effectively. But with the help of this platform, “Makerpad,” users can now easily 3D print several designs.

Welcome!
This is an online edition of the classic technical reference Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements by Henry T. Brown.
This site contains the original illustrations and text from the 21st edition of the book, published in 1908. It also includes animated versions of the illustrations, and occasional notes by the webmaster.
The animated versions are not yet complete. They are identified by color images in the thumbnail pages. To keep up with developments on this site, use the Twitter Follow or Facebook Subscribe links below.
Animation system
The animations are implemented with a custom JavaScript library, which uses an HTML 5 Canvas element. You must have an up-to-date web browser to view them.
The JavaScript library is highly experimental and is proprietary for now. We may polish and release it as open-source at some point, but at present it’s far too specialized to be generally useful.

Hand+Ink Letterpress in Aluminum
kniegmann
I recently had some time to revisit my mini letterpress project. After using the earlier design for awhile, I wanted to redesign the press to eliminate all 3D printed parts and make it out of metal for increased strength. This press can be made out of MDF or Aluminum with a few quick dimension changes. The files attached are for 5mm thick aluminium sheet. Almost of of the parts can be cut with a laser cutter/waterjet/cnc, although I did use a lathe to make the wood handles and the top cross bar. All dimensions are in mm since I have recently moved to Sweden.
