iPhone Magnetic Measurements
Modern smartphones have internal magnetic sensors that can detect magnetic fields.  Learn more about how the output of these sensors can be useful in finding north, identifying the direction of the earths’ magnetic field, identifying poles of magnets and checking compliance with air shipment regulations.

Detect Earth’s Magnetic Field In our earlier article, The Earth is a Magnet, we described the earth’s magnetic field.  As most of us know, we can measure the direction of this field with a compass to figure out which way is north.  Most smartphones come preloaded with a compass application that does exactly that.

While most folks aren’t using this compass to figure out which way to go, they are using magnetic information indirectly.  When using an iPhone for directions, the phone considers not only the GPS sensor data, but also the magnetometer and accelerometers.  That’s part of how it can tell which direction you are pointed in.
The magnetic field sensed by the internal compass is not actually pointing to the north pole.  In fact, unless you live near the equator, it is probably pointing mostly down into the ground!

Slingatron to hurl payloads into orbit

David Szondy

People have been shooting things into space since the 1940s, but in every case this has involved using rockets. This works, but it’s incredibly expensive with the cheapest launch costs hovering around US$2,000 per pound. This is in part because almost every bit of the rocket is either destroyed or rendered unusable once it has put the payload into orbit. Reusable launch vehicles like the SpaceX Grasshopper offer one way to bring costs down, but another approach is to dump the rockets altogether and hurl payloads into orbit. That's what HyperV Technologies Corp. of Chantilly, Virginia is hoping to achieve with a “mechanical hypervelocity mass accelerator” called the slingatron.

LEGO Coin Sorter
sherrycayheyhey

The Design
I wasn't too thrilled about how the case came out but I was happy with the mechanism part. Many of the LEGO coin sorters I've seen require the whole unit to be tilted which I think looks weird so I wanted to make my coin sorter with a sloped ramp with the rest level.

I wanted to enclose the mechanism to create a bit of mystery and get people thinking about how the machine might work. I also liked the idea of being able to see the coins drop so I added a couple of extra layers to make the machine taller.

This machine is made to work with US coins but could probably be very easily modified to work with other coins.

Adventures in RepRap Construction

Andrew Back

A report on the first experiences of building a RepRap 3D printer.
Over a weekend back in March my local hackerspace group, Bridge Rectifier, hosted a 3D printing workshop at which we learnt how to construct a RepRap printer and to use a software toolchain for creating, processing and printing 3D models.
For the workshop we were very fortunate to be under the expert tuition of Alan Wood and Mike Beardmore from Thames Valley RepRap User Group (TVRRUG), a 3D printing enthusiast group that has constructed over 100 RepRap printers and designed its own enhancements.
Around 30 people took part in the workshop and following the introductory presentations we split into two groups: one working on printer construction and a second learning the software tools.
The machine we built was a variant of the RepRap Prusa Mendel, provided to us in the kit form as used in TVRRUG's own printer self-build rounds.

The frogs were made out of clay, baked, then glued to the cross rod.

RepRap Magazine
Welcome to the first edition of !
This project is brought to you by a small team of enthusias- tic and motivated users, experts and developers of RepRap 3D printers project.
We aim to develop this project in an open way, working on a close relationship with our readers.

For this first issue, as our cover mentions, we focus the main article on slicers, but also take a close look at the pro-tip of the issue, as well as the software section where we start a se- ries of articles dedicated to Repetier. While it is hard to choose the highlight of this issue we would have to point to our interview with Adrian Bowyer, the person who started the RepRap project and who was kind enough to give us an interview for our first edition. With all that said, we hope that you enjoy this edition and stay tuned on this project.

How to make Machinable Wax at home!
rawkstar320
Featured on Hackaday.com!  Woohoo!  But for records sake, my name is Jake: http://hackaday.com/2012/12/29/make-your-own-machinable-wax
A major issue that I ran into when I first started working with my new CNC machine was the cost of raw materials to machine. Sure, a block of plastic is not terribly expensive by itself – but figure in the cost after you mess something up and the cost becomes quite unreasonable. For this reason, I began looking into machinable wax.

Machinable wax is a very hard wax that won’t gum up a cutting tool, is soft enough to machine quickly and most importantly is completely reusable! Since I am cheap, I decided to make my own, which is actually quite simple and could be considered environmentally friendly since we use recycled plastic bags. Be aware that this Instructable is DANGEROUS! We will be melting wax around 300* and this wax will be thick and sticky so it will literally burn your skin off faster than you can say “OUCH!”

Portable native MOD player based on Raspberry PI (plays MOD,S3M,IT,XM etc...). Uses BassPlay library.
Mr.Holub
Description:

Raspberry-PI based native MOD player to play music modules MOD,S3M,IT,XM among others.
It uses command-line player based on bass-play libraries.

Short description of music modules:

Music modules originates from Amiga computers, later were transferred to another platforms.
The main principe is the file containing sound samples and patterns containing information of when and how particular sound should be played.
As there are players for Windows, Linux and other platforms nowadays, portable players can play just mp3 files which was my motivation to construct this player.

Double Mirror Right Angle Drilling Guide
kentdvm
Drilling a straight hole can be difficult because you can only see one side of the bit at a time.  Without a lot of practice, many of the holes end up perpendicular in one plane and not so perpendicular in the other.  Drilling with a conventional guide (2 blocks at 90°) works in some applications, but when using short bits there's not enough room.  This is quick, cheap & easy drilling guide will help you bore accurate holes even with small bits.  Using two small mirrors, it works similar to a dressing room mirror to help you view the bit from all angles.  When all the bits are parallel, start drilling.  It's that easy.

Working Night-vision Periscope. (Steampunked)
longwinters
This is a project I made while on Holiday for Christmas, it took about 20 hours and was cheep if you can find the supplies at a second hand store.
It is fully functional and works with infra-red quite well, the iris lens cover was a left over from a pair of goggles that were never finished their construction is much the same as found in my steampunk goggle instructable.

LAYWOO-D3 allows for 3D printing of (sort of) wooden objects

Ben Coxworth

Usually when we think of materials that can be used in 3D printers, we think of substances that can be melted, like plastic or resin. What we don't think of is wood. Nonetheless, a new product allows users to create 3D-printed wooden objects ... depending on how you define “wooden.”
Known as LAYWOO-D3, the material was created by inventor Kai Parthy. It’s made up of 40 percent recycled wood fiber, combined with a polymer binder. Like other printing materials, it comes in filament spools that are fed into the printer, where they’re melted and subsequently extruded.
Objects made with the material reportedly won’t warp, and can be painted, ground or cut like wood. It will take on a different shade of brown, depending on the temperature at which it’s printed – this means that by intentionally varying that temperature, users can simulate a tree’s growth ring effect.

TinyDuino shrinks the Arduino, retains its flexibility

Adam Williams

The popular open-source Arduino microcontroller has been implemented in countless projects worldwide, and this very success has led the hacker community to create several smaller and cheaper alternatives to the Arduino, such as the Digispark. TinyDuino continues in this miniaturization trend but, crucially, does so while promising to retain all the flexibility of its illustrious forbear.

TinyCircuits hacker-in-chief Ken Burns was prompted to create the TinyDuino based on his feeling that the Arduino and Arduino LilyPad were, as much as he loved them, often too big and expensive for use in smaller projects. Therefore, he set about creating a smaller version of an Arduino which maintained the key benefits of expandability and power.

TALISE aquatic rover may explore a lake on Titan

Ben Coxworth

Titan is Saturn’s largest moon, and it’s said to be one of the most Earth-like celestial bodies in the Solar System. It has a thick atmosphere, and is covered with a network of seas, lakes and rivers – albeit ones made up of liquid hydrocarbons instead of water. Now, a team of scientists are proposing sending a boat-like probe to Titan, that would travel across its largest lake.
The probe, which is still in the concept stage, is known as TALISE – that stands for Titan Lake In-situ Sampling Propelled Explorer, although it’s also an Iroquois word for “beautiful water.” The plan calls for it to land in the middle of Ligeia Mare, which is near the moon’s north pole. It would then set out on a six-month to one-year mission, taking scientific measurements and obtaining samples as it makes its way to the closest shore.

New Boards on the Block

Earlier this year the Raspberry Pi set the benchmark for low cost and highly capable embedded Linux systems, but what if you needed something more powerful — a lot more powerful...
ODROID-X
The ODROID-X mobile software development platform packs four ARM Cortex-A9 cores clocked at 1.4GHz along with 1M L2 cache, 1G RAM, Ethernet, 6 x USB 2.0 ports, and HDMI and LCD ports.
You don't get something for nothing and, of course, this is much more expensive than a Raspberry Pi, with other considerations including that it won't have anything like the same size of community. However, if you need a high performance embedded Linux system this does look attractive.

The different technologies behind 3D Printing

What we call “3D Printing” includes different fabrication methods. It would be more accurate to call it “Additive Manufacturing”. Only one technology works like printing and worth to be called 3D Printing: it’s 3DP.
- Stereo Lithography Apparatus (SLA) use a vat of liquid UV-curable photopolymer “resin” and a UV laser. Exposure to the UV laser light cures, solidifies the pattern traced on the resin. It was developed by Chuck W. Hull (co-founder of 3D Systems) in 1986

E os Grafenos estão cada vez melhores:
Graphene's 'quantum leap' takes electronics a step closer
by Staff Writers
Manchester UK (SPX) Jul 27, 2011

Writing in the journal Nature Physics, the academics, who discovered the world's thinnest material at The University of Manchester in 2004, have revealed more about its electronic properties.

Research institutes and universities around the world are already looking at ways to build devices such as touch-screens, ultrafast transistors and photodetectors.

Now the research from the creators of the material promises to accelerate that research, and potentially open up countless more electronic opportunities.

3d printed Mario Kart racers
Bored architect + Makerbot = totally awesome RC turtle shells

Michael Curry (aka Skimbal) has brought Mario Kart gaming nostalgia to life with his remarkably comprehensive Turtle Shell Racers.
I think we can all agree, life would become much more interesting if I launched a turtle shell at you every once and a while.
All of the .stl files are available on Thingiverse, including full assembly instructions and a parts list for the electronics, motor and other RC components needed to get those wheels turning.

http://reprap.org/wiki/AoI

DUUUUUHHHH!
