MAKERBLOCK!

Cheaper 3D Prints
markk7
Have you ever uploaded a 3D design and been shocked at the high cost of production? Well I just spent the last few months getting one rude shock after another from various printing services. But I learned a few things the hard way during the process.
Getting your prints manufactured in laser-sintered nylon has a lot of advantages over printing at home. But for the first few weeks (okay, months) I was very confused. Two similar prints could vary in cost from $5 to $50. I tried making walls thinner because I thought all the costs were based on the amount of material used. Slowly I started understanding where a lot of the hidden costs were, and how to eliminate them to lower my prices
These tips are going to seem laughably simple to an experienced designer, but by using these very basic tips I reduced my average print-cost by over 70 percent since my first attempts at 3D printing through a service provider. For example, one of my very first designs dropped from $38 per print to less than $5, with no loss in quality... so I'm sharing the lessons learned.

MIT'S NEW 3D PRINTER CAN PRINT 10 MATERIALS SIMULTANEOUSLYKelsey D. Atherton
Right now, the typical 3D printer is a tool for making plastic objects. Assembling them in layers according to a pre-programmed plan, the printers can quickly make weirdly shaped parts, but they’re often limited to working with just one material at a time. Additive manufacturing, as 3D printing is also known, offers so much more. A new printer, created by MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), can print up to 10 materials into a single object —and incorporate other, finished parts directly into the design— all at a fraction of the cost of complex industrial 3D printers
Their new printer, known as the MultiFab, is a system of systems. A central computer runs the printing program, but as it does so it receives feedback from 3D scanners and machine vision, which map the object as it’s being made, allowing the computer to adjust the printing process and materials accordingly.

Makercase!

Observem:

Shopbotting a Sydney Harbour Bridge: Proof of Concept

My first tiling project, works great... lots more big stuff in the works thanks to my ShopBot Desktop! http://CNCKing.com distributes AI, CDR, EPS, DXF, STL, DAE, PartWorks and PDF files and scaled measurement free templates.

Optical Encoder Pair Kit for Micro Metal Gearmotors, 5V

Overview

This set includes sensor boards and reflective wheels to add quadrature encoding to two micro metal gearmotors with extended back shafts. 3-tooth and 5-tooth encoder wheels are included to provide options of 12 counts per revolution and 20 counts per revolution of the motor shaft (to compute the encoder counts per revolution of the gearbox output, multiply by the gear ratio). Because the encoder board outputs are direct phototransistor outputs, some signal conditioning is often necessary between the sensor and a digital system processing the signals.

Plástico feito em casa! E Oogoo, a receita.

An Alternative Homemade Plastic - PVA and Borax

Robert Murray-Smith

I thought this was pretty interesting so I thought I would share it with you. A possible construction material for engines? or maybe be just as a modelling material for the fun of it? It's simple stuff - just PVA and borax in slution with a filler and a plasticiser. I guess a little playing around with this material would yield some interesting results

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyrl__BVCqA

Oogoo, a Receita

Em proporções de volume igual, Silicone e Maizena, obtêem uma Boracha saltitona e que estica bem;

Mais Silicone que Maizena, e a Borracha é ainda mais resistente;

ROK'n Roadways adds a dynamic twist to your adventure.

ROK'n Roadways is an awesome expansion set that allows you to connect and expand your Rokenbok world. Watch the road build it self as the roadway comes together for a loader to drive up and over just in time.

N55's spaceframe tricycle can be built at home from plans

By Bridget Borgobello

Danish design studio N55, in collaboration with German designer Till Wolfer, has created a series of open-source human-powered vehicle designs that can be built at home using basic tools and materials. Dubbed XYZ Spaceframe Vehicles, the models incorporate weather-resistant and lightweight frames that are made using standard aluminum tubes. Those tubes are assembled using simple stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts. “Unlike the singular load-bearing tube seen in traditional bike structures, the main structure is an orthogonal spaceframe of standard aluminum tubes,” says N55.

Popinator: The mouth-seeking popcorn cannon

By Jonathan Fincher

You know you're living in the future when even the simple act of throwing a piece of popcorn in the air and catching it in your mouth gets a mechanical upgrade. Thanks to snack maker, Popcorn Indiana, eating popcorn is now as "easy" as asking for it and having the company's new Popinator fire a piece right into your mouth.
The Popinator was designed to make eating popcorn more fun and as a way to munch while keeping your hands free. It uses a binaural microphone system – similar to the way humans hear – to detect when the word "pop" is spoken and pinpoint where the sound came from. Then it flips up a small barrel and launches a piece of popcorn in the air for the person to catch in their mouth. Each piece of popcorn has a different size and shape though, so it might take a little maneuvering to snatch out of the air, but it still looks remarkably accurate.

Inflatable robotic arm for DARPA

It expands from a ball, weighs half a pound, and lifts five pounds.

Depending on who you ask, DARPA is either the monster under our collective bed or they are the masked guardians of civil society. Sometimes both. Either way, they have a history of funding some pretty cool projects. This robotic arm is no exception. It was made by the company iRobot under contract by DARPA as a next-gen combat robot for use in environments too small or too hazardous for human soldiers.
The video after the jump is definitely worth watching. It weighs less than half a pound, inflates from a small ball, and can lift up to five pounds. It’s difficult to believe, but it works.

SODIS method of creating drinking water. Everyone should know this.

Even though I already knew you could purify the water this way, I did not know that even if you have boiled the water before storing, it can still be contaminated. Everyone  should read and know this.

Só com a Umidade do Ar:

Safe Water Supply
Pure Distilled Water for Third World Village Residents
A High-Performance Natural Water Still, but with NO flame or fire!

You have noticed that when you have a glass of iced soda, that often droplets of water form on the OUTSIDE of the glass. There are people who think that water is seeping through the glass, but that is not true! What is actually happening is that the cold liquid INSIDE the glass causes the glass itself to get cold (which you know). THEN, when WARM room air happens to pass near that cool glass, the AIR cools down. IF it cools down enough, and if the humidity in the room is high enough, the air cools to below the Dewpoint. What that means is that the cooler air cannot then contain as much water vapor as it normally had, and so droplets of water MUST form on the cool surface as some of the water condenses. This is also why fog occurs (in that case, the water droplets condense around tiny specks of dust in the air) or why basement walls are often damp or why some windows can have water or even ice form on them in winter.

DesignSpark ajuda-vos!

The right motherboard, key to project success

Contributed by Mark BVM

Choosing a motherboard can be a bewildering process. In the old days there was little to choose from, today it seems endless. ATX, micro-ATX, ITX, mini-ITX, the list goes on. The likes of ATX may seem old hat, but where different types of expansion card slots are required, an industrial ATX or micro-ATX motherboard could be your only option. Since Taiwanese firm VIA created Mini-ITX as a vehicle to promote their CPU chips in 2001, the small format motherboard has become fashionable and adopted by many desktop producers and embedded system builders alike. Care needs to be taken to differentiate the desktop specification from the IPC offerings. A True IPC SBC should be expected to have a production life of at least three to five years. In contrast, the desktop requirement is often to chase specification, resulting in frequent changes and updates. Other popular formats on the Embedded or IPC stage are 3.5" and 5.25" and more recently, the Pico-ITX. Each has its place, dependent on the final application and the facilities required in the target system.

FoldaRap: portable 3D printer

A 3D printer suitable for secret agents?
This is the first 3D printer I’d consider worthy of Ian Fleming’s Q character in the world of 007. The FoldaRap is a derivative of the RepRap project, the first to be a truely portable 3D printer. It is designed to fit within a tough travelling case.

The machine was influenced by Emmanuel Gilloz’s frustration travelling to 3D printing meetups with his machine. The typical A-frame structure of RepRap machines are not particularly compact, nor efficient in their use of space. Gilloz originally put together the RepRap family tree, and after about 6 months of development on the FoldaRap, he’ll now be able to add his own portable creation to the replicator genealogy table.

Piccolo is a pocket-sized stand-alone CNC platform. For less than $70, you can assemble your personal Arduino-compatible kit for tinkering, developing and deploying basic 3D output. Be it plotting quick graffiti, printing a one-off business card on the fly, or multiple Piccolos working together to create a large mural, this kit provides a platform for experimenting with 2D or 3D digital fabrication at a small scale. This open-source design emphasizes simplicity, and is entirely composed of digitally manufactured components and inexpensive off-the-shelf hardware.

Portable 3D printing with the Tantillus
Cute, portable, printable

RepRap aficionado Brad has designed a portable, mini-3D printer called the Tantillus. Not only is it pretty cute, it’s also capable of running on batteries!

The inspiration for the printer came when Brad found that his Prusa was too large to bring with him on holidays, and that full-size 3D printing capability was unnecessary during travel.

As expected, the build area is small (100mm x 100mm x 110mm), but actually isn’t too far off of the original MakerBot Cupcake’s intended usable build area. Also, printable extension panels are planned in case a larger print is required.

The most intriguing planned feature to me is the daisy chain option. Two printers sharing a single set of electronics could be used to mass-produce duplicate sets of prints at a reduced cost. (Like fleet of Tantillus devices printing copies of themselves, for example.)

http://blog.ponoko.com/2012/02/15/portable-3d-printing-with-the-tantillus/

ORD 3D printer kits using MakerSlide now available for pre-order

A mechatronics kit for a clever DIY 3D printer.

The ORD 3D printer from Buildlog.Net that we posted last month is now available for pre-order. It will offered as a mechatronics kit, which means that it does not include the extruder or any electronics. These kits are intended as a starting point for your own project, not as a complete 3D printer, although there is a note on the site that a complete kit may be offered if enough people express an interest.

That being said, it looks like an excellent and highly adaptable system. The two kits are nearly identical except for the length of MakerSlide, so the system scales up and down very easily. The smaller Quantum ORD kit is projected to cost $225-$300 and the larger Hadron is expected to be $275-$350. The reservation fee for either is $30.
