Fix a car bumper dent with some easy DIY
Allison Blackburn
If you have ever had a dent on your car bumper you will know how
maddening it is, more so if it wasn’t your own fault. It’s bad enough if
you prang the bumper but if you park in what you think is a safe spot
and then return to the car to find your bumper messed up, it’s annoying
to say the least. In some cases the dent may not be as bad as it first
looks, however it looks unsightly and you will want to get it fixed. The
downside is that taking it to a mechanic will cost you a pretty penny
and of course it can take time to get the car booked in, meanwhile you
have to drive around in a car with a crunched bumper. Well not anymore
as you can fix a car bumper dent with easy DIY.

Whaddaya get when you cross a quadcopter with a plane? The HQ UAV
Ben Coxworth
If you need a drone aircraft that can hover in one spot or perform
vertical take-offs and landings (VTOL), then a multi-rotor contraption
such as a quadcopter is the way to go. Should you be looking for
something that can cover long distances as quickly and efficiently as
possible, however, then a more traditional propellor-driven fixed-wing
airplane will serve you better. So, what if you want both? Well, that’s
where Latitude Engineering’s Hybrid Quadrotor UAV (unmanned aerial
vehicle) comes in. Putting it simply, it’s a quadcopter/fixed-wing
combo.
Até já vi uma versão de uma Ferramenta para Salvamento bem anterior a esta, e dum Inventor Português, mas confesso que esta, agora, é a melhor de todas!

T3 Tactical Auto Rescue Tool looks mean, but is made to help
Ben Coxworth
Yes, it does indeed look like the freaky love-child of an Uzi and a
Bowie knife, but the T3 Tactical Auto Rescue Tool is actually designed
to save lives. It combines several implements that are aimed at
getting accident victims out of their wrecked cars, as quickly and
efficiently as possible.
The T3 was created by New York City paramedic Avi Goldstein, and
although he designed it primarily with first responders in mind, it can
also be used by drivers and passengers for self-rescue.
It includes an LED light for seeing what needs to be done in night-time
accidents, along with a folding stainless steel hook blade for slicing
through seat belts “in a single pull,” a folding half-serrated blade for
cutting whatever else might be in the way, and a spring-loaded window
punch for breaking tempered glass. While similar products feature
hammer-style window punches, Goldstein points out that inside of a
twisted vehicle, there isn’t always room to swing one of those.

Leopardwood
An exotic hardwood with naturally spotted coloring
Leopardwood is also known as Lacewood, or Brazilian
Lacewood. It is primarily sourced from Chile and Brazil. The heartwood
varies from light orange to reddish brown. The appearance is
highly-figured with a “lace-like” appearance. The wood is of medium
strength and bends well. It is prized for inlays, fine furniture and
decorative pieces. It is an excellent choice for turning. Leopardwood
weighs around 39 lbs per cubic foot.
Because this is a natural material, the color and pattern will vary
slightly from piece to piece. Please see the thickness tolerance below
and note that thickness will change based on conditions like humidity.
MIT's new software increases the speed and flexibility of multi-material 3D printing
Lakshmi Sandhana
Although 3D printing technology has progressed in leaps and bounds in
recent years, most printers are still only capable of printing a solid
object out of a single material. That's fine if you want to produce a
plastic object with the same density throughout, but what if you want to
use multiple materials in the one object or alter its internal
architecture to vary its density and therefore its flexibility? A team
at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) has
developed a new software pipeline that makes both these things possible.
Boas notícias para os mais cépticos, o Automóvel/Avião, Terrafugia já foi demonstrado em Público, o que faz sempre um belo Espectáculo:
Terrafugia Transition flying car makes first public flights
David Szondy
There was a ray of hope recently for those who are looking forward to a car that’s a bit more Blade Runnery as Terrafugia's Transition flying car
made its first public flights at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
There, the Terrafugia team conducted two 20-minute flight demonstrations
and also showed off the capability for the Transition's wings to be
folded up so it can be driven about like a car.
Classed as a light sports plane by the United States Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA), the Transition is also a road-legal vehicle.
Technically, it isn’t a flying car so much as a roadable airplane
capable of carrying a pilot/driver and one passenger. The company sees
it as a way for private pilots to cover that “last mile” between a small
airport and their destination without using a taxi of hauling along a
motor scooter.

Electric Imp Garage Door Opener
MidnightMaker
I've lost count of the number of times we have set off on a trip only to
have to turn back to check to see if we remembered to close the garage
door. This ‘ible shows you how to connect the Electric Imp to your
garage door opener, how to control your garage door from your iPhone and
how to check the status of the door from anywhere. Every time the door
is opened or closed a sensor is triggered, and a text is sent to a
predefined group of phones so that you are always "in the know" as to
door status. Commercially available options and kickstarter campaigns
abound but this solution is easy enough to hack together yourself for
small $ outlay.

Artist transforms flat lasercut designs into 3D installations with heat forming
Ponoko project by Jenny Balisle
Bay Area artist Jenny Balisle works in three distinct mediums: painting, pen and ink, and sculptural installation made from heated acrylic sheets.
As explained in her artist statement, her body of work is
“conceptually linked by dichotomous relationships — simple and complex,
beautiful and grotesque, micro and macro perspectives, and natural and
manmade environments.”
Her acrylic sculptures embody this concept by turning
completely flat pieces of acrylic, which she lasercuts with Ponoko, into
much more complex three-dimensional sculptures.
To achieve this, Jenny uses a heat forming technique. “It’s a
delicate process,” she says. “I have to take great care not to crack or
warp the acrylic or yellow the white surface.”

Seal system aims to keep kids from drowning
Ben Coxworth
It can’t be easy, being a lifeguard at a pool full of children. The kids
that catch your attention are going to be the ones who are splashing
and yelling, whereas the ones that you really need to look for could be
silently slipping below the surface, where they won’t be seen or heard.
North Carolina-based emergency physician Graham Snyder decided that
those potential drowning victims needed more attention drawn to their
predicament, so he created the Seal system.

PAL-V flying car makes successful first test flight
By Darren Quick
With the PAL-V last appearing on our pages way back in 2004, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this is just another flying car concept that never made it off the ground. But Dutch company PAL-V Europe NV has been busy in the past seven years having finalized the design concept in 2008 and testing a driving prototype in 2009. Now the flying-driving prototype has been put through its paces with video of the PAL-V’s recent successful maiden flight now released.

Modern-day aviation pioneer achieves world's first untethered, manned electric helicopter flight
By Loz Blain
It's easy to look back at the history of exploration and aviation and feel like there's no mountains left to climb, that the age of the great pioneers is behind us and we're doomed to a future of LCD tanning and monitor hypnosis. But don't try telling that to Pascal Chretien. On August 12, this electrical/aerospace engineer and helicopter pilot took to the air in the world's first untethered, fully electric manned helicopter flight in a prototype machine that he designed and built almost entirely by himself within a 12 month development period. In his 2 minute, 10 second test flight, Chretien beat aviation giant Sikorsky into the record books - but it was not without significant risk. As the man himself puts it: "in case of crash I stand good chances to end up in kebab form."
In this Robot Dreams video, Hiro Maruoka (Marubeni Systems) shows some complex parts/assemblies produced on Stratasys 3D Printers.
Hiro Maruoka of Marubeni Systems showed us several complex mechanisms that were 3D printed as complete assemblies. The internal gaps and clearances were printed with a soluble material that was easily disolved after the object finished printing.

Home-built LEGO PC donates its computing power to medical research
By Pawel Piejko
Most of the custom-built DIY PCs featuring unusual case mods are made just for fun or fashion. The LEGO-bodied PC by Mike Schropp is quite different, however, despite the fact it looks really impressive. It's a 12-core PC setup consisting of three systems in a single box made of LEGO, with its computing power being donated to medical research and humanitarian projects via IBM's World Community Grid project.

The Model 367 “BiPod” hybrid flying car designed by Burt Rutan
By Darren Quick
The team at Scaled Composites pulled out all the stops to realize the final design of the company's founder and former CTO, Burt Rutan, ahead of his retirement in April earlier this year. In just four months, the Scaled Composites team went from beginning the preliminary design to the first flight of the "BiPod", a hybrid gasoline-electric flying car that grew out of a program to develop a rapid, low-cost electric test bed using as many off-the-shelf components as possible.

EU project looks to the future of personal air transport
By Bridget Borgobello
A European Union project known as myCopter has set aside funds of €4.2 million (US$6.2m) to investigate the possibility of introducing Personal Aerial Vehicles (PAVs) into the skyways of many congested European cities. This coming age of the "flying car" where vehicles leave the roads and launch into the skies promises to solve problems like dramatically rising urban traffic congestion, but it also throws up some formidable challenges - it's these challenges that the myCopter project aims to address.

Pic3D sheet transforms any screen into a glasses-free 3D display
By Pawel Piejko
It seems that those of us who haven't bought a glasses-free 3D gadget yet may have the opportunity to try one anyway. Announced at the Virtual Reality Exhibition in Tokyo, Pic3D is a thin sheet of transparent film, which enables a glasses-free 3D effect after being applied to any screen. Global Wave, the Japanese company that makes the product, claims that it utilizes a lenticular lens system instead of parallax barrier, achieves 90 percent of light transmission, and has a 120-degree of field view.
Using Pic3D film is reportedly quite easy, although a special application needs to be downloaded from Pic3D's website. After installing it on a digital media device, the user must view their footage using the app's built-in video player, to see the stereoscopic 3D effect. Pic3D works with the side-by-side (SbS) 3D video format only, and will work for SbS content on sites such as YouTube.
SoloTrek developers planning two seat electric hybrid Air Car
By Paul Ridden
If you've ever watched your Parrot AR Drone power through the air and wondered what it would be like to be inside such a craft, the announcement of the Air Car project could be the answer you are looking for. The folks behind the development of the SoloTrek/Springtail Exoskeleton Flying Vehicle have revealed plans to create the world's first fuel-electric hybrid flying car.
Michael Moshier and Robert Bulaga of Trek Aerospace are forming a new company to develop the hybrid Air Car, which will combine recent technological advances in materials and electronics with the kind of duct-fan technology that was used in the now-retired Springtail single person vertical take-off-and-landing (VTOL) vehicle.

How The First Crowdsourced Military Vehicle Can Remake the Future of Defense Manufacturing
DARPA's community-designed FLYPMODE car was presented to President Obama last week
The military and defense contractors can learn a lot from the wisdom of the masses, and American fighting forces could be better equipped and better protected if higher-ups would embrace the DIY ethos of ingenuity and agility. At least that’s how Jay Rogers, founder of an automotive firm that just built a military concept vehicle from crowdsourced plans, sees things.
Rogers’ team of designers and engineers at Local Motors in Phoenix built the car, nicknamed FLYPmode, from scratch in less than four months, unveiling it for President Obama last week before delivering it to the military’s mad-science division in Virginia. If makers like Rogers get their way, the first Experimental Crowd-derived Combat Support Vehicle, or XC2V, just might be the future of the military industrial supply chain. But Rogers and his advocates face some hurdles first.
