E começo já com a notícia inquietante, Cientistas que afirmam que se pode projectat o "ego" duma pessoa para outros corpos e até um terceiro braço(!)

Scientists claim that 'self' can relocate to other bodies, or be made to include a third arm
By Ben Coxworth
09:29 February 24, 2011

For millennia, philosophers have debated whether or not the self exists solely in the mind, the body, or both. Well, it's unclear whether this will help clear things up or just muddy the waters further, but Swedish neuroscientists are now claiming that the human brain can add outside objects such as a third arm to one's physical sense of self, and that people can even mentally project their "self" out of their own body and into someone else's. If these findings hold up, the implications for virtual reality, robotics and prostheses could be substantial.

Silver-coated paper could be used for emergency water purification
By Ben Coxworth

14:46 February 24, 2011
Silver is well-known for its antibacterial qualities, which has led to the use of silver nanoparticles in devices such as an experimental water filtration system developed by Stanford University. That system is intended as a relatively permanent setup, and it requires a small electrical current. Researchers from Montreal’s McGill University, however, have come up with a silver-based water treatment system that could conceivably be used instantly, in any place and at any time. While not intended as a routine method of killing water-borne bacteria, it could be very useful in emergency situations such as disaster relief.

400% mais Energia Solar?

HyperSolar concentrator could boost solar cell output by 400 percent

By Ben Coxworth

14:24 February 17, 2011

Solar cells are the most expensive part of a solar panel, so it would follow that if panels could produce the same amount of electricity with less cells, then their prices would come down. In order for panels to be able to do so using existing cell technology, however, they would need to get more light to the fewer cells that they still had. Mounting the panels on the end of vertical poles to get them closer to the sun is one possible approach, that might work in the town of Bedrock or on Gilligan’s Island. A better idea, though, is to apply a clear layer of solar concentrators to the surface of a panel – and that’s just what HyperSolar intends to do.

Can testosterone improve cognition in older women?

By Mary Panjari

21:01 February 17, 2011

For women, the onset of midlife brings with it an array of distressing symptoms related to changes in hormone levels. The risk of dementia increases with age – particularly after the mid-60s – memory loss is a frequent complaint and quality of life is compromised as a result. Using a novel "patchless" patch method of drug delivery, researchers at the Women’s Health Research Program Monash University, Australia, have been investigating whether restoring testosterone levels in older women to those of younger women will improve brain function and ultimately protect against dementia.

Researchers stumble on potential new treatment for hair loss

By Darren Quick

21:29 February 17, 2011

While conducting research into brain-gut interactions, a team led by researchers from UCLA and the Veterans Administration may have inadvertently stumbled across a new treatment for hair loss. During an investigation into the affect of stress on gastrointestinal function, the researchers believe they may have found a chemical compound that induces hair growth by blocking a stress-related hormone associated with hair loss.

AeroVironment, the California-based company behind the largest, highest and longest flying unmanned aircraft system (UAS), the Global Observer, has now achieved a remarkable technical milestone with a much smaller aircraft. With its "Nano Hummingbird" the company has for the first time achieved controlled precision hovering and fast-forward flight of a two-wing, flapping wing aircraft that carries its own energy source and relies only on its flapping wings for propulsion and control.

The hand-made final concept demonstrator Nano Hummingbird has a wingspan of 16 cm (6.5 in) and weighs just 19 g (2/3 oz), which is less than the weight of a AA battery. Into this tiny and lightweight package the AeroVironment UAS team has managed to cram all the systems required for flight, including batteries, motors, communications systems and even a video camera.

3D Printed Shoes From Scans of Your Feet

by Ponoko on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 1:31pm

Fashion design students Naim Josefi and Souzan Youssouf worked with Materialise to make the Melonia shoe. They use a 3D scan of your feet to make these custom-printed shoes. In spite of their skeletal, almost fragile look, they are strong enough to walk on, as was demonstrated by models on the fashion runway.

Solowheel: self-balancing last mile transport for the upstanding commuter

By Paul Ridden

The fat wheeled eniCycle, the stylish and graceful U3 from Honda or the slightly scary prospect of the UnoMoto have all shared more in common than being one-wheeled, self-balancing personal transport solutions. They've all had somewhere for the user to sit. Inventist's Solowheel is a little different – you ride this electric unicycle standing upright, like a Segway or skateboard. It has a useful carry handle and fold-away foot platforms, is gyro-stabilized and the Li-ion batteries offer a range of about 12 miles between charges.

Scientists create a real-life thinking cap

by Terrence Aym

Scientists at the University of Sydney's Center for the Mind in Australia have created a real-life thinking cap. They did it by jolting the brain with electricity flowing from a strange headpiece with rubber straps and twisted tubes.

Although to get a real brainstorm users must wear the bizarre device on their heads, researchers insist its worth it. They believe it will help people boost their creativity and insight.

It works by suppressing the electrical flow in the left side of the brain and forcing the right side to pick up the slack. Theoretically, the increased use of the right half of the brain—the part that drives creativity and imagination-will boost the user's right brain power.

NASA Releases First 360-Degree View of Entire Sun

By Clara Moskowitz

NASA has released the first 360-degree view of the entire sun today, just in time for Super Bowl Sunday.

The photo comes courtesy of NASA's twin STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory) spacecraft, which aligned exactly opposite each other around the sun to capture the image.

The ability to see the whole sun, front to back, will allow scientists to better understand complicated solar weather patterns and plan for future robotic or crewed spacecraft missions throughout the solar system, researchers said.

A new bridge concept incorporates wind and solar energy into its design, generating 40 million kilowatt-hours per year — and looking pretty slick to boot.

The Solar Wind concept would use the space between an existing viaduct in southern Italy to install 26 wind turbines, which designers Francesco Colarossi, Giovanna Saracino and Luisa Saracino say could provide 36 million kilowatt hours of electricity every year.

Uma Cidade Flutuante!
Floating megacity designed for the banks of the Mississippi
By Darren Quick
Arcologies, which are essentially entire cities crammed into a single high population density megastructure, are still the realm of science fiction – or games such as Simcity. But with the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina ongoing, a group of designers have come up with the proposal for just such a structure designed to sit on the bank of the Mississippi. Called the New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH), the structure would house 40,000 residents along with all services and amenities that would allow them to live their entire lives within its walls if they so desired.

Freerider Skatecycle combines snowboard, skateboard and casterboard
By Darren Quick
As devices such as the Pulse Kick ‘n’ Go Xcelerator and T-Board show, designers are always looking for new and interesting (and hopefully profitable) ways to provide kids with the various cuts and scrapes that are an essential part of growing up. The latest pretender to the throne still occupied by bikes, skateboards and scooters is the Freerider Skatecycle – a two wheeled recreational vehicle that allegedly combines the “foot control of snowboarding, the balanced turning of skateboarding, and the nimble, undulating movements of casterboarding.”

While many teenagers are content to sit at home playing computer games, this one has set his sights on something a little more ambitious.
Eric Jacqmain, from Indiana in the US, covered an ordinary fibreglass satellite dish with 5,800 tiny mirror tiles - and made his very own 'death ray'.
When aligned correctly it can generate a heat spot a couple of centimetres across, with an intensity of 5,000 shining suns, the 19-year-old claims.
