3D Printed Prosthetics As Affordable Limb Replacements

Geoffrey Craig

As proof positive of the potential inherent in 3D printing prosthetic limbs can be produced at such a low price as to be within reach of millions of previously underserved populations. The use of the technology to manufacture bespoke prosthetic limbs is a revolutionary breakthrough for the millions of amputees of the world, in rich and poor nations alike.

Cycle Chaser
Matt Richardson
Project animations from the rear of your bicycle. The framerate depends on the speed you are moving at.

A couple years ago, I created a dynamic bike headlight with a Raspberry Pi and a small, battery-operated projector. I’ve been eager to explore what else I could do with a projector and a Raspberry Pi on my bike, so I created the Cycle Chaser.

Which 3D Printer should I buy?
is the most common question we at 3D Hubs are asked.
We reached out to our global community of Hubs to learn from their experience and see what they thought of the 3D Printers they own. The 2015 3D Printer Guide is based on the reviews of 2,279 verified 3D Printer owners. Their collective 1623 years of 3D Printing experience coupled with 317,000 prints completed on 235 different 3D Printer models, makes this the most comprehensive guide available.

Folded Plate Chair #3B

This is a design for an "origami style" plywood chair. After doing some initial prototypes with various sheet goods and continuous hinges I settled on this design as a good balance of affordability and quality.

ROK'n Roadways adds a dynamic twist to your adventure.

ROK'n Roadways is an awesome expansion set that allows you to connect and expand your Rokenbok world. Watch the road build it self as the roadway comes together for a loader to drive up and over just in time.

N55's spaceframe tricycle can be built at home from plans

By Bridget Borgobello

Danish design studio N55, in collaboration with German designer Till Wolfer, has created a series of open-source human-powered vehicle designs that can be built at home using basic tools and materials. Dubbed XYZ Spaceframe Vehicles, the models incorporate weather-resistant and lightweight frames that are made using standard aluminum tubes. Those tubes are assembled using simple stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts. “Unlike the singular load-bearing tube seen in traditional bike structures, the main structure is an orthogonal spaceframe of standard aluminum tubes,” says N55.

Popinator: The mouth-seeking popcorn cannon

By Jonathan Fincher

You know you're living in the future when even the simple act of throwing a piece of popcorn in the air and catching it in your mouth gets a mechanical upgrade. Thanks to snack maker, Popcorn Indiana, eating popcorn is now as "easy" as asking for it and having the company's new Popinator fire a piece right into your mouth.
The Popinator was designed to make eating popcorn more fun and as a way to munch while keeping your hands free. It uses a binaural microphone system – similar to the way humans hear – to detect when the word "pop" is spoken and pinpoint where the sound came from. Then it flips up a small barrel and launches a piece of popcorn in the air for the person to catch in their mouth. Each piece of popcorn has a different size and shape though, so it might take a little maneuvering to snatch out of the air, but it still looks remarkably accurate.

Flying Scotsman's "Beastie" to be first human-powered vehicle to achieve 100 mph on the flat?

By James Holloway

Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree is building a special sort of bicycle. He's building it in his own kitchen without a lick of research assistance to inform the design. Why might research assistance be useful? Because with this bicycle, dubbed Beastie, Obree intends not only to break the human-powered vehicle land speed record, but also hopes to be the first person to break 100 mph (161 km/h). But then, Obree's never been one to do things the easy way.

Do Dailybrink, uma Notícia sobre uma Mulher com Coragem, Stacy Zoern, que é Autora, Advogada, Empresária... E um GRANDE Exemplo!

Enterpreneur with Drive
INTERVIEW by GARY GOLDMAN
If you’ve ever had to purchase a car, then you know that your options are limitless: regular or hybrid, compact or full-size, convertible, SUV, minivan… Unfortunately, wheelchair-bound individuals do not have the luxury of choosing an auto because there is simply no market catered directly to them. Stacy Zoern, an author-turned-attorney-turned-entrepreneur, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy when she was two. While Stacy quickly knew that spending her life in a wheelchair was never going to stop her from achieving her dreams, she found herself limited by a lack of proper (and affordable) vehicles. That’s when she decided to bring one to the market herself.

You may want to replace your fly swatter

It started as an idea — to create a non-toxic solution to pest control. The BUG-A-SALT was born. From there, it became a campaign — to raise $15,000 to put the initial batch into production. Since then, the campaign has raised over $430,000 — with more than 15,500 BUG-A-SALT’s pre-ordered. It turns out that shooting flies with salt was an incredible idea — it just needed a platform and an audience.

Berkeley Lab Makes Cookstoves For Ethiopia

Thousands of the stoves are being distributed this year through the Darfur Stove Project's partnership with Oxfam America and the Sustainable Action Group, a Sudanese organization.

What does the European Climate Exchange in London have to do with the rural Yaya Gulelle district in Ethiopia?

Everything-if all goes well in some test chambers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory this summer.

Ethiopia has experienced severe deforestation in the last century. Its natural forest cover has plummeted from 35 percent at the start of the 20th century to just 3 percent today. While agricultural practices, including coffee production, are one of the main causes, collecting wood for cooking fuel is also a major contributing factor.

Secret Ingredient In Honey That Kills Bacteria

Ultimately, researchers isolated the defensin-1 protein, which is part of the honey bee immune system and is added by bees to honey. After analysis, the scientists concluded that the vast majority of honey's antibacterial properties come from that protein.

Sweet news for those looking for new antibiotics: A new research published in the July 2010 print edition of the FASEB Journal explains for the first time how honey kills bacteria.

Specifically, the research shows that bees make a protein that they add to the honey, called defensin-1, which could one day be used to treat burns and skin infections and to develop new drugs that could combat antibiotic-resistant infections.
