Diamond Hotend makes multi-color 3D printing possible from a single nozzle

Entrepreneurs in Denmark have taken another step towards improving the general usability of 3D printers with the Diamond Hotend, a single 3D extruder unit that can mix and melt three filaments together and produce items in a rainbow of colors.
The most common type of home or hobbyist 3D printer is the Fused Deposition Modeler, or FDM type of printer, which works by melting a plastic filament with a heater element (the "hot end") and extruding the melted plastic out of a small nozzle, much like icing a cake.
Current hot ends can only handle one filament at a time, so the types of 3D printers that can handle multiple colors require a different hot end for each one. This causes a number of problems: the nozzles must be exactly the same height from the work surface, or they will damage each other’s work; the distance between the nozzles must be carefully calibrated and the printer’s software must make corrections to keep the output in the same place.

Many of us use plastic in our projects, but did you know you can melt down and reuse much of the plastic found in your house? In this instructable you'll see how to recycle plastic to be reused for whatever you want.

For this method we will be reusing high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic. You can identify this plastic by the recycling symbol on the bottom of most plastic containers. HDPE will be identified by a small "2" in the center of the recycling symbol, and will sometimes even be accompanied by "HDPE" written next to the symbol.
When compared to ABS plastic:
HDPE:
  • density - .958g/cc
  • tensile yield strength - 20.6MPa
  • melting point - 129 C
ABS:
  • density - 1.05g/cc
  • tensile yield strength - 41.5MPa
  • melting point - 220 C
While HDPE is not as strong as more widely used polymers such as ABS, it is good for low stress applications such as project enclosures, lightweight mounting solutions, and more. And the best part, it's free!

Hello, In this instructable I will show you how to make a very low cost, lightweight 3D printer. This 3D printer is about the same size of the printrbot simple, but has a bigger print bed at 6x 5.5x 4 Inches, weighs less than the printrbot simple at about 5.1 pounds, the printrbot simple weighs around 7 pounds.
New instructions should be much easier to follow and I've included more photos.

In the following steps we will show you how you can use Reactive Blocks to program a ready to run Java application that sends SMS when motion is detected. With Reative Blocks you make Java SE applications so the alarm application can be deployed on any machine with Java SE and a camera attached or integrated. The application is easily deployed on the Pi since the Raspbian release has Oracle Java pre-installed. .
This is what you need:
  1. Raspberry Pi Model B+ with Raspbian OS
  2. Standard USB camera
  3. Ethernet cable
  4. Screen and keyboard for the Pi
  5. Windows or MAC computer with JDK
  6. Reactive Blocks, an Eclipse plugin, to program the application.

You can use the technique outlined in this Instructable to make very large lenses, lenses that produce special effects, and sculptural lenses with freeform shapes. You'll need to know how to use a CNC router or have access to a nice 3D printer. With one of the two you'll be able to start making lenses right away.

Long Bed Printed 3d Printer

The Long Bed 3d Printer was created to see how much of a 3d printer could be printed. That lead me to design a frame that could be printed on a heated bed, soon discovered I needed a larger build surface. After making a way to accurately control a larger bed, I had the maximum size that the frame pieces could be. By combining different parts I was able to get the main frame down to 9 pieces.

Gigabot Proves Even 3D Printing is Bigger in Texas

After their wildy successful first Kickstarter back in 2013, re:3D’s latest iteration of Gigabot, an extra large 3D printer, is Open Gigabot, which currently has two days left on its Kickstarter campaign. The Open Gigabot files are being released on Wevolver, a social enterprise for open source hardware.
Make: spoke with re:3D Co-Founder Katy Jeremko about the ecological inspiration behind the jumbo-sized printers. She says that re:3D wanted to “allow individuals worldwide to 3D print composting toilets or other human-scale solutions from trash.” The team decided to focus on developing a toilet printer, now known as the Gigabot. (Jeremko mentioned that they later found 3D printing with trash to be extremely difficult!)

Um Robot Cortador de espuma, Actobotics, e 3 novos Materiais de Impressão

In the course of making stuff for myself and my customers, I frequently perform tedious tasks that could be automated. One of these is cutting foam sheets from a large roll. In the picture you see the roll of foam I start with and the desired end result, which is a stack of 12" by 71/4" pieces of foam. I've used paper cutters, rulers and razor blades, and so on and always dreaded when I ran out and had to cut more.
I've been experimenting with the Actobotics™ robot assembly system from ServoCity, and while cutting my last batch of foam realized that I should be able to make an affordable machine to do this for me. The second picture shows the result: the Robot Foam Cutter.
While you may not need a machine to do the same thing, this Instructable may give you some ideas for automating some of the tedious things you need to do.
UPDATE: I've attached a bill of materials (BOM) spreadsheet with prices in the parts section. My total cost for this project, not counting parts on hand, was about $300. Depending on your frame of reference, this may seem scary expensive or pocket change. For me time is money, and sometimes I have more money than time. For the amount of time this has saved me in the past, and will in the future, it is well worth it.

Taulman3D Releases New, Super Strong Nylon Filament

Tom Martz of Taulman3D joined the crowds at the Midwest RepRap Fest this past weekend in Goshen, Indiana. While there, Tom took to the stage to present his company’s brand new Alloy 910, a high-strength nylon filament. Alloy 910 came about after Taulman’s corporate clients asked for a stronger nylon formulation with less flexibility than many other nylons. Tom and his team managed to formulate a new filament that has a tensile strength of 8,100 PSI, and only 25% maximum elongation (compared to ABS 5,800 PSI and 30% elongation). The Taulman team also claims that 910 has a comparable shrinkage as PLA, making it a great material for printing large rugged prints.

This instructable will guide you to build a 3D scanner for less than $30, or even $12 if you already have a USB webcam.
Seeing the price tag and limitations of commercial scanners I decided to challenge myself to build my own. It had to be cheaper and easy for anybody to build one using a 3D printer.
Result
The "Sardauscan" is a laser scanner, comparable to other professional laser scanners but for less than 20-30 times the price, and it has twice the number of lasers.
My design principles were:
· Keep it simple
· Keep it low cost
· Make it evolutive
· Provide a complete solution
The scanner is completely open source and open hardware:
· The "Sardauscan" software is written in C# - the full source code is available.
· You can write plugins for your own hardware or for your tasks.
The software allows you to scan, smooth, build meshes and export to various formats.

Triple Threat: BoXZY Puts Printing, Milling, and Lasers in One Small Box

On my way to the Midwest RepRap Fest, I stopped in at HackPittsburgh to meet up with the BoXZY team and take a look at their new machine in person. BoXZY is doing well on Kickstarter; with its promise of being an all in one 3D printer, milling machine, and laser etcher, it’s enticing backers. The BoXZY features a thick aluminum case that creates a stiff structure to help support its milling function. All movements are achieved with precision ball screws instead of the belts often found in 3D printers. I expressed my concern about the exposed screws getting “gummed up” from the milling operation, but the team ensured me that through their testing they have not seen any contamination in their bearings from milled material, and that they are working on a system to help ensure this.

Tiko "unibody" 3D printer hits Kickstarter

Tiko, a new budget 3D printer seeking funding through Kickstarter, takes a number of interesting design choices to minimize costs without sacrificing the quality of the print – chief among these is the use of a cheap, single-part "unibody" frame that requires very little calibration.
Ordinarily, the frame is one of the most expensive components of a 3D printer. To allow for precision printing, the multiple beams that make it up need to be machined to a high standard and then regularly aligned during their lifetime to ensure a consistent performance. This raises costs and makes it so that users often need to spend time calibrating the beams before they can start using their printers.
The Tiko gets rid of these complications with an enclosed "unibody" design that incorporates the pre-aligned beams on the inside of its frame. According to its creators, the result is a strong and lightweight chassis that is virtually impossible to misalign and that can 3D-print with accuracy (down to 50 microns) despite the lack of high-precision components.

Retouch3D cleans up the glitches on 3D-printed items

If you've never used a 3D printer, then you might not be aware of the fact that the objects they create don't always emerge in their final, flawless form. They often contain small printing errors, fringes of stray material, and supporting structures that need to be removed. Retouch3D uses heat to melt away those imperfections.
People already use things such as soldering irons, razor blades and sandpaper to finesse their 3D-printed creations. According to the designers of Retouch3D, however, their device allows for much more precise control.
This is partly because its heat level can be set to the melting point of the printing material in question – examples include things like PLA (polylactic acid), ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), resins or even wax. Users can look up those temperatures on the company website.

A little over two months ago, I found plans for this mini lathe in an issue of Shopnotes, and decided that I would try to build it in time to be entered in the Tools Contest. I had never built a wooden machine before, but seeing lots of them over on woodgears.ca, I was very excited to try one on my own. I am only 15 years old now, so my experience in woodworking is quite limited, but I still managed to complete it without too many problems along the way. Along with the lack of experience, I also do not have a large lumber supply. I built the entire lathe out of scrap plywood found in the garbage. My dad occasionally finds cut-off pieces of 3/4 inch plywood on job sites, and having a few around was enough to complete the project. (The only parts I had to purchase was a longer v-belt, and some large nuts and bolts.)
