5-axis 3D printing support test

Øyvind Kallevik Grutle

This is the result of my master thesis at the University of Oslo, at department for robotics.
The printer is a modified RepRap Ormerod, with two added axis (A and C).
This master thesis have been a proof of concept, but since it was working I decided to try two hypotheses, is it possible to print without support (what you see in this video) and is it possible to make a smooth finish on a surface which are in another plane than the xy-plane (what you see in the two other videos).
All the g-code for these parts are basically hand written (with the help of java). I have been using spherical coordinate system to compute the paths and therefore all the parts are round.
With the exception of the 5-axis system that moves along the y-axis almost all the parts are from the RepRap Pro Ormerod 1.
The videos are at 40X speed.

Formlabs Releases Tough New Resin for 3D Printing

Matt Stultz
One of the criticisms often leveraged against SLA 3D printing is that the resins used are not strong enough for real world, useful applications. Formlabs has been steadily releasing new materials that each provide a new property to their users. Now, Formlabs has added a new resin to join Clear, Flexible, and Castable: Tough.
Formlabs claims that their Tough resin for their Form 1+ printer, will exhibit similar strain and impact resistance as an ABS printed part. They have provided multiple sample images showing their new resin being put to use in applications not usually seen in SLA prints.

Survive in style (5) - DIY Aspirin

bricobart
One of my worst ennemies - even more worse than ice cubes or coca cola that try to ruin my single malt - is something really vicious.
Headache. Since many years it's one of my closest - unwilled - friends. When I'm stressed it's there, when I'm tired it's there, when I drink too much it's there and when I'm drunk because I've been tired of being stressed, it's even more there.
Instead of attacking the cause of this pain, I prefer blowing the result. Totally me.
And so I'm taking pills, sometimes. Quite innocent stuff, but nevertheless a few hundred pills a year...
I know, it IS really bad and one day these chemicals are going to do bad things to me. Maybe The Evil is already there.
Whatever.
One of the most classic methods to fight pain, and headache in particular, is aspirin.
Since I like to think two steps in advance, I know that whenever I run out of pills in the outdoors, there's always a way to make this medicine by myself. Easy.

OSVehicle’s Tabby EVO: Build This Open-Source EV in an Hour
Mike Senese
The OSVehicle team wants to revolutionize the way the world makes its transportation, and today introduces a new platform that will help bring auto building to the community and individual level.
Named Tabby EVO, the vehicle can be built in just an hour in a moderately equipped workshop. It features an 80v/15 kW electric drivetrain with a range of 87 miles and a top speed of 80 mph. It has a 93-inch wheelbase and can be configured for 2-4 passengers. Its upgraded frame and suspension help qualify it for L6e, L7e, and M1 licensing for street-legal use in Europe and the US, as well as allow it to be used for off-road purposes.

Resin Casting Tutorial - Moldmaking
seeblack
When I started to make my Umi costume, it soon became apparent that I would have to make my own custom molds. You can usually buy or find something to cast common gem shapes, but sometimes the size you need won't be commercially available. In the above pictures, all the front tabard gems, headband gems, and waist cincher gems were made from custom molds using silicone rubber from Smooth-On. (The small ovals and small circle gems were made from a Michael's resin casting tray and a generic $1 paint tray respectively.

Upgrading a CNC milling machine Part 1

stuartChilds

Compact CNC machines have been around for a long time and there are affordable and often well built units available to buy from surplus suppliers and via auction. Provided a machine is of good quality and has not been abused the hardware will likely work for many years to come.
Though the mechanical side may be serviceable it can be a different story when it comes to the software; the machines may not come with their original control computers, if they do this may not boot or may be missing the security 'dongle' for the control software. In addition there have been numerous improvements in motor drive technology in recent years.
We have a Denford Novamill 3-axis mill that came with a rusty old computer that did not boot up. From initial inspection the mill itself looked promising, leaving us with the challenge of connecting a new computer with new software to run the machine.
In this first post we will determine how our machine is wired and bring it up to date with new stepper motor drive electronics, and with a brand new embedded control computer.

Watch Handibot Cut 3D Chess Pieces
Nathan Hurst
The portable Shopbot CNC tool, Handibot, fits on a rotary indexer, churning out extra-large chess pieces from acrylic in the middle of Maker Faire. The environment is loud, and the shop vacs are running almost constantly, but engineer Ryan Sturmer says it’s the perfect environment to demo the tool.
“We have taken the internal electronic and software framework of our tool, and replaced it with something that is web capable, that you can access from your mobile device,” he says. “Your CNC tool will actually have an app.”
It’s targeted at Makers. Shopbot now has open-source FabMo software, a digital fabrication platform for PC, Mac, Linux, and mobile, and Sturmer hopes to see developers building apps for it.

Brutal!
Isto  merece um grande MUÁHÁHÁHÁ!

Homemade liquid nitrogen generator
imsmooth

Did you ever think you could make liquid nitrogen in your own garage? This is an industrial process so how can an individual do this? Still doubt me? Intrigued? Read on.
As a lover of science I tried to think of a challenging project that was out of the ordinary. After going through the internet web and Youtube I realized that no one had made liquid nitrogen in his home. Yes, I did see some videos where some would use a Stirling Cooler from a cryorefrigerator and use this to condense nitrogen on the exterior of the cold-head. While one is making liquified gas, this is done using a prefabricated machine. I wanted to make the machine that liquefies the gas. Furthermore, a cryocooler has a very low production rate. You will only get about 500 - 1000ml per day. On the following pages I will walk you through the basics of how to build your own liquid nitrogen generator. Using easily obtained materials you can liquefy nitrogen or air. The unit cools to -320F in under 50 minutes. The production rate is about 350 cc/hr.

Resin casting gears for power wheels
realjohnnybravo
This is my very first instructable and I hope you will enjoy it.
Please any mistakes caused by my bad english. :-)
Some of you will ask me the question, why not just buy a ready to go gear from the shop or ebay for the usual $19,95. You don't need to ask me that, as I have produced these gears as POC for myself to know if it works this way and if I am able to it. Maybe some tim will come and I will need the procedure to make some gears quick and will not be able to buy any replacement parts. Also remember, these parts are much stronger than that you can get in your store.

Make a Graphene Supercapacitor
quicksilv3rflash

This Instructable (loosely) follows the method of graphene production described by C&EN, who cite a paper published by Parvez, Wu, et. al. In the paper (Exfoliation of Graphite into Graphene in Aqueous Solutions of Inorganic Salts), it is explained that putting a graphite electrode and a platinum electrode into a solution of inorganic salts (ammonium sulfate works best, they say) with a 10V supply (graphite = anode, platinum = cathode) causes the graphite to be torn apart by electrochemical activity to become graphene! Graphene has attracted much hype and study recently. One of its near-term applications may be in high density supercapacitors.

40mm Burst Cannon
Mrballeng

This little cannon is powered by bursting a rubber diaphragm with a bicycle pump. I cut the diaphragms from an old bicycle inner tube. You can double them up or burst one at a time. It uses 40mm foam practice golf balls for ammo. You can also use it with just the pump but it doesn't fire with near as much force.
This is not my original idea. A few years ago I saw this rocket launching toy on TV. If you make this you could use the same replacement diaphragms.

Da Ficção Científica para a Realidade

Eu lembro-me destas máquinas nos filme e jogos Dune, Ficção Científica, tiravam umidade do ar do Planeta-Deserto, e armazenavam-na no subsolo;

Device that harvests water from thin air wins the James Dyson Award

By Bridget Borgobello

Young Melbourne-based inventor Edward Linacre has won the 2011 James Dyson Award, making it the second year in a row where the prestigious prize has gone to an Aussie. Linacre stole this year's competition with his Airdrop irrigation concept that collects water from thin air. The Swinburne University of Technology design graduate was driven to transform an ancient cooling technique into a new sub-surface irrigation system, following the enduring Australian drought that saw high levels of farmer suicide along Australia's Murray- Darling Basin.

Versatile new material combines "best qualities" of glass and resin

By Randolph Jonsson

Synthetic resins start out as viscous liquids that eventually solidify or "cure" into clear or translucent solids. These materials, which combine the desirable properties of strength, durability and light weight, are so useful that you can find them in thousands of applications, particularly aircraft, automobiles and electronic circuits. But for all that versatility, there's one thing that's remained elusive: once cured, resins can not be reshaped. Now, a team from France's National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS), led by award-winning physicist Ludwik Leibler, has developed an inexpensive and easily-produced material that is not only reshapable (like glass), but also repairable and recyclable, again, like glass. That's a potential boon for the auto body industry alone, and the possibilities for other uses are seemingly endless.

Sculptures made with motion capture, 3D printing, and bronze casting

From motion to object with digital tools.

Sculptural Motion is a project by Mathew Schwartz involving technology, sculpture, dance, and martial arts. First he used motion capture and to transform “beautiful” motions of arms and legs from dance and martial arts into forms. These forms were then 3D printed before being cast in bronze and finished. Keep reading past the jump for a video and images of each step.
