Fabbing em São Paulo! E o ZW3D, Câmara Raspi, Getjar, e Cubify

https://www.facebook.com/groups/digifabusp/

The world’s first public demo of the Raspberry Pi camera

Pete Wood

Beer and Sausages weren't the only thing on the menu during my trip to the Electronica show in Munich Germany last week. I also served up another large slice of Raspberry Pi, wowing visitors with the crystal clear video and other cool things you can do with this low cost pocket sized Linux computer. This time however we were lucky to host the world’s first public demonstration of the Raspberry Pi video camera. The camera module is a 5 megapixel camera phone sensor that plugs into the Raspberry Pi via the onboard camera connector interface. Using CSI for data and I2C for control, the camera module will allow users to record 1080p at 30 frames per second in H264 video format.

Dust Recovery
audreyobscura
Dust is the messy by-product of being a maker. If you are working around power tools for any extended amount of time, you are sure to coated in a fine silt, so is the rest of your stuff.

This guide outlines how a few ways to get rid of the dust in your shop, or project space. Check out these mutant shop vacs, and custom attachments to bust every last piece of dust in your shop.

Do you have an excellent Dust Collection System not in this guide? Message me, and share :)

Aproveitem :)

Toshiba unveils four-legged nuclear plant inspection robot

Jason Falconer

Toshiba has unveiled a four-legged inspection robot, which will carry out work at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, where people cannot go. The newly developed robot – simply called a Quadruped walking robot – comes equipped with a smaller wheeled robot that can be deployed to navigate hard-to-reach areas. The legged robot can negotiate stairs, uneven terrain, and is able to avoid low-lying obstacles.

ATOMS bricks convert LEGO sets and other toys into iPhone-controlled monsters
James Holloway

Michael Rosenblatt, design lead behind the first iPod touch, has a point to make about toys. Not all toys. Just the best kind: the ones that enable children (and grown-ups, let's be honest) to create things, be it from LEGO, K-NEX, crayons, paints or Play-Doh. The thing is, they're generally a little on the inert side. With ATOMS from ATOMS Express Toys, Rosenblatt is hoping to redress the balance with a series of modules that can be fitted to other toys (including LEGO) to effectively turn them into moving and sensing robots.

Innovate Salone

How do you transform societies where development and innovation are part of an intrinsic cultural fabric?  How can you transform individuals from the passive role of users of technological advancements to active makers of the technology and solutions that will  impact their nation?

We believe the answer lies in the youth and by instilling in them passion for the ingenuity and the diligence, required for  innovation.  This is exactly what Innovate Salone has done and is continuing to do. Innovate Salone is about the Now and Future of Sierra Leone.  We challenge Sierra Leonean youths to design the solutions to complex problems in their local and national communities.

In the first year of implementation, Innovate Salone supported and mentored over 300 secondary students students that are successfully develop prototypes including a locally fabricated FM radio station from recycled and used electronic and metals. Over 70 applications that proposed technological and educational solutions in areas such as Health, Energy and Education were submitted from seven districts in Sierra Leone.

Makerbot launches retail store with 3D photo booth

Jason Falconer

Makerbot is holding the grand opening of its first retail store today, and it has partnered with ShapeShot to provide a novel 3D photo booth. The system uses digital cameras to capture your mug from a variety of positions, then analyzes those shots to create a three-dimensional digital model. Visitors can subsequently have 3D prints made at the store, including a bust of their very own face.
"This is beyond digital photography – it is the future – and to be able to create a 3D image of yourself is just amazing," said Bre Pettis, CEO and co-founder of MakerBot Industries. "We've had celebrities and musicians come in and get a 3D Portrait made. It's fun, it's inexpensive, and it's totally cool."

DreamVendor 3D printer vending machine turns students' ideas into reality

Darren Quick

While the explosion in the popularity of consumer 3D printers has been enabled by cheaper and cheaper devices, they’re still beyond the reach of the average university student. But students at Virginia Tech need not worry about such monetary concerns when looking to turn their ideas into a physical reality thanks to the DreamVendor 3D printer vending machine located in Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering. (And no, the machine doesn't vend 3D printers.)
The creation of Virginia Tech’s DREAMS Lab, the DreamVendor is an interactive 3D printing station powered by four Makerbot Thing-O-Matic 3D printers that is described as “a vending machine with an infinite inventory.” After students load their designs in the Makerbot .s3g toolpath file format onto the machine via an SD card, they select their desired model using the machine’s control panel and the selected design will then be printed and dispensed into the bin for retrieval.

Third-gen Solidoodle 3D printer pumps up the volume

Darren Quick

Over the past couple of years, the number of consumer 3D printers hitting the market has multiplied like … well, like plastic chess pieces churned out by a 3D printer. For its latest unit, Solidoodle has upped the build area to 8 x 8 x 8 inches (20 x 20 x 20 cm), which is two extra inches over the printable dimensions of the Solidoodle 2. This more than doubles the build volume from 216 in3 (3,540 cm3) for the Solidoodle 2 to 512 in3 (8,390 cm3) for the new Solidoodle 3.

MIT produces new metamaterial that acts as a lens for radio waves

David Szondy

We expect the world to be predictable. Water flows downhill, fire burns and lenses bend light in a particular way. That worldview took a jolt as Isaac Ehrenberg, an MIT graduate student in mechanical engineering, developed a three-dimensional, lightweight metamaterial lens that focuses radio waves with extreme precision. That may not seem too disturbing, but the lens is concave and works in exactly the opposite manner of how such a lens should.
Metamaterials have an air of magic about them. The elements they’re made out of should work one way, but they way they’ve been fabricated make them operate in another. They are ordinary substances that have been engineered with precisely designed and fabricated microscopic structures. These structures interact with light or sound in such a way that they produce effects that are not found in nature. In the case of the MIT metamaterial lens, they result in a concave lens that should spread radio waves, but focuses them instead.

Wax-infused "nanoyarn" used to create artificial muscles

Adam Williams

An international team of scientists based at the University of Texas, Dallas (UTD), has developed a new type of artificial muscle created from carbon “nanotubes” – tiny hollow cylinders constructed from the same graphite layers found in the core of a standard pencil. Despite measuring 10,000 times less than the diameter of a human hair, the new muscles can lift more than 100,000 times their own weight, which amounts to approximately 85 times the power of a natural muscle of equivalent size.
The new muscles are manufactured by taking a twisted yarn of the miniscule carbon cylinders, then introducing a volume-changing “guest,” in this case the paraffin wax used in candles.

Geo Data Logger: Arduino+GPS+SD+Accelerometer to log, time-stamp, and geo-tag sensor data

UPDATES
  • NOV 19: I have added a section with code to make this prototype act as a plain GPS logger without any sensors.
  • NOV 19: I can confirm that the program for this project works with Arduino IDE 1.02. The problems I had earlier were a result of loose wiring.

INTRODUCTION

I thought it would be educational to build a prototype that I can take on the road to log, geo-tag, and time-stamp sensors data to be analyzed later with mapping and data analyses applications.  So I figured why not start with a gadget that can log road conditions. This prototype, the Bump-O-Meter, measures road conditions by using an Arduino, a GPS receiver, an SD card, and an accelerometer sensor.

This prototype is a generic sensor logging/geo-tagging gadget which means the accelerometer can be replaced with any other sensor(s) to log anything anywhere.

As a matter or fact my next adventure with this logger is to replace the accelerometer with a pollution sensor to visualize levels of air quality around town.

Corn Flour Fireball

1veritasium

Corn flour blown through a funnel produces an excellent fireball. This both looks cool and demonstrates some interesting science. In any chemical reaction, the reactants must mix with each other significantly in order to increase the rate of reaction. Here we demonstrate that corn flour on a spoon burns slowly, but blown from a funnel, the reaction is dramatic and violent. This is because the surface area where the reaction can occur is greatly increased.

In this Instructable we will explain how infrared signals are used by a remote to control a toy or device, then show how a simple circuit can be added to an Arduino to operate the same device through free, Open Source software.

This document is part of a series covering the Puzzlebox Orbit, a brain-controlled helicopter that features an open design, open hardware, and open software. The helicopter can be operated via an EEG headset plus either a mobile device or the dedicated Puzzlebox Pyramid remote control unit. The Puzzlebox Pyramid includes a micro-controller based on the Arduino.

While we refer to the Puzzlebox Orbit in our examples, the principles, source code, and to a large extent software are all directly applicable to most any toy or devices which use infrared (IR) for remote control.

Detecting Lightning with an Arduino

Andrew Back

This post takes a look at interfacing the novel AS3935 lightning sensor with an Arduino.
The AS3935 works by detecting radio frequency emissions generated by lightning activity, and uses algorithms to distinguish these from man-made “disturbers” and to calculate the energy from strikes. From which it's able to then estimate the distance to the head of the storm over a 1–40km range.
The manufacturers, AMS, say that the AS3935 can be used “to protect both humans and equipment from harm by providing early warning of impending danger.” Suggesting that potential applications include use in hiking, at marine and sporting events, and with telecoms equipment, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and power conditioners etc.

Sneak Peak: Trotec Laser’s Job Control Preview on CNCKing.com!

A common question I get from customers who love what they see on CNCKing.com is “how long does this stuff take to cut?”
I HAVE been listening and soon, I’ll be showing proof using Trotec Laser’s Job Control X screenshots. I realize that not everybody has a Trotec laser but they are the only manufacturer in the world that has job control for their CNC laser cutters that’s accurate within 10% based on real-world results.
I plan on showing the cutting and engraving (when required) for models in the future for both plywood and acrylic as if they were cut on a 60 watt Trotec Speedy 400. I think this machine is the best in the market for the purposes of cutting the kits found on CNCKing.com – if you want to find out more, visit Trotec Laser Australia.

Instructables!

KILZ MAX™ is our revolutionary new water-based primer that performs like an oil-based product. It tackles the toughest stains and odors, with the ease of soap and water clean up.
Posto isto, demos as Boas-vindas ao Autor Brasileiro deste Instructable, manfredpw:

Sofa de Pallets
manfredpw

Cheap precision drill stand

andrea biffi

When I begun to etch my custom pcb I felt the need to improve circuit drill tecnique. I drilled my first circuits by free-hand with my Dremel, but despite it's very fast, it's subject to errors, and it's also dangerous, because the drill bit is very narrow and weak.
I've searched a column drill as the "Proxxon Bench Drill Press TBM 115" but it's a little too expensive. I've found also a vertical stand for Dremel alt 50€, but it was a model with a single metal column as rail, similar to the most you can see with a "drill stand" search, and it had a low precision in horizontal movement of the bit. In fact you felt the head moving of about a millimeter, which is a lot when your bit is so narrow. So I decided to build it by myself.

Pocket 256 Bit Logic Analyzer
Josehf Murchison

This is a pocket size 256 Bit eight input digital analyzer for checking digital circuit functions that I built for my own use at home. It cost less than twenty dollars to build and it enables me to test switching circuit functions at slow clock speeds as well as I can check 256 bit counter outputs. This analyzer works well and is cheap to build.

Stereo Audio with Arduino
amandaghassaei
Recently I've been posting a lot of projects that use an 8 bit resistor ladder digital to analog converter (DAC) and an Arduino to make sound. (see the Arduino vocal effects box, the Arduino drum sampler, and my audio output tutorial). The technique I've been using to make these DACs is very simple, it requires only a handful of 10k and 20k resistors wired together into a network. But the convenience comes with a price, as these DACs end up a little noisier than I would like at times. So I decided to buy a specialized IC that will be compatible with all the code I've already written for the resistor ladder DACs, but uses highly matched resistors to reduce noise. When I looked on Digikey for such a DAC, I found the TLC7528, a dual output 8 bit DAC IC. The dual output capability of the chip interested me a lot; while it is easy to set this chip up with one permanent output, it also gives you the option of toggling between two isolated output pins, making it fairly straightforward to set up a 2 channel audio output with a relatively small amount of additional effort/hardware setup/Arduino data pins.

Teaching robots new tricks without programming

Jason Falconer

Don't believe what the sci-fi movies tell you. When it comes to understanding our world, robots are stupid. Like computers, robots only do what we program them to do. And that's a big problem if we're ever going to realize the dream of practical robot helpers for the masses. Wouldn't it be great if anyone could teach a robot to perform a task, like they would a child? Well, that's precisely what Maya Cakmak has been working on at Willow Garage.
