WASP 3D printer creates hyper-local affordable house with the help of clay and seeds for stability

The English word house derives directly from the Old English Hus meaning "dwelling, shelter, home, house,”. It is one of man's three most important necessities. The other two being food and clothing. Shelter protects man from wind and rain, and from hot and cold weather. It shields him against insects and wild animals, and helps protect him from other dangers. We as mankind have been building houses ever since we moved out of a nomadic lifestyle of a cave man to a civilized being. Throughout history of our species we have been building houses with our hands, however 3d printing is going to change that forever.

ALLIGATOR FOR LESS!

With 18 days to go, it's time for our biggest announcement yet!
Thanks to the support of companies interested in the project we have opened negotiations with the major components suppliers, allowing us to bring the cost of the Alligator to 120 €!
As a result of These Negotiations, we can now offer the same electronics at a lower price, while continuing to produce in Italy and to provide assistance and support.

New Zealand Man 3D Prints the World’s Smallest Working Drill — Just 7.5mm Wide

Eddie Krassenstein

3D printing has shown that it is the perfect technology to use when wishing to create something unique, whether it is a piece of jewelry, a keepsake, or even a house or car. The technology, unlike that of more traditional means of manufacturing, is an affordable way of creating one-of-a-kind products, and is one of the reasons I love covering the industry. There is always something new to report on, and today is no different.

Entirely 3D printed slicer for fruits and vegetables

A breakfast with appropriate nutritional value will keep us fresh and active for the entire day. Healthy breakfast should consist of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey in your food system, but the real hard and frustrating thing is that we need to cut all those fruits and vegetables which is time consuming as well. To put an end over this Jerry a mechanical designer from Slovakia has came out with 3d printed slicer that has several advantages.

Hot glue gun becomes handheld 3D printer with some help from Lego

Paul Ridden

Given some biodegradable 3D printing filament and tasked with doing something creative with it, Vimal Patel built an extruder using Lego, attached it to a rather ordinary hot glue gun and ended up with a pretty funky 3D printing pen – a DIY 3Doodler if you will.
Before embarking on his Lego adventure, Patel did some preliminary work using the university's UP 3D printers to find out if he could incorporate zones of different stiffness into his single material objects. Though this proved possible, the layer by layer approach was found limiting and modeling and programming robotic assistance for extrusion along a path in multiple axes looked complicated, so he simplified the process.

Edge 3D Printer - an affordable open source 3D printer!

appleman123987

Hello everyone! In this instructable I will show you how to make a low cost 3d printer that I designed! It should cost around $150 US dollars or $175 Canadian dollars, if you buy from the links provided in this project (parts are from Aliexpress). You can also buy locally but it will cost more (about $300- $400 instead of $150).

You WILL need to have at least some knowledge in 3d printing top complete this project.

Basic beginners mini 3 axis CNC mill

Unclejake

I've been a CNC machinist just short of 20 years. Owned a Fadal 4020 with extended Z made some neat gadgets with it. About 5 years ago after illness I started back working and looked into and purchased some micro-controllers. All with the idea of building my own little machines. And explore what makes it all tick. Above are two pictures of where my build started and ended over a 24 day period. I'll be doing updates and more instructables around this project in the future. Please enjoy and criticize where needed my first Instructable and CNC competion.

Recycle Old PVC Into Flat Sheets
kludge77

When you think about PVC, you're probably like me, and consider it as a tube. Well, it's pretty easy to get it into flat material for the shop. I flattened a 4" piece of schedule 40 PVC in about 20 minutes. You just need a heat gun and a flat surface. Odds are, you've got loads of the stuff sitting around the house. Why not recycle it into something useful?

Will This New Technology Make 3D Printers 25 Times Faster?

Matt Stultz

The technologies that we often talk about for 3D printing (FDM, SLA, SLS), have been around for a while and it’s rare that we see ground breaking processes that really shake things up. This week, a new company in the market Carbon 3D, has released a new process they refer to as Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP), that may be a game changer.

Bacano.

3d print the Titanfall Atlas Mech action figure on your own
In the past whatever we common people need from toys, accessories to engineering parts, we were running to the local stores if else we will buy through online ever since 3d printing got familiar things have changed and made even a common man with knowledge of 3d modeling or even without design knowledge they can print anything they want. In recent months we have seen many designers brought their designing to the real object through 3d printing.
Daniel Lilygreen from wales who is a designer has extensive knowledge in 3d modeling decided to 3d print the game character of the Atlas mech character from Titanfall game. Lilyfield want everyone to print his model in whatever size they need to print this Atlas. He printed this action figure which is 18 inches tall, with detailed exposure of the model.

Pilot Uses Boeing 737 To Build Flight Simulator In His Own Garage
Lara Lopes
You may remember the 747 that was converted into a hostel in Stockholm. Well now one guy has found a more personal use for an old plane. James Price, an american pilot and air traffic controller, decided to take home flight simulators to a new level and spent years transforming the nose section of a retired Boeing 737 into a perfect flight simulator in his own garage. The simulator consists of a fully functional cockpit and state of the art simulation software.

3D Printed Working 5-Speed Transmission for a Toyota 22RE Engine

While we see plenty of very impressive 3D printed objects complete with plenty of moving designs, few building projects are more inspiring than Eric Harrell’s PLA working replica of the Toyota 4 Cylinder Engine 22RE. To refresh your memory, Eric’s recreation is a reverse-engineered engine that has been scaled down to 35% of the original size, as this was simply the largest possible option for his own RepRap Prusa 3D printer. Assembled with magnets, the 80 different components probably took up about a whole 1KG roll of PLA filament and took more than 34 hours to completely print. ‘It's definitely a challenge for you and your printer,’ Eric said.
But that was last January, and now Eric’s already back for more. Going for a larger and more complex model, he has now 3D printed the four-wheel-drive gear box for his previous model: the 5 speed transmission Toyota 22RE. It’s a fully working miniature replica of that matches his previous project, complete with a reverse gear. Like the engine, it’s not for the beginners. ‘This model is more complex than the engine,’ he writes, though it is in fact far more complex to assemble.

Electric Furnace
TunerFreak

The main reason I chose to convert to electric over any of the other alternatives that involved burning some sort of fuel is efficiency. Greater efficiency leads to lower operating costs and greater melting capability. Burning charcoal, wood, propane, or any other fuel sources require that many conditions be met before optimal efficiency can obtained. This is because burning is a chemical reaction and therefore requires that the optimal stoichiometric ratio be met in order to burn the fuel as efficiently as possible. This makes optimizing the furnace complicated and requires tools that most do not have access to. In addition, even when the optimum ratio is met, there are still bi products that are released that aren't heat. These bi products serve no purpose and therefore decrease efficiency. This brings us to another problem, expelling the exhaust gases. Because the bi products of combustion must be released in order to continue the process, we also wind up releasing heat in that process.

X-Carve?

X-Carve: Inventables targets makers, startups with unveiling of the X-Carve
John Carpenter
Chicago-based design supplier Inventables took another step into the digital manufacturing sector Tuesday with the launch of X-Carve, a customizable computer-controlled milling machine.
The new model allows small makers to choose from a variety of features, from the size of the machine to the power of the cutting tool. The company says it can carve precision parts and other designs from plastic, wood and metal.
Inventables CEO Zach Kaplan ⇒ said companies making thousands of units of a product will still look to outsourced manufacturing options. He said the X-Carve targets hobbyists as well as maker startups that don’t yet produce the volume of bigger companies.

Starting small, aiming big

RS Components and Practical Action came together in a hackathon aimed at providing support to third world countries.

Three teams were brought together, made up of highly regarded engineers and designers including Ortis Deley from the Gadget Show, Adrian Bowyer, founder of the open source RepRap project and Jude Pullen from Design Modelling. Their aim was to produce an eco-friendly project that would generate electricity in third world countries. The teams had two days to plan, construct and present their ideas on how to enhance the lives of those living in poverty.

The first team, Maxwell, developed a way of producing power from the excess heat from cooking. The ‘SeeBrick’ that the team developed is made of clay and uses low cost metals (copper & steel) for wires. Its main function is to utilise the Seebeck Effect to create a voltage. Relying on the temperature difference to generate power, this brick is ideal for placement near a fire. The SeeBrick can generate enough power to light 15 LED lights. This innovation could supply a family home with enough light for reading, studying or even to charge a phone.

Large Vacuum Former

fizzPOP-TheBirminghamHackspace

We had a requirement for a big vacuum former, as many of our members were interested in costume making and cosplay and needed to be able to make torso size "armour" etc. so we first took look to see what was available commercially and soon realized anything we could afford even second hand would be way too small for our needs. Having decided that our only option was to build our own we scavenged the internet for ideas and came up with a basic design that evolved into the machine we have made.

Everything You Need To Know About Papercrete

Expert Prepper

For all those who aren’t much familiar with it, Papercrete, in essence, is a type of fibrous cement (cement with a certain proportion of fiber in it). Because of its unique composition, papercrete is lightweight and strong, hence a perfect fit for a multitude of tasks. But more on that later – let’s first begin with,
The Ingredients in Papercrete

The ingredients that make papercrete can vary wildly based on what it’ll be used for. From cotton, wool and hemp to paper (wood fiber), flax and jute, different fibers can be used to make papercrete. For example, papercretes for building the walls of a house are usually composed of basic formula of cement and plastic. However, for any load bearing platforms or walls, a small amount of sand can boost compressive strength even further.

The addition of fiber to the cement results in a much stronger mixture – more or less the same way as the addition of fiber fibers boost the strength of fiberglass.

Researchers create world's first 3D-printed jet engines

Ben Coxworth

Working with colleagues from Deakin University and CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), researchers from Australia's Monash University have created the world's first 3D-printed jet engine. While they were at it, they created the world's second one, too. One of them is currently on display at the International Air Show in Avalon, Australia, while the other can be seen at the headquarters of French aerospace company Microturbo, in Toulouse.

Cellular Connectivity Comes to Microcontrollers With The Spark Electron

David Scheltema

Meet Electron from Spark, the new board that puts GSM cellular connectivity directly on the microcontroller.
With its onboard cellular antenna, this diminutive board will offer a huge range of deployment options and alleviate the hassle of using a custom cellular breakout board with your micro controller projects. They’re offering two versions, with either 2G or 3G connectivity.
It thankfully also reduces the frustration of dealing with mobile carriers — more on that in a moment.

Carbon tape to survive. 6 in 1

Shenzhen

What is your the minimum kit to survive? Maybe a big knife and reliable lighter? We found one more thing - carbon fiber tape.
Using one piece of carbon tape you can make:
1. Water filter
2. Gas-mask
3. Torch
4. Oil lamp or stove
5. Care of open wounds and burns
6. Fiery sign

How to Solder Without Electricity (or a Soldering Iron)
DIY Hacks and How Tos

Soldering is a valuable skill. There are a lot of situations where the ability to repair or modify electronics can really save the day. But most people don't carry a soldering iron around with them. And even if you did have a soldering iron, there is a good chance that you might not have access to electricity.
So today I am going to show you how to solder using random objects that you might find lying around (and a little bit of solder).

High Performance Grappling Hook
Mrballeng

We carry a lot of different things. Sometimes we drop them. Instead of leaving your everyday carry items out of reach, get your grappling hook!
This is the sequel to the original grappling hook I posted. The first one worked great but didn't stow so well. Here's what I'm working on now. It's a cross between a mechanical claw and grappling hook. When it touches down, gravity pushes the jaws open. Lifting it closes the jaws around your prize. Now I feel better about all the quarters I've lost in claw machines.
This is funding on Kickstarter right now of you'd like check it out. And for all you DIY folks, once the project closes I'll attach the file in step 4.
