A Caixa Pirata!

Raspberry Pi PirateBox
talk2bruce

A PirateBox is a Linux based system built using free software for the Raspberry Pi that provides private sharing of digital content. The PirateBox creates a local WiFi network, independent from the Internet, with anonymous file sharing and chatting capabilities.

I wanted to make a PirateBox and create a cool looking case for it. I used a laser cutter to cut the pieces of the case from 1/8" thick birch plywood and painted it to look as shown in photos 1 and 2. A small Python program controls custom hardware that makes the arcs above the skull glow when the PirateBox is up and running. Another small Python program controls a push button switch that illuminates when the Raspberry Pi is powered up. When the switch is pressed, the program shuts down the Raspberry Pi preventing the problems that can occur if you just unplug a running Raspberry Pi.

"Vision Systems Design" – For engineers who research, design, develop, manufacture, and integrate components and subsystems for machine-vision systems and image-processing and analysis.

"RadioResource International" – Delivers wireless voice and data solutions for mobile and remote mission-critical operations for professionals.

Categoria!

Jon Cantin on the American Innovator! (video)
Jon Cantin

I filmed this a few months back with Paul Akers, CEO and founder of FastCap.com so this has been a long time coming.
There were some internet problems throughout the interview so what he recorded at his end (using webcam) just didn’t come-out after lots of tweeking around but thankfully, I also recorded the interview with my own Canon XF100 @ 1080HD and microphone so nothing was lost. I was focused on the webcam just under my video camera which is why I’m always looking down. We were very lucky that my microphone picked-up Paul’s voice coming from my laptop!

-Abrir o ficheiro com um Programa de texto, como o Notepad, ou o Kwrite;
-Copiar todo o texto;
-Abrir o editor de HTML;

Introducing the Raspberry Pi B+

herbison

If you enjoy interfacing your Raspberry Pi with the real world by (for example) connecting sensors or controlling LEDs and motors, there will have been times when you have wanted to have more inputs and outputs on the GPIO header, or a couple more USB ports for connecting peripherals. Well, the good news is that the folks at the Raspberry Pi Foundation have obviously listened to the growing community of Raspberry Pi users and developed an enhanced version of the Raspberry Pi called the model B+

2D Trick 2: How to Draw an Arc Shaped Slot for Rotating Parts

Here's another handy 2D drawing trick you will likely need in the eMachineShop CAD software - drawing an arc shaped slot for a rotating part.

E esperar NUNCA precisar dele.

Small, portable and cheap radiation detector is being designed for the public

Ben Coxworth

Ever since the Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster, there has understandably been an upsurge in the sale of consumer radiation-detecting devices. Most of these gadgets are variations on the Geiger counter, in that they alert the user to the presence and level of radiation, but not the type of radiation – which is very important to know. Researchers at Oregon State University are hoping to address that situation, with the MiniSpec. Currently in development, the handheld device will additionally tell its users what type of radionuclide is creating the radiation, and whether it poses a risk.

Tool Pen by Mininch aims to be your go-to multi-tool

Adam Williams
Those in the market for a new multi-tool already have plenty of choice, but Mininch aims to stand out from the crowd with its Tool Pen: a screwdriver-like tool which draws inspiration from a 1980s kid's pencil and can carry six bits in its barrel. The company is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds and bring its product into production.

The Tool Pen is made from aluminum, and is available in silver, champagne, or gunmetal. It measures 15 cm (6.2 in) long and 1.75 cm (0.68 in) in diameter – so it's bigger than your average pen, but still pocketable.
With the six bits inside, the total weight of the tool comes to 93 grams (3.2 ounces). The side of the barrel includes windows, which allow the user to work out where the required bit is, and there's also a magnet-secured lid to stop you stabbing yourself.

Layered paper 3D printers: Full colour, durable objects at a fraction of the cost

Loz Blain

Irish company Mcor's unique paper-based 3D printers make some very compelling arguments. For starters, instead of expensive plastics, they build objects out of cut-and-glued sheets of standard 80 GSM office paper. That means printed objects come out at between 10-20 percent of the price of other 3D prints, and with none of the toxic fumes or solvent dips that some other processes require.
Secondly, because it's standard paper, you can print onto it in full color before it's cut and assembled, giving you a high quality, high resolution color "skin" all over your final object. Additionally, if the standard hard-glued object texture isn't good enough, you can dip the final print in solid glue, to make it extra durable and strong enough to be drilled and tapped, or in a flexible outer coating that enables moving parts - if you don't mind losing a little of your object's precision shape.

Laser Cut Foam Inserts for Tool Boxes
tcolson
This is my first Instructable. Any constructive criticism in the comments will be gratefully accepted.
Lately I'm doing more machining at TechShop SJ. As a result, I've been carrying a lot of cutting and measuring tools back and forth from home. Many of the tools have precisions surfaces or are somewhat fragile. Remarkably, some of these came with no protective container. So, I decided to make some.
All of the work in this Instructable was done at TechShop SJ, my home away from home.
This Instructable is all about finding the best, least expensive foam from which to laser cut inserts to hold the tools safely in their boxes. Maybe I'll cover the finding/making appropriate boxes some other time.

Small foldable tripod dolly

To make movies you usually need to move smoothly your camera on a flat surface, like a table or the floor. There are many commercial tripod dollies but you can easily make your own with a few wood boards and three wheels.

Acreditem-me, não há substituto a saber desenhar o que pretendem fazer;

Sketching & Drawing Lessons
ianbates1

Introduction:
I meet a lot of people in my job who say 'I wish I could draw like that' and they're surprised when I say 'Ok, I can teach you if you want'.
We often assume that drawing is a talent, something we are born with, some people can do it, some people can't.
But this is isn't exactly true; I failed my 'O'Level Art when I was 16. [don't get me wrong I'm not complaining I failed because I wasn't very good] and I didn't draw anything for a few years, why would I? I wasn't very good. To paraphrase a famous quote 'You don't know you are no good at something you enjoy doing, until someone tells you.' If I didn't know I was no good I'd have probably kept going and kept getting better. A couple of years later doodling away I realised I loved sketching and drawing and I wished I hadn't stopped and so I set out to teach myself how to become good at something I'd always wanted to be good at. I ended up becoming a design technology teacher/lecturer and teaching perhaps a hundred plus students these techniques.

HummingBoard is set to take a bite out of Raspberry Pi

Paul Ridden
Since shipping in 2012, Raspberry Pi boards have found themselves the brains of such diverse DIY projects as a mobile phone, a touchscreen computer or even a treat dispenser for the family dog. Now there are three new boys in town that promise faster processing, more system memory and more connectivity options. Yes indeed, SolidRun's new HummingBoard family has all the makings of a serious Pi killer.
...
The baby of the bunch is the basic i1 board, which features a SolidRun scalable micro System-on-Module (microSOM) that's home to a Freescale i.MX6 1 GHz single-core processor based on the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture, GC880 graphics with support for OpenGL and 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. There's no internal storage, but the computer comes with a microSD slot for loading in platforms like Ubuntu, Android, freeBSD or XBMC.

The i2 version is the i1's more powerful sibling, with a microSOM module sporting a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The i2eX model ups the ante again, coming with better graphics, 1 GB of faster RAM, and mini-PCIe and mSATA II connectivity. Gigabit Ethernet is also on offer, along with internal powered USB, an LVDS display out (with support for LCD and touchscreen panels), stereo analog out and microphone input to go with the SPDIF coax digital output, real-time clock support, and an IR receiver.

Interactive Physics Simulator for KDE 4
Tom Dryer
Step is a physics simulator for KDE 4. It’s meant to be an educational tool, but I’ve found it to be fun just to play around with also. Step was written as a Google Summer of Code project for KDE by Vladimir Kuznetsov.
If you’ve installed KDE 4.1 as I did in this post, then Step will be available in the repository. Step is a part of the KDE project, so if you’ve installed KDE from another source it shouldn’t be difficult to find.

NEW! Custom Cases from RS Components
Connector Geek

DesignSpark is proud to be able to offer a truly ground-breaking initiative to it's members - Custom Cases. Customers can specify a plastic case entirely to their own requirements and order as many or as few as they need. Let's have a closer look at this new product.
One of the big moments of any new project is turning the design that exists on paper (or on your computer screen) into reality. Some parts of the process are easy - prototyoing PCBs has never been easier, for example - but other parts can be really expensive. Let's take a look at enclosures. How can you best create a working prototype, with its case, without breaking the bank?

http://www.rs-online.com/designspark/electronics/eng/knowledge-item/new-custom-cases-from-rs-components

THE NEW CRUMBLE CONTROLLER

This truly game-changing device opens up countless possibilities for ‘embedded intelligence’ as required by the new national curriculum.
What makes it unique is the much lower cost than comparable devices and the ease of use.

Non-electronics experts can use it right away BUT also offers great potential for advanced users.

Milling 101: Understanding Milling Bits
jeremy

Choosing the right milling bit for the job at hand can be an extremely important factor in whether a milling project comes out amazingly, alright, or not at all. Combine that with having more choices of bits than materials, and choosing the right bit can be quite a difficult task. However, by answering a simple set of questions, you can greatly simplify your choice of bit. Here are the things you need to ask:

  • What material am I cutting?
  • What is my machine capable of?
  • What shape am I cutting?

Let’s quickly go through each of these and what they mean.

É mais rápido do que o Ubuntu;
Mais simples;
Instala TUDO à primeira;

About PCLinuxOS

What is PCLinuxOS?

PCLinuxOS is a free easy to use Linux-based Operating System for x86 desktops or laptops.
PCLinuxOS is distributed as a LiveCD, and can also be installed to your computer. The LiveCD mode lets you try PCLInuxOS without making any changes to your computer. If you like it, you can install the operating system to your hard drive. Locally installed versions of PCLinuxOS utilize the Advanced Packaging Tool (or APT), a package management system (originally from the Debian distribution), together with Synaptic, a GUI frontend to APT for easy software installation. PCLinuxOS has over 12,000 rpm software packages available from our software repository.

Audi set to cut vehicle weight with introduction of fiberglass springs

Scott Collie

The quest for ever-greater fuel efficiency is driving auto manufacturers to extreme lengths to reduce the weight of their vehicles. Aluminum, carbon fiber and fiberglass are all being used to help meet stringent emissions standards. In its search for "enlightenment," Audi has announced it will introduce glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) springs in its vehicles before the end of the year.
The core of the spring is made up of fiberglass strands, impregnated with epoxy resin and twisted together. Audi then uses a machine to wrap additional strands of fiberglass around the core and cures the unit in an oven. The strands are wrapped across each other at a 45-degree angle, to allow the load to be equally distributed across the whole spring.

Printeer is for today's kids, tomorrow's engineers & designers

Building a DIY Cellphone
Anrew Back

An open source mobile phone that you can build yourself.
The DIY Cellphone was developed by David A. Mellis, a researcher at MIT Media Lab and one of the creators of Arduino — which as it happens, is used in this project.
As far as I am aware this is not available as a complete kit of parts. However, it's an open source design, the Gerber files have been made available and PCBs can be ordered direct from OSH Park (note that there are two variants: the one described here with an LED matrix, and one with an LCD).

How to remagnetize an old horseshoe magnet

In the video below, we show how to re-magnetize a horseshoe magnet.  We’re using the HS1 Alnico magnets available in our Horseshoe Magnets section, and magnetizing them with some strong, DAA neodymium cylinder magnets.  We could also have used the larger HS2 for the same demonstration.

The electronic pole identifier can be found here: EPID.  The red and black plastic coated magnet is the handy D68PC-RB magnet.  Find other pole identifying products here.
