Layered paper 3D printers: Full colour, durable objects at a fraction of the cost

Loz Blain

Irish company Mcor's unique paper-based 3D printers make some very compelling arguments. For starters, instead of expensive plastics, they build objects out of cut-and-glued sheets of standard 80 GSM office paper. That means printed objects come out at between 10-20 percent of the price of other 3D prints, and with none of the toxic fumes or solvent dips that some other processes require.
Secondly, because it's standard paper, you can print onto it in full color before it's cut and assembled, giving you a high quality, high resolution color "skin" all over your final object. Additionally, if the standard hard-glued object texture isn't good enough, you can dip the final print in solid glue, to make it extra durable and strong enough to be drilled and tapped, or in a flexible outer coating that enables moving parts - if you don't mind losing a little of your object's precision shape.

Laser Cut Foam Inserts for Tool Boxes
tcolson
This is my first Instructable. Any constructive criticism in the comments will be gratefully accepted.
Lately I'm doing more machining at TechShop SJ. As a result, I've been carrying a lot of cutting and measuring tools back and forth from home. Many of the tools have precisions surfaces or are somewhat fragile. Remarkably, some of these came with no protective container. So, I decided to make some.
All of the work in this Instructable was done at TechShop SJ, my home away from home.
This Instructable is all about finding the best, least expensive foam from which to laser cut inserts to hold the tools safely in their boxes. Maybe I'll cover the finding/making appropriate boxes some other time.

Small foldable tripod dolly

To make movies you usually need to move smoothly your camera on a flat surface, like a table or the floor. There are many commercial tripod dollies but you can easily make your own with a few wood boards and three wheels.

Acreditem-me, não há substituto a saber desenhar o que pretendem fazer;

Sketching & Drawing Lessons
ianbates1

Introduction:
I meet a lot of people in my job who say 'I wish I could draw like that' and they're surprised when I say 'Ok, I can teach you if you want'.
We often assume that drawing is a talent, something we are born with, some people can do it, some people can't.
But this is isn't exactly true; I failed my 'O'Level Art when I was 16. [don't get me wrong I'm not complaining I failed because I wasn't very good] and I didn't draw anything for a few years, why would I? I wasn't very good. To paraphrase a famous quote 'You don't know you are no good at something you enjoy doing, until someone tells you.' If I didn't know I was no good I'd have probably kept going and kept getting better. A couple of years later doodling away I realised I loved sketching and drawing and I wished I hadn't stopped and so I set out to teach myself how to become good at something I'd always wanted to be good at. I ended up becoming a design technology teacher/lecturer and teaching perhaps a hundred plus students these techniques.

HummingBoard is set to take a bite out of Raspberry Pi

Paul Ridden
Since shipping in 2012, Raspberry Pi boards have found themselves the brains of such diverse DIY projects as a mobile phone, a touchscreen computer or even a treat dispenser for the family dog. Now there are three new boys in town that promise faster processing, more system memory and more connectivity options. Yes indeed, SolidRun's new HummingBoard family has all the makings of a serious Pi killer.
...
The baby of the bunch is the basic i1 board, which features a SolidRun scalable micro System-on-Module (microSOM) that's home to a Freescale i.MX6 1 GHz single-core processor based on the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture, GC880 graphics with support for OpenGL and 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. There's no internal storage, but the computer comes with a microSD slot for loading in platforms like Ubuntu, Android, freeBSD or XBMC.

The i2 version is the i1's more powerful sibling, with a microSOM module sporting a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The i2eX model ups the ante again, coming with better graphics, 1 GB of faster RAM, and mini-PCIe and mSATA II connectivity. Gigabit Ethernet is also on offer, along with internal powered USB, an LVDS display out (with support for LCD and touchscreen panels), stereo analog out and microphone input to go with the SPDIF coax digital output, real-time clock support, and an IR receiver.

Interactive Physics Simulator for KDE 4
Tom Dryer
Step is a physics simulator for KDE 4. It’s meant to be an educational tool, but I’ve found it to be fun just to play around with also. Step was written as a Google Summer of Code project for KDE by Vladimir Kuznetsov.
If you’ve installed KDE 4.1 as I did in this post, then Step will be available in the repository. Step is a part of the KDE project, so if you’ve installed KDE from another source it shouldn’t be difficult to find.

26:1 Sub-Micro Plastic Planetary Gearmotor 6Dx16L mm

This tiny, cylindrical gearmotor consists of a coreless brushed DC motor and a 26:1 plastic planetary gearbox. The entire assembly has a diameter of just 6 mm (0.24″) and an extremely light weight of 1.2 g (0.042 oz), making it a great actuator for miniature robots and very small mechanisms.

New product: AltIMU-10 v4 gyro, accelerometer, compass, and altimeter

Two weeks ago, we announced a big price reduction of our MEMS-based sensors and explained a little about why we release new versions of these boards so frequently. If you looked closely at the diagram showing the evolution of our ST MEMS sensor boards, you might have noticed that we’ve used each IC on a carrier board for that chip by itself, as well as on an IMU board combined with other sensors, with one exception: the LPS25H pressure sensor. When that post was written, we had recently released our LPS25H carrier, but we did not yet offer an IMU featuring this new barometer IC. The AltIMU-10 v3, which uses the older LPS331AP pressure sensor, was the newest AltIMU available from us at the time.

Curved laser bent wood

Aaron Porterfield

This instructable will cover my own experiments with laser kerf bent wood, also known as lattice hinges, and how I tried to create it parametrically to bend along a curved surface.
There's a lot of good information about lattice hinges here http://www.deferredprocrastination.co.uk/blog/cate... which explains the concept and actual physics behind it.
I'm no engineer, so all of what I've found is through trial and error.

Double Crank. Download, Make, Play

Double crank mechanism. Turn the handle on the side of the box and the two pads on the top of the box move back and forth in opposite directions.
Members can download the parts for free from the link on the website. The parts are available to non-members for £2.50UKP.
Once you have completed your double crank mechanism it is time to think about how you could add a character to the top of the box. What will you make? A cross country skier? Michael Jackson moonwalking? Two pirates swabbing the deck?

Rapide One - Affordable Professional Desktop 3D Printer by Rapide 3D

’It’s more than just a box!’

Rapide One is the first true desktop 3D Printer to offer professional rapid prototyping with stunning design and functionality at an affordable price.

What is Rapide One?

Rapide One is an affordable professional desktop 3D Printer. What makes Rapide One unique is it has been built from the ground up with the goal of creating a fully functional desktop 3D printer, which fits the gap in the market between high-end 3D printers and the hobbyist 3D printers currently available.

Rapide One is fully enclosed; we enclosed Rapide One to ensure a constant temperature throughout the build and to make the printer office, school and home safe. There are two large Plexiglas viewing panels, which allow easy viewing during the build. The constant temperature reduces the cracking and shrinking issues open 3D Printers have and it increases the build success rate substantially.

Rapide One has a full cartridge system built into the top of the printer to reduce over all size and to make usage simple and easy with zero mess, which is common with external, mounted spools. You can choose to use a cartridge or just load material into the top of the machine without a cartridge. The cartridge system allows users to change color and material type for each print easily and quickly.

Your first step in sustainable aquaculture

$849 For a Limited Time Only - Introductory price

Please allow me to share a little history and some information about me and the path that has led to the My AquaFarm™ Aquaponics System.
This system is the first consumer grade system offered by Hughey Aquafarm and is backed by 10 years of experience actually doing aquaponics.  It’s the first of it’s kind that I know of that can be shipped flat and easily assembled on site.   I built my first aquaponics system in 2003 using blue plastic barrels cut lengthwise as growbeds.  In an effort to reduce the technological complexity of current systems at the time and hope to make it possible to be done in developing countries I invented the Barrel-Ponics® Flood Valve system in 2004 using a manual flood and drain control system which spawned a whole generation of backyard aquaponics enthusiasts in America and the world.
